  • For 2018 Chevy put the Equinox crossover on a crash diet, shrinking it from a Kia Sorento-sized crossover to direct RAV4 and CR-V competitor. In the process they shaved over four hundred pounds of curb weight from the vehicle making the new Equinox one of the lightest in the segment. The light curb weight and a new family of turbocharged engines (including the segment's only diesel at the moment) make the Equinox one of the sportiest compact CUVs on the market. Toss in an interior that's towards the top of the pack, a new focus on safety and an aggressive base price and the Equinox is a strong contender. Can it dethrone the Honda CR-V which is all-new for 2017? That remains to be seen.

    After having driven the 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited (3 times!) and the 2017 Honda CR-V (twice!) as well as the 2018 Equinox AWD Premier (3 times), I purchased the Equinox. I just liked it better than the other two and I couldn't get over how "staid" and stale the RAV4's interior was. I'm coming from a V6 back to a 4 and find the Equinox's 170 HP, 203 lb.-ft of torque in its base 1.5L turbo sufficient for our needs. Purchased the Iridescent Pearl with Jet Black / Brandy interior. Getting lots of positive comments, in particular about the interior as to how "upscale" it looks. There's plenty of room for everyone and the fuel economy is O.K., as well.

      Thank you. With incentives it makes the Chevy cost less than the others, and its interior looks way better than RAV4.

      I drove them all too in the last month. Plus the price overall across all can't touch the Equinox.

      @AL-mp3zo 6 років тому +1

      True. So many other automakers seem to be going to a CVT to squeeze out that extra fuel economy. It's great that Chevy keeps a real auto-transmission in there.

      @ravenjames3873 6 років тому

      it has 240 in torque. so when you add about 140-145hp, that makes it a quick little crossover. it's not fast by any means, but i can see a respectable 0-60 time in about 7.9 seconds. which is alot better than 9.5 seconds. the 2.0t turbo is probably gonna be a faster, but i only see that going 7 seconds flat. i think going with the diesel is the better option, and a better value.

    Outstanding review, Alex! Thank you. After having test driven the 2018 Equinox AWD Premier last week as well as the RAV4 AWD Premium and RAV4 AWD Hybrid Limited, I'm pretty much sold on the Equinox. I hope, though, that official fuel estimates are more accurate than the last time around.

    Although I don't like the CVT transmission which comes with the CR-V, I think the CR-V is clearly the vehicle to buy in this class. Better acceleration, mileage, size, and reliability. I would think they will likely be able to compete on price though. I would look at the 2.0L turbo when it hits the market nonetheless.

  • @paulholland315

      I agree. The 1.5 is peppy enough. I don't have kids, so not thinking of it as a 'family' vehicle. Usually only have 1-2 people with me. I looked at Chevy Trax. The seat is made for a tiny female frame, really not comfortable at all. I lean toward GM (always had them) so the 'Nox is a decent choice. It's also the #1 company fleet SUV in the US.

      Comparing the CR-V's optional engine to the Equinox base engine doesn't make for a good comparison. It IS interesting that both are turbo charged and 1.5L but clearly the Chevy 1.5 is less aggressively tuned or less sophisticated to make a price point. Just like the CR-V 2.4L engine is quite a modest albeit well proven affair.

    You know the Diesel will only be available in the top trims. 9.5 for 37K & that's 2WD. Almost 10 seconds for an AWD? The price for a loaded 2.0L will be over 40K.

    • @ravenjames3873

    I am very impressed with the over new look both inside and out. I do like what is not standard on all Equinox trim levels ie: heated seats, remote keyless entry and push button start. I am glad that GM is staying away from the cvt. I hate the droning of an engine at higher rpms. I have seen this new Equinox in person. I like it even more. A few things that I don't like about Honda is there desire/need to make the entire driver info center pretty much all graphics and hardly any real gauges. And they are finally bringing back the volume knob. And Honda's idea of keyless entry is grabbing the door handle. What if you are wearing gloves? Will the door handle still acknowledge your hand?

    As of today, November 14th, the diesel is out finally! It will come in LT and Premier trims only as an engine option. MPG is estimated for the AWD version to be EPA estimated city 28 mpg, 38 mpg highway and a cruising range of 592.8 miles. Engine specs is a 1.6 liter turbo diesel, double overhead cam, 4 in line, 137 HP (@3750 rpm) and 240 #/ft of torque (@ 2000 rpm). That's pretty good torque on the low end of the rpm band - a typical diesel trait. Pricing for the LT and Premier range from mid- $33,000 MSRP to almost $40,000 MSRP with all the bells and whistles. Chevy's annoying options package force you to buy a costly sunroof just to get advanced automated cruise control, more USB ports and a 120 Volt receptacle with built in inverter. But with cloths seats, no sunroof, you can get an AWD diesel Equinox LT with decent safety features for near $30,500 with rebates and incentives in the Northeast. By the way, the diesel also comes with that annoying start stop start technology. Tough on a battery with cranking a diesel on and off all the time.

    I'm curious how the 2.0 L engine option improves acceleration and impacts handling. Hopefully Alex gets to review that soon.

    I view it as major error not to make all engine options available at the same time. Some people who want the new equinox, but not the tiny 1.5L engine, will no doubt choose another brand with more power, rather than wait months to get the 2 liter or diesel.

      In addition, GM provides 5 YEARS of roadside assistance, whereas Honda and Toyota only provide 2 (or 3?) years or roadside assistance, as well as covering a rental vehicle if the vehicle needs to stay in the shop overnight as well as hotel and meals (up to a certain dollar amount) if one is traveling more than 100 miles from home.
      GM also offers OnStar with a much more comprehensive suite of services (depending on which service level one opts for). It's comparable to Toyota's similar service (I forget the name).
      Overall, I believe GM provides better technology than many of its competitors in this segment. BTW, I used to drive Hondas for 30 years but switched (back) to GM 10 years ago and find their vehicles as reliable as any Honda or Toyota (at least the ones I've owned), if properly maintained.

    • @ravenjames3873
      @ravenjames3873 6 років тому

      as well as most cars. by the time new cars reach different dealerships, 4 grand will be knocked off the sticker price. and if the dealership has there own deals, you can get more than $4000 knocked off the sticker price. so if a vehicle originally cost $32.000, you could probably get it for $27.000. that's not bad for a full loaded car.

    • @leeg3784
      @leeg3784 5 років тому

      Not just that, you don't need the "Premier" level when LT trim will give you so much including a Sun/Nav package, confidence/convenience package, etc for $28K, competition is in the $30K's for those combined options. Only missing thing would be leather seats and for $1500 I can add those with a lifetime warranty at dealer. No need to go up $5K more to get those.

    I have reservations about the reliability of GM products but, the 2018 Equinox has some smart looking body lines. I have never seen any of the manufacturers produce a Turbocharger that lasts past 100k. That is why Toyota is staying away from Turbochargers.

If you buy the LT with every option with incentives that comes to just under $28,000. Their are subcompact suvs that are more expensive. Besides this vehicle is just coming out, so give it a few months and the discounts will be even better.

      The 2018 Equinox 1.5 TAWD is $21K on cars dot com where the CR-V is $5,000 more at $26K. Not sure if it is worth $5,000 than the Chevy but the bank set Honda residuals won't catch that discount within a lease period. The older CR-V L 2.4l AWD is still $2,000 more expensive with lower output engine and less features that the 2018 Equinox 1.5T AWD.

    i don't like all of that guessing about fuel economy, braking distances, acceleration or towing capacity. instead of rushing to make a video...test it thoroughly, then give the results for Only the model(s) tested.

      Chevy is offering up to $4,000 off so that brings this top of the line model down to where the competition is, if not lower. If you buy the LT with every option with incentives that comes to just under $28,000. Their are subcompact suvs that are more expensive. Besides this vehicle is just coming out, so give it a few months and the discounts will be even better.

      @paxtonwilliams8556 7 років тому

      You and I are probably alike in that I will never generally ask for less power, but I suspect those figures for the diesel engine to be fine. Remember, this vehicle shrunk in size, lost 400 lbs and is now solidly a compact SUV again. The figures (especially mpg) should be class competitive for the hypermiling types cross shopping the hybrid competitors.

    As someone who has the last gen, I don't like this new Equinox. I bought my 2011 specifically because it was an in between size. It was not as small as the rav4, but not as big as a Pilot. As far as being under powered, that was the norm for my generation too. I would stay away from these GM turbos though. Anyone who is interested in this vehicle should do some research into the motors. They have been having a lot of issues with the turbos blowing the pistons out of wack or the rings going bad. As far as the diesel option why would anyone buy a diesel in this size segment? Diesel is way more expensive then gasoline with no benefits for this size of vehicle. Let's also hope that GM isn't lying about the diesel economy numbers or emissions like several brands have already done.

    Why is that a larger Vehicle like the Jeep Cherokee(European v.) Diesel can get 45mpg and North America gets the nurfed versions of diesels all the time, I mean 32mpg is a joke even though he said it may be 26mpg which is lower btw. I guess ill find out when the EPA releases their numbers.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide

      There are a few reasons, but the most important is that the American gallon is 25% smaller so that has to be taken into account. Secondly the measurement process is quite different and the American process tends to be more realistic.

    I currently have a 2018 1.5T as a dealer loaner as my 2011 Equinox is in the shop. The car is a complete dud...sticker is at 26k and no power liftgate, remote start, no power driver or passenger seats, no satellite radio...the fact this vehicle gets closer to 40k with options as laughable...The drive in my opinion is terrible...the 1.5 is sluggish and a gas hog...you have to keep the pedal down to get the car moving...and the auto off is permanent...this car should top at 30k tops...this is a hard pass and GM has lost itself I no longer recognize the company

    Terrible 0-60 times. 9.5 seconds? Isn't the CVT, 1.5L turbo on the Honda CRV 7.5-8 seconds to 60? 136 HP Diesel Turbo option? I would hate to get behind one of those merging onto a freeway. I would guess 0-60 in and AWD would be ~13-14 seconds at least. Typical modern GM, looks decent but they cheap out under the hood.
