Another thing to add to the illegal/title float aspect: leaving the date blank.
With a date, the buyer has 30 days to put it in their name. Afterwards, they are subject to late fees. Also without a date; it causes the sale to be incomplete, and can therefore still come back to the seller in case of an accident/crime.
No date= no official sale took place yet.
Some people will leave the date blank on broke down cars to give the buyer time to fix it and not be subject to late fees.
Also another thing to take into account when registering cars in your name before flipping them; insurance.
In some states, like Texas, they have made it to where you need to get insurance before being able to get the title transferred.
Florida too
@@chromatix5342 Florida and Texas, very liberal big government states apparently.
You can get the title transfer in the dmv just say no one is driving the car it’s going to be sitting then you’ll have to put no insurance on it
@@1stopshopautorepairs yea, I didn't know you could do "Title Only" which doesn't require insurance/inspection. Recently did it with a car that needed a bonded title. Didn't want to get insurance on it in case something happened and couldn't get the bonded title.

Another risk of skipping the title from the buyers perspective is if there is a problem with the title at the DMV, now you have to try to find the titled owner to straighten in out (in this case Alyssa).
Very informative. I know someone that is doing the illegal way & was wondering if he could actually do it that way. Now I know which direction I should take. I definitely dont want to get caught up on some illegal stuff &go to jail or be fined like a bank robber. Thank for the video! 👍🏽

Awesome video! Right now I’m just starting and I’m doing my first car as a private sale. Since I buy from Copart, the title is in my name and I pay sales tax on it. If I don’t plan on driving the car, I won’t bother with plates. My goal is to get a used car dealers license her in Michigan. It is beneficial in so many ways. Just going to have to work everything out for the application process. Keep up with the great videos. I’m learning a ton of useful info.
i want to do the same thing my please contact with me! I am in Portage MI
In Canada its pretty much the same. I bought a car from a dealer without putting it in my name and sold it to another person. OMVIC which is a part of the law that deals with dealers caught up to me and charged me for being a "curber" and I had no defense and had to pay a $350 fine. HOWEVER, as long as the car is for "personal use" there is no real limit on how many you can purchase and the other 10 cars they tried to charge me with I easily beat it because I put them in my name and plated them and after driving them for a short while sold them, hence the personal use loop hole.
Floating the titles is def a felony in all states. I’ve had 2 friends go to jail for doing that. I’ve had several other friends be ok. If you’re going to float the title, do not sell junk! Make sure your car is good or that the buyer knows all the issues. It will bite you in the ass sooner or later 100% if you sell junk. I am a licensed dealer.
Hey man I got a question, hope you dont mind advising me. Im looking to start small time, buying and selling as individual.

Good info, and I pretty much knew this since that’s how it works here in NJ as well. I’m in the midst of negotiating a lease to own property purchase so I can start the dealer license process. If you could do a video on that process and maybe some pitfalls to watch out for in the beginning, I’d appreciate it.
How did it go ?
@@quancast1141 @GarySAK_ Also want an update.
I know in my state (Nebraska) they've made it pretty much impossible to title skip now. For a title transfer to occur from a private sale, the DMV requires a notarized bill of sale. Which means the actual buyer and seller much be present with ID when filling out the bill of sale. Without that, they will not register the vehicle and print a new title.
Weird , I live in Omaha and I've never had a notarized bill of sale. My last bill of sale was of a scrap piece of paper lol
Thanks for telling me to avoid Nebraska
Thanks for the good video and to your "Lovely Assistant" AKA - Your significant other...:)
Thank you so much for this video I just bought a 2000 mustang an a seller put her name in wrong spot an I cant get car out the impound until they auction it off if I'm the highest bidder. This video was so helpful to me thank you so much for the info an I already have subscribed your the best man .
A typical seen at the dealers auction. One owner title with dealer re-assignments extending beyond the horizon as far as the eye can see. Never retailed after the original buyer but floating in the infinite dealer auction. One way the original owner can safe guard is to call or write to his/her state that the car is no longer in their possession. Not a guarantee but an ideal nevertheless.
The title will always be open until it is registered regardless of buyers information on the title or not. You can drive away and wreck the car then deny the purchase and Alyssa can get sued because the paperwork was never filed. I've seen it happen.
THANK YOU FOR SHOWUNG US THE IN'S AND OUT'S ON EVERYTHING GOOD AND BAD !!

Great information! I see people doing open titles all the time in Cali, and I'm glad I saw this before selling my whip!
Title skips are awesome 😂
Valuable information anytime you’re buying a vehicle make sure you get a clean title definitely pay your taxes if the vehicle is shady walk away from it if the owner has no title walk away from
You should have mentioned put the correct amount of money in the sale area of the title.
I sold a Monte Carlo (show car completely restored better than new Bigger motor etc.) The guy who bought it asked me to leave price blank.
Long story short he gave me 15k cash. He put down he bought it for 500.00 2 weeks later he totaled it.
His insurance company called me said he told them he paid 15k but title said 500.00
They tried getting me for fraud of taxes. I told them what it said on title was what he paid.
So he saved money on taxes registering the car. However the insurance company would not pay out his claim.
😂🤣its never worth scamming the system

Of Course: Here In CT They Tax You on "Blue Book" vs Bill of Sale. The Whole Concept of Insurance Companies and Warranties is Solely NOT To Pay Period!! Rest assure One Can Always Find a Loophole.

In most states you need the sellers signature notarized. Seems like a legit reason to have it signed & notarized before you even show up to buy it.

Here in Pennsylvania we can only sell 5 a year as well without a dealer's license. If you have a relationship with a car dealer you can be added as a salesman at that dealership and if permitted by the dealer buy cars at the auction, keeping them in the dealer's name and selling them through the dealer and giving him a cut like 70/30, you get 70% of the profit, the dealer gets 30%. Here in PA title we can't have open titles, notaries mostly won't do it, or frown on transferring an open title.
I literally find it impossible that you never took the 3rd option “back when you were starting”
Never needed to. I got my dealer license pretty early on

But u forgot one thing, u can alsoxbuy the vehicle and not have to register it, u just put the title on ur name only. If u want to sell it legally, at least this way, u wont have to pay for registerstion & insurance. Just sales tax, but even sales tax- we usually put down a lower price
In Oregon if you buy a car with the intent to resell it at a profit you need a dealers license. There is no five car rule.

I believe Florida is 3 cars bought ( and titled) and sold within a year is the limit. You can buy more than that you just can't sell the 4th one purchased and titled within a year. FL dealer licence requires a $25,000 bond and a location/lot to store them and other items.
Can you clarify something here. You said the state will only let you register 5 cars in your name. That is not true. You can buy, register and keep as many cars as you want. The legal part comes in when you sell those cars and they are transferred out of your name. That is where the 5 car limit comes from. Car collectors, like Jay Leno, register every car they buy and the DMV says nothing, as they want that money. They will only come after you if you sell more than 5 cars in a year, or whatever the number is in your state.
Correct
We’re here talking about car flipping. So we’re obviously going to resell them. What you said was so unnecessary 🤦🏻♂️
You can register and pay to have as many cars as you want registered in your name. Sell at least in my state five cars per year in your name
@@davidt7431 I was clarifying what he said, which, as he said it, was not true. I had been in that situation as a car collector. They say nothing when you, abiding by the law, transfer your collector cars into your name within the stipulated time period, but if you want to sell off a part of your collection after a number of years, you are breaking the law. I was clarifying that.
What was unnecessary about that?
Which is dumb because in the end when the next person registers paying more taxes on it within that year. Then the state gets more money from it. Sad thing is the state always has to know how much your making. They always want to earn the money you earned and worked for.
Arizona doesn’t charge tax on private party used vehicles. According to state law, individuals may sell as many as six vehicles in a 12-month period without first obtaining dealer's licenses.
Shhhhhhh 🤫 you telling my secrets bro
Great video! So once you buy a car and want to flip it asap. How does insurance work? Do you have to get it insured right away?
Lets say you get a buyer that wants to test drive it but you still haven't gotten insurance for the car. Who is reliable legaly if they have accident?
Great video. Taxes!!!
Id buy anything shes selling!
They do have the same eyes. I bet that is his precious daughter. Good info here.
Just an assistant
Alot of backyard flippers buy cars and ask the seller to leave it open. When it's open anybody can then become the owner and the guy that's flipping cars his name is never put on the title therefore he can sell all day every day. It is sketchy but if you only flip a car here and there that's probably the best option to avoid paying anything or being liable.
Best option if u dont get caught. Not best option for seller. He now has left title open, gave somebody the green light to do something wrong/illegal. And seller is liable

the car can be titled into and LLC or land trust then you can either sell the LLC that owns the car or change the beneficiary of the Land trust that owns the car and its better to have a LLC be the trustee for control and if you're using the land trust way and you do not have to pay taxes or register property that is owned by an entity or trust unless it leaves the LLC or Trust
In PA you cant do the open title at all. When you sell the vehicle both parties have to be at a Notary and produce ID that is scanned and saved with the title transfer. If you have the open title and try to sell on the notary will require the original owner be present. Again both id's of buyer and seller.
Great job explaining things car related. I have a quick question can you sell to the public with a wholesale license or just the state allotment of 6 cars a year????
Great video, however i would hate to know that amount of people beating the system and shortchanging the legitimate people (dealers that pay to operate) and the states that don't collect the proper amount due.

I found little easy loop hole if you ever go to buy a car and the title already has a buyers name on the title and its not your when you get the title.I had this happen before on a 69 Camaro i bought. What i did was when i went to the dmv i just put may name on a second buyer and ever thing was cool. Then when i sold the car i just signed both names as the seller. The seller doesn't have to be present to sell the car.Title just needs to be signed .And you can get in trouble because the seller already gave you permission to take the car.
I’ve floated titles like a lot of flippers do. Luckily In the province I live in now we don’t have titles and only need a bill of sale and then you go get a new registration. We can write a bill of sale on a napkin if we want. You don’t need to register the car and the government can’t track your five cars if you don’t. It’s a flippers dream lol
@@DenisBonichov Alberta, Canada. It makes flipping much easier lol
From what I've read this is a felony in Texas. State of Texas doesn't much care for title skipping as I understand it such a transaction robs the state of sales tax for the skipped transactions; not to mention the host of liabilities the buyer and seller assume and incur (such transactions lack consumer protections). Also I'd never deal with a title skipper cause you don't know how they came about possession of the vehicle and title. The concern there is if the car is stolen, the original seller's signature/information was forged, or if another party might have a claim to it. If I'm buying a car from someone I want to see the title and a government ID to confirm ownership. Another issue is if you buy a skipped title car and discover issues and try to get in touch with the seller you'll likely find they've disappeared, and don't return calls. Best not to buy a car like this, and really best not to sell a car by skipping title; just not worth the overall risk.
Very much not recommended
Good point! Sad that there's so much fraud in selling/buying used cars privately.
It Is Sad; as I Would Rather Buy a Car Off Someone's Lawn as You Get Screwed By Delars and Auctions..

I dont change ownership until I'm ready to drive it...I dont put on a sold date until I'm ready...in Ontario we have to have vehicle appraisal for older stuff then 5 years old.....all my cars have been bought for 100 or 200 bucks...seller and owner win for cash in pocket no matter what I actually pay

So if you buy a car to fix it and flip it, and say you buy it and then plan on selling it like the next week, not really driving other then to your driveway to fix it then immediately sell it, would you still have to go to the dmv to get the vehicle registered and pay all the registration fees even though your just holding onto the car for a very short amount of time?
Thanks! If you are not licensed do you also have to get an insurance policy on the vehicle you are flipping?
