  • Check out Ilene Cooper's An Angel in My Pocket: dft.ba/-TCa or if you prefer easy readers, Lucy on the Loose! dft.ba/-TCd Or if you prefer picture books, The Golden Rule! dft.ba/-TCf
    They're all great, and I'm not just saying that because Ilene Cooper made my whole life possible.
    In which John talks about the crushing monotony and paralyzing terror of one's first years entering the post-school world of grown-ups, and how getting a mentor, like the one John found in the author Ilene Cooper, can get you through.

    9 years ago, I was 22, unemployed, very broke, and completely paralyzed by terror. This video made me feel much less alone. Today, my baby puked on my face. After cleaning us both up, I thought, "John Green was right. This is definitely better than any day in my early twenties." Adulthood really does get a lot better.

      25, recently graduated and unemployed. Attending a few interviews but law is conpetitive and now in a recession. Quite scared as I hated my first job and currently woke up from a nightmare and found this video! I agree with the terror and monotony it feels very lonely and I feel inadequate. Nice to think it isn't just a me issue.

    This very accurately describes the experience I had during my first two years out of college. The part you left out is how fantastic it feels when you first realize you are accomplishing all of these things regularly on your own. Don't get me wrong. There's still the crushing fear that you will soon fail and lose all of this, but you're doing it for now. That's such an exciting thing.

      At some phases of life yes, but sometimes challenging coworkers and difficult situations teach you more about yourself and mature you in interacting with diversity. Not everyone is like you, nor will you click with everyone. Everyone has their own walk in life etc
      I certainly wouldn’t encourage you to seek out problems or stay long term in a poor career choice but them happening does bring some longer term value.

    How to become an adult:
    1. You never truly become an "adult," or how Americans define it. You are more or less molded by society and the people you interact with on a daily basis.
    2. Find a job that'll keep you stable, an then go onto what you want to do (basically what John said).
    3. This isn't really a "how to become an adult" video, this is more of a "how to survive modern society" video, which is more or less the same thing.
    And 4. Thank you for making this video regardless. It helped me figure out a few things I was having problems with (I'm in college).

I know how to apply for a job, pay taxes, file taxes, FAFSA, bank account, but I wanna learn to be responsible. I want to be able to live my life on my own and not depend on my parents. I just need to get mentally well and stable. If I can get well, I will feel better.

    I like the small moments like that when I can appreciate your humor (and good looks). You're clearly an interesting person on every level, especially intellectually (engaging thought-provoking) and emotionally (clever, humorous, empathetic).
    (Not hitting on you. I'm happily engaged. You have traits I admire in a friend or mentor and hope to continue to develop throughout my lifetime)

      I finding disappointing that even today people have to specify that they are not hitting on someone. It's as if you can only compliment someone you are romantically interested in. That is such a disappointing aspect of humanity.

    • @peter_castle
      @peter_castle 9 років тому +1

      annabelle mayes I don't understand what you said. When a person complments other person, he has to say on what is complimenting him. For example you could compliment this guy for being good talking, or for having smart arguments, or for having good video edition.

    • @annabellemayes4843
      @annabellemayes4843 9 років тому +1

      +Peter Castle I just mean that at my school I'm in band and whenever I compliment a guy on what he is playing everyone assumes that I like him and pick on me. it feels like I can't be nice to people without them thinking I like that person

    • @peter_castle
      @peter_castle 9 років тому +1

      I understand your frustration. I don't know if you realized but normally when girls flirt with guys, they don't say things like "i'm atracted to you" or "i want you to be my boyfriend". They are much more sutile. They pay attention to the guy and make them feel special. That confuses the guys sometimes and they don't know if the girls are flirting or complimenting.
      Althought of course, sometimes what you are saying happens. But just in case, guys hit on you.
      If you think they hit on you, just denied them and not more problems.

  • @Daph909

    For some reason I really enjoy adulthood. I graduated from university about a year ago, since then I've gotten a job, saved money and started travelling. I'm currently in Australia and during the past 4 months of travelling I've figured out what kind of jobs I'd like to do the rest of my life:) Nothing's set in stone, but at least I have some ideas and that's very comforting. Thanks for the tip btw, I'm looking forward to meeting someone who's doing my dream job so I can ask them for advice and tips and stuff=) I want to be a(production designer - if anyone knows someone, give me a shout!) DFTBA!

    • @RyanStorey1231
      @RyanStorey1231 10 років тому

      I would love to do that in the future. Save money after school and spend a couple of years traveling. Tell me, how did you do it? How did you save money for that? It's something I've thought about doing as well, but it always seemed like a naive thing to think about. Plus there's money and employment to think about. Can you tell me how you did it?

    • @Daph909
      @Daph909 10 років тому

      Haha yes! I honestly got very lucky, because my parents didn't mind me moving back in with them for over a year(A) This way I barely had to pay for anything while working a full-time job, so I could save heaps. I also saved money during university, working several jobs, and yes, I do have student loans to pay off, but I'll worry about that later:$ My plan was to travel about a year, but I found a job (minimum wage though) in New Zealand and I'll be staying here for a couple more months:) Just try and live a low-budget lifestyle as well, it's totally worth it! I mean, make your travels your priority when making decisions; do you really need that cup of starbucks coffee or can you just whip something up at home?;) Every little bit helps:) Also, that job I had whilst living with my parents again, I absolutely hated it (long hours/minimum wage), but I just kept thinking of Australia & New Zealand and how it would totally be worth it at some point - which it truly is! That's just the money/employment part.. The hardest thing for me was saying goodbye to my family and friends and actually board that plane. I kept thinking about a line in Paper Towns: “It is so hard to leave-until you leave. And then it is the easiest goddamned thing in the world.” Which is totally true:) At first I had no idea what I was doing, but it's a risk you have to take I guess.. It's scary, but you know what they say: Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone;) I hope you get to travel some day! It's the best experience of my life and I wish everyone could have a similar experience:D Good luck!=)

    • @RyanStorey1231
      @RyanStorey1231 10 років тому +1

      About how much did you save? And thank you for answering. I was legitimately curious. I'll keep that in mind. I don't know WHEN I will have a chance to do it, but I will. Right now, I just graduated high school and I'm about to start college (a technical, two-year school, but I plan to transfer to University after). I'm waiting until I settle into school before I find a job and I still live with my grandparents (my guardians).
      It's scary to me because I feel like I'm being thrust out into this adult world with no preparations. Even if I did get a chance to travel, I don't know how well equipped I would be to handle it. I was very sheltered as a child, and it's starting to bite me in the rear. I don't know what I even want to do as far as career goals or college majors, but I know that I want to breakaway from my family eventually, but sadly I'm not in that position yet where I'm able to do so.
      My hope is that after transferring to University in two years, I will have sustained a good enough income where I can live on my own in either in an apartment or college dorm, and work my way there. I don't even know where I want to travel exactly, but it's thrilling to think about, but terrifying as well. I must sound totally childish and naive, but I agree with you: if ever given the opportunity to travel, one should take it!
      Sorry for the novel. I'm just venting some of my insecurities to some kind stranger on the interwebs.. You know, the usual. :)

    • @Daph909
      @Daph909 10 років тому

      Hello!
      Sorry for the late reply:) I had about 6000 euros in savings when I got on that first plane, so I'd already spent about 4500 on plane tickets, visas, bus tickets, vaccinations & basic travel gear.. It's definitely expensive (all my savings have magically disappeared in about 6 months, so that's kind of saddening) but like I said before, it's totally worth it! Also, I currently have a job, so I'm saving once again;)
      I know the feeling, I never knew for sure when I was gonna go, but at some point I made it more of a goal than a dream, I just realised that after uni I wanted to save money as fast as I could, and then leave:) That sounds like a good idea though, getting used to a new school and settling into a new life style takes its time. the job'll come later:)
      Trust me, you don't sound childish and naive to me, I've always felt the same way..;) Of course it's all very scary, but that's the good thing of having a dream so big & expensive; you can grow into it;) The closer you get, the more prepared & 'ready' you'll feel - although I still felt unprepared, but I guess that's normal.. I had already lived without my family (even abroad), but nothing can truly prepare you for this travel-lifestyle. You'll learn as you go;) As far as career goals go, I'm still pretty clueless myself.. I've decided to just trust my instincts (something I learned while travelling) and just do whatever I think will make me happy. If I find that I'm not happy, I'll keep looking;)
      Haha using the interwebs to vent to strangers is one of the reasons I love this place so much:') Good luck with all your plans:D You'll find a place to travel to, the world is filled with fantastic locations:D If you ever want to talk more, you know where to find me:) Also, I make videos about my travels, they're all up on my channel, so if you want to get some inspiration^^ I'm sure it'll all work out for you:) Maybe not in the way you'd originally planned it, but you'll get there one way or another:D (that's something I learned as well, life always works itself out & dreams really can come true:P) I sounds like such a cheeseball, but I really do mean everything I say:) )

    John, I think you already are, like, a third of an Ilene for a lot of people. As an aspiring writer, I am motivated by seeing you and the life you have now, as well as just plain being inspired to embrace being intelligent and to love knowledge by your enthusiasm for these things. Obviously I need to find someone that I can have, like, real, face to face conversations with, and who can know me as a person, not just a comment, but knowing that you're there, caring, is almost enough. Thank you.

    I believe it's TOTALLY possible to make something special of your life. Crushing monotony doesn't need happen if you're willing to set the time aside to make something special of yourself. Style is the key. Take time to develope what you do, in time you'll get your chance. Without this the best you can hope for is whatever the world around you will give while taking most of your work /pay away. Talent is a beginning, take what you love and hone it into something special. this is your best chance

    This is some advice I have found to be incredibly helpful, be your own Ilene. As odd as this sounds, the more you rely upon yourself the more experience you gain with something. For example I taught myself how to rock climb and mountain bike. It was very scary and painful at times but when I accomplished something on my own with no one else to help me it was very fulfilling and all of the mistakes you make along the way help to add to your knowledge in a unique way that nothing else can duplica

    The thing about your life is that you evolve. Your passions and your mind; they evolve. You're not hopelessly lost ... you're evolving. College was by far the best and most rewarding experience of my so far brief existence. I changed ..my passions grew...I grew ... I discovered new meanings to my life. I redefined success to be less superficial and more about my happiness. My low days were only pieces to a puzzle that made my life more complete. One day you'll understand what I mean :)
