They don't teach us this in school but our parents don't teach us either. Millions of kids completely at a disadvantage bc they were never properly prepared for life. thank god for the internet honestly. AND MAYA!!!!
I was just having a convo about this with my girlfriend the other day. Like our parents aren’t teaching us and that’s because they don’t know either. So it just comes a point where somebody in the family has to stop the generational ignorance and the dialogue about money and adulting. It’s sad we have to come to UA-cam for this info but thank god for her and this video!
True! But at least we have YT, etc. My father (who was born in 1943) said when he first came to our hometown from the South he didn't know how to use an elevator! I was like wow. So now that I'm an adult, around Maya's age, I realize that most parents did the best they could with what they knew. They did teach me a lot of character though. One wise thing mother always said was, "you don't really know someone until you've seen them mad". But yeah...many many details I've figured out myself. Each generation has more access to info though.
Plus all the abused kids focused on survival- their parents definitely didn't prepare them. Esp. when they get kicked out of their homes onto the streets with no money. At that point education becomes a privilege, and even education needs to change/reform.

I agree with all this---although I think you could also add: 'Get out of your comfort zone.' Part of growing and adulting is reaching beyond the familiar and experiencing new or unknown things. These are the moments when we grow.
You'll never be able to grow up If someone close to you is yelling at you, belittling you, disrespecting your personal boundaries (walking into your bedroom unannounced or sifting through your belongings without permission), intimidating you, physically harming you, or insulting you constantly. Self respect cannot be reached...

@@emmanuelt257 yeah it’s been cool. One thing I rlly realized is that life isn’t a race and there’s no need to panic. Really hone in on what you wanna do in life, and make small reasonable goals towards it. Small goals that might not feel like they make a difference but they accumulate a lot over time bro trust.. after high school shi get rlly lonely, use that time to really self improve, learn, and socialize. Discipline something that can be built too, and you only fail if you completely give up.. my fault for long message but learned a lot
I may only be 15, but it’s never bad to start being more mature now. I wanna know these things so when I’m into Adulthood, I won’t be clueless. Especially since they don’t teach us these things at school.
Much needed video! Such a positive message! I’m proud to say I’ve been to all my annual appointment for the year (General, GYN, Dental, & Vision exams) dome!
1,000% !! Love all of these. I’m a Financial Coach and the reason I became one is because I graduated without a FRIGGIN CLUE how to financially adult in the real world!!!! (Numbers are terrible and boring but unfortunately you can’t ignore them. Especially if you’ve got thousands of dollars in school debt 🤦♀️😭)
@@shamelessmaya I think everyone should! They really should teach these skills in school. I don't know how the school system was created without including things like 'what the heck is a credit score' and 'this is why saving for retirement is important'. 🤔 If you're interested in course recommendations, or coaching (I don't have a course yet, but I do offer 1-1's!) feel free to message me and we'll find a time to chat. Excellent tips Mya, it has been really hard navigating this thing called "life", sometimes I don't even want to do this anymore, but I am learning every day, thanks for your positivity. Sometimes you just have to keep trying.
Actually, I haven't been to the doctor about 5 years. I was perfectly healthy the last time then. My body started being weird so I went a couple months back in February, found out I have PCOS AND Fibroids!!!!!!!!! *sigh* Luckily, we've caught them in the early stages so I'm working on it now. I wish I had continue going yearly but I'm so glad I went when I did because it could've been worse!
This came at the perfect time for me, I'm moving on my own for the first time and this was needed. Like, today is actually move day and this got me pumped. Thanks maya for getting me right
Turned 18 in September, I'm the youngest of 5 kids and grew up with an abusive/neglectful parent, as well as ptsd, depression, adhd, and anxiety, which were undiagnosed for majority of my life. I no longer want my disadvantages to shape me and my life and I want to take responsibility of myself. I'm now entering a really serious relationship and I'm starting to realize that I lack so much maturity and responsibility and many qualities that are necessary in becoming a functional adult. My biggest fear is to be a useless person in society and a disappointment to my friends and family. Hopefully starting 2024 I can begin to learn everything that I wasn't taught on how to be a mature and responsible person and know how to fully be in control of myself and my goals. I want to start to see myself as more than just my past or my diagnoses. Fingers crossed I can stay focused and determined enough!!
You're definitely not the only one. My New Years resolution was to get ALL of my regular check-ups. For me that means a dental cleaning/consult, a physical, a gyno annual, a visit to the dermatologist, not to mention staying in therapy! IM TIEDDDD and these co-pays etc!
I love that! Ask for help. It takes an amazing amount of self- awareness to know when to dig deep and focus on yourself or when to reach out. Amazing video all round! and funny ☺

@Egypts honestly, I’ve only had one that felt really uncomfortable. Oddly enough, it was the only time I went with a female OBGYN. At least in my experience, the male OBGYNs I had were able to talk me through the process and make the experience more comfortable for me. It’s a pretty quick process nonetheless. You got this!
I was hesitant to click on this vid because a lot of these feel very click-bait. But props to your use of transitions to make jokes about yourself. It was a nice touch without being cringey or "flexing" like a lot of workout help vids are. Do you also do production/post yourself, or is there a team involved?
Love this video and just so you know some libraries have programs informing young adults about Adulting 101 topics (for me it’s the New York Public Library). I wish this topic was something that our public education addressed but luckily we have you and other organizations educating us. Anyway, thanks for these awesome tips!
I’ve been putting this video on pause “until I had time”. So grateful that I clicked on this today. Love this!! Thank you for investing in your audience with these videos!
I'm 30 now and I haven't had a physical since I was just about to turn 19 due to trauma lol I hate shots and they used to pin me down so I was on edge about doctors touching me for the longest time. But I finally built up the courage and bravery to seek a primary! I am definitely adulting Lol it's scary stuff but it's also important and it makes you feel a lot more confident 😊
I am so grateful for my parents for promoting me to do chores, taking responsibilities for my actions, diplomacy, teaching me how to manage money and discipline step by step from my thirteens. I guess that's something Indian parents are good at, they won't let you live in a fairytale or put too much pressure on following your 'dreams'. They will show you the reality of the world and a practical career choice or atleast one or two backups if your following a career which doesn't have stability. P.S. that's just my parents I don't know about others. But hey you gotta admit Indian parents will make you face the harsh reality of life.

My last routine check up was too long ago! This video was a good reminder, thank you Maya! Something I do for my finances is to use a weekday (not a holiday) to run errands. I got the idea from someone on the internet, but I don't remember who! I'll add my wellness check ups to that "spring cleaning" day as well.

I honestly don’t know how so many people aren’t doing these things? By the time I hit 25 I started getting my physicals every year & my well woman exams every year. I’ve also raised an abused kitten & I make time to go swimming or go on day trips. As far as finances I just follow the survival tactics that rich black folks did in the Great Depression… oh and I also listen to financial literacy podcasts about estate planning. As far as being a good friend I just now learned how to do that at 28.

I was raised in Southern California. The first year of Junior high school/Middle School, was 7th grade. We had "Home Economics." Home Economics included classes called "Foods, Clothing and Banking." I think that would make a great research paper. Find out when they quit teaching those classes and try to find out why. The normal excuse, or I should say reason, is usually funding. They take out the "Arts." For instance, we had drawing, watercolor, pottery, theater, Choir and Band. I would like to know how many of those classes are still in the curriculum.

I'm still 16 and most of these stuff I have been doing for over a year already. I'm surprised people need videos to tell them to be organized, take ownership for their own actions or not to be a jerk to friends. The key factor to anything is, finding out who you are and understanding yourself.
The school education system is extremely outdated considering the four mandatory courses every kid takes are math, english, history and science. Why content like this isn’t at the top of the department of education’s list of priorities to teach the youth is beyond me.
I’m somewhat shocked to hear that stat the people who don’t go to the doctor. I go faithfully because 1) I prioritize health and 2) I’ve watched so many loved ones around me slowly fall ill and not take action. And ill meaning not just being physically sick, but the slow decline of vital health and able to do basic things and not thinking it’s a major problem (eg walking, carrying groceries up the stairs, diabetes, etc). There’s nothing more fulfilling then listening to your self and supporting yourself. I recently just did a video on the same topic pretty sure y’all will like it. Much love ❤️
I've just realised I haven't been to the doctor since 2015 🙈
RLee 🤣 Oh nooo!!!
RLee I haven’t since 2016 ://
Dear don't feel ashamed, now you said it, check a check up soon, and make sure all is good.
RLee same don’t feel bad 😂
O:!!!
I turned 18 this years and don't t feel any different. I needed this, thanks
I just turned 17 today. I’m terrified asf
how are you right now? You’re probably like 19 huh?
@@emmanuelt257 yeah it’s been cool. One thing I rlly realized is that life isn’t a race and there’s no need to panic. Really hone in on what you wanna do in life, and make small reasonable goals towards it. Small goals that might not feel like they make a difference but they accumulate a lot over time bro trust.. after high school shi get rlly lonely, use that time to really self improve, learn, and socialize. Discipline something that can be built too, and you only fail if you completely give up.. my fault for long message but learned a lot
@@tommygoncalves9569thank you for this follow up i’m 18 rn , i rlly needed this
@@tommygoncalves9569awesome man
@@tommygoncalves9569hows life?
I may only be 15, but it’s never bad to start being more mature now. I wanna know these things so when I’m into Adulthood, I won’t be clueless. Especially since they don’t teach us these things at school.
Good things
Where was this vid when I needed it five years ago?! Love your work Maya
Emily Daly - TRACKING ED I agree. I could use this information a lot 😂
Where was this video when I was growing up!!! Hence this video has arrived 🙏🏾💕
Seriously!
Im getting closer to 30 so im definitely working on elevating myself to be a more organized, self-sufficient adult.
Thank you so much for sharing this Maya, I need to watch this video every single day I wake up. Going to work on some suggestions you gave us ❤️
Grace On Your Dash Grace you are so damn AWESOME!!!
Same!!! Thanks Maya 🙌 kinda feel like it’s time to book that doctors and dentist appointment 😅
Much needed video! Such a positive message! I’m proud to say I’ve been to all my annual appointment for the year (General, GYN, Dental, & Vision exams) dome!
Shit man. I needed this today. Soon turning 25 and I'm realizing how REAL adulting is becoming.
hmmm it is 😓 reallll
Im learning to harvesting and can fermenting my own food so i wont have to worry about buying it so much making life easy with knowledge.
Yea it is
Ready Set Life man...this is powerful. I think I should take a financial course
@@shamelessmaya I think everyone should! They really should teach these skills in school. I don't know how the school system was created without including things like 'what the heck is a credit score' and 'this is why saving for retirement is important'. 🤔
If you're interested in course recommendations, or coaching (I don't have a course yet, but I do offer 1-1's!) feel free to message me and we'll find a time to chat. I'm a fan from your videos (found you from trying to figure out UA-cam lighting hahhaa) and you've helped me out a lot. I'd love to repay the favour one day! 😊 - My website has a contact link, if you go to my channel you can find it!
I went to the lady doctor for the first time in yeaaars a few weeks ago! It was a relief to finally get checked
Turning 18 in a few months. I am terrified. I know I’m not emotionally mature yet. But I need to ready myself.
Definitely financially… thank you for this video!
Videos like these are why I’m thankful for the internet
Lost my cousin to cervical cancer. She was only 45- so this video hit home. I schedule my pap a year in advance on my birthday- so I don’t forget the appointment. Side note: Your hair looks amazing Maya!!
Junebug8283 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
You don’t understand... I NEEDED this video sis😩 Perfect delivery! 👌🏾
Me: how to be an adult
High school: chances are, you’ll need to know how to make iron from dirt and carbon more (tho it does cost a couple million dollars, but....)
I have been waiting for this video! Glad to see the technical difficulties are over. 😂❤️
Excellent tips Mya, it has been really hard navigating this thing called "life", sometimes I don't even want to do this anymore, but I am learning every day, thanks for your positivity. Sometimes you just have to keep trying.
such an entertaining and informative video😁 loved this video, I just started my first job so adulting has begun.
You look so beautiful Maya ✨ your hair, your makeup, your outfit 🙌🏽 but I’m sure you already know that!
I'm 20 years old, struggle a lot of my responsibilities. this video is really helpful, thank you.
Same
This came at the perfect time for me, I'm moving on my own for the first time and this was needed. Like, today is actually move day and this got me pumped. Thanks maya for getting me right
Christopher Mack this makes me so happy!!
This came in RIGHT ON TIME starting college this fall and chileeeeee......
I needed this crash course girl . Thx 😭

I like your idea, "everything has a home" when it comes to organization. You seem like you are a wise person, I'm grateful I found your channel
I love that! Ask for help. It takes an amazing amount of self- awareness to know when to dig deep and focus on yourself or when to reach out. Amazing video all round! and funny ☺
Girrrlll you don't know how badly I needed this vid 😭💕
nnadaddy AYE!!!!
I 👏🏼JUST 👏🏼 went and got a pap done today after putting it off for a while 😅
Did it hurt? I’m 19 and scared af
@@Redd91ful it's not very comfortable but it should not hurt. Don't hesitate to tell the practitioner if it's your first one. But don't let fear prevent you from doing this routine exam. Blood tests seem much scarier to me (needles!!!) ;-)
Great list, love that you included taking ownership that is so important
Am 21 with 1 child. And I have been told today I act immature, which hits me very hard. So I needed this video. Thank you🙏
Love this video and just so you know some libraries have programs informing young adults about Adulting 101 topics (for me it’s the New York Public Library).
Thank you I’m 23 and I need this video thanks for the valuable advice 😁✊🏾
Great video. Love the dual sides of Maya. Ive been watching you for years. This was a reminder of why. Great execution. Great message. Great energy.
I'm completely freaking out.
I slowly learned all of this over time. Wish I had seen this 3 years ago lol.
I went last week. Gotta keep myself healthy and reduce the unnecessary stress cuz my baby daughter is watching and learning
But hey you gotta admit Indian parents will make you face the harsh reality of life.
dude Im 19 and really overwhelmed and i feel like i should start earning and start to think about finances but idk how and where to start and all these kids on youtube be making shit ton of money and buying houses at 17 and im in engineering school not earned a dime yet. this makes me so anxious
You should do a series! The things that parents don’t teach you and then sometimes as a young adult we get judged if we don’t know a few things... they never taught us!!! Lmaoo
Cami Ambros man...I feel like that most of my channel. Sometimes we need to go through the fire I guess 😅
You have definitely gained a new sub here. I needed this video as a young mum. Much Love from Africa
Maya is GLOWING. Hair on point, outfit on point. She looks so good!!!
I went last year. here in uk you get invited just before you turn 25. all clear. its important ... don't put it off.
thanks for the tips Maya!!!!! Always feel like me life is a mess lol
I love your videos Maya because you give out advice without getting all life-coachy. Which is nice and feels genuine, I just had to say it, been thinking about it for a while!
I turned 18 this year and I really need this! Thanks! 😭
An annual reminder- thank you Maya 💕💕
Maya, this video was ON TIME. Thank you.
Texas Gal Yes. I wanna start making changes in myself and was in search for a guide to get my on the right foot.
I’m 23 and currently struggling to get a car loan. Idk what I’m doing. Send prayers.
Hey there! Ima 53 year old white guy and I am so impressed with your thoughts and ability to share your trip. I hope my favourite sister and my life hear you too. It's so loaded with reliable knowledge. Thoughtful in process. Engaging and fun! Big thanks! Signed me.

Maya and her Oh Baby Baby Britney Troll have me in stitches. Great tips Maya, so on point. Your hair is doing its own adulting. Super long and healthy again.
Great tips, Maya! You are wise beyond your years. God bless.

My last doc visit was July 2018. It's definitely time for annual. I just got another part-time job and moved my doc visit up on my priority list now that I've got some more income coming in. These are great tips!
Your long hair makes you so much more feminine and young! And this is coming from someone who already thought that of you before with short hair. But wow!!! You look stunning!!!!!!!!

Get the teeth/eye and all over wellbeing checked while the NHS is still available for those under 25yrs.
I'm so happy I found your videos, all your content is exactly what i've been looking for to change. thank you!!
Thank you for sharing such useful and important information!! As a long time subscriber, I can say your content has grown and evolved into something a lot of UA-camrs are missing.. not to say all should be talking about the things you do, I mean they all have a right to create what they want and I still watch.lol But the fact that you include so much more about being a real human being is why I appreciate you!
I'm still 16 and most of these stuff I have been doing for over a year already. I'm surprised people need videos to tell them to be organized, take ownership for their own actions or not to be a jerk to friends. The key factor to anything is, finding out who you are and understanding yourself.
I'm 16 aswell
Thank you so much, I'm 15 and for the past few months I've been stressing about being an adult, this really helps ;)
The school education system is extremely outdated considering the four mandatory courses every kid takes are math, english, history and science. Why content like this isn’t at the top of the department of education’s list of priorities to teach the youth is beyond me.
I'm 16,i watch these videos because my parents are teaching me how to be an adult. I need these tips, thank you. Keep up the great work ❤️❤️
shay 12 YAS girl!!!
Thanks for putting the word out.
DomsFitLife I’m one of those who don’t 😬 but I’m changing! 🙏🏾💕
Omg u look so good I’m loving ur hair and complexion

I agree so much on this. Asking for help really appeals to me. We all need help, unless we are ignorant, imo.
