One Colour Pedalboard Challenge - That Pedal Show

- Can we choose four pedals of a single colour to produce some themed tones?
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! Yes, we know other channels have done this exact format, but hey, lots of people were asking us for it and after the buffers bore-athon last week we really needed some levity around here.
So here it is: we both choose a colour at random and have to assemble a pedalboard containing four pedals of that colour. We then need to come up with a stylistic / musical genre theme and see what happens next. Comfort Zone smashed once again. Some great tones today…
Enjoy the episode!

"Looping Doom" is a 2020 summary in 2 words if i ever heard it
with the mystical Brown Note thrown in for good measure.
It's there an effect that sounds like a new consistent cough...? Velcro fuzz into digital delay? The 2020 sound.
I swear, if Dan & Mick break up the double act, it's going to be worse than finding out the dudes from Mythbusters never really liked each other.
I echo that sentiment. Analog echo of course ;)
@@nfijef tape echo from me
I have thought this before. Thank you for expressing it in words!
Black, 4 boss metal zones. Done.
with a RAT for clean tones.
@@Fidtz Gotta love the spanky cleans of the RAT. Also, the G2 is technically black, so those Metal Zones can be in series, etc. Lots of tonal choice.
The MXR EVH pedal should also be added. That thing is fucking awesome.
Mike Justice nope, just boss metal zones
@@Paul-dw2cl Mike doesn't understand that anything not a Metal Zone adds to the impurity of your tone and makes you less metal.
Mick (wearing "FUZZ is all you need" t-shirt): "I'll get rid of all these fuzzes. I don't want fuzz."
Seconds later: "Maybe this one."
A few more seconds later: "Mythos Golden Fleece - good fuzzy fun."
...
A minute later: "OK, signal chain is fuzz-overdrive-fuzz"
Dan: Can design potentially the most complex footswitcher on the planet, making mere mortals cry at how overwhelming it is (reference: all the G3 vids from yesterday)
Also Dan: Can't work out the RC10 and shouts stop at it 12:20
Hahaha. I thought that too. Mick here. It is confounding that thing though.
@@ThatPedalShow I did find it quite enigmatic! Awesome job finding that yellow jazzmaster, potentially has made my day with that reveal!
Classic.
RC10 would be a fun challenge. How about next time :)
@@ThatPedalShow There was a RC-1 in the Background at 9:20 if my eyes don't fool me.
Would have been easier to control for sure
Look at those pedals
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah, they were all yellow
Oh, what a thing to do
Tips hat.
@Redemption Of The Dead oh but it was
@Redemption Of The Dead
Horses for courses mate. I loved A Rush Of Blood To The Head, but not much after that. Yellow is a great song from that album, and of course, The Scientist. I think I'll put it on. 😎
@Redemption Of The Dead Check that. Yellow is on the album Yellow, not A Rush of Blood To The Head. Sorry.
Pick a single manufacturer out of a hat. Obviously only brands that can make a complete board. Stick to a theme as you did here.
Josh is going to be so hurt when he realises this is not a premise to run through the 3 series. Nicely done.
I know I was waiting for that! Hahaa
Josh wins again!
😂
Lol so true.
😂
You guys! I appreciate the kind words and I'm glad I was lucky enough to have some matching color stuff laying around!
The lengths Mick will go to in order to not play that JEM. As soon as he drew yellow I was SURE he'd have to use it
An incredibly simple and even stupid premise is turned into an amazingly entertaining and informative demonstration of gear. Your talents and personalities just take it even further...
Gentlemen you are both winners!!! What a truly spectacular show!!!
Thank you Jay!
Today on That Pedal Show: Ketchup vs Mustard. Which tone is best for your hamburger?
If hamburger is to humbucker as hotdog is to single coil never put ketchup on your Stratocaster. Hope this was helpful, no seriously though you made me lmfao
I’m actually feeling this comment goes right to the heart of this
That poor Jem is gonna need a ton of personal therapy and counselling if it ever gets rescued and put in a caring environment (i:e my room next to my purple pete tele) It just needs some attention and to feel needed.
Remember a Jem is for life not just for christmas!
Seriously thinking of reporting you to The Steve Vai institute for the protection of Jems.
Hahaha! Awesome. Yes, poor thing. Where are you Melvoid?
@@ThatPedalShow Me I am from a little place just outside Portsmouth called Waterlooville.
Love the show don't change guys just keep being you.
@@ThatPedalShow I didn't like my white JEM at first, but I've fallen in love with it a few months ago. Who does the yellow one belong to?
Mick said "Sunn Oh" and it's killing me. This was the best challenge yet, and as a doom metal guitarist, I'd gig with Dans board ALL DAY
I used to call them Sunn Ojjj.
@@ThatPedalShow hahaha)))
Dan needs to put out a Post Metal/Doom Ep. I'm also a doom and sludge guy, and he fucking nailed this!
@@michaeldoerksen2841 As someone who likes high gain through a Pog2 and a Nightsky and Delay I approve this message.
How many demons were summoned when Dan put together his masterpiece? What a massive sound!!!!!!
Dan needs to put out a Post Metal/Doom album. His tone is D00M AF!
As the owner of an accidentally orange-themed pedal board, I’m very excited that you humored those of us who asked for this
System of a Dan
Yes!
Dan: "I'm going to need something big and open."
Me: "There's a HI-WATT right in front of you!"
Dan: "I think it's starting me in the face."
Me: "Yes it is!"
Dan: pats the HI-WATT
Me: punches the air, both hands.
I kept expecting "He has the box!" when they were looking through their choices.
Same dude 😥 or if they talk about a pedal they don't have 😂😂
Same
Jenius Hilarious Sentence...
Same!!! They should do that🤣
Good god.
The Looping Doom rig was putting out some truly brutal sounds and is more of a sound I'd go for. However, the Soundtrack Surfy was also a great sounding rig. The Fender amp is awesome.
Dan and the POG sounds like the intro to Spinal Tap's "Stonehenge."
"No one knew who they were. Or what they were doing..."
Mick's board is definitely more usable across genres, but Dan's board and use of the looper just does exactly what he wanted. Dan for the win today.
Mick carrying pedals giving me anxiety.. 😂
SAME
Mick nice try but I think Dan blew this challenge out the water.
Dan “the doom man” for the win
Absolutely. Incredible tones from Dan here. Also much respect to his musicianship - really enjoyed lots of his playing today.
Not gonna lie, I was expecting a diminutive Stonehenge to come down behind Dan as he was putting down some of his initial loop tones 😅
Mick, whilst wearing that T-shirt “i don’t want a fuzz ... oh maybe that one”. Too funny.
The strain on Dan’s face as he wrestle with his choices. Bless his cottons.
Bless his cottons! Haha!
Absolutely dying laughing in anticipation of Dan's reaction when Mick takes that "yellow" JM out of the gig bag. Fantastic, thanks.
This is definitely TPS version of ‘TOP GEAR’!! Lol. Simon is The Stig! Great show guys, very creative use of colors.
Ha!! I’m totally buying a Stig get up for Simon 🤓👍
The fender headstock table is a highly underrated part of this video. Awesome challenge!
I once built an all red EVH style board:
-EVH Phase 90
-EVH Flanger (35th anniversary red edition)
-Wampler Pinnacle
-Catalinbread Belle Epoch (red special edition)
-TC HOF Mini
It was fun and sounded great!
Billy Corgan approves!
=VH= 4 ever
JEM: You pulled yellow Mick, the choice is pretty clear
Amazon: Free 2-day shipping on bright yellow duct tape
Mick: the choice is clear indeed
Me: now that's some funny $#!+
Dan “Doom Looper” Steinhart may have just created a genre of music. The original is always the best. Love you Mick but hard to pass up what Dan just did as a win.
But of course! Mick here. :0)
indeed, Dan has definitely pulled some stellar sounds out of his red board.
But for me Mick makes the extra point for maybe subconsciously choosing the JHS charlie BROWN which is named that way to honour the BROWN sound of Eddie Van Halen who just left us a few days ago as we all know !!!
@@67er_matze97 To be fair, the toilet inducing comment @29:05 may be technically more "brown sound" than the charlie brown haha!
Oh yeah! Now I need to really learn. I’d buy that album.
TheCodeMonk the “throw me a freaking bone, all I’ve done is gone to the toilet” may be in my top 3 things Mick has ever said. I’m literally laughing right now just thinking about it.
So good to see you guys having fun making music/noise. Perhaps the limited rigs (and maybe the yellow tape), helped take things a little less seriously .
9:41 Mick: "I don't want a fuzz" while wearing an all you need is fuzz shirt
Everyone’s laughing or annoyed at this point. 😂 I love this show!!
"Flush button" reminds me of a conversation with someone at Earthquaker Devices long ago where he said he was building a pedal to replicate the sound of his mother's front loading clothes washer. "It chugs along and when you hit the button it goes into spin cycle."
I was surprised Dan didn't consider his SG Junior for his Doom project - that thing's girthy!
After Dan saying Red by King Crimson was the heaviest song in the world, I was really hoping we'd get a very conceptual board. The looper is red, there are loads of red Buzzarounds, PitchFactor, and any red delay and reverb. EOB strat has the sustainer, and white technically is all of the colours including red. Done!
Can't believe it but, that Gretsch is the best solidbody singlecut this side of a Telecaster. What a huge sounding thing. Through BOTH rigs.
I love that Gretsch but I was hoping for the Dan’s Nik Huber Kraut. It’s been a long time since it has been on the show.
i thought it is a semihollow chambered body
@@joeroy9524 At least 50% of Les Pauls are chambered/weight relieved (aka chamber just without sonic intent.) And chambering is a far cry different than a semihollow in construction.
@@GitShiddy naaah!! We could debate the definitions of “weight relief” vs “chambering” till the cows come home. What is true is that a fair number of Les Pauls made by Gibson USA over the last decade and a half have been weight relieved (they introduced weight relief in 2006 by most accounts) but in the total production of Les Pauls (remembering it’s been in continuous production now for well over half a century) nowhere near 50% of them have been weight relieved. The Jet models by Gretsch, conversely, have always been chambered (true chambering, not just a few holes here and there for weight relief) from the beginning even though Gretsch chooses to call them solid body guitars.
Next challenge idea: Choose a completely mis-matched and inappropriate guitar and amp combo and use pedals to make it somehow work.
I've used an ESP through a Vox before. Works perfectly.
Hi, Malcolm here. Top show this week. I really like these “voyage of discovery “ shows. They’re a laugh, something different and the learning curve is pretty steep without being dry. Learning through play, love it. Nobody does toilet jokes like musicians. Keep up the good work 😎🎵🎶👍
When Dan did his immense sounding loop, my headphones gave up and are now cowering in the corner...
Mick if I were you I would have been straight down Andertons for a TV yellow Les Paul special. Hope that tape comes off clean 😂
Red was the perfect choice for Dan ... he was on🔥fire🔥!
Dan crushed Mick on this one. The yellow tape was hilarious though.
Am colourblind but only a Red/Green, didn’t notice anything... great fun, thanks again 😀
I really enjoyed this one. Thanks, you guys. Also, if you haven't done it already, maybe you could do one where you use all the same brand, like all BOSS or all mxr or w\e, and maybe limit it to 4 or 5 pedals or something. My friend and I have been doing a 5 pedal challenge where we can only use 5 pedals to cover everything. Kinda fun. Anyway, thanks for making these videos.
I think this produced my favorite tones and playing from Dan, but that might just be my lifelong post-rock addiction talking. Only things I might have changed in his shoes would be cheating a little bit and using the JAM Delay Llama Supreme in place of the White Whale, and maybe taking a clean-only approach with the Dyna Comp instead of the Suhr (although the Suhr really impressed me).
These challenge shows are always so much fun. Great stuff guys. A solo artist doom metal track must appear on any upcoming TPS album.
Diamond Compressor; set comp to lowest setting, EQ to 2 o'clock, volume to 1-2 o'clock - been an always on tone shaper for me for over 10 years. That tilt-EQ is a secret weapon for sure, and really handy for balancing pickup EQ on-the-fly between guitars.
Dan's 31 minute mark loop wins it for me! Micks definitely got a more usable rig... but Dan's blood doom theme takes the cake for me
I love how much fun you guys are obviously having with this one. Great show, gentlemen.
Sorry to say, Mick, as soon as I saw the HI Gain/POG combo, I knew Dan had this one in the bag.
This episode was right on my wavelength.
'Dan's awesome loop'...just awesome! Dan should do some tracks like that and release them!
Yea you did my challenge' Dan & Mick that was so much fun ' you took it to another level. thank you both for all the great entertainment and knowledge of everything guitar
Solo Artist Looping Doom is the theme of 2020 i think
I’m with Dan’s board, all the way. That thing could’ve soundtracked 28 Days Later, or something equally gnarly. Epic!
Danny Chugs!!! Digging it. Thanks for everything guys, you’re the best!
Mick's set-up was great. Dan's set-up was epic. All hail Dan!
Jazzmaster and Deluxe Reverb are a match made in heaven. One of the few unquestionable truths in life. So good it hurts!
Did anyone else get excited when Dan picked the HiWatt at 5:25?
Love these! A big mug of coffee, rainy morning, and two of my favorite guitar nerds. Stay safe and howdy from Texas.
Tons of Fun!!!! Love it that you two guys can laugh and you epitomize that music should be fun, emotional, rewarding, experimental and a joy in its many sonic forms!!
Best Regards,
James
I get the feeling 5 minutes in, this could easily have been a 6 hour episode
Dan wins!! IMO -- Congrats Dan. Honorable mention Mick’s gaff tape guitar.
Doom and Sunno))) references on TPS! Love it! It'd be great to get some more heavy artists on!
I love the fact that you were able to get some of the best tones I've heard on this channel while doing this challenge. Sometimes I feel like limitations can really feed creativity in an amazing way. Cheers!
Coming to a streaming music service near you “DAN DEWM: Solo Doom Artist.”
Dan: Strymon Compadre, Boss DM-2W.
Mick: Strymon Riverside, TC Electronic Helix, Donner Yellow Fall.
Sorry for all the comments...awesome episode!
Great show. Dan really killed it though. Loved some of the tones (and the Gretsch)
Your educational videos are great and I’ve learned a ton over the years, but I gotta day I really enjoy these whimsical fun videos! Keep ‘em coming!
This is so fun -and so cool. I am thinking that Josh had all of his employees join him in requesting this episode over and over! It is great and you did cool stuff. The Yellow Gaffmaster was nice - but I so thought you'd find a way to go for the Jem!
"Gaffmaster" made my day :-)
" OCD Nightmare !!! "
Good name for a pedal ...
Dan's POG
Dinosaur fossils renimate and emerge through the studio floor ...
I hope you guys do this challenge again. It was a lot of fun to watch this! And the tones were great, of course!
I have been waiting years for you guys to use a Suhr Eclipse, and now you not only do that, but you plug it into the Hiwatt. Bless you.
I fear Dan may have accidentally summoned a slow melancholy demon
I feel like 'everything at 2 o'clock' should be a t-shirt (although I need to look at the existing merch)
Awesome show, like always guys! Thanks for the show, it gives me something to look forward to, and it never disappoints!
The CONSTRAINTS of poetry (meter, rhyme scheme, etc) force people to explore further to come up with amazing results. Here, the arbitrary constraint of color forced Dan and Mick to come up with amazing results. One of the best videos ever. MORE arbitrary constraints please!
I was literally thinking about this a couple days ago while looking at all my orange pedals. I felt ridiculous. Now I feel vindicated. Thank you.
Getting some serious stonehenge vibes from the POG2 at 27:18 ... "In ancient times ... hundreds of years before the dawn of history ... lived an ancient race of people ... the druids..."
I love how these challenges force some thinking outside of the box and some different creative options. Brilliant!
I can't remember seeing Dan have so much fun playing. He's scary good at this style too!
The challenge I want to see next: guitar+amp+4 pedals with the most knobs and switches possible vs the rig with the least knobs and switches possible.
Dan, you should have named your sound Dark Pink Floyd...really missed an opportunity there.
Seriously though, I've watched every episode and this was one of your best, even though I'm colorblind.
Thanks for a fun show as always. But can I say thanks Dan for playing Black Hole Sun as I’ve never been able to figure it out! It’s so simple and complex at the same time. True majesty
That. Was. AWESOME!!! Ok, I know I’ve already mentioned the need for a “it’s 2 o’clock somewhere” shirt, but the Charlie Brown just confirmed what we already knew. Love you guys and extra congrats to Dan on the win & G3.
Also, I happen to have both the trucker hat AND the shirt Mick’s wearing (mine’s grey)...I can tell you they’re excellent quality.
All Love,
Aaron
I like the yellow rig!!! That would make a great Cowpunk / Hellbilly rig.
Prediction for mick: Ts808,Ts9, Ts10, JHS bonsai. There is some yellow in that green.
Dan...you killed it. I always love it when you step out like you did here. You are a very talented girl musician. I love your aesthetic. You chose bravely and made lovely sounds. It was so fun watching you make Mick visibly sick. Tell him to potty first next time you bust out those low octaves. Cheers to both! Keep pushing yourselves, I’ll do the same.
Everything @ 2 o'clock. I just love that.
The winner of this challenge: Bigfoot FX. That Magnavibe is, well, vibey.
Well, to be fair, Dan's tones were incredible.
great episode my friends!! 👍 Dan has definitely pulled some stellar sounds out of his red board.
But for me Mick makes the extra point for maybe subconsciously choosing the JHS charlie BROWN which is named that way to honour the BROWN sound of Eddie Van Halen who just left us a few days ago as we all know !!!
Oh my gatos this episode is just amazing. Y'all are so great. Doom on & tape twang surfy mania!!!
As for what the Sound Guy would do with all of Dan’s low frequencies, there’s clearly a reason why bands like Sunn0))) just play straight through a wall of amps...
Cutting out the sound man, every band’s dream
Well technically, 🤔 Mick would be disqualified for not keeping to the 4 pedal rule... the trem/reverb footswitch for his amp is sort of a pedal...
I really enjoy these challenge videos. They are so fun
Sorry Mick but not only did Dan put together the better board but he went WAY out of his comfort zone with the ambient/doom vibe and absolutely CRUSHED it. You can't deny him the win on this on.
Totally!
