⛵️Instagram / totaljoyrider The Hobie 14 is notoriously difficult when it comes to taking and getting going after being stalled.
Here I'm going through the pain of getting it wrong so that you don't have to!
We're looking at different aspects that help and hinder performance in the lighter winds.

Bro, on behalf of the whole, albeit small, H14 nation, thank you. That was an excellent clinic on that craft.

I do not feel nearly so bad about having difficulty doing this, now.

Spent all day yesterday failed H14 tacks and just kept telling myself even Joe has a tough time 😇 Thanks for your help!

Glad I'm not the only one to fail on Hobie tacking.

Thanks for this man, today I took out my 14 for the first time, and I struggled with the tacks for sure. I came out of a tack, didn’t have the main out, and I was all the way in the rear leeward side, and I flipped it. I’m 15, 130 lbs, and I had to get help to right it 😭(I need a mast float)

You’re perfect Joe, I have learn lots of things on the Hobie 16 thanks to you! At the time I bought a 14, you’re doing video on it, perfect timing!!!

I do what I call ‘super tacks’. On light days I use the shorter rudder extension and do extremely fast tacks.

Okay, sorry to say, watching even you struggle to turn that boat makes me feel ALOT better JB. Can't tell you how many times I've spent extended periods in chains on our 14, especially the first summer. Usually having to hop in the water to "steer wrastle" it away from the wind.

Your 14 videos from last year were incredibly helpful... and this one adds more to the story. Great to see the results of experimentation. Last year I gave up my Dart18 and bought a Topaz14Xtreme... which appears to have very similar characteristics to the Hobie14. It was embarrassing to sail with other boats... I could thrash almost everything.. even the bigger cats... but as soon as it's time to tack... disaster. I've improved... and your summary is spot on. Great stuff... enjoy all your videos.

I have the same problem on my Getaway. Excited to try this technique. Thanks!

Great videos, super helpful. I would live a version of turning a Hobie 14 with a crew aboard focusing on weight distribution.

Ok if Joe is having issues, I don't feel so bad. On a positive note, the difficulty of tacking the 14 was enough to convince my wife I needed a 16 (and a 14 turbo lol).

Dude......you crack me up!!! Brilliant video, gutsy, balls out sailing.....most difficult boat ever built to tack in light wind. Anyone that wants to prove their salt needs to sail an old 14 in light wind. You’re spot on in pulling the boom/main ALL the way toward you.......don’t be too hasty to get the sail to flop over......the more barren tension you have...the longer you’re going to have to wait.....I also try to shift my weight forward as I go through all of this to create more “tenderness/life” in the bows.....I sort of change sides in an arc as far as my weighting of the boat. I consider you an expert......not trying to preach.....really difficult boat....just adding some “on the job training skill”

I JUST FELT GREAT WATCHING YOU STRUGGLE THE SAME WAY I DO WHEN TACKING WITH MY NACRA 14. MY ADVICE DO THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF TACKS TO GET YOU TO YOUR DESTINATION AND YOU HAVE TO BECOME A MASTER OF REVERSING THE RUDDERS

I tried the Hobie 14 in cross shore wind....it was like a rodeo ride, the recorded track did not make any sense at all!!! Ultimate survival tour ;) !!

Struggled with the 14 last year. It even refused to jibe with the wrong sail position and simply stopped going 😉. A lot to learn on a Hobie 14. Hopefully I could try this summer, again.
