@@memphistim2001 That's the way I see it too. I think the songwriter suggested that it was about the Spanish-American War, but what he describes sounds more like the Mexican Revolution. Maybe he just got his history a little mixed up. And yes, Villa led the army of the north, Zapata the army of the south of Mexico. The Villistas made at least two raids into the US, one in New Mexico at the town of Columbus, and another into Texas, where they "crossed the Rio Grande." I have visited Columbus, where there is a Pancho Villa Museum. I walked across the border to Palomas, Chihuahua for lunch. It's an interesting area. Taken from "@hectorsandoval4041 8 years ago" This song talks about a war between Mexico and USA. The battle was called "Batalla de la Angostura" on 1847. The troops used to play trumpets and drums when they were going to fight, Fernando is a name in Spanish, It means the song talks about 2 Mexican soldiers that had to cross the Rio Grande to fight for "Freedom in this Land". The American troops of the general Zachary Taylor were in Saltillo, Mexico and Mexico had not enough soldiers, the Mexican government called young people to fight, and the song says "we were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die". It's a beautiful song that tells us about American and Mexican history.

Nice reaction man to one of their best songs, i have loved this song since my teens, thirty odd years. Another great Abba song is called SOS. They performed a great live version of the song on a UK TV show called "Seaside Special", look it up Jay. It's great. ✌️ Peace out.
I am lucky to have lived long enough to have heard a lot of these songs first time around. I just love living that experience again through your reactions.
Curiously enough, Fernando was originally performed and recorded by the lady who sang lead vocals in this version you saw here but as a solo artist and in Swedish, not in English. Her name is Anni-Frid Lyngstad, better known as Frida, btw. Also, the lyrical content is different from the ABBA version in English. The Swedish version presents someone cheering up a friend who is reminiscing about a lost love while the English version presents Fernando, who is someone who fought during the Mexican-American war and he is reminiscing about those days when he was a freedom frighter. BTW, he did not die. He did live long enough to grow old and gray. Also, if you loved Frida's voice, you should react to other ABBA songs where she sings lead vocals such as When All Is Said and Done, One Man One Woman, Andante Andante, Money Money Money, Should I Laugh or Cry, Our Last Summer, I Wonder (Departure), I Have a Dream, just to name a few. She has recorded a few solo albums and she has an interesting discography. It is musically diverse. You should also check out her solo discography.

I remember, and hearing this I'm always reminded when this song hit the charts 45 years ago: co-worker of mine travelled with his family in a station wagon, we're told by the survivors that he was asleep at the time of the car wreck: his name was Fernando, always smiling, a hard worker, and then he was gone: 14 years old he was, and I remember him now like yesterday ...... I knew clicking on this reaction, I'd have those memories roll back in: he's not forgotten and while it reminds me of the loss, the pain, I'm reminded of his smiles and his constant joking at work, I cherish music, it always brings it back: thanks JoVaughn!
Fantastic reaction. Anni-Frid (Frida) is usually less popular than Agnetha, however Frida was the lead singer of three of the top five biggest selling singles: ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’, ‘Super Trouper’ and ‘Fernando’. Listen to ‘When All Is Said And Done’. Agnetha is an amazing interpreter of songs Frida uses her voice like an instrument, and that combination brought the ‘third voice’ in the ABBA sound.
Just to let you know, the name of the group is not Abba. It's ABBA, all capitol letters. It's an acronym of the first letters of each of their names: Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Anni-frid (AKA Frida). An interesting fact about this song is it was written about two old veterans of the Texas-Mexico War (the Alamo war) getting together and reminiscing about their time in battle, not about someone who had died. That always fascinated me because I grew up in that area, just about five miles from the Alamo, yet a band from Sweden made a song about it! I guess that's why I always liked this song so much.

"One Man, One Woman" is another beautiful ABBA song where Frida sings lead.
My mother loved Abba had all records so I was brought up listening to Abba 👍👍🐈🐈🇬🇧🇬🇧
This song was number one on the Australian countdown for over three months! Great reviews cobber.
Always been my favorite Abba song! Great lyric and beautiful music and a Spanish flavor to the music, Wonderful harmonies.
This is in my top 3 favorite ABBA songs! I have this record. I was 7 when this came out.
"FERNANDO"
"TAKE A CHANCE ON ME"
"DANCING QUEEN"
"KNOWING ME KNOWING YOU"
This is such a beautiful song, and my favorite from ABBA.
There is nothing you can say other than ABBA is magnificent
Please notice the fine low voice of Agnetha, which underlines the great lead of Frida.
Though a true soprano Agnetha also had a well accomplished and stable low voice.
I will always remember that song from a scene in malcolm in the middle
"I talk to my Harold all the time!"
Also in That 70’s Show with Eric and Donna dancing.
Same 😆
It is so lovely to see all of the young reactors falling in love with the beautiful music of our time.
I’m a 7 ish yo Aussie🇦🇺 lady and it is just great seeing you enjoying it today, it is happy music.
Thankyou I love your reactions
I don't know why, but this song always brings tears to my eyes.
Beautiful Anni-Frid Lyngstad (aka Frida), now Princess Anni-Frid, Countess of Plauen.
You should listen to "Thank You For The Music", "Move On", "Eagle" by Abba.
Every song by Abba is great. And there are so many. You could close your eyes and pick one, and you wouldn't be disappointed. Dancing Queen is my favorite.
I have a big smile in my face because I think of the movie Muriel's Wedding 😂
I love Muriel's Wedding. That movie is so funny
@@JemJam2976
So do I, I wish I could see this movie tonight 😊
One of my favourite movies ever.
Did you know the actress who plays Muriel's caracter gained weight for this movie?
She is a slim girl for real. Toni Collette.
@@Xavier-Denis I think I heard about that
Try "Eagle" by ABBA - one of their best songs not released as a single - and probably their song sounding more like rock than pop. Great lyrics, too
I've been waiting so long for you to listen to this one. I fell in love with Frida when I first saw this. It was 1976 and I was 7 years old. Number one i Australia on the Countdown charts for a whole year. Still gave me butterlies listening to it again. Thanks JV. Peace everyone.
ABBA is another one of my favorite Groups. Started listening 🎧 to them back in the 70"s in 6th Grade. They're AMAZING. Listen 👂 to them now. The winner takes it All is about losing in a relationship.
Gives me chills, what a group! Each member has a part to play and they are the 'perfect' group. Much like the Beatles were in their day.
Gives me goosebumps all over my body! So glad you are finding them years later....... 🤗
Fernando lives!
Watch the movies and enjoy them more!
Australia was the first country to really put ABBA on the world stage.
I'm pretty sure this was their breakout hit!
Thanks for the reaction. I'm not sure how much ABBA you've done. But positive there's plenty more. Lot's of different genres but all great. These girls both sang like angels and together created real magic. Guess what I'm trying to say is ---- More ABBA please.
ABBA is mine and my husband’s favourite band - we had one of their songs for our first wedding dance. My absolute favourite is Does Your Mother Know......give it a listen!! 🤩
cant believe this song is about 40 years ago. classic.
My absolute favorite Abba songLove it love you
My favourite ABBA song. When it came out in the 70s my sister and I used to sing it walking to/from school... good memories 🎵
Those ladies harmonized so well together.
Love ABA always have since the early 70s
I love ABBA..This is a great song, many of their songs were classic..Great group! Both singers have phenominal voices..Frieda is the one you were talking about..The other songs you listened to were sung by Agnetha(the blonde) Frieda also sang many great songs..Great reaction Jay, love it!
Frida is spelled without e
Bjorn has the following to say about this song: "I wrote all the songs as little stories. 'Fernando' was about two old freedom-fighters from the war between Texas and Mexico. I was lying outside one summer night, looking at the stars and it suddenly came to me".
One of my favorite ABBA songs...love it
The blonde girl's name is Agnetha and the brunette's one is Frida. Two fantastic voices ❤
More ABBA you haven't reacted to yet:
Super Trouper

My suggestion for the next ABBA song is either "Chiquitita" or "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)"
That 70’s Show featured this song in an episode.....so funny....
The Kings of Melody in The world 🌹💞🌹💞🌹💞🌹💞 ABBA!!!
They have dozens of hits and totally different and unique. They ARE the best popband ever
