Nine Inch Nails - The Hand That Feeds - Kawehi

  • Someone recently questioned if I should be headlining my own tour. This last tour was rough - some cities I did great, some cities I didn’t. In hindsight, I would’ve listened to my gut and waited until 2022 when were all comfortable/safe enough to party together in one sweaty, musical pizza party 🍕.
Coming home, I had serious thoughts about quitting. Never playing out live again. Ever. I was heartbroken and depressed. I have never questioned doing what I love for a living. But this time…I did. The lows were REALLY low, and paired with my stage fright/exhaustion/pandemic I was DONE. I thought….maybe I’m just not good at this?
And then this past weekend, I decided to go busking for the first time in almost a decade. I only played one song. I told myself I wanted to try the new portable battery out in the wild, and make a new youtube video - but really, I think deep down I wanted to see if I had it in me to get out there again, play in front of people and….ENJOY it, you know? And something amazing happened - I had FUN. I was sweaty, but I was SMILING. I still wanted to barf, but I was LIVING. I made $4, then spent that $4 on a shot of jameson 🎉💃🏻. I just had fun doing what I love for the first time in a LOOONG time.
    xo.

It's the Dunning-Kruger effect. Those who are least competent believe themselves competent at everything, while the most competent-like this insanely talented person here-feel like it must be this easy for everyone, and underestimate their own ability. Whether she knows it or not, she MURDERED this song.

Agreed. That inviting soul comes from the Aloha Spirit we Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiian people) are raised with. We are taught from a very young age that the other person comes first before ourselves.
Living with Aloha means that we always take care of the other person first. In that way, we never have to worry about taking care of ourselves because the other person is taking care of us.
If the people of this world could ALL live with Aloha, just imagine what this world would be.
And with that in mind, i dare you to Live With Aloha and see where that gets you.
No laila e noho me ke Aloha, e mālama i kekahi i kekahi, e aloha kekahi i kekahi i kēlā me kēia lā a ʻoi aku ka maikaʻi o kēia ao. Aloha mākou iā ʻoe Kawehi a haʻaheo mākou Aloha mākou iā ʻoe e ko mākou kaikuahine!

From one artist to another, I understand the anxiety, depression, and awful battles of self-doubt. The consensus amongst the rest of my fellow writer friends was that the pandemic deeply effected our ability to create. Try not to be too hard on yourself this has been a rough couple of years for creatives everywhere across all the genres.
I don't want to invalidate your feelings, but as an outsider to your personal experience I have to say that you are so incredibly talented. I was so glad I stumbled upon your youtube page and your music. Your wonderful gifts and impressive talents have gotten me through some dark times, especially, these last couple of years.

Incredibly talented people living there (as seen here) along with an appreciative audience for new and experimental sounds (despite what you might gather from all the walk-bys here). And since it’s near both I-70 and I-35, it’s a must-stop town for bands touring the country. I saw so many great shows there as a student at amazing and intimate venues. Another amazing performance. I've loved this song ever since stumbling upon it on the Rock Band video games, and your cover got me all excited over it again. Hope I get a chance to see you cover this live one day.

I LOVE this. The fact that you did this during December is awesome. The holiday music as you're setting up is great. PERFECT song choice for the holiday :)

Kawehi, you are fantastic. I absolutely adore your renditions of the Nirvana tracks and NiN's 'Closer' and this was so badass too. Respect for getting over the stage-fright too, I know how intense the anxiety can be but once you start and zone in and you remember you do it because you love the feeling

I gotta go revisit that album (and NIN in general, honestly). Such a well-thought-out, excellently-performed cover!

This just randomly came up in my feed and as a massive NIN fan I was interested to hear a solo cover of arguably my favourite tune. Kawehi, this version was totally amazing while your talent is off the charts, and I've never missed a NIN tour of Australia so my frame of reference is pretty good. Really looking forward to seeing and hearing more from you and thanks so much for sharing. Subscribe!

Woohoo, Mass Street busking!! I wish I had been downtown that day to see this! I would have been cheering so loudly for you. I am so sorry things have been so hard. But selfishly, I hope you never quit. Your voice gives me chills, and your tunes make me feel all the feelings. I am so happy you had fun doing this. The past couple of years have been ROUGH, on everyone, but I think creatives got hit harder than most. Maybe the hardest. It will get better. I think it pretty much has to. ♥️

This is a fantastic rendition! My band hasn't played live in almost two years and we just booked our first show back. It's nerve wracking, to be honest! But music is more important now than ever. Wishing you a fantastic 2022!

I'm soo glad you found the love in doing what you love again. You're far too amazing of an artist to give up on this. Seriously. KEEP GOING Kawehi. Me and soo many other people would be so bummed to find out you stopped. If you read dopamine nation or watched the Huberman lab podcast with Anna Lembke, It might help you appreciate that the lows are just part of it. JUST PLEASE DONT EVER STOP!
