And the story I heard behind it, that Harmon was told they were going over budget by shooting elaborate episodes, so they decided to make an episode composed almost entirely of photos… That’s really funny.
this is so well made, clearly a lot of time and love was put into it. so many retrospectives just do a synopsis of every episode one by one and aren't engaging at all, but the way you edit and jump around to each important story beat when it's most relevant is so good. usually when someone says to subscribe at the beginning of the video i scoff like "prove it first," but you definitely proved it

Excellent video! This series is one of the rare shows that I rewatch because it’s done with such quality content, great humor, and character development. That last episode always make me shed tears.. it reminds me that through life there are transitions and you won’t remain close to people you once greatly cared about or whom were a huge part of your life 😢
I really liked intro to felt surrogacy. Specifically the music. Both the first and the last songs always stick with me a while after each rewatch. The first one is very catchy and the last one is touching despite being funny. Both Pierce's and Troy's solos always hit pretty hard.
im a younger viewer who didn’t watch the show as it aired, and it’s really nice to hear about the advertising and the buzz around community as it was coming out!!
I really enjoyed your video, in fact, when Troy goes off on Zach Braff, I did not get the joke that Donald Glover was parroting what his detractors were saying about him leaving Community...Genius! Thank you
That was THE reason, by Dan harmons own admission. Kinda sus that got intentionally glazed over, bc it would be impossible to dive this deep into the shows lore without knowing that
The female staff member was Megan Ganz (writer in s2 to s4). She's actually a brilliant writer, and is currently working on its always sunny in philadelphia. She actually talks about her experience on community a little on the always sunny podcast (particularly this moment when Harmon screamed at her, berating her for the s2 documentary episode which Ganz wrote).
I'm not gonna excuse what he did cause it's pretty awful, but it's worth mentioning she has stated she forgives him and mentioned an 'all time great apology'. But yea, he did that. And it was awful.
@OzymandiasWasRight I'm glad you mentioned that! I do think it's important to acknowledge when apologises are done well, and are accepted by the wronged party. Because you're right. A good apology does undo the wrong that was done, but it can lessen the harm moving forward.
You were right on the nose about the importance of the chicken finger episode because that was the episode that came to mind when you first showed Dan Harmon's plot structure wheel. While it wasn't a "perfect episode" or even my favorite, but it perfectly represented the formula of the show and why it worked
I can give your video no higher compliment than it made me laugh so hard I had to stop it halfway through and start rewatching Community again. Well done!!
i understand why this video is so long, but every minute is important and packed with information. honestly thanks to this i can rewatch the show with a renewed appreciation
Don't know if it has been commented but for all the Potterheads out there; Magnitude is played by Luke Youngblood aka Lee Jordan, The Weasley Twins best friend
I love community. I will never not love it. It’s genius. However my only criticism is WHY THE HELL DID THEY PAIR JEFF WITH ANNIE?! It was already there that Annie liked Troy, and Jeff liked Britta, why change it to something so much creepier. I think the only reason they get away with it is because of their charisma. But it’s a very dangerous trope, especially for the young impressionable people watching back home. This show made me think an age gap that big was okay. I was 17 going on 18. I ended up getting into some really dangerous situations because I thought it was okay. I wish they dived in more to why it was a creepy relationship. Unfortunately I feel like the writers saw no problems with it
Sorry but I don't think the show needed to educate people on that. Still, the relationship between them is never portrayed as something okay, is always creepy/judged
They very clearly thought it was wrong. Yes, fans shipped them heavily, but the show itself kept pointing out how wrong it was. I’m sorry you went through some hard times relationship wise, but you shouldn’t be blaming the show for your bad judgment.
@@noorieboorie idk I feel like if the writers did a better job at making it weird then it wouldn’t have been shipped so much by the younger impressionable fans
Shocked you didn’t mention the gag is season 5 when they mention Zach Braff only being in the first 6 episodes of season 9 of scrubs and Troy says “that son of a bitch, after everything scrubs did for him”, then Troy left season 5 after the first 6 episodes
Today I learned Dino Stamatopolous, the creator of Moral Orel was a reoccurring character in community. It's amazing that he also worked in making the stop motion Christmas episode, I gotta go back and watch it.
banger video dude you can really tell all the work you put on it it was also dope to see all the comercials and all the content thats gets lost in the tv to streaming transition
I watch community almost every night and fall asleep to it like it’s my girl lol. This is like the third time I’ve put this on before bed. Thank you my friend.
This man has the key to my heart, first transformers, then star wars then marvel, and now community?! He knows everything i love, i swear if this guy make a Ben 10 retrospective he will fo sho be my fav channel
not heavy into any of that stuff but i might have to watch a couple of them just because i love his editing style so much. so many retrospectives on here just go through episode by episode in order, but this video feels so fluid and talks about the beats that are most important to the show at large, while also throwing in clips that make me laugh even out of context. truly goated with the sauce
I just wanna say thank you. for making this. One of my all time fav shows and its wonderful to sit here on a sunday and speed run through the entire series via your retospective. Thank you.
This is so incredibly well-done!!! Thank you for putting this all together. I can't imagine how long this took but I'm glad I subscribed a few months ago to find this in my sub feed. Community is truly a beloved, classic show for me at this point - and for many others. Its legacy is so interesting and weird (I thought I knew everything but you taught me a couple of things!) and I love that it's been getting its flowers in recent years. Hopefully the movie lives up to this legacy!
Jeff and Annie had such a great dynamic. As the show went on the characters just grew closer and closer to the point where it honestly feels inevitable if we ever get the movie they end up together
“Community” is not only a sitcom, it’s a commentary on the genre itself. Apart from the meta elements, it also has plenty of sci-elements like alternate timelines, creating “cloud babies”, etc., & ofc plenty of pop culture references & homages. It parodies a few tropes but most of it are homages.
Love the retrospective. Surprised you didn't mention that the Myles Morales Spiderman was created by them seeing Troy in Spiderman pajamas in the opening montage in season 2.
I didn't even realize that this video youtube suggested was only 2 weeks old so i was definitely surprised finding out that there was an official movie that was green lit. I've rewatched episodes here and there but I was out of the loop so this was a nice surprise for me
Community airing at 8:00 is what got me into it. The end credits always made my family laugh even without knowing what the show was. So one week we tuned in and fell in love. It's now one of my favorite shows of all time.
I absolutely love Matt Berry in S6 but Im eternally saddened it was before his role in WWDITS solely because I really wanna hear him respond to Brittas "I lived in New York City!" with a Lazlo line read lmao
I was ecstatic when I saw a community video essay I haven’t watched bc I really feel like i’ve seen everything after 4 years as a fan, this is my new favorite fs
The finale of season 5 fell short because the writing room was burnt out. There is a very interesting behind the scenes featurette on the dvd, where dan harmon is explaining they were working day and night on it to try and make it work, working until the early morning hours, then sleeping for a couple of hours, getting up again and taking shots of jack daniels to wake up. They had a crushing deadline under which the finale suffered. Awesome video dude, just found your channel and watch video after video

I was a high school senior in 2009 in this show got me so pumped for community college the next year
"Hah, gayyyyy" so iconic I started quoting it before I even knew what Community was lmao
Recently discovered this channel with the MCU series - and now you've done one of my fav TV shows - you da real MVP
I really enjoyed your video, in fact, when Troy goes off on Zach Braff, I did not get the joke that Donald Glover was parroting what his detractors were saying about him leaving Community...Genius! Thank you
choosing Garrett to sing Ave Maria at the wake is still my favourite thing in Community
Dean Pelton is one of the funniest secondary characters ever. That actor was also very funny as Fenton on That 70s Show.
Not many can make hours fly by like the Retrospective King Prime, thanks for covering one of my personal favourites! Much love bro ❤
RICHARD AYOADE DIRECTED THE MY DINNER WITH ANDRE EPISODE?!?! HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS?!
Didn’t Dan Harmon harass a female staff member on the show? I thought that was also one of the reasons they let him go for a season…
Just wanna say, thank you for all the retrospective videos ❤❤
I can give your video no higher compliment than it made me laugh so hard I had to stop it halfway through and start rewatching Community again. Well done!!
Finally a community retrospective. The goat never fails
i understand why this video is so long, but every minute is important and packed with information. honestly thanks to this i can rewatch the show with a renewed appreciation
Don't know if it has been commented but for all the Potterheads out there; Magnitude is played by Luke Youngblood aka Lee Jordan, The Weasley Twins best friend
Omg yes he is the one who does quidditch commentaries 😮😮😮
This was a beautifully put together retrospective. Thank you.
There were several misanalyzed portions of what I did see but wow. This is a lot of work. Have to give props to you for this video.
this is the best video ever created i cant express how happy i am to watch this i will watch this every single day forever
Unfortunately I feel like the writers saw no problems with it
Jeff and Britta had a chemistry that didn’t exist between Jeff and Annie.
I watched it when it was on the air. It’s such a great show. I’m sharing it with my 16 year old son now and looking forward to #andamovie
Shocked you didn’t mention the gag is season 5 when they mention Zach Braff only being in the first 6 episodes of season 9 of scrubs and Troy says “that son of a bitch, after everything scrubs did for him”, then Troy left season 5 after the first 6 episodes
Umm actually, exactly that clip was shown in this video, mentioning it as a jab at Scrubs and Donald Glover leaving Community in season 5. @ 2:40:00
@@CoiN82when people do a "you forgot this!" Comment that were either not paying attention or posted before the end drive me insane.
Today I learned Dino Stamatopolous, the creator of Moral Orel was a reoccurring character in community. It's amazing that he also worked in making the stop motion Christmas episode, I gotta go back and watch it.
banger video dude
you can really tell all the work you put on it
it was also dope to see all the comercials and all the content thats gets lost in the tv to streaming transition
@@alonedownthere47 dude i so agree, some of them take to long
I just wanna say thank you. for making this. One of my all time fav shows and its wonderful to sit here on a sunday and speed run through the entire series via your retospective. Thank you.
Had no idea about the small bits in the back ground of episodes. Makes me love the show even more
This is so incredibly well-done!!!
No wonder Dan Harmon went on to create “Rick & Morty”.
Love the retrospective. Surprised you didn't mention that the Myles Morales Spiderman was created by them seeing Troy in Spiderman pajamas in the opening montage in season 2.
Not the retrospective we wanted but definitely what we needed
Thanks for this retrospective. This is one of my favorite shows of all time. I watch it alt least once a year.
this is my FAVORRITEEEE video about community all the little callbacks and references I noticed that no one was talking about!!!
I didn't even realize that this video youtube suggested was only 2 weeks old so i was definitely surprised finding out that there was an official movie that was green lit. I've rewatched episodes here and there but I was out of the loop so this was a nice surprise for me
When Abed makes his first film and his dad cries, I cry everytime
Community airing at 8:00 is what got me into it. The end credits always made my family laugh even without knowing what the show was. So one week we tuned in and fell in love. It's now one of my favorite shows of all time.
I absolutely love Matt Berry in S6 but Im eternally saddened it was before his role in WWDITS solely because I really wanna hear him respond to Brittas "I lived in New York City!" with a Lazlo line read lmao
What a great video dude ,great work ,I’m so glad I found your channel
I just saw the second to last episode in my latest re-watch! Best sitcom ever.
