That's marketing and the regular average car buyer for you. Market the car as something for people with active lifestyles who go on adventures to mountains and beaches and forests. The car will be bought by people with 1,8 kids and it'll be used for grocery shopping and dropping kids off at school. SUVs are the most stupid class of cars currently being made and ppl who buy them are gullible idiots and victims of marketing. Nobody needs an SUV. There's a better, cheaper and more efficient car for every need people might have. Hatchback, sedan, wagon, lifted off-roady wagon, off-roader, sports car. Those cover everyone's needs except vanity and desire to be just like everyone else: stupid.

That means their semi rural communities can now be truly insulated from the working class council estate scum that they will mock as chavs/racists and brexiteers.

I've had my 2023 Yaris Cross GXL AWD hybrid for 3 months. That's the mid range model here in Australia. I have been averaging 3.3 litres per 100km in that time driving in 50% peak hour traffic in Sydney and 50% on a motorway. That's better than 100mpg and so I pay for the petrol on rare occasions and get the electricity for free. I find it super comfy and the handling and drive feel/responsiveness is excellent. I find the build and materials to be excellent too. The safety features are great but I turn off the lane assist as I feel like it might interfere with minimising rolling resistance now and again and that's all important in a hybrid. The CVT gearbox is quiet and as described here, it is snappy when you put your foot down but if you drive for economy and learn how to make use of rolling resistance and 'pulsing' and 'floating' and 'rolling' to keep the regen up, it's a lot of fun and very relaxing. I find that I get the most economy out of this car by driving in normal mode, as this manages the rolling resistance - regen balance best. I adore this car and can't believe anyone would purchase any other car in this class. In the Aussie model we have to plug our phone in for Apple Carplay (and whatever the Android thing is) and that and the lack of a spare tyre are the only drawbacks. Forget the nonsense criticism about rear doors which 'don't open wide enough', very, very few who need to put a baby seat in a car will be looking at a car this size. They should go for the Corolla Cross hybrid. Oh yeah, I bought a new spare wheel for when I take it over the ranges into the outback, where, being an AWD it can handle almost any road Australia has to offer. It's smart and efficient in the city and does what I want it to do in the bush and looks good doing it.

Most of Yaris Cross reviews compares it to Ford Puma or VW Troc especially in terms of speed, pickup, sporty driving and so on, but Puma is only mild hybrid not full and Troc isn’t electrified at all… and that’s a matter also taking about price… I don’t think they can be put exactly at the same level

  • @KissTheGreat

The new London cabs basically do this too, but better! They can be plugged in, but they also have a petrol engine, but the petrol engine never directly drives the wheels. It’s just there to turn petrol into electricity that it stores in the batteries and uses to move itself around. So it too is very efficient.

I disagreed with your eye rolling until you mentioned the price... Decent little car, but what a price!!! I even wondered if the performance was dangerously slow for getting out of junctions, but you answered that saying it's pretty quick off the line with the electric motor. For what it is there's not a lot to dislike, but the price. I was going to say you'd have to save a lot of petrol to be worthwhile buying this, but then I realised I've just spend the most ever filling my car the other night... Yeah, your review was more informative and educational than I expected it would be. ;-)

Bought new and over my five year ownership I only had problems with ball joints on anti-roll bars that were replaced under warranty (they were making a noise on bumps). Frustrating that the hatchback that replaced it wasn't good enough to buy, which led me to a BMW which spent so much time at the dealership the service manager friended me on Facebook!

@@numbereightyseven Adding to that, the hybrid has far fewer moving parts (the difference is in the thousands). Service interval of 12 months is nice.
Another issue some people have is potential battery replacement cost. Toyota's warranty is very generous but, even if you had to replace it after 10 years, the savings in other areas would more than cover it. As a low mileage user, myself, I've seen recommendations that an HEV is not for me. Give it a run for an hour every month to charge the battery and it'll be fine; even then, the warranty is likely to cover most problems.

Like all hybrid and electric cars they are for wealthy people and not for the working class. When cars go fully electric/hybrid it will mean that ordinary working people will not be able to have a car. This will further push people into the cities causing more problems. Those with the money will be able to live in their semi rural communities pretending they are in the countryside while their favorite waitrose and starbucks is within a 5 minute drive. And they will not have to deal with poor people as they will not be able to travel to where they live.

@@bighands69 I roll my eyes when someone says "working class", it's a simple form of jealousy over those who earn more. Whoever you are, no matter the amount, if you're working to earn a wage you're working class. It covers practically everybody.
As for your point, I think you meant it's only for those on a higher wage. Lower earners will struggle to afford to buy. And in that respect, right now, you're right. What we need is a step change in battery technology. Once it can store ten times what it can now, reducing battery needs by 90%, that will make a huge different to the affordability of EVs.

I see you have 6 likes after 10 days, so this must be a concern for others which this parrot has reinforced, rather than cleared up. Most serious reviewers can't notice it -- they only comment on it because they've read the "CVT" from "e-CVT" and assume it is comparable and will turn people off.

Closest to true budget that won't fall to bits in a few months is Dacia. The market for this "buy one last petrol car on finance or loan to last 20+ years" is enormous. Dacias are great for the cash, but there's a massive leap in price to the next tier up. If you want to roll the dice on a PSA built hunk, good luck with that. Hard to say because it's not an EV vehicle - it's a hybrid. But can often go a mile or so if you don't put your foot down and more if it is down hill all the way. But then most cars don't use petrol when they coast downhill! O course this is more a "what percentage of the time does it use EV assist" question and given the petrol engine size nd this can average 70mpg I would suggest about 50% of the time and of course much more in slow traffic when it murders petrol cars.

And honestly for a lot of people's comfort it's easier to get in and out of, a little ride height and suspension control is appreciated in a lot of countries where road quality isn't perfect. At this point crossovers have been watered down so much from being big nearly-trucks to being slightly tall cars, it's not worth getting that upset about anymore.
