    ⛵️Instagram / totaljoyrider The mainsail area of a Hobie 16 is just under 14m2, unfortunately I couldn’t find any information regarding the reefed sail area. My best guess is that it is reduced by around 5m2 leaving you with 9m2 on the main.
    There will be another video coming reading the sailing of the 16 with the reef (once we have some strong wind)
    Thanks for watching.

    7:20 Hi Jo, I rember that we used a hc-14 sail instead of reefing the Hobie Cat 16 sail and the second main halyard wire squeeze fits exactly. If we assume a 5-batten sail (the older one, the new has 6) then it is about 10 m². The 6-batten Sail I believe is about 10,43 m². it would be very funny if you would use your self made HC 14 EVO sail at high Wind. This should work very well. Very good job Joe Thanks!

    Thank you for the video. I’ve been thinking about just practicing reefing on a calm day but haven’t got the chance. Thank you. Would be interested in seeing the difference in power while reefed vs full sail.

    Wonder if the boat turns turtle more easily when reefed?

    Reefing can allow you to go faster than you would otherwise, if it allows you to maintain good sheet tension rather than a full sail that has to be sheeted and traveled out to a great extent.

      @@JoyriderTV And, while I'm asking, how are you mooring those Hobies? Mine has no where to attach to.
      And one last, looks like it's okay to keep the mainsail up over the weekend? That thing is a BEAR to get hoisted. 10X harder than the H14.

      @@steverogers1976 as well as lubricating the mast track with silicone, just wetting the bolt rope will help. Also check the sheave wheel at the top and bottom of the mast - that can sometimes be a source of great friction.

    Hey Joe, You sure about tying the intermediates to the boom ?
    I was taught that’s a no no due to exactly as you say , the sails not strong there and so they tear out.

    • @DialedN_07
      @DialedN_07 5 років тому +2

      No choice on a hobie. The foot of the sail slides into the slot in the boom.
      As Joe said in the video, they can not be tight. IMO they may have been slightly tight in the video, but the middle 3 are ONLY there to keep the sail from falling on the tramp. That's the only purpose of those.

      @dialedN07 I totally agree with you. I also would say that I would only use this kind of reefing a sail to get home safely without capsizing.

      Would it be an option to take foot rope out of boom, place the 2 extreme eyes (the tack one directly to the gooseneck pin and the outhaul one attached to boom with tension). We could then only tie the rolled sail, not the boom inside the ones that are not supposed to hold tension to avoid ripping?

    Nice but how would you reef a hobie 18 with the hook system?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  5 років тому

      it would have to be a smaller sail with some kind of halyard modification. And roll away that massive jib!

    • @JoyriderTV

      On the jibs that we have it's not possible. Putting a smaller jib on would be the solution although the boat feels well balanced with the jib as standard.

    Hi Joe, I'm trying to decide if putting reef points or not on a new 16 set. Would you ask for them or would they lower the value of the sail? Over how many knots of wind you would reef a standard 16 with a good crew weighting 120 kg? Thanks!

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 роки тому +1

      I'd say yes, put them in. Reef over 25 knots will make the boat much more manageable.
      It shouldn't lower the value, if anything it should raise the value.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 роки тому +1

      @@robi5722 an original sail from hobie will always have a higher value than a custom sail - with or without reef points. I think all original hobie 16 sails have reefing points.
