Aging is a privilege and I am so proud to be at 51 years old and having the life, and complexion, that I have. That said, I really thought I was taking better care of my neck but my last driver's license photo looked like I was wearing an accordion turtleneck so please do moisturize, my lovelies ❤

And when you have extra moisturizer on your hands just rub it on your neck it's really going to take literally a second. God my 30’s have been all about “what I wish I had done in my 20’s”
    1) started my own retirement account. Compound interest and all that.
    2) wore sunscreen (past sun worshiper)
    3) started tret
    4) had a solid skincare routine
    5) loved my body instead of punishing my body
    6) stopped drinking alcohol
I’m 35 doing all the above now but man what a positive position I’d be in if I had started the above in my 20’s.
It’s all a learning experience. I love my life and I am eternally grateful that I have the opportunity to learn from the past.

I turned 40 last year. A friend told me your 20s are for figuring out who you are, your 30s are about processing your past and figuring out how you want to live going Forward, and your 40s are for finally enjoying yourself. As a 42 y/o who gets clocked for 10+ years younger than I am, I'm very grateful that I've always been interested and active about skincare and sunscreen. I've been applying sunscreen every day since I was 21 and the difference it has made is visible. Skin cancer runs in my family so it played double duty but the aging benefit is a bonus xD That being said, I completely agree that aging is a privilege, especially when I realize I'm only five years away from the age my mother died.
Bottom line is don't get obsessed with "fixing" your skin and looking 22 forever but think of skincare as self care, as health care and have fun with it! Consistency is key so use products you like and can afford on a regular basis as well (the cheap stuff can be really good!)

There is a lot of genetics involved in that as well. I am over 50, so I even grew up in the era of tanning beds being super popular but thanks to some weird genetic miracle, I didn't begin really noticeably aging until I passed 50. Now I worry that I'll go into speed aging at some point due to some of the bad behaviors we had when younger. 😳😆

@@thescarletgraywitch8052 So true. I'm 41 and always mistaken for mid 20s. I have plenty of family and close friends a lot older than me. For women, I've especially noticed that once you hit menopause the aging progresses rapidly. All the damage you put your body through starts to show almost overnight! So when someone in their 40s talks about looking younger, not really impressive. But 50+ >> there's definitely good genes and good habits from their youth doing all the work now!!

And I am fully okay with how my story is beginning to show on my face in crows feet and frown lines. I think of them as enhancing my smile, and I call my frown lines my "wisdom lines" because I like the way they make me look discerning. Overall, I have to prioritize taking care of myself and my kids in countless other ways, and I know I'll never regret it as long as I'm always giving it my best.

I have rosacea and "old" skin but it looks amazingly good for 78 because of long time sunscreen use and limited sun time and use of red light therapy for the last couple of yrs. You are so right about keeping your routine simple without too many products. Every time I get sucked into adding some new "must have" products to my routine, my barrier gets thrown out of whack and it takes me weeks to heal it and get things back on track. My main goal was literally just having fun. But around 23, I got really depressed and down with life in general that I stopped for a few years. Now I’m almost 30 and I still struggle with a skin care routine. I don’t know if I notice myself aging but I definitely notice how much harder it is to care about myself or take that extra time.

Loved your points on "well aging". I'm 52 and my philosophy, similar to what you expressed, is that well aging skin is skin that you care about, at the age you're in. We so often get carried away with whatever's going on in life and we neglect physical self care sometimes (or become hyper-focused; both are problems). Well aging, then, is an awareness of where you are in life, and taking steps to take care of yourself where you are.

I think sticking with products you know your skin likes once you've found them rather than trying everything is definitely great advice. ❤

Keep your basic routine, yep thank you needed that lol after my insane acne finally cleared up after having surgery to excise endometriosis I was only using water and lanolin, I started watching your videos and decided I needed to add some stuff into my routine. Boy was that a mistake I either break out or flush out! Going back to water and lanolin, it doesn’t feel like much of a pampering this way, but at least my skin feels good and I don’t constantly feel like I’m coming down with a fever 😅

I feel like I’ve looked my best ever as someone in my 30s but dear lord my 30s have been rough 😂 I call it my broken era because I’m realizing all my choices and actually digesting the consequences of those choices. Being happy takes work so I’m hoping by 40 I can find that freedom within myself to just love life again and accept myself with knowing there’s always room for growth. I just want to live without all these overwhelming tedious thoughts 😩 all with time and some work I’ll get there!

Hypochlorous acid has been a game changer. I am a nurse that wears a mask a lot and when I introduced Tower 28 into my routine I really noticed that the pores of my nose appeared smaller and didn’t “fill” up as quickly. I just ordered some from Prequel and it came today. Love this and can’t wait to try the Gleanser.

I can't believe how much they charge for a bottle of the Tower 28 SOS Spray. I was wanting to try it, but it's a pure money grab from that brand. It costs very little to make hyperchlorous acid spray, and they are charging close to $40 Canadian. Prequel doesn't ship to Canada and when I emailed them inquiring when they might be opening a Canadian store I received a rather rude response telling me if I try to use a mail forwarding service they will cancel the order and ban me from buying in the future. Like, I wasn't even asking about that.

Diet makes such a huge difference. The processed foods we eat are literally killing us at record rates, of course they’re making our skin bad too. In the past two years I’ve increased my raw fruits and veggies consumption to nearly half my diet and I’ve got the best skin ever. Clean eating works for so many issues

Not sure it’s so much clean eating, as all foods are processed in some ways. However, looking at what you personally need for nutrition, is probably the biggest thing. Many people don’t get enough protein (should be at least 0.8 g per lb if you are sedentary and much more if you are active). Since skin and muscle are protein, and your muscle is completely renewed every 3-4 months, it makes sense that this would have enormous impact.

This whole video hit home for me I don't watch any skin care videos anymore because I am an anxious spender and I have actually really messed up my skin barrier in a terrier way multiple times. I have allergies and eczema and didn't have health insurance until recently so I have a doctor now and I am pretty much healed now aside from my redness. But I was always influenced into trying new things and chasing poreless glass skin and it just isn't really possible. And people don't look like that in real life. I used to even think that if I got Botox I could get rid of all my pores too. I don't know but I love this video I needed to see this thank you ❤

I've started now trying to be better about that, my hands don't have major damage, but I've definitely noticed a difference between the skin on my hands vs my face & other places I regularly use skin care & lotion.
Aging is definitely better than the alternative though!

Hyaluronic acid with B3 serum on the back of hands and neck followed by sunscreen works wonders. Argireline serum and HA under the eyes as well...such a difference. Also, use BHA liquid exfoliant, and AHA smooths out the texture.

I wish I'd always been better about sunscreen, and these days I'm guilty of not using it in the colder weather months. But I'm a truck driver, and I'm basically sitting in a fishbowl all day, so it's extra important that I use it (anyone who drives a lot for their job should really be on the sunscreen)! Thank you for mentioning hands, that's an easy one to forget!
I get a lot of compliments on my skin and I credit the fact that I did start using sunscreen in my teens (thanks, Mom!!), and also just from improving my skincare using things you've shared, James! I also started using botox in my 40s and I think that was just the right time. You're right, it't not necessary to start using it at a really young age. It's just a waste of money!!

‘Keep your routine basic’ is so true. I have rosacea and sensitive skin too, and I’m finally accepting that I can’t be the person who tries new products all the time. I’ve developed multiple allergies to ingredients and the contact dermatitis isn’t worth it. Even .018% tretinoin is too much for my skin. So I’m finally sticking to what I know works for me: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. I’d love to work in a gentle exfoliant & retinol, but that’s probably my limit

There are some acids, like mandelic and lactic that exfoliate very gently. Bakuchiol can also be a good retinoid alternative but since it is a plant extract you really need to look at the manufacturer to see if you are actually getting an active. I can’t really use retinoids either, in any great percentage. I can use low percentage adapalene but only on trouble spots and very mild retinoids, but never every day. It destroys my barrier. I have no such issue with bakuchiol.

    • @funsizedi88

The Naturium Retinal has been a game changer for me, as I have sensitive, fair skin that just burns no matter what, roseca on my cheeks(like under the eyes and on either side of my nose) plus hormonal acne. I've been using a targeted approach. I only use Retinal on my "problem" areas like the forehead/ nasal labia folds and jawline. I use 10% lactic acid, bit started with 5% and worked my way up. I rotated actives and only used them every other night for the entire first month.

In reference to your comment regarding IBS and skin - I have IBS also and noticed the connection between my IBS flaring and my face breaking out. I started taking ginger (I just take a capsule of ginger from a brand at the drugstore) each time I eat a meal to help with digestion and my skin cleared up. Actually the skin on the rest of my body is much softer and smoother also. It also helped my IBS tremendously. I've been dealing with horrible eczema on my hands for the past 5 years. It made me feel like my hands had aged a lot. But what I've learned over the past year is to keep a bottle of hand cream or lotion by the soap dispenser in my bathroom and kitchen and Everytime I wash my hands I use moisturizer right after. It has helped a lot with both the eczema and the feeling of them aging.

  • @beccy46

Think of how often we wash our hands? We are constantly stripping them of their natural moisture and aren’t replacing that moisture as often as we need to. That, in combination with the things you mentioned, is why they age so much faster than the face and body.

I've always moisturised even with oily skin. Couldn't afford expensive items, so it was a basic face wash like Garnier or Neutrogena for oily skin, and Nivea oil free moisturiser which contained 'uv filters' - no SPF rating so I just hoped for the best and applied extra by my eyes 😂. I'm currently using Dermatica and have ordered some 'Gruum' products to compliment it 😊. Eye cream I've got a few so I just grab what's nearest - I don't have many lines (The magic 'UV filters in that good ol' Nivea?), so I just use something to brighten and tighten with a bit of moisturisation in it 👌. Thank you for the continued content James, really piques my interest and is relevant, informative, and highly amusing at times! As a holistic esthetician, for me it’s pro-aging! Proactively aging and positively aging, because it’s a beautiful thing, and we are lucky to go through the process of getting older. Coming from a pharmacy background, it really scares me that no one is thinking about the long term health and side effects with all these med spa procedures, strong topicals and medications. Love everything you said today James. 👏

That is aging gracefully. It doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means doing what makes sense and what actually has impact but recognizing you cannot stop the hand of time. It means recognizing that you may not have the resources (time and money) and if it becomes an obsession, you might be sacrificing the things that should matter more.

My adoptive brother was one month younger than me. We celebrated our birthdays together all through our childhood. He passed in 2017 at 37. Birthdays are hard, not because I’m getting older but because he never will. While I may wish I had done things differently, I’m still around to change them which is bittersweet. It makes you realize how trivial worrying about such things is in the grander scheme.

Us in our 30s need to remember we did not have these great resources on skincare in our 20s and it was most definitely a luxury. So expensive with minimal options!
