    This is a test to see how much more easily the 14 comes up from capsize solo than the 16.
    This test was carried out in 5 knots (max) wind with 87kg of sailor to right the boat.

      @@caseysmith8469 Hi Casey. I sailed a lot lot lot lot... there in the late 80s, early 90s. I know, yes.. that was a long time ago. July and August are kinda the doldrums. Fall is great when the fronts pass (north wind). I've sailed lots of different stuff; boards, laser, larger boats, mostly Hobie. What about you... what will you be sailing. I do prefer smaller stuff.. more excitement. Boat traffic can be a bit much, too much, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but when the kids are in school the lake is not busy at all... can have it all to yourself sometimes. What do you sail?

    Interesting and informative, as usual
    Also useful @7:30 the way you restart the boat after righting it. Not trivial on a HC14 ! (I know that 😅)

    Excellent instruction as always,
    May be usefull: I used to carry a single rigthing line attached at the stern pylons, running round the front pylons and dolphin striker.
    This way you can stand on the hull holding a piece from the stern and one the bow so you are very stable and able to balance.
    For me this was always very helpfull, especially on a 14.
    Regards, Peter the Netherlands (Liesje's dad)

    Would grabbing a trapeze line be an option ... no need to carry capsize rope. Own a nacra58

    hey joe love your stuff. i bought a 14 turbo last year for days i can't sail my tiger (windy no crew) . i had difficulty righting it because as it came up just as i was about to reach for the dolphin striker it would roll over BACKWARDS! it does have a bob on. have you encountered this?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  2 роки тому

      Yes, this would be quite regular when it's extremely windy.
      You've just got to get that striker.

    • @nickprice7348
      @nickprice7348 2 роки тому

      Just sit on the hull you are standing on or grab it. If you roll backwards, your standing too far back on the hull. The normal position Ievel with the front beam. You may have water in your hull, which will make that happen also. Find the holes with soapy water and a blower in the bung hole and fix them up.

  • @ghimdohghyun

    Excellent!
    More additional one..
    First, if you're on sailing, you must be released main sail sheet please.
    Why? Because on sailing, you're fit/fix to cam cleating main sail sheet.
    Release main sail sheet, first.
    Do not forget.

    So I was out sailing my h14 today and fliped 5 times turns out I had a crack in one hull and it totally flooded. Needed to be towed into shore but found large soft spots all across the inner center of the hull when I was working or weighting it. where exactly should you be standing as you pull your righting line? I assume if my hull wasn't sinking as I got up to pull it would have been an easy time but wouldn't mind some tips.

      Sorry to hear that your hull has issues.
      I'll answer your question in the Q+A on Friday - it's basically the same as for a 16

    do you have another recommendation for a first car roof transportable cat/sailing boat?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  4 роки тому

      I think that the Dart 15 is probably leading the way there, i'm not sure which of the plastic more modern catamarans are car toppable.

    • @herohoistsaustralia4502
      @herohoistsaustralia4502 2 роки тому +1

      Well, if u were in Australia, the Windrush 14 has hulls that swing inwards - to allow you to car-top... not sure if you're willing to order and import 1 to Germany? It'd be tres expensive - but, they're a GREAT design... you could even specify a 2-piece mast - which was originally an option on the early boats...
      Keep in mind you need oversize roof racks that can support the weight of the boat... and that certain cars have a maximum roof load rating - which in most cases is BS - but you should be aware of it...
      :)

    My limited experience of capsizing has been nowhere as easy as this. Firstly, even with a mast head float, the wind pushing on the underside of the trampoline pushed the mast underwater resulting in a full turtle. Once righted to 90 degrees, the sails acted as an anchor, putting the hulls perpendicular to the wind. Whatever I did, the bows wouldn't go into wind and it seemed that the pressure of the wind on top of the sails kept them down on the water (even though I'd slackened the sheets). Do you think furling the jib would help (it's a Turbo)?

    Bonjour, pour une démonstration de redressage les conditions sont très mal choisies !!! Avec du vent (3 à 6 Bf) et des vagues 3 minutes suffisent pour redresser en étant à l envers ! L enchaînement des postures est bien spécifiques au HC 14 ... C.D.

    If I don’t have a dolphin striker where should I tie my righting line?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому +1

      Around the front beam so that It goes around the mast will be ideal.
      I'll make a short video to demonstrate.

      Dual righting lines. Get 2 pockets sewn onto the trampoline at each front corner. Make the pockets with elastic at the front so they hold in the righting ropes, but not so tight that you need to struggle to extract them. This is what I do on my Windrush 14 - which has no dolphin striker - and it works perfectly. You can also easily extract the righting line if the boat turtles - just by reaching under and pulling them out. The other benefit of this approach is that the ropes are very easy to simply stuff back into the pocket after use.
      Make sure you tie figure 8 knots every metre or so along the length of the line - so you have something easy to pull against...
      Use relatively heavy 'textured' line - not the skinnier / slippery kind of rope - which will make life difficult.
      The lines are tied off to the front beam… if no point to tie off to, get 2 grommets inserted at front of tramp directly in front of the pockets - and tie the end off through them and round the front beam...
      :)

    • @nickprice7348
      @nickprice7348 2 роки тому

      You just lace the righting line through the lacing of the tramp so it pulls out when grabing the end. It's about the right length if you go up to back beam and back to the mast.

    So, I surmise, it would be a bad day if I dump our Classic H18. Best never to do that, ever. Right?
    Or would a Bob on the mast rescue me?

    • @JoyriderTV

      You'd either need some good wind (16 knots) or a good amount of weight - 140 kgs. Or use the bag method!
