Even the most compact of itx builds doesnt compete with the utility provided here. I ordered one solely because of how often I travel and how convenient it would be. Seems much better than my current thinkpad!

I was able to get the Legion 9i Gen 8 priced out with Windows 11 Pro, the 4090, and 64GB of DDR5 at $3345 with multiple discounts. Damn! And the display is insane and the reason why I chose the 9i over the 7i. The 7i doesn't have an option for the miniLED display. So tempted to pull the trigger on this beast! I already have the Asus Scar 16 with 4080 and only 32GB DDR5, but it has the 2560 x 1600 miniLED HDR1000 display @ 240Hz. It's a great gaming laptop and I only paid $2800 for it, so may give it to my son if I get the 9i. Decisions decisions!

Indeed, the type of work I do benefits from having as many CUDA cores as possible for parallelism, rather than higher clock speed.
I have a separate Legion 7i Pro 4080 laptop which can run its GPU at max wattage, but it’s a significantly thicker and heavier machine.

    • @sflxn
      @sflxn Рік тому

TGP of 80w was why I stopped looking at the P1. I bet an asus g14 will run rings around the p1.

    • @little_fluffy_clouds
      @little_fluffy_clouds Рік тому

@@sflxn naturally, this is highly subjective, but for me, it really didn’t. I’ve sold my ASUS to upgrade to the P1. There’s much more to a laptop than its list of specs. ASUS had a worse keyboard, trackpad,
screen and customer support, but it was also cheaper, so not a like for like comparison. I just wanted a bigger screen without adding too much weight.
For me, P1 is the best thin and light mobile workstation out there if you want the ultimate mix of quality and portability, not if you just want highest possible performance. Lenovo’s Legion series are a better fit purely for performance, as long as you don’t mind something thicker and heavier (so you’re trading off portability for performance).
The Legion is a gaming-first machine with balls-out performance where you can also run productivity apps. The P1 is a mobile workstation where ergonomics, reliability and comfort comes first, so it has conservative tuning to tame fan noise and chassis temps. It can also happen to run games rather well on the side, but it’s not its primary purpose in life.
To say the P1 is useless because it doesn’t run its GPU at a zillion watts is like saying a Rolls-Royce is useless because it can’t go at 200 mph. It was never designed to do that. It’s designed for users with different priorities and different preferences.
I’m not hating on ASUS by the way, G14 was a really nice machine for the price and I have an ASUS X670E Extreme motherboard in my desktop PC with an ASUS Harpe mouse. It’s good to have options from different brands. It’s just that when it comes to Windows/Linux laptops, I prefer ThinkPads over anything else and I’m excited to finally have a thin and light ThinkPad which can run anything I throw at it at a good level of performance without sounding like a jet engine. The battery life still sucks, but that’s inevitable with any Intel laptop with comparable specs.

Plus I went for the 4080 because of the 12gb vram so in later years I still have some buffer. Plus that miniled screen is great and so bright. Def notice the haloing on dark backgrounds when the screen is in multi zone config but it's an easy fix by changing to single zone. The laptop is fast and very well built. @@TheRedc0met I am aware of the differences, since I own two Legions (7i and 14 Slim OLED, and I will sell the 7i to get a 9i as soon as they start using the latest gen processors) and two MacBooks currently (14" Pro and 13" Air M2). I also have a ThinkPad P1 gen6, which is Lenovo's top-of-the-range 16" mobile workstation laptop. I've been collecting ThinkPads since IBM introduced them in 1990 and still have a vintage 760XL in perfect working condition.
Apple Silicon Macs also have discrete GPUs, just not made by NVIDIA, Intel or AMD, it's Apple's own design. It's perfectly capable of running any game or productivity task, as well as ray-tracing in the recent models. There's just not enough support from big name gaming developers for making/porting AAA games for the Mac.
For AI and ML work, MBP is actually a good choice since the GPU has access to all of the memory in the machine at full speed, whereas the 4090 is limited to 24 GB of VRAM.
Magnesium vs. aluminium isn't that important for me since the build quality in a MacBook is immaculate, it's not like aircraft-grade aluminium isn't a premium material for laptop chassis.
Each has strengths and weaknesses. If you just want to play the latest PC games, Legion is the better choice. For everything else, as a general purpose portable workhorse, MacBook Air or Pro are hard to beat.

As a current Legion 7 2021 user, this Legion 9 seems to be stepping in an interesting direction for the flagship Legion lineup, but not quite there yet.
While I appreciate the effort making the top lid unique, it needs to be cleaner. This design is not edgy enough to compete with MSI, or classy enough to compete with the Blade, and the Legion audience tends to prefer a more lowkey look. Maybe this design can be reserved for special editions.
Port placement also seems weird, both the sides and even the back, like they're not evenly spaced out, which is definitely an eye sore for OCD people like me.
The internal water-cooling system looks cool, but I have doubts when this is put into long term usage. Lenovo could even consider implementing an additional removable cooler like those XMGs.
Soldered RAMs is another turn-off for me. Removability of parts has always been part of Lenovo laptops, maybe this a temporary solution for that internal cooling, but hopefully they'll figure out another way without soldering the RAMs in later versions.
Perhaps when RTX5000 series arrive, I'll jump on one of these Legion 9s if they've made these improvements.

Who in their right mind would use this as a “productivity tool” on the go, these devices are designed to be used with a mouse, if you absolutely had to quickly click something add a touch screen. I’ve never used a touchpad with a laptop over the years, unless you’re literally in a basement or crawlspace installing network gear or servers (and if u do that on the regular u can use a none gaming laptop for this). Having the full chassis for the keyboard makes so much more sense, both how it looks and comfort level. Whenever i have to opt for a laptop as my daily driver i have it in a stand with a dock plugged in for my peripherals so its not an awkward af typing experience.

Different people value different things. As a former legion 7i and now a razer blade 16 owner I can assure you both brands are great in their own way, but focus on different things. You normally don't buy razer if you want absolute best performance or the best price. You do it if you value a certain look.
Lenovo on the other hand offers a much better cooling solution and normally a better price to perfomance value (questionable with current legion 9 prices though...)

Not gonna lie I think the amount a RAM that is being pushed out is getting a tad absurd. 64GB for "gaming" really? Let alone 32GB is ridiculous. The only thing I can think of is because of Windows OS, its a frickin memory hog like no other. Oh but I do a lot of Premier Pro, etc, etc, I need the memory is BS. Maybe you need it for having 100 Chrome tabs, streaming, and having 3 or 4 games open at once? That amount of RAM is still overkill for 95% of people. I've been in IT/app development for 12+ years, I've seen all kinds of workflows that will eat up 32GB of memory, but gaming and typical UA-cam video editing/processing....no.

I have the P1 gen6 with a 4090 and it’s the perfect form factor and lightweight, but it means it has to power limit the GPU and the fans get noisy even in quiet mode. The 9i is bigger and heavier but has the room for quietly cooling those components without power limiting them too severely. Highly recommended if price is no issue (then again, the P1 was $6K, so the 9i is a bargain in comparison)

I recently bought the ASUS ROG Strix G18 G814JIR-N6003W 18" gaming laptop (Grey | i9-14900HX | RTX 4070 | 32 GB DDR5 5600 MHZ | 2 TB SSD) for 2000€ less and getting almost the same results. Not worth the money dude. But the 4070 only has 8GB... Yes, for a laptop this is more than enough. I played Battlefield 2042 multiplayer yesterday in ultra settings with ray tracing and dlss on at a 2560x1440 resolution and I got an astonishing 130 FPS. No delays like lag or bad latency at all, while I still had other programs open in the background such as MSI Afterburner, Armor crate, and UA-cam.. Legion 9i is pure overkill and way too expensive.

So they brought back the real 7i Pro update in the form of an 9i Pro and charged us $1,000+ more for it.

I’m wanting to by this as my gaming setup driver and daily laptop. I’ve spent years with a MacBook Pro and then my own PC build, but after seeing the performance and features… I feel like I can toss my MacBook and pc and get this with a thunderbolt 4 dock. Should still handle my 3 monitors and gaming/capturing from my console without a hiccup. I love my Mac and my pc but this laptop is just too damn cool

Sound damping would be contradictory to everything a superlight, thin, and powerful laptop is about. They add thickness and would retain heat like crazy.

As a current legion user (Legion 5, RTX 3060, Ryzen 7 5800H), I'm loving what they're doing with the 9i. When I do decide to upgrade it will most likely be another legion model, however, by that time the RTX 5000 series may be out and the legion 9i at that time will be even more impressive. Just like other legion models, that 9i is gonna sell really well.
That 9i checks all the boxes for me.
    ✅Excellent Screen
✅Good enough battery life for what it is 😬
    ✅Excellent performance
✅Wicked cooling (+ low noise levels)
    ✅Solid build quality
✅Amazing keyboard (I'm taking your word for it)
    ✅Lighting for I/O ports
✅Huge selection of I/O at the back
✅Solid software (I currently have no issues with Lenovo Vantage so hopefully they iron out those issues before launch)
My only gripe is the SODIMM slots being inaccessible, but like you said, if you option it with 64GBs and the 4090 config, there isn't really a need for more, unless they pair it with lower quality memory. My legion came with 16gb X16 memory and I upgraded it to 32GB X8 memory, then again that is DDR4 so correct me if DDR5 doesn't have these options.

i got the 7i pro 13900h, 4090 for $2400. the 9i pro is $2000 more for twice the ram size and mini led display. as cool as these sound, they are not worth $2000 especially performance should be within 5%

@DR19X I completely agree with you. I don't think with those few additions the price should be that much more than a similarly specced 7i pro.

keyboard service to the keyboard enthusiast, would go miles towards REALLY standing out as a laptop (i.e. qmk, switches and/or keycaps). I think the ultimate win will come when we start seeing ortholinear layouts on native keyboards. (GOD THE EXCITEMENT)

Bought slim 7 2023 and within one month got a black screen issue. Needed to take it apart about 4 times to fix it. My 7 year old hp pavillion with i5-7200u never failed to turn on. Legion laptops look good but can't say reliable.

Dave2D did an awesome video on this video especially for the water cooling.
Here's the video title "When a Laptop Tries TOO Hard"
    Partial rough transcript
"But then, I realized I can physically disable the liquid cooling. I can unplug that pump, and it will no longer circulate the liquid around. So now, I should be able to test to see if it's actually doing anything. I unplugged it, and the laptop performed almost the exact same way. The only difference that I could spot is..." Go watch the video 😂

Sadly I have never seen a high spec laptop get any closer than 60% of a similar desktop build. Hopefully this water cooling trend advances….therefore more wattage

if they want to compete with other brands like razer and alienware, the price should be more reasonable than the rest of the brands while maintaining all important ports/functions on a laptop and ofc, quality

The next version just needs the 240Hz Oled screen that razer has, and a haptic trackpad....maybe slide the keyboard up half an inch too. It's sooooo close to being perfect.
