Are These Three Of The Most Influential Films Of The 80s?

- As far as 1980s classics go, it's hard to think of three more influential films than Escape from New York, The Terminator and Top Gun. John Carpenter's Escape From New York reinvented Kurt Russell, who was then best known as a child star for Disney, into the decade's greatest anti-hero. At the same time, James Cameron's The Terminator made Arnold Schwarzenegger into a massive action star, introducing perhaps the greatest cinematic one-liner of all time, "I'll Be Back." And then, Tony Scott's Top Gun, with its MTV aesthetic, helped reinvent the decade's cinematic language, which is still imitated nearly 40 (!) years later.
In this video, we dig into the making of all three movies and examine what makes them the classics they are.

Rambo, Terminator, Aliens, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Robocop, Back to the Future, Gremlins, Top Gun, Ghostbusters, Die Hard, The Karate Kid, Indiana Jones, Beverly Hills Cop, Blood Sport, etc.. the list of *original blockbuster movies* to be made in the 1980s is endless and that's why it was truly a *legendary decade* for the film industry. And all we've done ever since was to copy and/or *remake* everything made back then.

I'd argue Blade Runner was quite influential, as the movie created the tech noir aesthetic that persists to this day.
Absolutely, it shaped the future of sci-fi movies!
All of them above and the 1980s made the best entertainment of my life.

I was born in 89…but I love and only heard /seen 2 out of 5 in your list..that being said.”streets of fire and Howard the duck”…but I love both of those films to this day are both underrated flicks.I love the former cause I wouldn’t have beat ‘em up genre games like “final fight” and “streets or rage” without it..along with its use of music and then latter cause “Jeffrey jones” in that movie,scared the hell out of me as a kid.

All ten years of the 1980's was an evolution of filmmaking often imitated but hardly ever duplicated.
Die Hard was most influential
Most influential from the 80’s FOR the 90’s sure..as it made it so regular looking guys could be action stars. 80’s was still the buff action star era.
I think it’s pretty hard to pick any 3 as being most influential for any decade. Maybe Godfather, Alien and Rocky in the 70’s.

I’ve seen a video here on YT where the narrator humbly suggested that the late 60’s to the early 80’s was the golden age of cinema. The late 70’s to the early 90’s was the blockbuster era and finally the late 80’s to the late 90’s was the ”indie” film period. Each important in a different way. I’d like to agree , generally. After those , I mostly feel like we got sequels , prequels , sidequels , remakes , reboots , spin-offs and copycats. All in the name of ”money-before-quality”.

I agree. Without Lethal Weapon, we wouldn't even have Samurai Cop. Which would be a damn shame!

80s movies are demonstrably a driving force of modern movies. To their benefit or detriment is arguable. I don't know that Snake Plissken means anything to anyone, these days, though. Weird to have him as your avatar of this piece
For me, 1975's The Deadly Tower brought Kurt Russell away from his Disney child image. He played a Charles Whitman who shot numerous people from atop a Texas building.
I just watched Escape from NY and Escape from La and they have held up well over time. The funny thing is they predicted the future as it happening today with crime in NY skyrocketing, they were just off by a couple decades.
Suprise Rambo didn't make the list that was very influential
If you ignore 2/3 of Star Wars then yes. Maybe add weekend at Bernie's as we are reliving it with both candidates in this years American presidential election.

Terminator is the most Influential of all times.
Personally, I'd rather have put Robocop than Top Gun, which I think has created much more influence in the pop culture.
I absolutely disagree. Top Gun has been used as a recruiting tool since it's release. It is still famous for it's volley ball scene, it's tag line(s). It spawned a sequel decades after it's release that overshadowed the original. Robocop spawned one inferior sequel (and an incredibly inferior remake) and is remembered mostly as a satire of action movies. I very much loved Robocop, but it didn't transcend it's era.
@@guyjperson Nevertheless, it has had a huge influence on the cyberpunk style, both in comics and in video games, we can't count the number of cyber cops and cyber soldiers in video games from the 90s to the 2000s.
@@Alexcobra861 I feel like Cyberpunk grew out of Mad Max & Road Warrior rather than the half assed Punk esthetic of Mr. Foreman and his gang. Rather, it's esthetic was a reflection of it's time. I absolutely agree that Robocop deserves it's place in history, I just don't think it was quite as prescient and influential as you say.
@@guyjperson I think the punk aesthetic certainly comes from Mad Max but I also think it comes from older works, like Walter Hill's The Warriors movie.
but I was talking more about the aspect of robocop itself, which can be felt in a lot of science fiction video games, whether it's arcades, the SNES, or the Megadrive.
@bra861Mad Max and The Warriors are the same year. The Warriors (also an incredible movie) doesn't have even ONE punk style gang. The Turnbull ACs are skinheads(but interracial, inclusionary skinheads). The Rogues are like 1950s bikers. There is a gang called The Punks. But they wear overalls like they're Bananarama or Dexy's Midnight Runners or something. Still, The ACs are SORT OF punks, so I'll concede that 60 second moment might be a thing. Robocop was a takedown of corporate USA, not a cyberpunk thing.

Top Gun should be replaced with Tango and Cash, Lethal Weapon or Die Hard.

Never could stand Top Gun. Only thing I liked about it was Kenny Logins "Danger Zone". Other than that I thought it was crap & I won't waste my time on the sequel. Thought Iron Eagle was better.
The sequel isn't really similar. It's a much better movie.
1980s was a bleak decade for movies. Escape from New York? Really? Top Gun? OMG I'm gonna be sick.
