I remember the first time I heard this song. I was fresh out of high school, driving with the windows down to my job at Jamba Juice from Waikiki beach. I could feel the sun on my skin from laying out - and I still smelt of salt water. I'm sure I was running late to work (sorry, Malia!). And then this song comes on the radio. I remember pulling over on the side of the street - I've never heard anything like it up to this point. And my initial response was bigger than "I like this song" or "I don't like this song." It was a feeling that took over, a sense of wonder and unfamiliarity.
Paul and I really wanted to change things up - because change is always a good thing. Dare to do something that you'd never think of doing. After receiving Ableton, I thought the best way to learn how the hell to use it was by doing a video. It helped - I love how Ableton gives you endless possibilities to create music. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it!

I disagree. I love her and what she does. That said, I've seen her perform several times in person in Los Angeles. What she does here isn't brilliant, but you see IS HER OWN and is awesome. That's why I think she is amazing.

@@ChristoCurrentsFor what it's worth the beat is irrelevant. It's a simple 4/4 time disco beat. She avoids the copyright problems by sampling all original sounds and using her own voice. It also helps that Reznor has released most of the music onto the internet years ago.
@@ChiefSmackahoLLC It's not just that she avoids copyright this way. The track and the video, showing her creating loops and layers on-the-fly is (in my opinion) exactly *how* this cover transcends its source material. It's memorable because we can view it as a process.

shaolinwisdom I must agree with you, NIN music specially those from PHM to The Fragile are songs made not for easy reproduction. In any way to my mind just two bands/musicians made respectable covers: 1 behemoth with wish and 2 devo with head like a hole.

One of my most favorite NIN songs, and songs overall. You did a fantastic cover of this, Kawehi - and that's saying something, because almost all covers of this suck nuts.
A great NIN cover, probably one of the best I've seen yet . Trent Reznor would be proud. Just hearing it in the tone of a woman makes this a unique cover of "Closer" in general. Nice job!

Fine job of recreating a timeless classic. I was just out of college when I heard "Head like a Hole" & I knew then NIN was going to be crushingly good. And then this one released. Industrial music has never been the same since. That song so personifies the messed up, neurotic & morbid culture of the time. Preoccupation with technology, war time, religious fanaticism, drugs... I think today's generation just grew up numb to it. And as much as people think Marylin Manson raised the bar, guess who produced them in the beginning?... Trent Reznor. The man is a genius.

It will be interesting to see that. I have heard some pretty decent covers of my favorite songs and I have heard some absolutely awful covers. There are certain songs that I think should remain untouched (i.e. - Aerosmith's "Dream On" or Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" - shame on your Lorde), but some classics really lend themselves to being covered. I like this artist because she is brave enough to take bold chances, but can still pull off the covers pretty well. I don't think this should be on ongoing trend, but she has definitely carved herself a little niche here. Thank you for the intelligent convo, something you don't see on UA-cam comment threads everyday.

What do you find vile and disgusting about the song specifically? Yes it's aggressive and disturbing but given the meaning it has (a suicidal man who tries to get away from his self-hatred with sex), I think it has some redeeming artistic value. As an aside, compare and contrast this with 2 Chainz or whatever else passes for music these days. There's not a whole lot of difference in how explicit it is.
