- The Legion 9i, Lenovo’s new high end 16.3” Legion gaming laptop adds all the high end features you might have previously pined for in this family of high performance, fairly priced portable gaming and content creation mobile PCs. The Legion 9i has a 16.3” 3.2K mini LED display with G-Sync, an Intel Core i9-13980HK, NVIDIA RTX 4080 / RTX 4090, a hybrid vapor chamber and water cooled design, metal chassis and RGB everywhere. Thunderbolt 4, a 1080p webcam, full size SD card slot and a forged carbon fiber lid are standard, as are both a compact 330 watt charger and 140 watt USB-C travel charger. It competes directly with the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 and indirectly with larger high performance laptops like the Alienware m18.

In case anyone is curious this laptop is roughly within 5% performance of my Desktop 3080Ti with 12700k cpu. These high end laptops are more of less last gen desktops but are portable. Personally find that very impressive.
One correction, you can turn on all of the rear label lights by pressing Fn + U. The light in the middle is for the water pump and turns on only when the pump is running.
Looks like a really sweet machine! I have a feeling I'd go with the Lenovo legion 7 pro instead, as this would probably be a bit of overkill, but getting that mini-led would be really nice! And the cooling sounds like it works really well.

Just got my 9i a few days ago and am loving it. Performance is top tier, the keyboard is fantastic and the screen is absolutely stunning. Highly recommend it if you have the cash.
how is the brightness and color accuracy in HDR?
Overheard some complaints about keyboard getting unbearably hot, what is your experience with it, especially while gaming for 5+ hours?
@@AldilusI bought the 9i. The keyboard gets warm, but it’s really not bad enough to complain. The track pad is bit smaller than the 7i (Lisa is not kidding about this), but it’s made of glass and feels a bit more premium. Not a big deal as I use a mouse. Oh…the keyboard is shifted down…that’s very different.
Hey lisa, nice review. If possible please try the acer predator triton 17x as well, it has a mini led and premium build at 17inches

Hey Lisa, all of the lights on the back (to indicate the different ports) do light up. You have to toggle FN + U to do so

Lenovo still on a radar, they products are really solid, unique and amazing. This one are not exception!
I want to go all in on an upgrade. But dang these prices are up there. I’ve had my 2017 MacBook Pro running great until here in the last couple of years where the wifi just randomly stops working. Even the engineer people couldn’t fix it. I’m thinking it’s the card because it’s a common issue they won’t admit to until there’s a lawsuit. But I want to get a true gaming laptop. The battery life and the price hold me back.

The liquid cooling in this one is a total gimmick when explored more. Just small part of the loops barely making contact with heatpipes. Anyhow, besides that, this seems like such a great laptop.
It does come at a substantial price increase, although as Lisa notes, it's still a competitive price.
The question becomes if the new features are worth the premium. Both the Legion 7i and 9i are often on sale and hopefully they will have a big sale around Black Friday.
Does Lenovo usually give good discounts on Legions around Black Friday? I'm trying to decide if I should grab one now (or when a good cashback comes up) or wait till Black Friday.
@@VikVaughan Not sure. Some of the higher end laptops don't always go on sale, but every year it's a mixed bag, so your luck of the draw may vary. I'd see if they have price protection.

Great review. Yes, I agree with the comments on the pricing. ASUS and Razer are about the same or even more expensive on their high-end laptops, but that doesn't make them affordable these days anyway. The liquid cooling sounds like a marketing gimmick to me, but the top finish looks nice.
I have one, all the liquid cooling does it delay it reaching high temps but once it hits there it helps a tiny bit but not much. I don't think it cools the VRAM either, but the laptop is phenomenal overall. Would buy again
Why have the water cooling kick in so late or not letting it run all the time? Would be way better for longevity and in general. Don't really understand what they were thinking.

Great review as always. How does the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 compare to this? Do the HX processor and vapor chamber cooling make a huge difference?
Game fps aren't as high on the M16 but AAA games are still very playable (watch our review if you haven't yet). The M16 is a bit less powerful given the lower wattage GPU and non-overclockable Core i9. Those are concessions to portability (it's a half pound lighter than the Legion 9i) and price. I own an M16 and it's a great machine as a balance of performance, portability and chill good looks. The Legion competes more directly with the Asus Strix Scar 16 that has similar specs to the 9i. The M16's thermals are certainly competitive with the 9i in terms of core temps and noise levels.
Great review! But man. I thought Lenovo was about packing a punch without bragging about it design-wise. At my age. I can comfortably take my '21 Legion 7 to friends and family without them jokingly asking If i'm having a digital midlife-crisis. This 9i will answer the question for me. even with all the RGB off..
I feel like if they merged the legion pro 7 with the 9 it would be the perfect laptop. There are things missing from the 7 pro like the fact that the case is plastic instead of metal, the track pad and keyboard from the 7 pro. the ram in the same place as the 7 so it's east to upgrade etc It would have made more sense to have the 7 pro as the flagship add the best of both in terms of the physical aspects of the laptop and just have the specs be scalable along with the price. I picked up a legion pro 7i intel 13900hx, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd and the nvidia rtx 4080 16gb and it is a fantastic computer it's been able to handle everything I've been able to throw at it from running games like red dead redemption 2 with all the settings maxed out at a solid 95fps, Doom external with all settings maxed at a solid 240 fps and all other games have been easily around the 120fps all at full resolution. Additionally I use it for music production running Ableton live with tons of plugins and it's given me no issues what so ever, it's just a shame that the 7 pro doesn't have some of the bells and whistles of the 9. I paid $2500 for it about a month ago, I didn't see any reasonable reason to pay $1000-1500 more for the arguably minimal upgrades, I would have been happy to pay something in between to get the nicer case etc. either way I am very happy with it, it is by far the most powerful computer I've ever owned and being in a laptop form factor is extremely impressive.

I saw another review where they disconnected the water pump. It doesn't make any difference to temperatures, so it doesn't matter if it fails. All it does is contribute a little to the noise, power draw, and price.
Yeah, without a giant radiator and fan attached to it, it's just a glorified heat pipe.
Actually i don't like small track pads, the laptop track pads should be large and easy to use

Even the Base Model legions appear loud and cheap simply because there is a large LEGION logo plastered on the front cover. This 4k edition despite great spec's looks just as crappy with the granite countertop case. For 4K just get an Alienware or Razer. Something that at least looks good and built well.

From what I'm seeing, the 4080 Legion 7i pro is outperforming the 9i in both framerates and thermals.
Liquid cooling that doesn't do anything . Pushed the keyboard down and made the 4trackpad tiny. Why Lenovo!

Interesting. Ours doesn't and I looked at the lighting settings to see if I needed to enable it (didn't find a setting for the port indicators though, just the back light bar).

This is way too heavy for my poor back. You don’t need this if you already own a desktop. It’s literally a desktop replacement.

I just priced the Legion 9i for $3345 with multiple stacked discounts - upgrades included 4090, 64GB DDR5, and Windows 11 Pro. Is it worth it? Should I pull the wallet trigger?
