"Not sure how ridiculous I appeared on the dance floor with my wife" trust me, there is no wrong way to dance this. whatever rocks your boat is the word.
So for those who don't get the meaning of the song. Essentially it's about feeling ashamed of the things we are addicted too. About the things we do that make us feel alive. The album is incredibly sad. Basically about a person falling into a downward spiral. Hurt is basically the cherry on top and talks about a person who is rock bottom and is thinking about ending it all, and wants to change but feels it's too late. Trent said in an interview it's about finding hope when all else is lost. This album is actually a modern day version of pink Floyd's the Wall, which essentially tells a story of a rockstar who is also going through a downward spiral and uses the metaphor of a wall (nail in the coffin) or events in life that made the person isolate himself away from the world. In the end, no one knows if he came out of it or not. Comfortably numb for example is basically about the guy killing the pain with drugs, using a memory of his childhood as a metaphor for how he is feeling every day, which is sick, and miserable and lost. Songfacts is a great place to learn about the song meanings.
Comfortably Numb isn't about that lol. Roger Waters received a sedative/pain killer for stomach issues before going onstage in Philadelphia. He relates that experience to the one he had as a kid.
Even trent said what Johnny did to that song was more then he could ever hope to accomplish with it and the emotion Johnny portrayed was so raw, that hurt is now johnny cash song and trent will cover it from time to time. But not often

One of the best and most fun concerts I ever went to was Nine David Inch Bowie Nails. They did their own sets but then they did a set together. And the… unique sounds of Davis Bowie with NIN all on stage together was amazeballs!

I’ve seen a lot of bands. And NIN is up there with the best shows I’ve seen. The show was originally cancelled, and Trent came out on the makeup date and apologized and said he was going to make sure he gave 100%....and he did!
I’m 51. Saw him when I was 19 for the first time when he toured for Pretty Hate Machine. Small club in Tampa. Then saw him two more times when his shows were quite the production and he performed in stadiums. He puts on amazing shows and puts a lot of work into set design. I think his music defines the Gen X generation - full of angst, independence, fierceness, and rawness.
I remember first time I heard this I was around 19-20, my Fake ID era… in a Bar/club, that beat kicked in, the empty dance area, exploded with college girls and once the chorus hit, the older woman jumped up.. it was crazy. But amazing at the same time..

@@UnsuspectingCommenterPassingBy Yeah, I dunno - first off if you know the context for this song it's depressing af, and also the lyrics get real disturbing real fast. When the guy says "help me become somebody else" and "help me get away from myself", that to me feels way more like someone trying to wear someone else's skin, rather than someone doing anything as romantic as "making love" to someone else. Also, it's entirely egocentric - for example "you get me closer to God" - the title lyric - seems just all about him using this person's body as a tool for self-improvement, rather than any notion of partaking in some consensual affair with two distinct people. I mean hell, the act itself is written as basely utilitarian - "f*** you like an animal". There's nothing about 'love' here, it's literally fulfilling primal urges.

I saw them in concert when they put on a million dollar light show and it was easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen. But, they had been played on local Ohio college radio stations for several years before that with Trents first band The Exotic Birds.
He records every track by himself in the studio, and hires a band to tour with him, like PRINCE did, prince usually recorded and played every instrument in the studio
Oh I love your reaction Asia to the first lyrics. The song literally is in a sex addict's brain. The way they think, the words they'd use. No One expects a song like this to be authorized to be released with phrases this song has.
It's more about the pleasure of being in control and domination over someone than it is about sex. If I had to personify this song it'd be Jeffery Dhamer.
@@IHWKR it's more about the ways damaged people sometimes use sex as a form of emotional escapism and as a coping mechanism. The protagonist of the song (the I) is weaving between being self-loathing and being desperate for the affection of whomever the *you* of the song is. As for your interpretation and Dahmer reference, I'd argue the content of Big Man With A Gun is closer to what you're describing than Closer is.
Sanctified is another good song, and it'll give you that bedroom vibe, without the shock value as closer, sanctified is song to groove to while doing the deed.
This was the first album, cassette tape, that I bought for myself! Bought every NineInchNails album since, danced to this song in every goth club. Trent Reznor writes songs about everything, raunchy, ecstatic, grieving, he does it all!
Oh heck yes!!!! Been hoping and waiting on y’all to get to this one! 😆 Love it, such a groove and definitely a vibe-😉lol. Trent Reznor of NIN is a musical genius- ALL those great sounds... all him! Love y’all-💜💙
Reznor is in pain. Brilliant song writing. I saw NIN once when they opened for David Bowie. The best part of that particular concert was when Bowie came on stage and sang with NIN. I think for 5-6 songs. They went back and forth between a Bowie song and a NIN song. Slowly the NIN band members left the stage while Bowie's musicians entered ... just a very cool experience. Apparently, Reznor is a huge fan of Bowie's - many modern-day artists seem to also be influenced by Bowie.
First let me just say,,, I freaken love both!!!! I love watching true reactions and you guys are perfect. I knew the lyrics were about to blow you away, but I loved to see Asia's facial expressions go from listening to the lyrics float in and then the chorus hits you. I can only imagine my face the first time I turned on to Sirius in my car. When he got to the chorus I was shocked. Not in a bad way but I was just shocked and had to question myself by saying, "Wait,,, what did he say?" lol lol I enjoyed watching with you both and am very pleased that you went through it all and were not put off by it. Thank you again for a great reaction.😄😁😄
Head Like A Hole was the first NIN song in the clubs. It’s pretty great and we danced and danced and danced. NIN, Sisters Of Mercy, Front 242… on Sunday nights we took over. 😁❤️
You guys, this is the first band I saw live lol. In 1993. My mom took me to see them in Columbus, Ohio where I lived most of my life. Marilyn Manson opened for them. I was 13. It was amazing.
This makes me want to play quake. Trent Reznor was a fan of doom and he got to make the soundtrack to quake. Its really eerie I always play it on halloween when handing out candy. I just looked and the whole soundtrack is on the offical NIN youtube channel. For thoses who havent heard why are you reading this go listen to it now.
Haha this song was a right of passage when I was a kid. I still remember going on a school field trip in 6th grade and sitting on the bus. My friend Becky had the discman with the *contraband* and my friend Julie solemnly took off the headphones after she finished listening and lowered them over my ears and then they watched my face as the song played, all of our eyes bugged out of our heads. Good memories.
So this just popped up in my feed, July 2024, I don’t know how the hell I missed this, but I cannot wait to watch you guys watch this fkng LOVE NIN 🤘🏼🖤😎💫Oh my God, let’s go!!
I have a copy of The Downward Spiral on SACD.. Trent's work mixed in 5.1 surround is a great experience because of the playful density of his composition.
You're in the music. She's into the lyrics and the mood Trent Reznor and his loyal band are F'ing awesome. Especially live. Don't be scared. This is nuttin'
I had my daughter turn me onto NIN way back when they first came out. She saw them in concert and said it was a great show so I went looking for live performances. I found a clip that I fell in love with. They opened this show with it. It's called "Terrible Lie" if you check it out find the live version that says AATCHB Español Subs.. It has the words to the song in the subtitles and not in Spanish but English . It means And All That Could Have Been. Trent speaks about his loss of faith in God. All the things that religion promises but when he needed it most it failed him. So it was a Terrible Lie. I love that song. You can also check out their probably most famous song "Head Like A Hole". It's a great song too. But "Terrible Lie" Never gets any mention.Just to give a bit of credit to the song that you'll find it paired with this is "Sin". It is a really good song too. But do them off the AATCHB DVD.
Trent Reznor is a musical genius and has released a huge amount music as/with the band Nine Inch Nails not to mention he's been a composer or contributor to countless soundtracks on movies and TV shows and also has written for or worked with hundreds of other artists. He did this all while demanding the recording labels not interfere with his creations. Even early on in his career he refused to sign a contract with a label that allowed them any say so in what happens in the creation of the music, only agreeing to them being able to remove any song or songs they deemed inappropriate for release from under their label, and as you can see they weren't to strict. Lol.
Trent and NIN is in a class by itself. Their album "Pretty Hate Machine" should be in everyone's music library.
Truer words were never spoken!
Definitely a classic. My first exposure to NiN was when they did the soundtrack for Quake, and I've been a fan ever since.

But, they had been played on local Ohio college radio stations for several years before that with Trents first band The Exotic Birds.
He records every track by himself in the studio, and hires a band to tour with him, like PRINCE did, prince usually recorded and played every instrument in the studio
Michael Jackson tried to do the same.
@@IHWKR Most even remotely close. It's about self hatred and obsession and not domination or sex.
Erotically Eerie!! Perfectly said, I love it!! NIN is such a great band, seen them live twice.
Sanctified is another good song, and it'll give you that bedroom vibe, without the shock value as closer, sanctified is song to groove to while doing the deed.
Excellent suggestion -I would add Kinda I Want To and The Only Time also.
Asia's wait what double take!! 🤭🤭🤣🤣☠
Came specifically for that
@@Aughtel I think most of us did. 🤣
I was expecting Asia to jump on BJ midway through the song. She definitely caught the vibe. Lol!
Y’all definitely need to explore more NIN. A couple of my favorites are “Reptile” and “Only.” 🔥
Just imagine being in a packed club and this comes on, floor is full.
Fan since the 80s. A favorite band
This was the first album, cassette tape, that I bought for myself! Bought every NineInchNails album since, danced to this song in every goth club. Trent Reznor writes songs about everything, raunchy, ecstatic, grieving, he does it all!
I giggled when I saw you were reacting to this one lol 😂
It definitely put you in that mood. I remember 20 or so years ago when I was at the clubs every weekend and this song would come on.
I laughed so hard I snorted at her reaction to the first chorus. 😂
They used this in the show scene for the movie Magic Mike XXL. As soon as it came up, I had to see your reaction! Classic!
The looks on Asia face during the song and when she realized what what said, were priceless.
I got the notification and pulled over on interstate, had to see this
I love how BJ is feeling this song right off of the bat while Asia is blushing and stunned 😂
I can't even count how many times I danced to this in a goth club or on a party, love it 🖤
“Erotic and eerie”
I couldn’t have said it better myself
Yeah this song was a whole vibe in the club 😇😆
The video for this use to creep me the F out. I was in middle school when it came out and was like OMG!!!
Miss Asia digging the heart beat sound and her look at the big part is priceless
BTW remember the Eminem (Slim Shady) song "My Name Is"? "Hey kids, want to see me stick nine inch nails through each one of my eyelids".....yeah.
Always adored the production on this track
Oh heck yes!!!! Been hoping and waiting on y’all to get to this one! 😆 Love it, such a groove and definitely a vibe-😉lol. Trent Reznor of NIN is a musical genius- ALL those great sounds... all him! Love y’all-💜💙
Making Baby Music! lol great song to get it on to when you aren't trying to be quiet Hahahaha!!
I ❤️ your reactions! My only wish was that you had experienced this song while watching the music video, it takes it to a whole other level!
Not in a bad way but I was just shocked and had to question myself by saying, "Wait,,, what did he say?" lol lol
I enjoyed watching with you both and am very pleased that you went through it all and were not put off by it. Thank you again for a great reaction.😄😁😄
My all time favorite concert to watch on UA-cam is NIN Tension 2013 in Los Angeles. Amazing.
Raw... absolutely love these guys.
Back in the 90s nice hit to dance to... alot of my black friends liked it too had a good beat
Her reaction makes me happy! 😂 I love her😊
Haha this song was a right of passage when I was a kid.
This in the club was the best
Her face is priceless! 😂
So this just popped up in my feed, July 2024, I don’t know how the hell I missed this, but I cannot wait to watch you guys watch this fkng LOVE NIN 🤘🏼🖤😎💫Oh my God, let’s go!!
Iconic song & sound! 90s Seattle alt-rock legendary DJ, Marco Collins, introduced the whip remix that blew up radio.
This is pure Industrial music, guys! It's samples, electronic rhythms, synths and noises on loop, put together to create Art. : )
I have a copy of The Downward Spiral on SACD.. Trent's work mixed in 5.1 surround is a great experience because of the playful density of his composition.
Love how you let the song ride without interrupting. I appreciate it. And for that, I'm subscribing
Memories. Prom was DJ'd by a student, he played this, said he just kept missing the bleep.
Head like a hole. Is my favorite song from NIN
You're in the music.
She's into the lyrics and the mood
Trent Reznor and his loyal band are F'ing awesome.
This song is Genius. Nothing like it ever.
Lol.
To me this is a love song! He is singing about how empty everything feels except when he is with her ❤️❤️❤️
