⛵️Instagram / totaljoyrider Here we're looking at some rig settings for the Hobie 14. This is how we set our boat up so that it feels great in the strong wind.

Raced a 14 last in 1987. Still have the boat. Mostly light wind lake sailing in New Orleans and colorado. Don't remember too much about mast rake measurement. Some people while on the water adjusted rake going upwind vs down or on reach. Big thing was lifting one rudder out of water on downwind. And of course body position to keep from pitch poling. Also in light wind the boat would not always tack. Trick was to backwind and go backwards to turn the boat , like backing out of a parking spot and then take off when the sail caught wind.
Mine did not have the dolphin striker or the under tramp support wire. No hike out strap either. Pretty basic but great fun.
Good to see a 14 active. Mine will be again once my son is out of college.
hobie 14 turbo rig owner with no exp
Oh, 👍👍 for that rudder service video. First thing I did when bought the H14.
Thank you so much! We have a 14 we are renovating.
Awesome!!!!!
Anything to sharpen our little H14 is solid gold. And coming from you makes it Platinum bro!!
👊😎
too kind@!
Joseph Bennett bro
classic hobie14 turbo rig talk bro
Thank you. Hope to see you in Australia one day.
I hope so too!
The cable that runs under the trampoline on the H14 is also used to anchor the jib tackle for the jib on the turbo model.
Yes, it also gives extra strength to the shroud anchor plates.
I'm not sure which cat tip video you mentioned this joe, but the dolphin striker tension... How do u know it's right and when do u need to replace it? Thanks
Getting a look at the 14’ here because I just found on- it’s gonna need some love b4 it hits the water but damn it looks like it will rippppp
Oh yes! Once you find out how to make it go forwards it's so much fun.
Hi Joe... Where can I purchase the rig tension instrument you are using? How much works it cost?
Hi
I use a Hook and Eye Turnbuckle adjuster to tension de forestay wire instead of the original chain plate with holes. Its way easier to set the mast rake and tension.
cheers.
That's a great idea! That'll certainly make it a lot easier.
Great idea ? Can you post a picture of it Harry ?
any tips on over rotation of the mast - would that indicate more tension is needed on the shrouds? - my mast looks like its rotating too far despite the traveller centralised and the main sheet blocked out - any body got any notions? - cheers.
If your's is anything like ours, it's probably over rotating because the stops have worn away from the base of the mast and mast step.
Sheeting in actually works the opposite and pushes the mast around more, shroud tension won't make any difference.
I think the only solution is to replace the mast base and step.
@@JoyriderTV much appreciated JB :)
So is their tension on both shrouds at the same time. When my mast lays to one side the opposite shroud has quite a bit of play.
yes there should be tension but when the rig is loaded with pressure the leeward shroud will always be a bit loose.
@@JoyriderTV Thanks much!! I will need to do some adjusting.
Hmm my h14 has a dolphin striker but no cable under the trampoline. Sounds important! Do they sell those kits?
Hobie cat will supply it
I'm absolutely not claiming to be an expert, but I think the cable under the trampoline is there to connect the jib blocks to in the turbo version. Hence the eyelets in the tramp.
@@sniffydog1 ahh thanks I looked it up and sure enough it's a jib block support wire, part #80201300
@@sniffydog1 you are right, i completely forgot about that as we haven't had a jib on our 14 for a very long time.
I would say that it adds a significant bit of extra strength to the shroud anchor points as well
Is this in Vasiliki?
yes!
Wow! When I went there were loads of windsurfers, do you notice them at all?
@@Sofi-pv7ei they are still here in abundance!
