MASTODON Colony of Birchmen Reaction and Dissection The Decomposer Lounge
#mastodonmusic #coloneyofbirchmen #reactions
Just to echo what others have said, “The Last Baron” is incredible and worth all the hype it’s gotten in the comments.
Amen brother! It's insane how good it is.
Agreed
I came here to make this comment hahaha
Hearts Alive as well!
"Crack The Skye" into "The Last Baron"
I've already said this a couple of times but "The Last Baron" is a MUST from Mastodon. A progressive masterpiece!
Agreed… Too add, Crack the Skye is absolute brilliance
The Last Baron is def a must i agree 100%
The Last Baron is so freaking good. After that he should give a try to Jaguar God too!
I can second this. Crack the skye was just a masterpiece all together. Listen to it from front to back. That would be an awesome reaction.
The Last Baron is an absolute MUST
Blood Mountain is probably the album I have listened to more than any other. It cannot die, it cannot disappoint. Mastodon are the real deal. They did a great cover of ZZ’s Just Got Paid
Siberian Divide, Sleeping Giant, Circle Of Sasquatch, This Mortal Soil and Capillarian Crest are my top songs off that album. Honorable mention goes to Hand Of Stone. Oh and of course Colony Of Birchmen. So pretty much the whole album lol
rapeman does ‘just got paid’ amazingly.
It's their best sounding album IMO. It's so thick and aggressive and every instrument sounds great.
This was the first album that got me into mastodon and still to this day is my favorite album of theirs (yes, even over CTS). It has such a unique and timeless sound that their other albums just can’t quite reach. I was supposed to see mastodon at bonnaroo this weekend but unfortunately the festival got canceled!
I honestly can't pick a favorite. I started with Blood Mountain in 06 but Leviathan and Crack the Skye sound completely different yet completely on par with one another. That said I'm jonesing for the new album. I was so hyped when I heard David Botrill was producing. He produced one of my all time favorite albums.
Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age does the haunting vocals in the chorus. Do anything off Blood Mountain. This album is a masterpiece.
i hear a lot of people saying that, but it's my least favorite mastodon album. to me, crack the skye is their magnum opus..
@JAY AIR He also reads a "fan letter" to Mastodon on the CD version's hidden track. It's very silly.
Dude, ive been listening to this song for 10+ years and had no idea that was josh homme but now its painfully obvious. Thank you!
Leviathan
Crack The Skye
Blood Mountain

OMRTS
@@Mari000 Would the Hunter be higher up if it didn't sound like shit? Production's weak on that one.
Mastodon writes the most badass riffs of any metal band. Period. Extremely talented guitar players, their records are FILLED with amazing guitar parts.
Yeah hof, arguably mastodon wouldn't exist without them. You can hear a lot of bill's inspiration.
@@jayflach3408 100 percent. I should check them out.
@@micolashscream9003 Matt Pike never recorded a bad riff.
Mastodon is one of the weirdest and most fantastic bands of all time all 4 members are fantastically skilled
Bran Daylor could easily front and sing for a band or play drums in Mastodon he does both
Troy Sandrrs could sing as a front man or play bass in Mastodon he dkes both
Brent Hinds coyld sing or lead gutar or banjo etc in a band in Mastodon he does ALL OF THAT listen to megolodon for the country banjo riffs
Bill Kelliher is a massively skilled gutarist
Mastodon is awesome
Don't forget. Bills got some good pipes too. A full band of musical killers
Bills Vocals are my favorite but he doesn't seem to lay it down anymore.
Can't get enough Mastodon reactions. The Last Baron and Hearts Alive are two songs from them that you should strongly consider.
Came here to request Hearts Alive.
@@CJChild Hearts Alive is as good as it gets
Mastodon-The Last Baron, The Czar or Jaguar God! Trust me my man!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
yes, yes, and YES!!!
Jaguar God is wild. It reminds me of A Trick of the Tail era Genesis in a weird way.
Indeed.
Please do a video on the band Elder. Reflections of a Floating World is one of the most impressive stoner rock/psychedelic albums ever recorded. It takes you to a lot of places mentally. Not enough people talk about them and I think you'd get a kick out of it.
My fav band, love learning their riffs. Also recommend Weedpecker, Grotto, Causa Sui and Camel Driver, Samsara Blues Experiment and Earthless if you like Elder
Just checked out some of their songs. Wow, why haven't of heard of them before, so good.
@@archaeorobbo What are some of your favorite riff/songs of theirs that you play?
@@SPMusic18 I learnt the dead roots stirring album, Some of Lore and Sanctuary from ROAFW. Beauty with Elder is all their songs have great riffs. I call them Sabbath infused mountain fight soundtracks. But I enjoy playing all the opening riffs off DRS. I personally have a lot of fun on Knot because it's a fun progression. And spirit at Aphelion is a lot of fun. But nah cant go wrong really
Elder is my jams! I got Reactor Core to do a few reactions to them, he loved Blind, Compendium, and Dead Roots Stirring. Still, I think they will be a sleeper hit for the masses. Their loss. Nick DeSalvo is a riff genius, I love teaching the opening to Sanctuary to my students. And who doesn't like playing in drop C? Reflections is probably my favorite album all-around, but I have all their tracks on repeat daily and rarely skip. I hope to get all their awesome vinyls someday, I only have the Gold & Silver Sessions so far.
MORE MASTODON!!!!
YES. Such a good album. This was my first album I got into by this band, and they only get BETTER from here on out. Crack the Skye is my absolute favorite album and then the newest one they put out in 2017 which is Emperor of Sand. If I am not mistake, I believe this song won a grammy.
This was actually nominated but did not win, same with "Curl of the Burl" but they eventually won for "Sultan's Curse"
Older people who enjoy challenging music from across the spectrum of sound are rare, and thus, very cool. You deserve the subs.
As for the video subject matter; this is actually my favourite song on Blood Mountain.
Mastodon are sooooooo catchy. Great melodies. Gone awayyy, my heart's gone awayyyyy... amazing!
That shit never gets a lot, such an amazing part
SO pumped that 'Colony of Birchmen' was covered - this is the song that REALLY transitioned me into heavier metal that I'd previously found a little difficult to get into. I was pretty addicted to these fast paced driving songs, the faster side of stoner or sludge metal. After MTV(RIP) bombarded me with this music video in high school, I finally listened to a full Mastodon album front to back(Leviathan) and "got" it(gotta be one of the best major modern bands at constructing albums).
Would LOVE to see another really significant band for me around this time, and their breakthrough single...
Hurt - 'Rapture'
...but it's GOTTA be the 5:40 long version; the 4:18 radio edit is a total butcher job, offensively so
Wow not many people mention hurt....that whole album is awesome and rapture is one of the better songs
@@brandongrayson456 Yea man, Hurt was(and still is) one of my favorite and most influential bands after listening to Vol 1 beginning to end first time. Heard 'Rapture' on the radio and had to find that album, and it just changed how I thought about constructing music, much like NIN 'The Fragile' did 5 or 6 years earlier.
Been tossing some comments for them out there to different 'reactors' because I think the biggest problem Hurt had was just getting heard in the first place, would like to see new people hearing their stuff.
@@RyTrapp0 volume one and two are awesomely good albums...I was 17 when both those albums came out. Even back then no one knew of them. Dr heir writing and construction of an album is where they shine. No one in the band is a show off which is why I think not many know of them, everyone wants fast heavy and in your face. No one cares about constructing a solid album anymore it's all about the singles
I'd drifted away from heavier music for a while until this album made me realise metal could be complex, intelligent and emotional all at the same time. It's a true masterpiece and there's so much in it I don't think I'll ever tire of it
If you plan on doing any special milestone episodes, watching you react to the full album Crack The Skye by Mastodon would be incredible!
Great reaction/track breakdown, as usual. Hearts Alive would be my recommendation for future Mastodon content. I think it's their most impressive composition, and a personal favorite. Beyond that, I'd also be interested in seeing your take on the evolutionary step they took with Crack the Skye.
Absolutely great melody, great vocal harmony, great bass. The song has a definite pull to it, you feel like you are moving forward. Mastodon kick ass.
This is the song that introduced me to Mastodon (thanks Rock Band) and I've been a fan ever since. You need to do a full album reaction on Patreon of Crack the Skye or at the very least, do Last Baron or The Czar form that album
You can hear Josh Homme from QotSA in the chorus :) love this song
MASTODOOOOON!!!! … enjoy your reactions, more Mastodon, please.
Awesome stuff man :) Mastodon are one of the most underated modern rock bands.
I think if they'd of formed in the 80's they'd be Metallica recognised right now.
Gojira Gift of Guilt please, you'll love it.
everyone is suggesting great Mastodon stuff but i think you GOTTA listen to "Capillarian Crest"
8:11 fantastic reaction, totally goobering on that bass run
4:53 with the eye shift back and right is exactly the correct response to how the beat shifts
Impossible not to headbang when that riff comes back 🤘🏻
Praying for Crystal Mountain by Death eventually :)
More Mastodon please. "The Czar" is one I've asked for before... but "The Last Baron" is also quite awesome.
Divinations is one of my all time faves by these dudes. The whole Crack the Skye album is an experience.
Love ya Geebz. makes my day that your diggin my favorite band!
Yessss. So glad to see more Mastodon on here! Thanks Geebz!
“HUNT FOR OGRES AND DWARVES! LION SLICER!!!”
This song is phenomenal, and Mastodon has MANY worthwhile songs to use for your show.
Hoping for more Coheed and Cambria, too!
You’re doing great, Geebz!
I have to pound the table for “Hearts Alive” by them. It’s a long twisting instrument focused song that I think would be perfect for a review on your channel given your background. Would love to hear about the more technical things driving the song that a casual listener like myself may not understand.
Awesome choice, gotta check out The Last Baron!!! Love your work man!
You can really hear the influence that Josh Homme had on this song.
he did those backing vocals right?
@@jason78981 wait no way
@@snakeson_aplane I looked it up and it’s true. I didn’t know that either!
yea it adds a lot to the song
I appreciate the way you add into the songs and actually impart a bit of wisdom to help us appreciate them better. Keep rocking dude 🤘
My Man this is awesome. You should decompose a track from Call of the Mastodon, like Battle at Sea or Deep sea Creature. It's just nuts.
Another vote for Hearts Alive from me. It's a 13-minute epic that fittingly wraps-up its album's journey. Definitely a song that any metal connoisseur should experience.
4 members includes 2 guitarists and 3 vocalists that variably sing different parts (and or do duets and triplets for serious harmonies).
As mentioned prior Josh from QOTSA's appearance in the hook gives this track an accessability that brought plenty to the altar
Holy shit I had no idea xD during the first verse I was like...never really thought about it before but this sounds like a heavy QOTSA. Then Josh came in and I was like waaaiiit a minute now, I know this voice..
How did I miss this!!! I think 've been checking out your content since a few weeks into your journey. I've loved Mastodon since first hearing them in 2001. Their new album is a must.
Very good video! I love how you also dissect the mix as well.
This song was from their proggiest album by far
Mastodons first 4 albums that are part of the elemental theme are all unforgettable
Great album, brilliant song.
Animals as Leaders just released a new single, Monomyth. You gotta decompose it!
Agreed, it's been like half a decade since they put out an album
One of my favorite Mastodon songs. Nice.
Yay, you chose a Blood Mountain song!
Glad you did mastodon but you should have done Czar.
Appreciate your content, you're the best. Thank you
More Mastodon!!! The Czar! Or the new songs pushing the tides and Teardrinker
Awesome! “Crack the Skye” or “Divinations” would be awesome!
one of my fav mastodon tracks, good choice
+ to "Curl of the Burl" & "Oblivian" & "Motherload"
Hey Geebs! Would love to see you come back to Mastodon's 'Jaguar God' soon. Keep on truckin', love the channel!
Yes 👍
Blood mountain is an amazing album!
Fun fact, the title of this track is an homage to Colony of Slippermen by Genesis, one of Brann Dailor's favorite bands
This song is what got me into Mastodon and maybe even metal in general, as I wasn't much into the genre until I listened to this a few years ago (even though I've been listening to Tool and some Alt- or Post-Metal-Bands before). You should definetly give "Hearts Alive" a try. One of their best and most epic tracks. Also, I love your videos and your reactions, even though I'm not a big fan of reaction videos. It's great to see how honest and "down to earth" you are with your reactions.
Haken - Crystallised please ! :)
Yesss! Haken at their best!
I hadn't listened to this record in years and then in just the last two weeks I've been re-listening to it again
Their song Divinations is a personal favorite of mine. This song was released in 2006 btw.
You need to check out The Last Baron and also The Czar, 2 amazing songs from a great album!
Hey Geebz, you gotta do Oblivion by Mastodon! The studio version, not music video version. That would be awesome! Aloha! 🤙
Would love to see you do Hearts Alive for your one year celebration
Mastodon - The Czar
Aviations - Outliers (Retrospect)
🤘
One of my favourites! 👍
Hey everyone! Have a nice day!
Geebz I recommend that you check out Low Lands by Gojira (amazing moody track), or just more Gojira in general ;)
Low Lands is the best song off of Magma to me, such a great way to close out the album.
Think he did Born in winter and amazonianz
@@jmpsthrufyre he did, and a few other of their songs, but I feel like there's nothing like to much Gojira :D
@@JaySay that's a good take, myself I can't point out my favourite one, even one from each album is a big task in my book
Love the subtle Cheech and Chong nod... ,🤙🤙🤙
Fuck yeah! One of my favorites!
AWW YEAH! Rock band 2, anyone?!
That and guitar hero got me into such a diverse array of bands growing up.
Thanks for getting to more Mastodon, Geebz! Can't wait to see if you get to anything from _Once More Around the Sun_ next! (Ember City, maybe?)
Fantastic vid, Geebz, appreciate all you do, man! Awwwright!
I can highly recommend to check out:
Corpo Mente - Arsalein
and/or
Corpo Mente - Ort
more Mastodon please. Quintessence is a good dip into their amazing album Crack the Skye
My favorite mastadon song. Keeps my foot tapping all day
For your 30 day count down I would love to see you do either The Last Baron or Peace & Tranquillity. The Last Baron is a huge progressive epic and P&T is from their new album which has a pretty different vibe from the rest of their catalogue. Thanks for all you do man, love the channel!
I love these videos. Very likable guy, always entertaining and informative.
So glad you chose this song. First Mastodon song i ever heard and it pulled me in, now Blood Mountain is my favorite Mastodon album, and they're one of my favorite bands ever.
Love your t-shirt
This channel is growing faster than I can tell!
Request #21 for Devin Townsend Project's "Planet of the Apes"
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 MORE MASTODON, SIR!!!!!!!!
fun fact, cant remember if you reacted to any Mars Volta but Cedric( vocalist) and Ikey(keyboards) from Volta helped with this album and feature on a couple tracks in it as well.
Absolutely love to see people have had similar visceral reactions to these songs as I did. The Last Baron is an amazing song and I see it getting all kinds of love here in the comments, it pulls at you like this song does, straight at your soul. The entire album Crack the Skye is a journey. They are brilliant musicians.
This is the song that introduced me to Mastodon so many years ago, I remember seeing the music video on MTV and hearing it on the radio. I distinctly remember getting it stuck in my head after around 5 listens and being hooked from there.
thanks for doing this song. i requested it a while ago, so thank you. and i agree “ Last Baron” is incredible.
This Mortal Soil off of Blood Mountain is the jam.
Geebz have showed me SO MANY GOOD BANDS!! Thank YOU
This is one of my favorite bands. I'd love seeing more of your reactions to their songs.
New subscriber, I think the thing that set you apart right from the start that you're not doing the f****** flavor of the week like every other reactor does..as a prog snob I'm definitely enjoying the breakdowns
STONER rock suggestions:
1. Witchrider-Wind up
2. Kryptograf-New Colossus
3. Big Scenic Nowhere- Hidden Wall

Two notes please, first the songs above are in the wider area of stoner/ hard scene. Lastly I haven't included obvious band choices. Thanks🖖
The Synth ambience is a huge theme in the Crack the Skye album. The whole thing feels like an extension of some of the Heavy Metal movie storylines, but darker and more emotionally resonant. The Czar and the Last Baron are conceptual masterpieces.
So happy right now!!! MASTODON!!!!
The Czar or Divinations next! (Or The Last Baron, but there are already enough people asking for that :P )
more mastodon please. specifically, if you have the patience, 'hearts alive'
Josh Homme from Queen's of the stone age is actually featured on this song for backing vocals
Hearts Alive and The Czar my dude
Give the people what they want 😀
PS great work
I listened to this album in full for the first time recently and just learned a couple riffs from it today. I go on UA-cam and you post this today! Pretty crazy!
You should check out Capillarian Crest from the same album. Absolutely mind blowing!
Anything from Crack The Skye!!! Divinations, Quintessense, The Czar, The Last Baron…
Would also love to see Stargasm reacted to!
Lol Cheech and Chong shirt lovin' it
30 days recycling the best bands: The last Baron! Thanks Geebz
All Hail Mastodon!!
