    Wish I would have known earlier this week. Capsized my Hobie 18 for the first time ever while I was trapping out and as I was coming from the top my right knee came across the jib block. Well I took a slice down to the bone and it definitely made righting the boat a bit more challenging. The fellow on the boat had never been on a catamaran and I had not had to right the 18 before. The local fire department came out and gave my gapping wound a wrapping and eventually we sailed the boat back to shore and I made my way to the ER for a stitching. Can't wait to get back flying some hull. Nice video Joe.

      As one 5.8 sailor to another Chris, don't be afraid to stand out on the daggerboards when righting the boat. The 5.8 is very solidly built and can take a lot of punishment. For my righting line, I've just got a large bowline that goes around the dolphin striker and comes up over the front beam to loop around the base of the mast step. That will create a very secure anchor point for the line when you come to use it. One idea that my local Nacra dealership (Brisbane Catamaran Centre, Australia) does with all their boats too is tie or splice a loop into the end of the righting line that is fed through a bit of vinyl tube which can give you a decent handhold when necessary and is big enough to get your foot into so you have an extra boost for getting back onto the trampoline.

    A good way to learn how to prevent something is deliberatly not preventing it (for a while)! I did this, not as courageous as these guys in a high speed sailing catamaran, but with my inline skates (free style quite advanced level, so I also had quite some speed) I deliberately fell in many different ways until I had a great sense of the limits. It was actually joyful, like I also see with these guys. Thanks for vid and courage!

    "Are you not entertained?" LOL My favorite is definitely the pitchpole. That's how I lost my "V" on the wind indicator. Without that, I'm learning to see the threads better. I still have wind direction, but no reference for the zone.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  11 місяців тому

      Yes, a good pitchpole will rip anything off that's not solid enough!

  • @hobie16amateurhour52
    @hobie16amateurhour52 3 роки тому +1

    Excellent as usual. You need to do a flippy flippy. To show that in strong winds you need to jump on the hull that was in the water. If you’re standing solo on the bottom hull leaning backwards, you need to make a real effort to get onto the hull where your feet were so you can avoid a flippy flippy. If you have a crew member, they need to know to hold down the hull that’s in the water when the high hull starts coming down for sure. Great video.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому

      Ah yes, the floppy floppy. One of the classics and most used methods to capsize the boat again! It didn't cross my mind to put that one in.

  • @waynetelfer6474
    @waynetelfer6474 3 роки тому +1

    Great stuff. You forgot one...the "Hobie salute", where you stuff a tack in decent wind and wave action. Boat sails backwards, trips on the rudders and goes over backwards, leaving the bows pointing to the sky. Remedy is to climb one hull and tip the boat over on her side and right normally.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому +1

      Aha. Yes, i've seen that performed many times, a true classic

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому

    I have a pretty teaching story of a capsize. Once I capsized on the side with my buddy on the trapeze. I kept the boat upright but he jumped to do not end up on the sails. So he was in the water and I was keeping sailing trying to come back for him. Then I capsized far away from his position and he couldn't swim fast enough to get me. So I was with a man overboard and the boat capsized at 180 degrees in 15/20 knots of wind. I had to wait for the Rib rescue. Lesson was: If one of the crew members falls in the water in strong wind, just capsize with him. (sorry for the bad English it isn't my first language.)

    • @djonny_official
      @djonny_official 3 роки тому +1

      you can drive a man over board maneuver with just the jibe, even in strong wind that’s quite save and you can get him back easily, just let the main go loose

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому +2

      yeah man, good tip. If a member of the team falls in and you're not sure if you'll be able to make a textbook recovery, much better to just stop the boat as soon as possible.

      @djonny_official 3 роки тому

      Turning into the wind should work too

    • @matteobellodi2680

      @@djonny_official it was really windy and I was really light. I tried to tack but the wind was too strong.

    • @djonny_official
      @djonny_official 3 роки тому +1

      yeah I know this problem, sheeting in very strong on both sails and pushing the tiller away should let you tack very slowly, additional you can change sides and hope for the best 😅
