      Thanks , these videos are very helpful. I’d like to set up a demo Trading 212 account. I’m in the US and my App Store is not finding the app. Is it possible to set up any of the trading accounts available in Ireland from the US?

      @@deirdrej8395 Hi D, thanks for watching and appreciate the feedback! So as far as we're aware, Trading 212 isn't available to US customers at the time of writing.
      Are you an Irish citizen living in the US? For what it's worth, I started investing for the first time when I lived in the US (with Robinhood) but had an awful time trying to move my positions to a broker available in Ireland once I left the country. I eventually managed to do it with Interactive Brokers - so I'd definitely recommend opening an account with them as they're also US based, so that should make things easier.

    Thanks for the info,
    I’ll be checking out a lot more of your videos 👍
    I’m thinking about moving home (we’ll see now lol), looking for a trading app that I can use to continue my US investments. It must have access to the S&P500 ETFs,
    I may be misunderstanding this, the tax is applied on the dividends that are automatically reinvested or on DRIP as an income?
    Your technically being taxed twice on the same income,
    1st when it’s reinvested at 41%
    2nd when you withdraw it at 41%!!
    That 82% of your dividends in taxes.
    That seems a bit Irish!!
    Dividends are taxed at 15% CGT here in Canada and only when withdrawing them as an income.
    You are charged a withholding tax of 15% on US ETF dividends if you withdraw them as income but not if they are reinvested or in a retirement account.
    41% is outrageously high!
    Even @ 33% CGT it’s an indicator that they really don’t want you becoming financially independent! Kinda reminds me of why we left in the first place 😂
    With those tax rates it would be cheaper for me to rent a small studio apartment here and do my investment through my bank here from home, isn’t that sad.

    Idea for next video: Please explain difference between buying same item on different stock exchanges. For example, free ETFs from Degiro has stock exchange name specified. Does it mean if you buy same ETF from another place, it won’t be commission free? Or look at trade war between China and USA. Should you buy Chinese companies directly at Honk Hong (€10 per transaction) to avoid situation when company is delisted on USA/EU stock exchanges for political reasons. Why Degiro takes different commissions on EU stock exchanges?

    • @TheLearningsReport
      @TheLearningsReport  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Aleksei, thanks for those suggestions - they're great!
      For Degiro, correct, if you purchase an ETF thats not listed on their 'commission free ETF list' (link below) then you'll pay whatever the regular trading fee is for trading that position. Do note that the fee is likely going to be minimal though!
      www.degiro.ie/data/pdf/ie/commission-free-etfs-list.pdf
      For your second question, I wouldn't be overly concerned personally about this (I hold Chinese stocks also) and the reasons are really well explained in this article that I've linked below. I'll be holding mine on US exchanges for now!

    Could you do a video on investing in actual real estate in Ireland and the taxation of rental income? My thinking is that the only way around excessive Irish tax is to have your PPR and a secondary property (further out from Dublin that you could ultimately retire to). When you sell your PPR and move to secondary no tax as it's your PPR, then your secondary becomes your PPR and again there's no CGT if you sell that. In the short term though are their any gains to be had from rental income - is mortgage interest or maintenance deductible from your rental income etc etc

      Hey Melissa - We actually have a video on Rental Income Tax already in case you missed it, I've left a link below. It's somewhat of a beginner overview and you might be beyond it in your own research but we do plan to delve into a more detailed overview over the coming months. Subscribe to stay tuned for that!

    • @TheLearningsReport
      @TheLearningsReport  2 роки тому +1

      Depending on the broker, the cash positions in your brokerage account are insured up to a certain amount (varies by broker).
      For the shares themselves, again, the broker usually holds custody of them on your behalf - but doesn't technically own them, so you'll likely still be able to get access to those shares even if things do go badly.

      No sweat! Personally, I'm a big fan of IBKR as across the board it has the most features and optionality when it comes to investing products (imo). For a beginner, it might seem a bit overwhelming, but a lot of the 'fluff' can be ignored if you simply just want to buy & hold. That being said, for ETFs (from an Irish standpoint) I also think Degiro is a good option. ETFs on Trading 212 (currently) are limited for Irish/EU investors also - so keep that in mind too.
      Like yourself, a single provider is my preference also - so as we flag in IBKR vid, if you plan to be a lifetime investor, you may as well start with an advanced platform and learn to use it as opposed to starting with something basic and then getting frustrated when you want to access more features but don't have that option!
      In short though, it comes down to you and what you're most comfortable with.
      Hope that helps!

      I'm general, we think T212 is good for the intermediate investor. Pie function is great, especially if you want to avoid the ETF tax. However, for a long term investor, you may come across issues when trying to transfer your positions out as T212 don't currently allow it (they may in the future).

    • @TheLearningsReport
      @TheLearningsReport  3 роки тому +1

      Good evening sir! Sorry for the late response on this - was enjoying some Portuguese sun.
      A little confused by your question: are you investing from Ireland yourself? To the best of my knowledge, since February 2018 Irish investors are no longer able to access US domiciled ETFs due to a change in regulations. Which platforms have you noticed them on? You might be seeing CFD versions of the ETF perhaps 🤔
      Also, just to avoid confusion, just because an ETF holds US based companies, doesn't mean the ETF is US domiciled. e.g. there are plenty of S&P 500 ETFs that are domiciled in Ireland, and thus are open to Irish investors. Apologies if thats stating the obvious, but just in case.
      A couple of sources for you to review (the last one gives a nice overview and explains that you may want to avoid the US domiciled ETFs even if you do have access to them):
      www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Investing_from_Ireland#Taxation_of_US_ETFs
      www.irishtimes.com/business/personal-finance/don-t-invest-in-an-etf-until-you-understand-the-tax-1.3421331
