Welcome to the show! We are delighted to welcome our lovely friend Mikey Demus to Schwangri-La. Guitarist and songwriter in rock-metal-reggae-electronica titans, Skindred, Mikey’s full-on riffing and experimental sound sculpting form a huge part of the band’s energetic assault on ears and eyes.
At the time of filming this, Mikey was mid-tour so his main guitar rig and board were in the back of a lorry somewhere. What better excuse to bring in Ye Olde Bag O’ Pedals from which Dan can concoct a board to spur a general chat on tone, playing and everything that goes with it?

Great show. Really good to see Manson Guitars getting some visibility. They deserve more attention. I am also not a heavy player, but I enjoyed the insights from Mikey Demus. As well as his pedals.
I have fond memories of hitting the NOS button and tearing through the streets to Skindred's shark pit in need for speed underground 2. Never listened to them outside of that

Fantastic sounds, I imagine those Redbeard FX are great of synths too.
Well, he’s using a whammy and an old EHX micro synth, so yeah.
For my money, and tonal tastes, I think having pedals that do high gain, but can also be dialed in to use the same as lower gain ones, is often claimed, but many just don’t work well throughout the gain range, and/or have little headroom, for a cleaner drive or distortion.
Example: I like Rat circuits that cleanup well, with the guitar’s volume knob, and also go high gain, with real meat on the cleaner tones.
Like the Ibanez Session Man SS10.

Mikey sold me a Hairy Squid at last year’s Birmingham Guitar Show. Still on the board a year (almost) later, in pedal-years that’s pretty impressive for me.
Loved those EHX pedals with sliders. Used a Graphic Fuzz and memory man as the core of a board in a touring band years ago, and found it to be a super versatile gain pedal. I didn’t play particularly distorted then or now, and felt the “fuzz” title may have held people off from discovering that pedal.

Another lefty!! Hooray! I got to play one of Mikey's old guitars when it was up for sale in a Worcester guitar shop. Some fancy Telecaster. Think it was an Elite.

Not a Skindred fan (or hater - just passed me by tbh) but as a left-handed guitar player this really resonated with me. Choices are understandably horrendous. We make up such a small proportion of guitar players it's not financially sound to invest in providing the same range of guitars for us. It does mean that some of the vintage guitar discussions on the show really pass me by because I can't even imagine what it is like to really have the ability to be too choosey when it comes to specs, colours etc. Always nice to be see more 'sinister' players! :D

Really interesting chat and good to see the new guitar. Signature guitars are interesting. Red Specials are very versatile guitars with three pickups and all those switching options. If you play one, everyone seems to want you to play Queen licks, despite the sonic possibilities. Play a Lester and no one expects you to play 50's experimental Les Paul tunes and harmonise with Mary Ford!!! Great show, as always.
Yes! Finally, someone else who has the same left/right thing as me (although, I play right handed 😉) I am left handed, write left handed, but other things I do right handed; raquet sports, bowling, kicking a ball, but others are left handed (pool, darts!) But check this, if I've had a few ales and feel the urge to air guitar, my air guitar is left handed 😂 I didnt start playing until I was 18, and often wonder if I'd picked up a left-handed guitar back then, if I'd be a leftie? Mikey comes across as a very lovely guy, will have to check out some Skindred. I am friend of a friend of Mikey's tech Dan, who also does guitars for the amazing new Reef guitarist Amy. Great episode.
Never even heard of Skindred until I saw Rabea's video on the RedBeard Effects Honey Badger octave fuzz pedal. To my ears their music sounds like late 90's, early 2000's new-metal mixed with reggea. Basically Limp Buiscuit mixed with reggea instead of hip-hop. Not really my cup of tea but that Honey Badger pedal sounds great, I can definitely use that on my board 👍

Great interview guys! I love my Digitech Drop but keep wanting to exchange it for the whammy version.
Just for reference, it sounds to me like what Mikey is describing re:handedness is that he is left eye dominant but right handed. I am the opposite right eye dominant but left haded, essentially I write left hand and favor it eating and such, but more realistically am right handed which is how I play all sports. I play guitar right handed and probably could have gone either way, but that's what was laying around the house.
Just having fun and being ultra creative. Lots to learn from!
I'm left handed but play right handed, it feels right! if you think about it why would you use the most controllable and dextrous hand on the plectrum?
FWIW, I'm left handed and have always played guitar right handed. You use both hands, and I literally never considered the trade-offs worth it. It's really nice being able to pick up almost any guitar and play.
I got stung on Denmark street. Popped into a well known shop for a set of strings and walked out with an overpriced Collings CJ acoustic. That said, it’s the best guitar I’ve ever played and I’ve never found an electric which comes close. It certainly cured my GAS for acoustics at the time. By the way, this guy is a real character, knowledgeable and very likeable. Great episode.
I decided to learn left handed because of the way I learn. It is so much easier for me to mirror someone. I’m glad I did because rhythm is with my dominant hand is mandatory.
First saw Skindred I think it was the Ozzfest in the UK in 2002. Have loved them ever since 😊
The left-right-handedness thing is always fascinating to me. I’m a natural lefty and my dad made me learn guitar right-handed so I could walk into a shop and play any guitar in the place… so long as it’s not left-handed. 😂.
I definitely feel like my playing benefits from this. And there’s a long list of people who are natural lefties who play righties. Duane Allman… Fripp, Knopfler, Johnny Winter, Billy Corgan…. Good company.
When I was a kid playing air guitar, it was always backwards though. Lefty to the max. I say, do whatever works for you!

I have the same thing as Mikey! I am naturally a lefty, played tennis competitively for 10 years with my left hand, writing with a left hand... Yet, when I picked up a guitar, instantly it felt correct to hold it as a righty... It does not matter ultimately, if it feels comfortable, then it is probably right haha

The left-brain/right-brain is a debunked theory, so there's no real impact from left or right handedness on creativity. However, that said, visualisation of accessing one side of the brain may help you in the creative process. But so might imagining a conversation with Mozart or staring at a Climt painting.
I can't remember the details, but there was a recent study on the impact of using left or right hands while listening to music. That does change your experience of what you hear.
I'm left-handed but learned guitar right-handed for exactly the same reason. That's what my Dad had, that's the first way I learned. And even when I "found out" it seemed to make more sense for a left to play a "right handed guitar". But I'm right-footed.
On handedness, I'm kind of messed up too. Righty with a guitar and a pen, lefty with a pool cue and a rifle, BUT righty with a handgun/pistol. Go figure! 😂
As a natural lefty who plays guitar lefty, but does things like throw a ball right handed- we are just weird creatures. I also whammy/wah on the right foot, not sure if that's because every pedal-board is backwards and the wah is usually first in the chain (which with in-out it's on the right) or it's more comfortable to balance on my left foot...who knows. I did look into building a lefty pedal-board, primarily so I'm not standing, and tripping, on the lead the whole time (because it has to cross in front of you). Would love a board where the leads come out of the "right" side! I hope Manson guitars keeps lefties in their line up and doesn't just make one for the artist then all the rest righty (like Easton, Iommi, Hendrix, Cobain).

Im right handed, always writte with right hand, never tried to grab pen into the other hand.
But going to play football, first thought was to kick with left leg, never ever had thought to kick with right leg.
There are many interesting leftie persons, that plays right handed. Steve Morse, Kiko Loureiro, Mark Knopfler and many many others. Interesting topic.

Eric Gales comes to mind when talking about unusual Guitar styles , Left Handed and upside down and his playing is astronomically Superb .
I think Gales may be one of the left handed players, who are actually right handed, when writing or doing other things.
A bit like a goofy foot, surfer/skateboarder.
If I remember correctly, Robert Fripp is a leftie but he plays right-handed and he's been quoted saying something about the correct way being that the fretting hand should be the dominant hand. Whatever works!

i connect with makey on the left handedness im a true lefty that got forced to write right handed in school and i tried for like 2 years to learn guitar and i just couldnt do it i played a left handed bass one day and everything clicked it felt natural so i just went the lefty route
I recently had to learn how to re-walk and re-stand again and my preference for wha was always right foot but now I have to do left it’s effing me up didn’t know anyone else was having that too
Really found the left-handed conversation interesting, I'm left-handed but play right-handed and couldn't even attempt to play the other way around. I use wahs etc. with my right foot too, despite being left-footed.
I think there's a fair few left-handed players who play right-handed, Joe Perry of Aerosmith is one that comes to mind! Guess this video proves there's no reason it can't be flipped both ways
anyone super curious about th whammy knob-turny sound should listen to Voice of the Voiceless by Rage Against the Machine and/or the guitar solo from Shadow on the Sun by Audioslave. I practically fell out my chair when i learned all Tom was doing was playing one note and turning the interval knob back and forth.
I am a lefty and do everything as a lefty EXCEPT playing guitar. And I believe that’s because I first picked up a right handed acoustic that was at my house growing up.

I'm a LH player. A gift and a curse! But in a nutshell, the L Hemisphere of the brain in the creative and the R is is the analytical, problem solving workhorse so I think that's why more LH players are quite unique. Not many Lefties I've heard "suck" for e.g. that I can recall at least.

Actually to add to that… Mick here… I think a lot of that hemisphere-dominance stuff has been shown to be bogus. For sure different bits of the brain have been seen to cause different effects when injured, but the old left/right brain creative/analytical thing is too simplistic. Not least in the complex relationships between functions/cortex etc etc. Like personality types, I think the left/right brain thing is more a convenient shortcut to motivated understanding / definition of behaviour where a more complex question and explanation is too much like hard work. Tying in this and the last show, with inspiring tones from the two Line6s and short comings of the pedals in the 'The things that didn't work out?', makes me wonder if a reappraisal of the Line6 M-series pedals would make an interesting short format show. Still a staple on many pro boards 13 years on, despite advancements in DSP power and a bigger multifx market. Or a longer show with Uncle Larry.

Guesstimating a bit, Mikey's strings in his tuning have about as much tension as a normal set of 9s in standard tuning (supposing Rotosound does not have an unusual spread of unit weights in their larger gauges).

It's amazing to me for how lauded & praised the mkI Whammy is that, as far as I'm aware, there's no boutique-y pedal builders doing a faithful reproduction. Yeah there's octave stuff out there but besides expensive multieffects processors or EHX standalones, neither of which do the mkI Whammy thing...just the whammy thing. It implies that not only is it really really difficult but it'd be so expensive that the price would exceed the demand. But hey, you've got a guy who owns a pedal company on the show talking about the need for a roadworthy version...so maaaybe Red Beard whammy?
I read post from one of the Digitech guys where he basically said that the tech to do the whammy or accurate real time pitch shifting in general is beyond most companies ability. Even Strymon won’t touch it.
@@Sperzel The Whammy is almost 40 years old. And the charm of the mkI is that it's a bit crap. It has been done, just redo it.
Seems odd that 90% of boutique pedals inspiration is "old & kinda crap, but iconic" and there's no real boutique Whammy reproduction, is all. Figure someone would take up the challenge.
@@GitShiddyI just think the ROI for producing a Whammy I replica is far too low, especially since most will happily pick up a brand new Whammy 5 for a very reasonable price. Even sourcing the case/expression pedal would be a huge investment for a small builder.
@@Sperzel I don't disagree with any of that. But you'd think there'd be one Whammy nerd out there who's obsessed enough to ruin their life over it.
You guys should absolutely do a telethon style fundraiser for the riffless out there. There are ppl suffering all over the world that don't have access to basic needed riffs..
