I miss the Yaris in all forms in the USA (it was discontinued here in 2018). I loved my regular 2015 Yaris SE hatchback 5-MT. Subcompacts are great, but nothing good is offered in the USA in that segment.
Tom speaks Australian and is driving through gum trees. Yay... Now I finally get this cars capabilities in Australia. Look forward to an update when released on the Australian market with different colours to view. Overall good review. 👍
The most important part of the car is the TRANSMISSION. If it's a CV transmission, it will not last very long. What is it??? How big is the engine??? A 1 litre GEO Metro had plenty of power. How big is this one?
Why do all reviewers sit at the back, comment about how much legroom and headroom they have, but FAIL to mention their height? It means nothing unless we know how tall you are.
One day the whole SUV styling language will be consigned to the dustbin of history, like tail fins and pop up headlights, seeing little hatchbacks dressed up like this makes me hope that that day comes soon.
I disagree. As the population ages, small SUV will only become more popular, because their extra height makes them easier to get in and out of. My mum is looking at them for this reason.
I hope that the build quality is better than the standard Yaris. With the standard Yaris the door close with a tinny "clang", the metal is very thin and the screen surround on the dash easily falls off. Here in the UK the standard Yaris starts at a really pricey 20k (UK pounds) If the Yaris Cross has the same poor build quality as the standard Yaris, I will be buying a Suzuki Vitara mild hybrid, which in the UK starts at £20k (UK pounds.) Thanks for a great review.
Suzuki are an odd one. Ive had a few, some build quality issues to note and the Vitara hasnt got the best steering feel. That besides it seems a tough car.
Guys, I thought I would get some genuine reviews. My wife and I have been looking for a small SUV. We test drove:- Mazda CX3, Mazda CX30, Mitsubishi ASX, Hyundia Kona, Kia Seltos, VW T-Cross, Skoda Kamiq, and a Toyota Yaris Hybrid, RRP approx $35k. I got as far as around the block from the dealership in Sydney. The car was gutless, noisy, vibration in the steering, steering just vague, interior with lots of empty cheap plastic empty places for switches, hard plastic everywhere, uncomfortable seats. SHOCKING. For $35. This is a car for $16,999. and even then, I would not buy it. Little wonder that Korean cars were able to penetrate the market.
What is the obsession with hard plastic? Most of people he surfaces are not touched anyway and if so, so what? I had no idea our fingertips were now so delicate. Had reviewers never raised hard plastics as an issue, it wouldn’t have become one.
Best comment on here. Ive said this for years. I like hard interior plastics because they dont wear out. A lot of soft touch in lower end price brackets is just thin foam crap that feels cheap and would wear into holes quickly
Most people who buy SUVs are self obsessed prats. They get one so they can try and show off to their work colleagues and neighbours by telling them “Look at me, im special, I drive an SUV”. In reality its a pumped up hatchback, not a fecking Range Rover. How embarrasing. People are so full of themselves these days. All sucked in by clever marketing trends. LOL
Why don't they sell this in North America? We've got quite the taste for crossovers here, even small ones like the Ford Ecosport and even Toyota's own C-HR sell quite well here
Nah its super cheap only AU$42900 drive away for the top spec AWD hybrid with two tone colour even the cheapest non hybrid in black is AU$30,500 drive away! lol I am joking it's stupid high price!
my Dad did a test drive and didn't like the road noise. the styling looks good on the interior, but then theres lack of space. no centre console only cup holders.
This car like many others these days is nothing more than a PCP deal fashion car to keep the industry ticking over. A car designed to be traded in after two years so the 20 year old woman still living at home can get another silly pretentious fashion car. We have a silly segment that never used to exist, with a myriad of makes and models calling themselves Crossovers or SUVs to appeal to fashion conscious buyers. People used to keep cars for many years, traditional hatchbacks, saloons and estates but the industry relies on people changing their cars often, so by producing trendy looking cars with designs that go out of fashion quickly, it generates a greater number of sales.
@@oddities-whatnot Hey genius read my comment correctly! I said the car we test drove had scratches on it's cheap hard plastics! And get over it that comment was said ages ago!
With the cross not as nice to drive as the hatch, less fuel efficient and an extra $5k, I'm glad I ordered the hatch. I find it interesting that you say this is better value, but other than being a slightly roomier car with more luggage space, I'm not seeing the value if you don't need that extra space...
Just watched the CarWow review the UK top spec Yaris Cross..They get a full digital dash, soft(er) touch dashboard, front armrest, front fog lights and much better looking automatic gear selector (same as the Rav 4). Shame Toyota Australia..lost my order.
A segment designed to generate more sales by aiming cars at fashion conscious buyers. Car makers have latched onto the current trend simply by bringing out jacked up hatchbacks with plastic cladding and calling them SUVs or Crossovers. SUVs that are mainly FWD and would get stuck on wet leaves and Crossovers ? What ? Crossing over into what exactly ? Its all clever marketing bullshit for millennials. They lap it up.
the hybrid 2wd drives soooo much better than the hybrid awd. awd 0-100 = 13sec 2wd 0-100 = 9.8 sec the awd felt like it is constantly struggling and the electric engine was never running alone always needing petrol assistance. The 3cyl also shudders off the line as it's not a balanced engine and has to rev to get any power out of it. The brown interior actually looks okay in the flesh, the worst part of the interior is the centre console just seems like an after thought. No middle arm rest due to their is airbags between the two front passengers. Best colour choice, white with black roof in urban trim. Looks like a mini Jaguar E-Pace from the front
I think you will be on your own with that puke interior and it is so easy to scratch our test demo car showed all the scratches especially around where the phone sits
If I wanted a suv I would be tempted to buy a car from the 1960s or 1970s and pay some one to restore it because a car from that era would have the same ground clearance if not more.
Hope Toyota brings this to US. I’d rather own this over the Corolla Cross which looks like a boring shrunken RAV4. Or bring the hybrid CHR to the states. There is way too many boring looking SUVs out there. This actually reminds me of the old Scion XB.
It's no smaller than some of the cars being sold now. That was the excuse Toyota gave for not bringing this over to the Americas because it's only sold in Europe and Japan.

How do these real drawbacks not overcome some nebulous appearance claim? Sadly car reviewers seem to be sucked in on the bigger wheel is better thing. Australian roads routinely destroy alloy wheels and low profile tyres.
Good point. Im in the UK and all the cars these days seem to have firm suspension, big alloys and low profile tyres. I drove an old Chevy Spark hatchback the other week. Ride quality was far superior to a lot of new hatchbacks because it had small wheels, plenty of rubber and softer suspension. Car makers are sacrificing ride quality to appease the fashion obsessed buying public.

The gauge cluster in this car is awesome. Drives well too.

Not! We test drove one and it already had very visible scratches around where a phone would sit, the plastics are awful!
Great design and the Hybrid is definitely the one to get, unless Toyota decides to put the 3 cylinder turbo engine from the GR Yaris into this car
In which factory it is produced.
Is the engine atmospheric or turbo?
What is the engine code and transmission code?
How many horsepower is the engine?
If you had to choose between Toyota Yaris Cross and Hyundai Kona Elite - which would win overall?
