You're correct, the song is about a woman going through a divorce. The reason the song works so well is that we all knew that Agnetha (the singer) and Bjorn (the guy without the beard) were indeed going through a divorce at the time. (the other couple, Frida and Benny) were also married briefly at the time but divorced soon after. Bjorn, her husband, wrote the lyrics for his soon to be ex-wife to sing, quite something when you think about it. The lyrics are quite cold and unemotional, but Agnetha manages to supply all the emotion the song needs, especially her final wailing "The Winner takes it aaaalll....." It's a beautiful song, was a huge No 1 over here in the UK, and re-established Abba at the top after a year or two when they had been *slightly* less successful (though still managed a string of Top Ten hits, just didn't hit No 1). This song, followed by Super Trouper (single) were Abba's last big hits before they took a break for 40 years, and then returned with Voyage, no band that I can think of has done that before, 40 years is a very long time...
They were separating at the time Björn wrote it (with Benny), but he's denied it's about the divorce, saying "it's fiction," and "the words in the song should not be taken literally."
@@rollomaughfling380 Of course, I've seen Bjorn say that, and there may be some truth in it, but it can't be denied that the lyrics are very relateable to most people, because it's a very common and human situation. @@rollomaughfling380 No of course not... but he couldn't really say anything else. Of course the words, the lines sung, are not their own words, I''m sure all relationships are much more complicated than lyrics in a song can ever communicate, but there's an authenticity about the emotions involved in a break-up that I have rarely ever 'felt' from a song in the same way, I think that's what I mean.

My dad used to play Abba on long trips, mostly the upbeat one but I also recall him playing this and cried when the line "The God's may throw a dice, their mind's as cold as ice, and someone way down here, loses someone dear." Looking back I was one big emotional kid for that line to hit me so deep. Abba are in my list of faves. I'm a new fan to your channel and love how eclectic your choices are. Good choice bro.
One of the best songs ever with one of the best videos ever .. This is an absolute classic ! .. I almost always feel on the verge of tears whenever I see it .. Agnetha is just wonderful here.
@norman smithers I don't know if I'd go as far as saying that ABBA "dominated" the 70s in quite the same way the Beatles did in the 60s .. But they were certainly in the very top handful of artists based on record sales of that era, and their popularity and legacy are still extremely strong today . I love their music so much !
@norman smithers We clearly have different ideas about what it means to "dominate" .. The musical and cultural influence and record selling numbers of The Beatles throughout the 60's was worldwide and dwarfed almost every other artist of that era .. ABBA were very big indeed in the 70s, but worldwide they couldn't compare with The Beatles .. In America ( the biggest and most important music market ) ABBA only had 1 song that was a chart topper ( Dancing Queen ) .. And regardless of whether you believe The Beatles or ABBA are the most popular today, that is a different question than how much each band dominated their eras at the time .. Like you, I am a huge fan of both bands,, so we can definitely agree about that .. But we'll just have to agree to disagree on our interpretations of their dominance.
@norman smithers Well maybe you should have made yourself clear the first time .. There was nothing in your remarks to indicate that was your thinking .. Just a little tip for next time.😉
I loved Abba so much. Many radio DJs at the time were very critical of their music because it wasn't what they were used to but in fact they are brilliantly written, much more complicated than some people realised. I was also impressed by the fact that at that time they didn't actually speak English naturaly, it was their second language, being Swedish.
Most young people and many of you Americans doing"reacting"-vids think the Judges in the lyrics are the juridic/legal ones .. As a Swede growing up at the time this song was released I`m pretty sure this is not what the lyrics are really about..(we rarely use/used Courts for fixing/making up after a divorce or a break-up).. "The Judges" who will "decide" in this song are most likely referring to people close to the divorcing couple.. and this tells us a lot about how we humans often take one part in such situations.. And if you think of it this way , these lyrics becomes even more deep, sensetive and great... I really believe that is why ABBAs got so huge ..and still remains so popular and appreciated!! Björn and Benny are legends in songwriting , that`s the true + big explanation !! :D :D
Thank you for the reaction. Björn used to say the lyrics are fiction, but in the end he told, that he wrote the lyrics after their divorce, drinking whiskey, within an hour. He then asked Agnetha if it would be too painful for her to sing it, but she said she would. As the professional she is. Please react to The Day Before You Came. That song is brilliant in all it`s simplicity. Absolutely brilliant. Another great break up song by Abba: When All Is Said And Done, lead vocals sung by Frida.
ABBA new how to construct the perfect pop tune and this is no exception. Words and music in perfect sync with each other. A fab song by the Swedish fab 4. Great choice of songs today Jay.😀🎶📀❤️
ABBA has always been one of my favorite groups. They had lots of hits & I owned many of their albums. I can't think of a bad song by them. Some of their best are "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme", "Thank You For The Music", "Does Your Mother Know?", "Waterloo", "Money, Money, Money", "The Name Of The Game", "Super Trouper", "I Have A Dream", "Voulez-Vous", "Fernando", "Chiquitita", "Take A Chance On Me", "Mamma Mia", "SOS", "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Dancing Queen" etc. Nice to see that they are back together again recording after all these years.
And more and more... Slipping throuth my fingers, If it wasn't for the night, Hasta mañana, My mama said, Happy new year , Bang a boomerang, etc... etc...
What I like about this song is it doesn't always have to be about divorce, it might help someone give through other lost. Like the getting fired or recovering from a serious illness. I like waterloo, Fernando (in English & in Spanish) Mama Mia.
Great to see you again Trevor. I think it's interesting, the counterpoint between the meaning of the song and how it goes uptempo is like a metaphor for the story of the band, going through extreme emotional situations while still having to function to put on shows and make recordings. Also let me just say, that voice...those voices...have an almost supernatural impact. They really take me someplace.
Hey Jayvee! I always think Abba are the only band who can sing upbeat songs that have dark lyrics beside them. They give you that lifting feel but when you listen to the lyrics you realise what they are singing. Brilliant song nevertheless. Sweden has brought us some amazing bands over the years. Yes, so "Squeaky-White" clean. Uggggh! As if they were fem-bots from an "Austen Powers" comedy. Don't stand too close to them, if they touch you, you turn into a "Stepford Wife" zombie. I bet that if you stand really close to one, they smell like sour snatch, and vinegar. Uummm, anti- bacterial fresh!
The story behind ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" is about the pain and difficulty of a couple's breakup, and the emotional resonance it had for the song's writer, Björn Ulvaeus: Inspiration The song's narrative was inspired by Ulvaeus's separation from his wife and ABBA co-star Agnetha Fältskog, which happened 18 months before the song's release. However, Ulvaeus has said that the song is mostly fictional and that he and Fältskog weren't winners or losers in their divorce. Original title The song was originally titled "The Story Of My Life" and had a more upbeat rhythm. Lead vocals Agnetha Fältskog was the lead vocalist on the song, and some in the studio were moved to tears when she recorded her vocals.
@@leahdoerr731 i never stop singing or dancing, im 62 and still boppin around, i sing loud and terribly 👍 always appreciate younger ones taking the time to listen, and you know they are listening, their comments match ours from that era, the music never dies. Then amira, nella fantasia. She is 13 when singing this one. The andre reiu on leaves me in tears every single time. Im blown away, her voice at 9 yrs old is compared to maria callais. Not 1 singing lesson, self taught by watching youtube. There were 15,000 ppl in reiu audience. She sings , last verse, seeing me so tense , no self confidence-" cause the Winner takes it all" so the winner took her self confidence as many unfortunately find themselves after a break up especially when the other cheated or has a new love. Enjoyed you introducing ABBA to your friend- I am from Sweden and grew up on this music- You asked for suggestions for him to react next : 1 Dancing Queen. 2. Move On 3. Name of the Game! 4. Chiquitita 5. Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (a man after midnite) 6. Knowing me Knowing you. 7. Does your mother know 8. I do, I do, I do, I do! 9. Fernando 10. Super Trooper .....and there's like 20 more but I'll stop there🤣 Name of the Game
Sorry sweetheart, I divorced my ex in 1987 and have still not managed to listen to this wonderful song, it brings back so many memories that I thought that time would have erased by now. I have been married for 29 years to a wonderful and gentle man and I have a happy life so those black days are best left behind me. God bless you all love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK
It was also the breaking up song for the band ABBA. It came out as their last single, just after (!) the two couples had broken up both. And by the time the song came out, the whole situation, with the plans to divorce both couples, was already clear, even to the general public. Sad story though.
It gets a whooole lot more impressive when you know the one she was divorcing is the piano player in the same band. Shes standing there singing this very intimite and personal song and its about the guy sitting on the piano behind her as they preform... Thats taking professionalism to a whole new level.
Ha.. i always really liked yhese duo reactions lol partly cause was fun seeing jayvee try keep a lid on his excitement and partly cause his buddy sorta slowly got schooled 😭❤️

Jayvee .... Very surprised you haven't reviewed The Bee Gees "One" yet .... Their last No. 1 in the U.S. I see quite a few already have .... Well worth it, you'll love it .... 😉👍
Polka with a beat, they were amazing and the lyrics are quite sharp deep and meaningful. Like Fleetwood Mac, ABBA had internal struggles and actually wrote songs about it and put it out there for all to see and those voices....OK let's make this easy, listen to ABBA Gold and take it from there.
Hello to Trevor from Cody wyoming! Nice to see you both... you're my hands down favorite reactor! You keep reacting I'll keep watching! I love your energy and your reactions are so genuine it's a breath of fresh air...believe me😀👋
Hey Jay & Trevor, as you continue to listen to older music you will begin to notice the names of the songs can be confusing or taken in many different ways. Sometimes that is done by design. I wonder if Trevor would be interested in listening to some sultry blues rock, by one of the best blues-rock jam bands ever "The Allman Brothers Band -Whipping Post (9/23/1970)" two brothers Duane Allman and Gregg Allman from Jacksonville Florida formed this band in 1969. The founding members were Duane Allman (lead guitar), Gregg Allman (lead vocals, keyboardist), Dickey Betts (lead guitarist), Berry Oakley (bassist), Butch Trucks (drums) and Jaimoe Johanson. ABBA was one of the best legendary female rock bands of the 1970's and 80's. Nice reaction👍
3 doors down…love me when I’m gone and here without you also Jerry rafferty …right down the line and bakers street….these are all amazing songs. Would love to see your reaction to them…especially 3 doors down

The story behind ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" is about the pain and difficulty of a couple's breakup, and the emotional resonance it had for the song's writer, Björn Ulvaeus:
Inspiration
The song's narrative was inspired by Ulvaeus's separation from his wife and ABBA co-star Agnetha Fältskog, which happened 18 months before the song's release. However, Ulvaeus has said that the song is mostly fictional and that he and Fältskog weren't winners or losers in their divorce.
Original title
The song was originally titled "The Story Of My Life" and had a more upbeat rhythm.
Lead vocals
Agnetha Fältskog was the lead vocalist on the song, and some in the studio were moved to tears when she recorded her vocals.
Its great to see you young ones enjoying this music xxx thank you 👍😎 i know its not modern, but share, dance, sing, enjoy 💙
I agree completely, I'm 52 I'm from Wyoming I'm dancing and singing as we speak
@@leahdoerr731 i never stop singing or dancing, im 62 and still boppin around, i sing loud and terribly 👍 always appreciate younger ones taking the time to listen, and you know they are listening, their comments match ours from that era, the music never dies.
If you want a really beautiful voice, incredibly not considered normal for a 9 year old, youtube amira willighagan on hollands got talent with sub titles, then amira with andre reiu. Amira won HGT xxx enjoy, headphones, maybe a joint👍 youre set xxx💋💋💋keep dancing always and its compulsory to grow old but not compulsory to grow up, enjoy, even on bad days. I admire those who take time to listen, especially our young generations. 😘💙
She sings , last verse, seeing me so tense , no self confidence-" cause the Winner takes it all" so the winner took her self confidence as many unfortunately find themselves after a break up especially when the other cheated or has a new love.
Enjoyed you introducing ABBA to your friend- I am from Sweden and grew up on this music- You asked for suggestions for him to react next :
1 Dancing Queen. 2. Move On
3. Name of the Game! 4. Chiquitita
5. Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (a man after midnite) 6. Knowing me Knowing you.
7. Does your mother know 8. I do, I do, I do, I do! 9. Fernando 10. Super Trooper .....and there's like 20 more but I'll stop there🤣
Name of the Game
Sorry sweetheart, I divorced my ex in 1987 and have still not managed to listen to this wonderful song, it brings back so many memories that I thought that time would have erased by now. I have been married for 29 years to a wonderful and gentle man and I have a happy life so those black days are best left behind me. God bless you all love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK
Good song one of those my mom grew up with i enjoy listening to
Gotta love Trevor's chill vibe!
It was also the breaking up song for the band ABBA. It came out as their last single, just after (!) the two couples had broken up both. And by the time the song came out, the whole situation, with the plans to divorce both couples, was already clear, even to the general public. Sad story though.
Yes, it's a happy celebratory song 😁
Hi Jay and Trevor. My favourite ABBA song 👊👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
Have loved ABBA for decades. Thank you for this 👍
You are so pleasent 😊❤
It gets a whooole lot more impressive when you know the one she was divorcing is the piano player in the same band.
Shes standing there singing this very intimite and personal song and its about the guy sitting on the piano behind her as they preform...
Thats taking professionalism to a whole new level.
Song is so sad . I’ve been through divorce this is so accurate
Love ABBA and what a beautiful voice .Can you play ABBA the name of the game :)
Hi Trevor!Welcome to Jv's!
👋 I grew up to that song! 🌈
Great singing great song
Check out 'The Day Before You Came'. Another great melancholic ABBA song.
Ha.. i always really liked yhese duo reactions lol partly cause was fun seeing jayvee try keep a lid on his excitement and partly cause his buddy sorta slowly got schooled 😭❤️
YES 😃 ABBA
ABBA is absolutely incredible....and mostly about the brilliant COMPOSITIONS....at least thats what I think...
It was voted as the best pop song at one stage.
I still can not believe you have not yet heard anything from MARILLION one of the best rock/pop groups of the 80's here in the u.k. with the best electric guitar player STEVE ROTHERY this group had huge album sales into the millions with MISPLACED CHILDHOOD & A SCRIPT FOR A JESTERS TEAR....Yet no one has yet featured them in a reaction video..
Don't wanna be a mood hoover but I've just decided that's what I'm gonna have played at my funeral 😃
I've been struggling with that for years.. thanks bro..
Jayvee .... Very surprised you haven't reviewed The Bee Gees "One" yet .... Their last No. 1 in the U.S. I see quite a few already have .... Well worth it, you'll love it .... 😉👍
The winner is her and the hubbie the one that wrote the song.
I love your energy and your reactions are so genuine it's a breath of fresh air...believe me😀👋
Darondo's "Didn't I", is another amazing song.
So fun to see your friend react to your excellent choices, you should react to his!😉
Thank you for another great reaction video🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
Good to see, Jayvee 😄You've already got the next ABBA song for Trevor "Dancing Queen". Do it 👍👍
❤️❤️❤️
The sidekick reaction really takes this reaction down (sorry Jayvee, I've always loved your reactions!).
Paula Fernandes - Olhos De Céu is all the music you will ever need
FIRRRST! Hanging out with Trevor so much by now, I'm calling him Trev in my mind. Hey Trev and Jovaughn!
I dont know if Trevor can handle a deep dive into 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, music Lol, so he better buckle up and come prepared.
@@saturnnet1627, here for it!
3 doors down…love me when I’m gone and here without you also Jerry rafferty …right down the line and bakers street….these are all amazing songs. Would love to see your reaction to them…especially 3 doors down
