2018 Chevrolet Equinox 2.0T Review and Road Test - In 4K

  • For 2018 Chevy decided to completely redesign their compact CUV to compete head-on with the CR-V. To that end we have a standard turbo engine in the base model, an optional high-output 2.0L turbo if you want more shove and a 1.6L turbo diesel if fuel sipping is more your thing. In addition to fuel economy and power, engineers also targeted handling dynamics and the result is a CUV that can go toe to toe with Ford's Escape when the road starts to bend. My only complaint with the Equinox so far has been pricing. GM's usual pattern of MSRPs that are at or above the competition but actual on-the-lot pricing that beats the competitors seems to be playing out with the Equinox as well. This makes comparisons difficult but should result in a better deal for someone looking to give this Chevy a spot in their driveway. But can it beat the CR-V?

I have this 2018 Equinox, mid level trim with the AWD 1.5 engine. Have had it about a year now and put about 16,000 miles on it, no regrets. Handles well in weather and snow, is quiet to drive. I average about 31mpg. My best mpg is grieving about 55 to 60mph, at that speed I get around 35mpg. I see people state the auto shut off is a deal breaker. It works seamlessly. And I’ve learned if you double bump the brake just before you can to a complete stop, the engine will continue to run uninterrupted. I drove a Toyota Solara before buying this Equinox, and have never regretted getting it.

Compared Equinox to Rav, CRV and CX5. Chevy had same options for a lot less and a remote car start which is an extra charge for all the other 3 mentioned. Only thing about the Equinox is if you don't get the Premier trim the cloth seats are really hard. Never sat in a Chevy that was so uncomfortable. I'm looking at same trim you have. Are you still happy?

Whereas I found the Escape chintzy and the CR-V too radical, I actually find myself liking the Equinox. The 1.5T is the leave it motor - either go up to the 2.0T for its power & 9spd gearbox or the 1.6TD for its hybrid-busting MPG figures. Chevy has managed to up the quality of their products from exterior to interior, and the Chevy myLink infotainment system is surprisingly good to use. My complaint is same as yours - most of the amenities are reserved on the Premier trim and option packages, and adding them all makes the Chevy price almost match that of a BMW X1 or Audi Q3. However GM tends to offer huge incentives on their dealer lots which hopefully would make the pricing more inline with rivals when it comes time to sign.

Alex the Kia Niro needs to be mentioned in this segment. It's front drive only. In the LX trim the PHEV with the Federal tax credit delivers 26 miles of all electric range for about $24k. Over 50mpg overall. These are major considerations for many buyers.

The auto stop/start actually is defeatable.. you put the transmission in manual mode when you start the car and set the most gears you want the transmission to use using the plus and minus buttons. It’s not as convenient as say a dash button (preferred), but it can be done. With that said, I am surprised that the stop/start on my 2018 Terrain isn’t that intrusive like other systems out there and you get used to it.. it saves you about 1 mpg in mixed driving.

I just posted this else where in this thread, but will do here, so it's open to all and not reply to one specific guys post..
I was/am the same opinion, and I went to an equinox forum, and found out if you put the shifter in L, and then click the gear select up to 9 (highest gear), and just leave it as is as you drive around, it still works like a normal Drive mode and shifts on it's own (no higher revs or anything, just the same), cause you selected highest gear, instead of just driving off in L, ... and while in this mode, the engine stop feature seems to be disengaged and will not turn off, when you come to a stop... Yes, I tested this myself and it works... also, if the A/C is on, it will not shut down when come to a stop.. and if very cold out, it also doesn't turn off, so you can keep the climate control doing it's thing..... this trick is enough for me to leave this car on my short list... on hwy driving, no worries, anyways, except if in a traffic jam.. and then back to using this trick.

Cherokee is a better vehicle. I have both. The dash on the equinox is peeling already, and the radiator had to be replaced in the equinox at 22,000 miles. My 2016 Cherokee 3.2 has 77,000 miles only had to replace the windshield washer stock. No other issues.

Fall Guy I almost bought the KL trail hawk but couldn’t get over the PTU and tranny problems. Even thought about pulling the fuse and driving FWD but mpg and big v6 in 2wd turned me off the idea. The seats are fantastic. Went with NOX. How could the radiator go wrong? Wasn’t intercooler? I always put wire guards in front grill nowadays to stop rocks making those numerous dents on the fins. Put on dash mat as well. The NOX AWD is good and prefer on demand for mpg and uneven tire wear worries. I’m surprised your dash is peeling becos I tried heaps of powerful solar panels on the dash and none worked, even big 50w ones, and so I thought the UV lamination or polarisation was far too strong. Are you sure it’s not chemicals that you used? Some disinfectants (e.g., wet wipes) I find break down plastic over time. I only clean with water or diluted dishwashing liquid. I remember some plastics in BMW reacted very badly with some hand lotion chemicals.

just toss it into manual shift mode shift up the gears to 6 or 9 and then it will stay in that mode but shift normally and it does not use the auto on stop then. Actually I have been getting use to the stop start but I agree it has to wear over time. Pulled up to a high end volvo other day it has the start stop to I heard it when light turned green. Anyway for anyone who has the equinox just use the manual mode shit to top gear and its all set. It shifts normally then and over rides the stop start! Hope this helps someone.

Love your videos Alex, however for gas engines I wish you'd mention what type of has is recommended by the manufacturer. For example, 1.5L they recommend regular unleaded, but the 2.0L they recommend premium unleaded, I believe.

  • @tomtalker2000

Where GM failed is pulling the 2.0L in favor for the smaller 1.5L engine. Now if you want one with a 2.0 you have too look at a 2018-2020 with low miles. Which honestly folks are out there if you look online and can have it shipped too you. But GM really dropped the ball cutting out this engine altogether. Most manufacturers offer folks engine choices. And they could have kept this engine as a paid upgrade or had it exclusive too the Premier trim. Now were stuck with a measly 1.5 that only puts out 175hp and 203lbs torque. Too me that's not staying competitive with what Honda is offering in the CRV. Or what Nissan did in taking a HUGE gamble with a 3cyl turbo getting far more HP & Torque then all these other vehicles. And that goes for the GMC Terrain as well. This engine just doesn't cut it for the size of these vehicles. The 2.0L 252hp and 260lbs torque was the perfect pairing for both the Equinox and Terrain. Granted it may not have been the most successful seller over the 1.5L but to cut it altogether was a HUGE mistake. And if you read any Chevy forum online you can read ALL the frustration other folks share about this issue. Bring it back GM & GMC people deserve choices...!!!

I test drove and hate the auto stop start thing and found a guy posted somewhere, that if you drive this by putting it right away right down to the L gear.. it doesn't do the stop start engine thing.. and good thing, by just leaving it L gear, it still shifts up and down normally if just leave it there, without revy too high... and it somehow seems to override that stupid stop engine thing.. so I went and tested this and it works.. Just put in L and forget about, drive around like it's D and works the same on it's own.... Just remember to push it ALL the way back up to P, and not leav it it in D or N by mistake by habit of pushing up 2 positions and have your car roll away .. haha.. because of this, it's back on my short list of cars.. but still kinda wish it had a locking rear diff.. option awd, like my current Santa Fe.

Feel like GM doesn't give the compact segment enough dedications though, as it has long been their worse segment, while comparably, European and Asian counterparts are known for their small vehicles. This might also due to that except North America and China, nearly all major auto markets left has a strong preference on small vehicles and large vehicles are nearly non-existent. GM may also want to leave room for GMC, Buick and Cadillac, which are usually perceived as a higher level but are facing more stress on sales. But Cruze & Equinox is doing pretty well, perhaps better than GM's original expectation? Hope GM and Chevy dedicate more to their smaller vehicles, no reason to spare any effort on this perfect chance!

Edysin Simon - I was able to defeat the start/stop on my 2014 Malibu by unplugging the wire harness at the hood latch. If the computer thinks the hood isn't properly latched start/stop didn't work. Kind of a bummer to have to do on a brand new $25-$32k vehicle though. You can also easily prevent the engine stop by how you apply the brake pedal at the stop line. Chevy explains this, so its intentional.

Motor Trend handling data can be very reliable in comparing handling and braking of tested vehicles.
MT figure eight test measure not only grip but accleration, braking power, along with shock dampening, sway bars, spring rates. It's the recipe that has the 2018 GMC Terrain/Equinox one full second ahead of the 2018 CX-5 in that test. You see, the Japanese cook the books in making a lightweight, small, and great handling cuv that journalist rave about and get fuel economy as a result. When the buying public review the Mazda it is loud and rough riding and a turn off with just a ride around the block. So 2018 Mazda adds to the CX-5 missing sound deadening and adds heavier acoustic glass. Now the suspension is taxed with sway bar and spring rates from the previous updates along with shocks that need revalving.
Braking performance has suffered with the extra weight with longer stopping from 60 than a 2018 Terrain by over 10 feet. And if you want to compare real world economy, fuelly.com-which are owners reporting, has the new 2018 Equinox 1.5T besting the CX-5. Sorry to burst your Japanese bubble but most everyone is on the same playing field today and many have passed them up and especially on the cost to buy front thanks to dealerahips advertising on places like cars.com. It is public perception that lags because of you and the journalist want to protect their internet clicks and keep inflated resdiuals as the prices are higher to buy than non-Japanese, negating any excellent resdiuals value. The auto auctions thank you guys. This is especially the case for the Honda CR-V.
Regarding pricing and value the 2018 Terrain and CX-5 are dead even today and 3 year, 36,000 miles from now. The Subaru is $2,000 less today and $2,000 less in the same time period. This all based on info gathered from cars.com. It favors the Terrain if I used 2017 values as it is an out going model and the best deal here.
Though the base 2018 Terrain doesn't have dual zone climate control it does have rear seat upper vents. The Mazda does not until you go up to the Touring model. The Terrain SLE has dual zone and the CX-5 Touring has rear seat vents starting the last two years or so. Both cars are the same price on cars.com Early Mazda models do not have rear seat venting.
The 2018 Honda CR-V is the most expensive at $2,000 more than comparable 2018 Equinox. The Honda still offers the old 2.4l and is $5,000 more than a 2017 Equinox 2.4l. It is just over priced at all levels. And at 3 years, 36,000 miles later the CR-V cost less than a Equinox. Which means the more expensive, new Honda has dropped more in value than the Equinox.
The Terrain 1.5T receives the 9-speed transmission and has not been tested. Only the Equinox 1.5t 6-speed has been timed.

It may have scored a respectable 71 dB on your 50 MPH cabin noise test, but I gotta say it sounded significantly louder than the competition judging from the audio in this video. It sounds as though there's a wider variety of noises, which I think it more bothersome than absolute noise level.

    • @davidfreeman3083
      @davidfreeman3083 6 років тому

From my experience owning the EXACT model, it does has excellent engine, transmission and overall handling/ride, at the price of being extremely noisy though. When I use ignition (remote start), and/or put it on idle, the car produces a significant amount of noise though. It can at least be heard from the other side of the garage. Also, when you shift transmission into Park or break until it stops, you sometimes hear a significant sound too. First I thought it was just for American Vehicles, until I see that my friend's Jeep Grand Cherokee is a lot quieter when idling and ignition. Don't know exactly what happens at 50MPH, but I suggest that the noise maybe overwhelmingly mechanical other than environmental. I think this car separates outside noises pretty well but the mechanics are really, really loud.

Does the steering feel like last years gen, like does it feel somewhat numb. Idk I like sport type steering. My Impala has the best steering probably in its class. But I have a 2011 Impala so the steering in the 2018 Impala must have the magnetic steering.

But anyways, American vehicles generally possesses a stronger, blunter design language that makes them seem a lot larger. GM is pretty aggressive on that for their recent models, examples include: New Chevy Cruze, Malibu, Equinox, Traverse, and definitely, Cadillac CT6.

I think you are going to find these small turbos won't hold up and will be very expensive to repair. I would suggest getting rid of the car around 60,000 miles before costs start adding up.

Honda is not the best SUV in this size they have been having lots of problems with their 1.5 engines! Nissan SUVs have a lot of transmission problems! Chevy equinox is way overpriced when it's fully loaded. Best SUV this size is the Mazda CX 5 which is just as reliable as Toyota as Mazda now uses asin transmissions like Toyota and Mazda offers more features than any other SUV this size including heads up display!

Test drove this yesterday and the interior is severely lacking. Such a let down, because it's a phenomenal drive. Couldn't imagine any instance in which you'd have to floor it, I was at 80 before I knew it. But that interior... I prefer cloth, but the material in here is horrible and the leather isn't much better. The seats aren't very comfortable (the lumbar's great, though) and the steering wheel is hard in a way I've never noticed in a car before. The overall feel of the interior is Cheap, when it's not exactly a cheap car. I wish I could put the Chevy turbo engine into the new Santa Fe, because THAT was a nice car. The acceleration just wasn't as nice as the Equinox (but I also forgot about the sport mode and didn't try it).
SO disappointed they kept this crappy interior in the 2019

The reviews of real-world mass-market cars is what makes Alex on Autos superior to the others, which tend to focus way too much on enthusiast/performance cars. For the typical family looking for their next car, there is no better resource. I can't count how many times I've referred family and friends to AoA reviews, which in all cases have been extremely helpful.
