"Entry level" jobs requiring 3-5 years experience is peak corporate nonsense
exactly. My career involves an AAS degree. No more, no less. Yet the ads still say BS degree. I just say it's actual "BS" filler for HR to justify their job... They do not know my job, never will. I tell people, apply anyway. HR doesn't know the job.. most places need help desperately and they will hire. The place I work has at least 6 openings and we have NOBODY applying!! And the pay is good with a huge sign on bonus. The catch? It's in SWFL and the cost of living here has sKYROCKETED and the pay has not matched the inflation.
Dude I don’t even know what to do I’ve just worked with my mom (she has a business) but that work doesn’t count toward experience for other jobs it’s so wild. Like my whole teen years 12-19 and I have no experience yet worked every single day AND school and now it’s too late , I can’t get 3 years of experience now I have to go to college just to get a crap job that doesn’t need experience….
I recently found out what that could mean
1 to 3 years of experience...in college. Because that's the one of if not the only way to have experience with still needing entry level jobs. I have experience in product design because of my classes and projects outside of class but still need a entry level product design job

They expect you to have 5 years of internships or they are merely trying to poach their competitors recently laid-off former employees on the cheap. There is this persist myth that hiring managers don't expect applicants to meet every single qualification. Literally incompletely qualified people do get some jobs sometimes but it is vanishingly rare. Even then they don't understand that computers can only do exactly what they are told the ATS is going to not even put your application into the enormous pile. In my life experience you need a way to circumnavigate the ATS and have a hiring manager that does find the old-school method weird and/or entitled behavior. Man I wish you didn't have to that song and dance but you do. If it is any consolation you do it and all of a sudden things get way easier if your credentials are actually competitive. You should at the very least feel better that it isn't you being trash you just aren't getting eyes on the legitimacy you can demonstrate with your portfolio. Just some places they just don't like some people for the dumbest reasons the unreasonable credentials is a way to ensure that they need not admit the real reason the dumb reason. Employers are HxC particular to locals counter intuitively narrowing your geographic considerations will improve results despite the narrowing of the total pool of opportunities you are just not going to have any appreciably success with a very distal zip code being a local is going to knock down the number of recurring interviews you will get the face to face interview expedited because it saves them time doing fewer rounds and it is just more convenient since they don't have to orchestrate anything complex they can fit it in whenever is convenient for them and not have it be a major inconvenience for the candidate if it is local they can reschedule short notice guilt free. Really you gotta call upon every personal advantage afforded to you there is no shame in that it isn't scumbaggy. Unless you are going actual unambiguous scam artistry it is fair game. You get the foot in the door and ooh you might start feeling like the economy really is as good as Joey B claims.
every job I've ever applied to and gotten wanted more experience than I had. I think they expect you to lie a little, just as long as you know you have the skills to come in and do the position or pick it up real quick. BS everything, even if it ends in you being embarrassed once in e awhile.
I am in gen z and I must say, the economy does not make it easy to build community in real life. Social media is a tool to escape and it further isolates us in real time.

as someone who quit social media, i don’t scroll at the bus stop, i’m really trying to “take in life:” i still feel lonely. the loneliness isn’t only because of social media, it’s in the culture

I de-bloated my Facebook (all I get on my feed now are posts from local community pages) and have been going to various alcohol-free, face-to-face groups & events for over two years now.
Everybody I meet IRL is either 40+ or neurodiverse/introverted. As a 23-year-old neurotypical extrovert this simply doesn’t work for me. My only other option is going out on a Friday/Saturday night which is a no-no since I don’t drink 😬

For me quarter life crisis (I'm mid-to late twenties so I'm still counting it) is from having ''reality'' (it doesn't need to be this way but it currently is for various reasons) weigh heavily on me for over a decade and things only getting worse. Yet people continue to divide and blame individuals then the systems that in many ways continue to degrade.

I'm Gen Z. I've been working since the state said I was old enough to. I've burnt my hands and arms on searing hot grill tops and fryer oil. I've strained my back lifting sheetrock and I've stood for so long the soles of my shoes have taken the form of my foot. Each time I jump to a higher income, it's simply catching up on ground lost to inflation and higher living costs. We're climbing a ladder that only gets taller the faster we climb. Something has to give.
I'm 36, never married, never got to start a career, and ultimately fell into homelessness during the pandemic. I'm still homeless now, living in an old Toyota Sienna minivan, and trying to start a relationship with a drug addicted woman. I actually work and contribute to this broken society. This shit isn't fair. I wanted a home and a family.

We had this lovely green space in a downtown shopping area. Even if you couldn’t afford to buy anything, you could enjoy the park and green way. The replaced it all with concert venue, smaller instagram picture shops and restaurants, and other stuff you have to pay to enjoy. It’s like if they can’t get money from the use of a space they don’t think it should be there :(

Sounds like you need to find a better place to live. That’s true in urban areas but if you can move somewhere more rural/suburban without losing your job there’s a lot more space.

I live in Moscow, despite western media making up nonsense about everything wrong, and despite it's a megapolis, there are a lot of parks, libraries, museums. you can go for a walk, you can visit somewhere free, you can go to forest to have a picnic or just some nature time. and in smaller towns too. just go anywhere else and see that there are other ways to live

As a gen Z, I briefly remember the early 2000s and how mental health was a taboo topic. I watched classmates mentally suffer and not get help because their parents refused to acknowledge it. I had classmates end their life over it - being bullied behind screens and in school. The last thing we need is to give up our well being and life for a career/job that can fire us at anytime anywhere.

I asked recruiters and people at my university job fair what the best advice is for prospective employees like me and they really only said every time to tailor your CV, resume, cover letter to the job description. It's our job to write it in that we are the exact candidate they want, which means nothing once they truly learn who we are behind the documents. As another gen Z in the job market, expectations for us are through the roof for absolutely no reason. Everyone's out here lying on their applications all to get a foot into the door, yet the company still won't know anything about you until they take a chance on you because they won't pay for it.
**Edit: yes yes, yadda yadda I know from all the comments we all need to fluff or cater the CV to each job and young people are favoured cuz they can be trained. I'm here to critique the fact that algorithms and plainly other excuses made to not also give proper expectations for jobseekers are the result of not being even barely transparent about what the place hiring wants. Areas are saturated, others aren't. Some candidates actually look bad on paper, some just are not the right fit. Supply and demand, I get it. Not to mention where the money is really held and where it is lacking. Of course the real issue is how money is delegated within our worlds, but I can see we have no option but to all work, despite the fact that we don't have enough paying jobs for over how ever many billions of capable workers. What are the people with the money doing with it sitting as a building or in an account to stare at the numbers going up?

I was literally breaking down after graduating highschool in 2018. Right before covid, i searched and searched and could barely find anything on “quarter life crisis” ONE video had like 15k views. Now post covid, its almost a buzzword. Its crazy what c19 has done

It’s not even just adulting that is the issue. I just cried for an hour because everytime my mom tells me to grow up and do something I do it and she doesn’t even take a second to congratulate me on what I’ve done instead she moves to the next thing to berate me for. She has literally drained any energy and excitement I had to accomplish anything in my life because it will never be good enough. And that right there is what makes life seem so less appealing to live. Not the fact that we don’t have money. The fact that whenever we do accomplish one of those goals we have that joy taken away because “oh well time to move onto the next thing”. When we move on from something to quickly we don’t get a chance to actually enjoy the accomplishments we make which in turn just leads us back to where we started.

I’m an RN that works with a whole lot of boomers/gen X and it’s tiring and makes me feel crazy trying to explain to my co-workers and management that I’m not here to make this job my life. I have the job I have to fund my LIFE. To do the things I want to do and eat the food I want to eat, etc. But they’ve made it so much of their life that they can’t even identify the line between work and their life. Gen X is the first generation who can’t retire like their parents did. We have much empathy for millennials, because while they have it worse than us, we’re looking at a challenging retirement as a generation. You can't blame people for how they were raised. What's important is that they now recognise what's required of them, and what the people require of society.
The older generation is out of touch, and that contributes to their lack of compassion. I quit a very toxic job in healthcare that caused me so much stress that I was developing multi-system inflammation. CRP off the charts. I finally quit, and my grandmother threw a fit. Cursed me out, called me lazy, saying I'll drown in debt, etc. Come to find out YEARS later, she thought I forfeited time towards a pension. A pension. She still thought everyone worked x amount of years and qualified for a pension and had no idea what a 401K was. Needless to say, i found a job two weeks later, a lot less stress, and no signs of inflammation in lab work.
I mean it's grandma, what did you expect 😂. Millenials experienced that too with their grandparents. Welcome to the club.
@sbostic08 I am a millennial and knowing her all my life I didn't expect much. She's very reactionary. But being that she had jobs since retiring and receiving a pension, I expected she would at least be aware.

Same shit happen to me. I gained weight, health problems, and my older folks were like well that's life. I quit, they threw a fit. Best decision I made. I got my health back, found a less stressful job, and I realized the reason the older folks take it is personal is because they thought along the lines of your grandparent and that was that there are more benefits to staying at a place and being taken advantage of than leaving. I think some older people just think losing your health is normal. As a younger generation we can pit those companies and people who take advantage of others in check with the quiet quiting or leaving the jobs. It messed up the other generations and I think they have a form of stockhold syndrome if I think a lot about it. If anyone reads this and wondering should I quit a job that's affecting my health. Yes! Trust me that others may shame you but after I got my health back I was more productive and got better job.

as someone who is gen z, there is simply no hope for most of us to even have our own APARTMENT. let alone a house. retirement is a feverdream. Jobs dont pay enough and everything is way too expensive and were being thrown out into the world and are expected to be like "welp, just the way the world works ig" like NO. The odds are STACKED against us. SO... Why work? Why try? there is NO payoff anymore. Thats why we always distract ourselves with our phones. "Taking in life" only makes you feel at peace when your circumstances are GOOD. we have to cope somehow.
It always frustrates me when people say the “that’s how the world works” or “that’s just life” and I’m like it doesn’t HAVE to be that way, all of us together can try and stop this madness or being overworked and underpaid for shit that is too expensive. But then again society can’t agree on the simplest of things so that’s a pipe dream since society can’t agree on the simplest of things unfortunately, as a fellow Gen Z I wish you the best in this economically tyrannical society

Yessss!!! I’m 33 my little sister is 23!!!! I never thought we’d be so close but we are… we laugh at some of the differences between our generations but we can still relate to a lot of the same things. I love her very much and I’m so proud of her. In some ways she’s not like the stereotypical Gen Z person and I’m happy about that… she’s very sweet… humble… kind and hardworking.

@@marylandj3228 I'm sure someone more educated than me on the economics of the early 2000's can talk more about the similarities between the 2008 Financial Crisis devestating Millenials' financial futures and Covid devistating Gen Z, but I'm a millenial who graduated out of university right as the 2008 housing crisis was wrecking the world economy in very similar ways as COVID had done today. What I'm seeing Gen Z have to face right now is earily similar to what myself and many millenials went through. Hearing Gen Z talk of hopelessness, anger, fear, and struggling under crushing conditions echos the exact feelings millenials expressed and were mocked and blamed for just as Gen Z is now being mocked and blamed. I have so much empathy for what young people are going through, and I'm hear for solidarity in our struggles. We've got so much more in common than stupid Gen Z v Millenial culture wars pitting us against us, and I'm here to affirm that what Gen Z is experiencing isn't right and none of us should accept this status quo.

What I consider most shocking is that the job market does not appear to be made for the new generation (gen z, alpha, or anything that comes after). It requires years of experience just to get into low paid basic positions, it wants people with a high level of knowledge, it wants people that have already BEEN in the industry. It does not want new voices, it wants old ones. It wants those who have been in the sector for years, and will keep hiring those who have been in the sector for years. Even academia, something which many go into to escape the job market, do this. "SENIOR lecturer wanted", "researcher will EXPERIENCE wanted", "experienced GRADUATE wanted". I recently have even seen jobs be picky with WHERE someone obtained their degree! "Russel group university only".
This mentality they have is rough, it's as if they are ignoring where the population's age is largest and most of the workforce going forward.....like you want experience, go and accept elders who are willing to still work for you....(I've already seen a few comments here and there that they still don't hire them just cuz it costs more to pay for that experienced worker 😂) why even bother saving costs on employees, unless you can get a robot who can do our job in our place?

Unwillingness to train when it's literally the company's job to introduce people to the workspace, unwilling to pay for the workers they want most.
It’s been that way at least since the GFC. Basically the job market dried up and highly skilled people were forced to take entry level positions- and it never went back.
They don’t want to train people because they can’t guarantee they will have you around long enough to make the investment pay off - either you will jump ship or they will have a round of layoffs to make shareholders happy.
So you’re pretty much screwed.
As a 26 year old, being unemployed makes me feel embarrassed with myself, like I should have a clearer life path by now. But that's not the case at all.

As an older Gen Z, I understand. The way I got through it was communicating with my teachers personally. If there is one teacher that you can trust, find a way to contact to them. Maybe set a day or do this through email. I had great role models who did not take advantage of me. There was one teacher who disclosed they knew what it was like to have a mental illness. I cannot say that you have one because I don't know you but emailing them taught me how to write great emails for my future employers and professors. Please take advantage of your youth if you need guidance. It means that you are powerful and know responsibilities. Then, you can make it in the real world. I believe in you

Start building skills where you can be. Freelancer or a business owner so if you can't get a job you can supply your own income just in case
I’m turning 20 this year. I’m not ready for any of this. I prioritize life over work cause I see how it impacts people and how sucked in you can be and the workplace don’t can’t about you. I first worked at 15, till this day, I say don’t put your heart and soul into a job that doesn’t like you or care and neither do you. If my workplace is impacting my everyday in any way, I’m literally quitting

This was me when I was 21 - I COMPLETELY understand. I am 29 now and I am a full time artist. You WILL get there. But trust that it requires being a little lost for a bit. You're a baby in the real world. Imagine it like reseting your knowledge of how things work. But I promise it WILL come. Just keep going, and dont discount the experience college can give you - even if the super diploma is useless. It gave me direction when I didnt know where to go and let me meet people that helped push me forward. The world makes no sense most of the time, so WE have to forge the sense forward.

How did you manage to become a full time artist? I got a higher education diploma in animation (couldn't finish my third year due to my mental health going to shit during covid). I have the skill, but zero confidence in myself and no clue how to land my first art job (I don't want to do anything animation related anymore, but trying real hard to do my research on the illustration/book illustration market). Even illustration agencies often want someone who already has some experience and I don't know how to go about freelance or opening my own business... this is really depressing.
@baizhuwaitingroom7057 I did it in a very grass roots manner. I sold my stuff at local festivals, conventions, etc. Through this method of doing anything and everything you open yourself up to more people (vet them of course) but really it's about who you know. Got a local gaming meet up at a Bar and you're looking for a programming job? Go. Socialize. Connect. Networking just seems like a flimsy word but it's half the battle truly. Your work will speak for itself if you've honed it. And if not? Keep creating. Keep trying to collaborate. Keep reaching out to the creative circles you found yoirself in college. Where are those people now? Etc. It takes time. But consistent effort and you quite literally have to carve you own place into the world. (I.e. everytime I buy a table to sell at a convention that's thousands of ppl I show my stuff to)

I personally witnessed how a big company was hiring people for 2 roles, gone through 20+ people on interview and turned everyone down not because all of the candidates were bad, but because the company decided to shrink their maximum of employees (even though they are under staffed and current employees overwork) and it happened several times, it just amazes me for example how many people applied overall, how many got to an interview phase and none were accepted, it is just a clownery, I cannot imagine how many companies currently do the same.

I’m a 22 yr old Gen Z & even going to college to get a good paying career is hard. I became a medical assistant at 18 & I’m looking to go back to school to become a radiology tech. The only thing is that I would need to do my pre reqs & get put into a lottery system & hope I can get into the program. Whenever I hear older generations talk about college they make it seem like it was so easy. My own family members can’t believe that even if I pass my pre reqs I’m still not guaranteed a seat into the rad tech program. I just feel so exhausted trying to figure out a career since nothing is guaranteed & the only thing I’m guaranteed is to get into more student loan debt.

Gen Z and Millennials have so much in common. The older generations blame us for everything and call us lazy.
Truth is the older generations had more opportunities and a better overall economy. They were able to save money, buy properties, etc… just by working in their local grocery store, or factory.
Remember that sitcom Boy Meets World? The dad in the show worked at the grocery store (bagging groceries I think), and managed to buy a roomy two story house, have a stay at home wife, and support 3 children. Then he had a change of heart and quit his job and was able to open his own business. Different economy.

For someone who graduated from art school in 2020 its been real rough. Not only there was a whole pandemic, but the field of working in animation or games changed drastically. I spent years applying only to hear nothing back and feeling like a failure and with the rise of AI I was forced to go back to school and get a more "safe" degree. Its insane how old and worn down I feel from all the stress at just 23

I am 29, when my mom was 25ish, she was a nurse by day and dancer by night, she had a 3-bedroom townhome with 2 baths, and a large porch. She ONLY paid 500-600 USD. I literally still live home and struggle to keep gas in my car and find a job in my current studying field of applied sciences.

My mom’s a boomer. She grew up poor. She couldn’t afford to go to college and I think that’s helped her understand where I’m at better. Her home interest rate on her first mortgage was 18% and her husband had to work 3 jobs to help make the payments. No generation is a monolith because everyone’s lives are different. It was not rainbows and unicorns for every boomer either. We all need to have to more compassion and recognition of the downfalls of generational labels.

I think my generation was shielded from this and the consistent need to compare themselves to literally the entire world in their demographic.
There will always be people who are more poor than others, but there absolutely are generational differences and you can’t ignore that away. Cost of living, cost of housing, cost of education, age of retirement, everything has gotten worse post boomers. I don’t think it’s boomer’s fault (I think it’s the ultra wealthy and capitalism’s fault), but boomers objectively did have it easier even if some were still in poverty.
Both my parents are immigrants, grew up poor and had alcoholic fathers. You would THINK that would help them understand the struggles I am going through-OHHIHOHOHOHOHOHO! I WOULDN’T NEED THERAPY IF THAT WERE THE CASE!!!
My dad is a boomer as well and immigrant. He always thought his failures to get a job in Canada were because he was “overqualified” and that by us (my sister and I) going through the schooling system here, we’d fare better.
Nah, it’s all nepotism in mature industries. He had 20+ years of experience in his field but then a gap after doing a masters degree in Canada. Nobody would even interview him. You get punished severely for having lengthy resume gaps. Even small jobs like Security wouldn’t hire him until he begged and told them he has a family to support. It’s easier to get a job like that with 0 credentials than the wrong credentials. Almost everyone in his circle did manage to succeed and almost nobody even looks at or talks to him anymore because he’s the sole “failure”. He’s relieved that he’s past retirement age and nearly dead so he doesn’t have to explain how his life went to people who look down at him.

Thank you for making this video. I’m an older Gen Z (98’) that just entered the workforce this year. It’s been a bit of a rough adjustment being on my own financially without my parents, not having any friends close by in a new area, keeping myself afloat mentally and physically. Adulting is both exciting and challenging for sure. Your words of encouragement are much appreciated. I’m happy my Boomer parents are aware of the challenges us young people face today.
Oh yeah I had my mid life crisis in my 20s. I watched both of my best friends graduate with masters degrees while I was living alone working my ass off just to make ends meet. I didn't have any time for college because I was working two jobs. I look back now and realize I was doing the right thing for me and didn't need to compare myself to anyone but that is such a difficult time in life while friend groups grow in different ways. You're technically an adult in your 20's but so many of us are still figuring our paths out and learning hard life lessons. "Adulting" is a good word for it.
Yeah I’m going through it right now. I’m trying to figure out how to proceed after leaving my job mean while all my cousins are graduating with a degrees.
I’m 20 years old. I was born in 2003, and I’m gen Z. I grew up with extremely severe mental health issues, and even just graduating high school was a huge accomplishment for me, because I was in and out of the hospital for self harm/ personal safety related reasons. I missed school, I was lonely and had no friends, and the friends I did have didn’t treat me very well. I was traumatized during those years, I was autistic and I had ADHD the whole time, and I wasn’t diagnosed until 19 so I was disadvantaged always. Despite all of that, I held on, and worked my ass off for my mental health, I worked my ass off for my high school diploma, I pulled myself out of the darkest place in my life BECAUSE I was holding out hope, that becoming an adult would make everything better. My dad always told me high school would be one of the hardest times of my life, but that “it would all be worth it”. And I’m sad to say, that was mostly not true. Now I’m 20, and struggling to make ends meet, struggling in this economy, struggling to find work that is WORTH IT and not gonna burn me out, because regular shmegular jobs you could get with a high school diploma are NOT made to be workable for neurodivergent people. The work force is garbage, the economy is garbage, the country I live in is in late stage capitalism, and even though I work full time time I can still hardly afford to pay rent and buy groceries. Buying myself anything not absolutely necessary is not an option for me right now. I don’t make enough money to save, I don’t have a car because I can’t afford one. I can’t even afford my psychiatric medications anymore, so I have to survive and try to wing it without them. Is THIS what I was supposed to be looking forward to??

I’ve been in a similar boat for some time. I’m 22 and have always struggled with severe mental health issues that have made it hard to get through college at my trade school, hold down jobs and pay rent. It’s something I’m still struggling with, and honestly I would’ve been homeless a few times over the last five years without the help of my parents.
My biggest piece of advice is to try to build friendships that you can trust, and talk to people who understand- build up your support network. Find community. It’s easier said than done, but it helps. As for money, try to build up your resume, work for a few months at a shitty job and then try to leapfrog to something that pays a little better as your resume grows. It’s easier said than done, but it can be done. Also, try to ask your employer for disability accommodations if applicable. Some employers will be dicks about it but it’s worth a try. (And you do have a legal right to reasonable accommodation)
But just know you’re not alone. Solidarity ✊

That's just not for me, I'm AuDHD too so most jobs are a struggle for me and I hate the school system a lot. It's just not build for neurodivergent people, I learn better by myself or with online courses. I'm trying to make an agency/company or something like that online lol. That would work best for me, I think. Online services. I'm learning Marketing right now, and I'm enjoying it quite a lot.

Omg I understand so much. I had to drop out of HS and finish online because i unfortunately am struggling with mental health issues (i am not diagnosed with anything other than depression. Tis a very bad case) and i had jobs but could never keep them for longer than a year because it is a real burn out to be constantly checking myself to make sure im being normal and not some bag of black goo while i worked. So i would push myself over the edge until i breakdown and cant handle it, it is hard to catch a breath to ground yourself when you have work every single day, for 8-12 hours a day. Now im jobless bc like you said, theres not many jobs that are WORTH IT. Rent is $750-$1200 a month in my area, i would be barely making it either way. Im just lost and want to have a happy and full filling life, i dont want to be trapped behind a computer or counter for majority of my days. I watched my mom do it, and even she is upset after covid bc she works hard and thats all she has ever done. I guess that makes me entitled to want a job i am even semi okay with. $10.33/hr, paid bi-weekly, gotta work over time and holidays and weekends, basically be available to them at all times AND take on tasks that arent part of my daily job. Like yall have to pay me more if you want to run me like a mule 🙄🙄 people in offices doing nothing but a few tasks a day make more than someone breaking their bodies and mental for a job
I think a lot of Gen Z called "adulting" millennials cringe because they ALSO had been conditioned to see adult life as a certain way, and when Millennials couldn't do it the way GenX or Boomers could, they also thought of it as a "failure". It's not until they entered the adult stage of life that they learn how we were ALL set up to fail :(

I seriously ponder the point of it all, this life just feels to stressful and unrewarding to me. I also think there seriously needs to be a talk about mental health and the cost of surviving not just for the new adults in the world but for the ones who have been in it for a long time now. The cost of living and acquiring a degree is just absolutely absurd at this point, those educational establishments need to be held accountable for taking thousands of dollars from families every year just for a chance of a “better life”. Adults who are willing to work with and without degrees should not have to worry about financial struggles or acquiring necessities like food and a house. (And those with degrees shouldn’t have to worry about lifelong crippling debt, it’s ridiculous)
I finally understand why the friendly boomer guy who tried to comfort me while I was crying 10 years ago said, "I don't envy young people these days." Now it's come full circle... I do NOT envy Gen Z at all; they are going through too much. Like, they have the world on their shoulders and will be the ones to inherit the mess that's been left behind the most :(

I can’t relate to those who want to be tiktok influencers and such. It is depressing when you are thrown into the world after college and it isn’t what you were expecting.

I am going through that right now, so I understand. I always receive the same answers. "You're not qualified" "you're not what we're looking for" "not enough experience" "we're not hiring" I am so tired of this. How am I supposed to have experience if no one gives me the chance to gain it? It makes no sense. And I have no friends so no one can put me in a job :p

Same I graduated with a B.S. in finance. I don't want to be a social media influencer or anything. I generally enjoy finance/accounting and want a job in the field. But it's like every job expects you to have a college degree and 4 years of experience for an ‘entry’ level role

I'm a 25 y/o Gen Z with boomer parents. I work for a county agency and the only reason the wage is enough for me is because my parents pay my internet, car insurance, phone bill, gas, and electricity (that's my only utility). If I had to pay all that, I'd starve. Sometimes I do still struggle to live off of what I have left after putting away for savings, rent, and my student loans. I even have a Master's degree but am not being paid for it. Only a Bachelor's is required for this job. I'm single and only have a cat to take care of. I can't imagine trying to raise a family off of my income.
Wallahi I'm getting robbed. My asian parents force me to stay with them at the same time make me pay for house mortgage, water, gas, phone payments and everything that i waste on my own. They only pay car insurace (which isnt a lot cause I drive a paid off car and older cheap model) I wanna live with your parents man.

This is how I feel too. I have constant anxiety about making mistakes at work even though my coworkers like me and Ive only been here for 5 months. But i feel like every mistake is closer ro financial and housing insecurity. My Mom and younger brother are literally homeless in a shelter right now. I need to maintain this income to support myself and have the hope of buying a house for us in the future

The job market is insane right now. I’m 37. Worked in China for 11 years up to Covid. Moved back with my family to Australia in 2022. I’ve been looking and looking. I fire off application after application. It’s destroying my mental health. I feel unhireable.
I feel like I’m too old for entry level positions and too young for other positions, companies either wanna hire a young person they can groom into what they want or an older person with more experience than I have.

I really like your comment about still planning ahead and not giving up. I'm 33 now and I'm grateful I didn't gave up during my 20's while still questionning how the system work and not beeing okay with how things are. I see older folks white-knuckling it everyday, drinking and ignoring their real feelings until the end. Some literally get mad at you if you get a good night of sleep.. I wish older folks would question their existence a little more and have the self-awareness to see that their attitude towards younger people is rooted in resentment. "We struggled, so I want the same shitty fate for the young folks." That attitude is what keeps corporate America suffocating us. If you work a job you hate everyday with unfair compensation, don't expect everyone else to just go along with it because you were too chickenshit to say anything about it. Life is struggle sometimes. It sucks, but it is true. If Gen Z wants to break the cycle of abusive corporations, more power to them. They are not the first generation to try and break a negative cycle. Your parents and grandparents have had their own issues that they fought for--each generation before you had their mantle to take on. This is how we have made the progress that we have now. A youth group sees a problem and tries to change it... then they get tired and old. Next youth group takes on the next cause. Don't be upset at an older generation that has fought their battles and has little left to give.

Gen X here. I think that's a very unfair outlook on older generations. We all had to fight corporate greed and for employee rights. The thing is we didn't give up. We are still working while the younger generations are having emotional breakdowns and no showing. When they do show up to work they are on their phones, not doing their jobs, the work gets dumped on an older person, and they wait to be fired so they can get unemployment. It's really annoying. I can't support boomer parents, myself, and younger generations. It's too much on my generational shoulders.
I personally have been fighting capitalism and consumerism. Unequal pay and gender rights since my teens. Sexual harassment and no bathroom breaks was a huge issue. LGBTQ rights were non existant let alone piercings and tattoos. Lots of battles have been fought.
The main issue is that things have to change in the economic sector. Capitalism is not working. All generations are being affected. Look at all the seniors who lost their Social Security bracket when Obama changed how the work credits were calculated in the US. Some people lost 30 years. I lost 15 years and my new bracket is now the lowest tier.
My best advice. Stop spending money. Avoid credit card debt. Avoid huge student loans. Save money. Stop buying Temu, Shein, and cheap goods from China. Budget. Don't try and live like an Internet or social media influencer. Buy second hand, up cycle, be responsible for yourself, don't do drugs or party, and find a good support system with caring individuals. Remember to return favors and pay it forward, not to simply demand for yourself. I wish you well, it's a war out there, life is hard and unfair to all. ❤️🩹

I'm sorry to hear that. My only advice if you aren't doing this already is to try and narrow down what skills you could develop to fill a niche that has a high demand but low supply of people with that skill. If you have the time and resource, do some kind of volunteer work or use free resources online to upskill. It's tough out there though.

I'm 36, never married, never got to start a career, and ultimately fell into homelessness during the pandemic. I'm still homeless now, living in an old Toyota Sienna minivan, and trying to start a relationship with a drug addicted woman. I actually work and contribute to this broken society. This shit isn't fair. I wanted a home and a family.

What gets to me is being 23 in an office job for a healthcare agency. I barely make 30k and that’s not enough to live on but it’s the most I’ve ever made. I don’t have a union and have to try and educate my coworkers about worker rights without getting fired. My coworkers (all millennials) say that “well this is the best option out there so I can’t ask for better”.
I hate how we’ve been conditioned into refusing to ask for better under the guise that it makes one look “ungrateful” or “lazy”. No, I value and appreciate myself and I realize my employer never will unless I force them to.
Covid really messed me up. It took away that time for me and now I’m 23 and don’t know what the hell is going on.

And it will only get worse. As you age, you gain knowledge and wisdom of the things you didnt have knowledge of. As you age, you realize how the world is complete shit. The system is fraud. And nothing you do or say will create enough of a change. History repeats itself and the world is only going to get bleaker from here and more dystopian. More isolated. Harder to make friends now. It’s exhausting. Searching for jobs is like a job in itself, and all you are met with is rejection. Even the low entry jobs ask for years of experience and 3-4 references. To work half time in a grocery store I had to take a 200 question personality test (and was rejected two days after). It’s very lonely because it’s tiring and because everything is so expensive nowadays. I can’t afford anything but food so going out is not an option. Traveling is not an option. Moving out and inviting friends over is not an option. During winter it’s worse because there is not much to do or many places to go that don’t cost money

I graduated with my bachelors degree over a year ago. It was so tough navigating through the job market post graduation. Most of them require you to have experience. But like how am I supposed to gain experience if no one will hire me because I don’t have experience. Like make it make sense 😭😭 but by the grace of God this black woman believed in me and saw my ambition and I finally got a job. I’m doing okay for an entry level position.

Im in my 40s now but I remember being fresh out of college and feeling like this over 20 yrs ago. Growing up, you're told if you go to college, you'll get a good job. They dont tell you that you have to keep going to school to get a good paying career. Also, you may change your mind and do something that has nothing to do with your degree while swimming in student debt.
There's nothing like going away for college as a young adult but I feel like if I took up a trade or went to something like job corps, being an adult wouldn't seem so financially difficult.
There is a lot of gatekeeping in the trades. People keep trying to say they are the solution vs going to college but for every one opening in a skilled trade there’s a ton of applicants and a lot of the time if you don’t know someone in that trade or company you’re not going to get the job.

I have a degree in medical laboratory technology. I was working in hospital labs, cancer clinics, doctors offices, etc. And no one took me seriously because I was Gen Z. Even though I had a lot of experience from many different fields compared to Gen X working in one area for 20 years. And when I would fight for patients rights, I would get backlash from fellow colleagues. Not only that, I also have autism so the workforce just wasn’t built for someone like me. I am now unemployed with no direction in life and no idea how to navigate the world. I’m completely lost.
Being 25 sucked. Everything changes, nothing seems to work, the future is terrifying and uncertain and you just want to disappear.
I’m glad to be 30 now. I just wish them all the best and they can get through it and find their place. Especially in this shitty world.

Gen z is actually pretty divided and i do not see us coming together for a sense of community. Theres alot of individualism that puts rifts between us. We cant see eye to eye to come together

7:00 this is my number one piece of advice to my younger friends. at 28, i am on the genz/millenial cusp, so naturally i have friends on both sides of the aisle. millenials tend to do so much better when faced with true isolation and solitude. One of the best things i learned while bootstrapping my way out of homelessness (fucking sucked, should not have been as difficult as it was but i digress) is how to thrive in my own headspace without any external stimulation. I pride myself on never being bored and being able to be comfortable outside of the internet and on my own. it is a truly valuable skill that i highly encourage anybody who struggles with loneliness to learn. we came into this world alone and we are going to leave it alone. We must be at peace with ourselves. it's the most natural thing for us to be.

Millennial here and we felt this struggle too. So we hear you. I graduated in 2011 with two bachelors. I speak two languages. The job market was sh*t (post-great recession). College isn’t what it used to be when so many are degreed up. I worked in a gym making $8/hr part time because that’s the best I could get for a loooooong while (> 1 yr). It is so embarrassing and disillusioning. It gets better. 💜

100%! Wages were atrocious. Young adults today are making nearly double what we were making only 10 years ago (which I agree with, pay needs to be higher), but it's important to recognize how little we were paid for years after graduation when we needed more in order to afford food, rent, and student loan debt. I feel like a lot of the things mentioned in this video are things Millennials relate to because we lived this too. But we were alone. Hopefully now with two generations in the workforce feeling this way, change may actually begin to happen. Most Gen X don't agree with supporting the Millennial fight (at least the ones I know), but I think Millennials would gladly fight alongside Gen Z in this!

I’m a gen Z. I’m married with a kid, but ALL of my friends live at home. All of them. Because my husband and I make 85,000 a year and can barely afford rent, car, utilities, groceries, medical expenses, etc, etc. I graduated with my bachelors and am having to take more classes to get into the work training program I want to.. which is a year, full time, unpaid. I’m working towards it and have no idea how we will be able to afford it.
I'm also gen z and in a very similar position. Married, pregnant, living in the middle of nowhere to afford a small house. All my friends either live at home or are in their 6th-7th year of university. Husband and I both have a BA and a 2 year degree, and yet there is no work available outside of minimum wage, factory work/grocery store employee. Husband is trying to start his own business instead and it is becoming really hard to make ends meet waiting for it to pick up, especially with inflation going the way it is... I'm scared of what the future holds and how our baby will grow up, with the global economy and tensions being the way they are now
The fact that you married and have a team to work through life with (dual income) already gives you a huge leg up in the world. I wish more young people would see the importance of that. The whole notion that so many have that they are gonna do it all on their own...we'll see how far that goes....most of the people that say that have no idea how hard that is...and it just as hard decades ago too.

You know it tends to be a much harder life when you have a kid that depends on their parents to take care of them right? But not only that, a partner who will have to support and do the extra work because their other partner is working on themselves. It is significantly harder when you have to think about 2-3 other people vs when you’re by yourself. We have already seen how it goes and many in the situation you want them to value will tell you how much harder it is that they wish they waited till they were stable so they, and their children didn’t have to go through such a rough life. A life that many will never get out of. Whereas singles will often just say they wish they didn’t waste time on a career path that they weren’t actually interested in, or that provided a livable income.

I'm about to hit 22 this year and the no longer being the youth is really starting to hit me. It puts things into perspective and I've developed a lot of empathy for the older generations especially millennials.

I'm 38 now and look forward to 40 , but I take good care of myself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I won't let a number define me. I'm 24, and 22 is the youth! My therapist often has to remind me that I am still young!! Even though sometimes I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders and given my personal struggles, have been "adulting" from a very young age.. I am still young, and in my youth. It doesn't make any of the crap any easier, but I think it's a good reminder.

I just graduated, applied to 100’s of jobs entry level to medium level, and have heard either no response or only rejection. It’s so fucking frustrating. I have two business degrees (finance and information systems), I have been in many clubs and organizations, I had worked at banks and had multiple jobs at once, won awards, and NOTHING. Holy fuck. What do I need to do to even get an interview? Jump through a hoop of fire?

I’m part of the elder Gen Zer’s (26), and I just came out of my quarter life crisis not too long ago. I was definitely experiencing it between 22-25 and it was probably some of the most mentally challenging years of my life. Like I had just graduated college in the middle of a pandemic, finding work was incredibly hard even for minimum wage places, work I did find was unfulfilling and underpaid, there was one year I worked for an MLM (long story), and all the while having intense feelings of uselessness, doubt, lack of confidence, and depression. Oh and my dad died, so that’s great (since I know media literacy is dead, read that as not great). Thankfully now I can safely say I’m out of that crisis, I have a job that I love and pays okay, I was finally able to build up a solid group of friends, my finances feels far more stable now, I have my own car, my own place, and my own health insurance. There’s still a few moments of unease, like the monthly budget is a huge battle, but I don’t feel near as anxious or on edge as I have in the past.
I’m a zoomer, and im grateful I didn’t have to experience this first hand. I work construction and I got into the 5 trades when they were offering jobs to anyone who wanted to work. But I’ve seen some of my friends and even my brother have trouble finding work. Right now I work 40hrs and do some side work on the side, i can only imagine how hard it would be to enter the market now.
In regards to the loneliness epidemic, I don’t use my phone in public, because I think it’s rude. And I just have to say, the amount of amazing conversations I’ve had with elderly people in waiting rooms, stores, on walks, etc is so heart warming (and mind you, it’s only ever old people, young people do not want to talk).
As soon as I make a friend and they expect me to solely text them, I lose interest in the friendship. Face to face connection is the standard for me.
Face to face interaction or at least talking on the phone should be a standard. I'm an 85' millennial, I know what it's like to live without social media or a cellphone. I definitely appreciate genuine friendships and social interactions. Good luck on your life journey.

after dropping out of college i applied to probably 200 jobs online and then about 6 jobs in person, told my mom to reach out to all of her friends and ask if any of the places they worked were hiring, after about a month and a half ONE job reached back out and hired me… i’m making minimum wage full time and they just informed me today that in two weeks my hours are going to change and i’m going to have to stay about two hours later every night so i’m thinking of starting to look for new jobs but the whole process exhausts me. i feel like i can’t leave this job because i finally have stability but for the amount i work, the pay isn’t enough and i really don’t think i can work more hours even later. i sit in my car during my breaks sometimes and just feel kind of hopeless about the future because i don’t want to work in customer service forever, it burns me out
Have you considered the military? Stable job, good Healthcare, school benefits, a housing allowance etc... If you are in good shape with no mental health issues, it's something to consider. May not be what you had in mind, but it's great during periods of economic recession.

When I graduated in 2020, I was mid technical education. I had a job lined up and everything, but they turned around due to the pandemic and said they had to put precedence on the students still in school. (Automotive collision)
In the time since I graduated high school in 2020, I’ve gone from being able to afford an apartment, 2 cars, and car insurance with my husband to literally scraping just to pay the cars and insurance. I’m making the same amount, but everything else…. I can barely afford what I need to MAKE money, much less even consider making a change or ever having a kid. Off of 2 incomes!!! I’m living with family right now because we can’t afford ANYTHING. Like I said, we can barely pay our cars with the same amount we were living pretty off of and able to support not only our bare minimum.
And because minimum wage went up, jobs that used to pay a lot better than minimum haven’t gone up really at all. So the same job that used to be worth double the minimum is now only a couple dollars more
Finding the balance between pushing yourself and not slaving away for a company is quite difficult. Sometimes you'll be a bit too far one way or the other. I like the phrase "Take it easy, but take it!"
Damn 57% of Gen Z would be a content creator? That’s crazy to me. Nothing about being a content creator sounds appealing to me. Like even on a level of just information sharing, I couldn’t be bothered. There are so many things that took me forever to figure out and I want to let the streets know about this thing so they don’t suffer like I suffered. But actually doing the creating is literally such a miserable process. I’m so sorry but the streets are just gonna have to suffer like I suffered.

I feel like it's because multiple demographics see something they like. Of course creative types like creating, fans of content think "man I wish I could just do the renegade for money like the girls I watch" because that particular content isn't hard to make only hard to make popular, and disillusioned people think "that would make me a lot of money and I'd be unlikely to be fired. I could quit after a few years and still be ok". It checks a lot of boxes even if the work is terrible. I wouldn't be a good content creator, but I wish I could because I think the benefits would be worth it for me.
i agree with most of your points just not that gen z has phased out *yet*. gen z is roughly 28- the youngest still being in high school. this is quite literally the prime. for sure we will start to see it in a few years, but i think what we are facing now is what millennials did where everyone sort of just dogged on them (speaking as an older gen z who used to think i was millennial). if anything i feel like society is eager to sink their teeth into the new gen, gen alpha, through capitalism, consumerism, and general critique. which, fair, every gen has their fair critiques, but gen alpha is way too young. it's kind of alarming with how fast their gen is being hyper fixated on. gen z didn't get that until 2018-19 ish. and it wasn't until the pandemic when gen z was sort of the "peak" generation to talk about. but some gen z are still in high school. also certain things factor in like if they're the first in their family to go to college, get a corporate job, etc. lastly i want to mention that gen z HATE how the work force has become so robotic. literal robots read our resumes and can discard it before a human at HR does. it's very exhausting when you see 500+ applicants, never getting a callback/ ghosted, and applying for over 100 jobs. hope this makes sense! great video

hit the nail on the head with this, it really sucks that I still have to work a 2nd job (that’s minimum wage btw) just to live. I’m 23 and I really didn’t think this is where I would be in life right now.
I really like your conclusion. There is a huge lack of empathy and connection between generations. It seems like we've lost the ability to listen and have a real dialogue about what's going on. I can feel for Gen Z ( I’m a Millennial). But for the most part, Gen Z is experiencing the same as Millennials when it comes to pretty much fighting for limited resources( housing, top jobs, land, etc).
As a Millennial, I feel like Gen Z had more opportunities for work recruitment straight out of high school where they could avoid taking on college debt, where as Millennials were heavily pushed to go to 4yr universities and 2 yr associate programs were looked down upon. I feel like even though we know that money does not go as far as it used to, many Gen Z (Mills too) are living the “want” life without having it and that just makes the financial situation much more stressful.
I don’t think it’s fair that older generations own a ridiculously higher amount of land than younger generations as that’s where most of money and equity lies.
Gen Z also had more virtual opportunities than Millennials, however this also set them up for unrealistic expectations of becoming “influencers” and how much work it really takes going the entrepreneur route.
hi, gen z here. i agree with most of your points but disagree with the work recruitments out of highschool. a lot of gen z were fed essentially the same thing as millennials. esp those in the workforce now. i know social media the two gens like to talk about their differences a lot, but the reality is we are more similar than not. esp those of us who grew up first gen to go to college/ get a traditional corporate job. the american dream was still fed to us essentially until the pandemic hit. can't speak for younger gen z as many are still in HS but for the older ones yeah it's very similar to the millennial experience. also the digitalization of job applications have literally made things worse bc of scams, bots, and lack of human to human connection (a bot is reading my resume, not an actual human)
I feel that in terms of the amount of opportunities right out of school, it's still fairly small what they have to offer us in specific fields to gen Z, we'd still need to research and find it ourselves despite digital resources and new tech. Given that they pushed the higher education on us without really pushing us towards what actual real jobs are needed, we don't have the time or money to pay for training into the jobs that are actively seeking to train us. I personally prefer not to seek a job working with tools and other materials that could exacerbate my chronic skin condition in my hands, but in the corporate field at least, there's people of all ages gunning for the same limited positions. It's just as hard to get human connections into the right spaces we want to put ourselves in, especially with the rise of automation and ghosting rather than giving proper advice to us who got removed off the prospective hiring list.
@@chunkymonkey9097 I think for Gen Z there are a lot more ways to make money than for Millennials during the recession. For example, people can do Uber, Doordash deliveries, etc to make cash. We didn't have any of that. We had to hope for a job at a facility. That being said, life is much more expensive now than even then and technology has advanced to the point even restaurant jobs are replaced by AI.

My family is low-income and when i wanted to start working at Taco Bell part-time my mom was mostly concerned with it conflicting with homework or the sports I did because she wanted to make sure I could go to college. She let me be very independent except for this choice. Its good that I was also on board, if I had desired trade school or something more creative/hands-on then it would have been stifling instead of supportive.
Feels like gen z could be the bigger pool where content creators are made or they aim towards… when it comes to jobs… alot of their potential applicants will have some sort of social media profile that they will look into. Which could be a possibility as to why the gen z pool isnt getting hired????
Millennial here, I’m 34 years old and i feel most of this. Single parent and not being able to get a job is crazy. I feel like I have to get into debt ( student loans) to at least get something like a trade / cosmetology degree to have my own clientele and they won’t fire me
Please do this. I have always struggled to find jobs that will ne worth the stress even though my first job was at age 8. I've worked in multiple countries in a few different fields, and during the pandemic I wasted so much time with legit employers as well as scams. I gave up, looking as a job became too stressful - housing too. As a single parent the same age as you, I realized I need to prioritize stress minimization to maximize the quality of my kid's care. That includes designing my life around our wellbeing and my relationship with my kid. Got serious about my business that I cant scale due to health issues, but its slowly growing. Yes also getting into debt in a smart way to invest in myself and plan for the future. The planning part is crucial.. I am waiting on medical testing (for 4 years so far) before fully deciding and expecting to go back to school... but if whatever reason that doesnt happen, I am already living the backup plan
Yes that’s what I did and so far I can’t see myself going back to a regular job. It’s not a cake walk. You will need to be very organized but there’s no glass ceiling and I needed to get enough money to live. These other jobs aren’t paying people enough to live.

They said a stem degree from a good college was enough but that’s a lie now. You need 2-3 internships, undergrad research and an association to one or two clubs to get a proper interview at decent companies now. Things have changed and we need to adapt
