  • The 1980s were arguably the most influential decade for modern cinema, with a curious thing happening: the biggest stars of that decade are largely still the big names in movies. They've had a staying power no one could ever expect, and in this special video, we're going to take a look at three early roles for a couple of icons.
Blind Date: While he was nearly a household name on TV thanks to Moonlighting, the Blake Edwards comedy Blind Date is what proved Bruce Willis could carry a movie, paving his way for Die Hard.
Silverado: Nearly forty years after making his cowboy debut in Silverado, Kevin Costner is still making westerns, with TV's Yellowstone and his upcoming western epic, Horizon. He first made a big impact in this star-studded western that assembled one of the best casts of the 80s but only played to middling box office.
Next of Kin: With the Road House remake coming, the late Patrick Swayze is having a renaissance in terms of his screen work. While Next of Kin isn't up there with Point Break, Dirty Dancing or Road House, it's still a solid early role for a guy who never got the credit he was due when he was alive.

I just made my wife watch it like a week ago- my favorite of the “neo-Western” movies from the 80s and 90s. What a cast!

It was a little cheesy with formulaic showdowns between multiple pairs of enemies, but that's the way I like my westerns.

I watched Blind Date at least 100 times as a kid cuz my parents had it on a tape with Die Hard. I honestly think it's funnier now as an adult since I get all the jokes. If Willis himself wasn't hilarious enough, every side-actor steals the show and I don't know who's funnier, Hartman, Laroquette, or William Daniels (the judge). This flick also introduced me to Stanley Jordan and made me realize from a very early age that I loved smooth jazz too. I'm not really into romantic comedies but this movie always gets a mention whenever I discuss movies with other film fans. Criminally underrated and hilarious from start to finish.

I really loved Roadhouse. But his portrayal as Bodi in Point Break was one of my favorites. He was NEVER a baddy in any movies. And this was a great change. And he was vicious and lived for the adrenaline!

A true underated film with Bruce Willis that nobody ever talks about is Last Man Standing. It gets overshadowed by Bruce Willis bigger roles, and Christopher Walken is also great in it.

If you are able to get folks to embrace farce in their 80s movie, I'd recommend revisiting Sylvester Stallone's 'Oscar'. It's a 20's mobster era farce, and Marisa Tomei, Tim Curry, and especially Stallone himself are hilarious, not to mention half the cast of Animal House, and Kirkwood Smith from that 70's show.

Speaking of Underrated 80’s check out “Dead Bang” it’s basically a violent Miami Vice movie. It also stars Don Johnson. If you’re a fan of To live and die in La and Year of The Dragon with Mickey Rourke you’ll love it. It really is a hidden gem of an action movie.

I haven't yet watched the video, but I'm a HUGE movie trivia buff, ESPECIALLY the 80's, so I am super curious to see how many of these I actually don't know, as the video title implies.
I bet I'll know the vast majority, but let's watch it and found out.
Update: Well that was a waste of time. I thought it would be a list, not just spending 30 minutes talking about only 3 movies.
What a huge letdown. And yes, of course I knew Blind Date, Silverado, and Next of Kin. I thought you'd mention Russkies.

I enjoyed Blind Date when I saw it, but I can't really recall anything about it. Hudson Hawk had a LOT of problems, but being easily forgotten isn't one of them
Silverado is one of my all time favorite westerns, passed only by Open Range and Pale Rider.
I don't remember seeing any of the Swayze movies you mentioned - Red Dawn, Roadhouse, Ghost, Dirty Dancing -- that's all...

I agree with Lawrence Kasdan. Luckily for us, back in the '80s the movie industry wasn't yet sequel crazy and many film makers were given opportunities to make a variety of films instead of producing the creatively bankrupt remakes and sequels that have since stifled the attention spans of generations.
That said, I can understand why some would have hoped for a sequel to "Silverado" though I would have preferred spending more time with Kim Bassinger's character in a follow-up to "Blind Date". 😉

aka Rodney Hatfield, who is one of the best Harmonica players you will ever see. I used to see his band, The Metropolitan Blues All-Stars, in a little 75 seat venue called The Downhome Pickin' Parlor in Johnson City, TN during the 80's-90's. Awesome every time. Rodney on harmonica and Caroline Dahl on piano, have very few peers.

Blake Edwards' style of comedy is not for a broad audience seriously I watched Blind Date before this video and had just a slight chuckle, I was curious more because of it's pedigree cast and hot Kim Basinger looking best in her prime but then you waste the talents of Phil Hartman and John Larroquette for this crap I'm not surprised more people don't know of it.

  • @Thathorrorguy12FU
    @Thathorrorguy12FU 2 місяці тому

I really didn't like Next of Kin and it wasn't even Swayze at his best. And Silverado was a bit drawn and boring. It didn't have the edge that Eastwood's movies did. They were more like John Wayne movies which went out of style when John Wayne was gone. Dances With Wolves was a bit like it. However that story had a much better story and had much more edginess.
