To the Question at 17:58. I think it's about the difference between intention and action. The POV character believes he is saving the person he is killing, so when describing his thoughts it's calm and soothing, but when describing his actions its harsh and aggressive.
I think its the entire song that goes aggressive not just the voice: that voice fits the part of the song. You simply have to sing like that on top of those riffs. When the song goes more chill you dont
6:20 I met them by a coincidence at a bar in Oslo (called Elm Streets, which sadly is no longer around), when I was together with my bandmates at the time, and they were all over Mikael, about how much I looked like him (according to them). Kind of embarrassing but also cool at the same time. Happy birthday by the way!
Opeth have added to metal the intellectuality and class that was needed. Seventies prog rock generation meets with extreme metal descendants, in a mix that expand the boundaries of rock music and leaves hope and space for the new things to come.
Dan, thank you for introducing Doug to Opeth! As soon as I found this channel I knew you'd love Opeth, and had been waiting and hoping for you to get around to them. I was so happy when you finally reacted to them the first time. They've got so many incredible songs in their catalogue that it takes quite a while to get to them all.
A masterpiece. For me, this tune is among Opeth's top 5 best songs. It has an incredible development, and the ending is from another planet. Great pick!!!!
My favorite thing about Opeth is the way they structure their chord voicing to emphasize the dissonant intervals in their harmonies. I almost never play Am anymore without a 9th on it after learning some of their music.
I don't know how many times i have replayed your Opeth reactions again and again. I am sooooo happy for this. Happy Birthday man and we love DJ Dan too!
Opeth is a special band. It’s very fun to relive some first listens through the reaction. “That’s nuts!” definitely went through my mind way back when. 😂 Happy birthday, Doug!
The clean section at 21:30 is originally done by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. Him and Mikael are good friends and have made great music together. Maybe this extra vocal adds to the personas described in the song
Deliverance is the one song i was introduced to Opeth by a good friend which is a drummer. Played me bits of Lamb of God and and Deliverance on drums and i asked them what that song was. And so, today, Opeth is at the top of the bands i listen to, still.
Actually Mikael is a very humble person about his voice. You are absoulutely right he has a beautiful voice, but when he first started the band he though that he didn't know how to sing so he started to scream when they needed vocals with of coure a very big Death Metal influence. You can clearly see his progress as a clean singer too. You have reacted the songs like To Bid You Farewell and The Drapery Falls from their early works. His voice is almost naive and not confident. But in songs like The Wilde Flowers or Moon Above Sun Below he is more confident and had a long way of clean singing. Him wanting to sing cleanly but also having one of the best harsh vocals out there is what gave Opeth its unique sound.
Great choice, happy birthday! Hope you enjoyed a little face melting beauty as a gift from Opeth to you! Love your videos, glad to see them make an appearance, hope you enjoyed the experience
I have seen Opeth perform that live, and being in the front row of a small club made it even better. The syncopation at the end just pounds into your body and a fantastic way to end the show
Happy birthday Doug, thank you for your videos brother. I can tell my ear is getting better just by hearing you explain the theory behind what my favorite musicians do. Thank you sir 🙏🙏🙏
Opeth deserves the attention of a classical composer. It’s wonderful to see them getting the respect they deserve and attracting a new generation of fans
Can confirm opeth has been closing with Deliverance more often than not for like 20 years. I saw them the first time in '05 in a crummy little club in Seattle and they were amazing. They and meshuggah are the bands that i will drop everything to see when they are in town. Hevy Devy too.
Happy Birthday Sir. It's great reaction. I like DJ Dan's choice. I'm happy that you not need to "protection" to listen to more heavy music. Take care and stay safe.
It honestly surprises me how you haven't heard this Opeth classic yet. One of their very best! Just goes to show that you're always only scratching the surface of what artists have to offer!
Happy B-Day Doug! I hope you have a great one and many more spins around the sun! Great to see DJ Dan and hear his insight. Great track to react to today.
Happy birthday dude! Love your reactions. Your music theory knowledge really adds another level in relation to other reaction vids. I am also in awe of your perfect pitch! Love that! 🙌
Happy Birthday! Oeth Covers: Robin Trowers' Bridge of Sighs is outstanding, as is Iron Maiden's Remember Tomorrow. For more Opeth originals: Need to get into the Still Life release: The Moor, Moonlaspe Vertigo, White Cluster, Godhead Lament, Serenity Painted Death.
I used to listen to a certain online metal radio station at work, and heard Deliverance and Bleak in the same day. I bought both albums that day, been an Opeth freak ever since.
For Death Metal Opeth are remarkably sophisticated. The chord progressions and subtle lead guitar is wonderful. Very romantic music fused with hard riffs. A pleasure overall been listening to Opeth 20 years now.
Big thanks Doug for turning me on to bands and music I would otherwise NEVER have heard. Really enjoy your theoretical breakdowns on all this music. Helps to remind me that ALL music can be analyzed whether the composer knows theory on not. Really helps give me a greater appreciation. Keep up the great work and don't let the bastards at UA-cam get you down!
Happy Birthday :D Damnation/Deliverance was recorded (planned) as a double album, record company said no .. how silly. Strange you haven't done Bleak yet. Get too it :) Watching the liveshow "Lamentations Live At Shepherd's Bush Empire 2003" (both albums in one go) is a must do for any Opeth fan. Why the growl? Death/Blackmetal bs . Its the music style. What Opeth do different is the mix.
This was the reaction I was waiting for! An absolute epic song, epic performance absolutely replicating the studio version. Incredible production. And an epic reaction to match this absolute gem of a work. Dan, would love if you can ask Doug to do a song from In Cauda Vanenum? I think it would make for a great reaction, such a musically progressive and interesting album. Soldier or Fortune is a great rec too! 👌🏼
Yesssssss it's the song. Apparently Åkerfeldt's grandma passed away during the recording of the albums. And not only did they have a different drummer, but also a different guitarist. My drummer friend for the longest time criticized the new drummer for not playing the ending bass drum pattern as well as the previous drummer. I think he's just fine, but I gotta say I really liked the previous drummer. What I really love about the last riff is how the drums turn the riff around in time, I think the riff isn't even and the drums play even. The constant cymbal keeping the 4 time and then the drum pattern turning around on the riff. And how there's like a pull and push with the response to the beat depending on where the guitar hits land. I'm a sucker for that type of stuff. And they signal it so well, I think I've never missed the abrupt ending despite there being like a minute of the same riff repeating trance like in a 13 minute song. Love it. The drum patterns in these twin records were just something really exciting, make me think of Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree. Same for the guitarist, Lindgren had amazing taste, really soft and jazzy rhythmic patterns and melodies, but Åkesson is a fantastic player too and has found his groove in the band. This song is super fun to play on guitar. All the tritone stacks and odd fingering patterns, really odd chord shapes and often playing open strings in the back of a regular chord making it sound really juicy. Especially in the riff that you really liked where they play B5 type of chord but let the open B and E strings ring, then drop the bass note to A but otherwise the same chord, then some fascinating odd chord forms following, like D5 with the 5 coupled in bass, then like A5 but the 5 replaced by minor 3 (C), B with minor 6 and the octave coupled with open B string and ending with Bb5 with 5 coupled in bass. All the 5 chords with the octave of course. Really unusual forms of chords in a rock song. At least according to their official tab book and they seem to be playing very similarly on stage. This song also plays a lot with 5 chords, bare octave interval "chords" and throwing the occasional tritonus in there as a spice. It's like taking your usual 5 chords in rock and putting all kinds of sweet changes all over the riffs to change it. And the groove of the time signatures and rhythms. Deliverance in general is such a good album with the nice changing between rough and kind. Some of my favourite acoustic patterns and clean vocals, and some of my favourite aggressive parts, some of my favourite solos. Bleak from Blackwater Park is another very Deliverance album like song. It's a good album as well for this colder "blue/grey" feeling music period. But Still Life, man that's a good theme album and the sounds and riffs and everything. They even used ebow, an electronic bow for guitar to create musical landscapes. And they really color coded the albums nicely to the feel of the music. Like Orchid has that purple/pink orchid, Morningrise is green (at least in my head, the picture itself is black and white), My Arms Your Hearse strong purple, Damnation and Deliverance very grey, Blackwater Park blue (in my head at least, another one of those very black and white but I feel like it's a foggy blue forest close to winter), Still Life red. I really feel those colors matching the emotions. It still surprises me how much Åkerfeldt plays solos. Like he always downplays his ability to play leads and solos or shred, but he's all over it in many songs. Regarding the vocals, it often feels to me like the growling or clean is based almost solely on the music behind the vocals. You'd think the softer parts had softer message and the harsher parts had harsher message, but I haven't had any real sense of noticing that with the lyrics ever. Tiny bit you didn't specifically mention was when the clean vocal section came where he sings higher and higher notes, while the lyrics go "soaring higher". Would be fun if you one day reacted to Ihsahn's Unhealer where Åkerfeldt feats in vocals, or Bloodbath where he used to sing. So different performances by him in all contexts. Also one of the "newer" Opeth songs, The Lotus Eater from Watershed (the band changed in my opinion after Ghost Reveries, that's why "new"). It had some of the weirdest hooks and surprises that I've heard, I couldn't believe my ears when that single came out at the advent of the new record that I had been waiting "are people allowed to do this?". I bet people are also waiting for Black Rose Immortal from Morningrise. That's the one song that people would love to hear live but it's so long that they rarely if ever play it. But people love it, it's so beautiful. The cover suggestions are great, I think Remember Tomorrow from Iron Maiden is really good one from Opeth though, better than original. And Bridge of Sighs from Robin Trower is unbelievable. Åkerfeldt and Wilson also made an album together as a duo project called Storm Corrosion back in 2012.
"It still surprises me how much Åkerfeldt plays solos. Like he always downplays his ability to play leads and solos or shred, but he's all over it in many songs." Not so much since Fred joined. I think previously that Peter was just "at Mikael's level" of lead playing (not notably superior to Mike), but Fred is a technical monster, far superior to any guitarist Mikael has played alongside, so he seems to let Akesson play most of the leads post- Ghost Reveries. He still plays his album solos live though.
I think this song is a total progressive metal masterpiece. Once you listen to it, it’s beyond obvious that these guys are absolute heavy-metal wizards.
I probably would not have heard of Opeth, except that Steven Wilson was involved with them , and I bought the Ghost Reveries album based on that association alone. It blew me away, and Opeth has been one of my favorite bands ever since. Mikael's growls made that style palatable to me, so here's a whole new style of metal to explore.
@@blppt Yeah, I know. At the time, Ghost Reveries was the latest album (and only one in stock), so I went with it, trusting Steven's taste in general. I was not disappointed. But I've gotta tell you, for a more or less folk/jazz guy, Ghosts of Perdition was a real eye opener. And ear opener.
HAPPI ROCKING BIRTHDAY , BROTHER DOUG, ABSOLUTELY LOVEYOUR REACTIONS ESP. 2 MY OLE PROG FAVORITES ;YES, TULL, GENESIS AND ELP , KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, YOU MAKE US’ALL SMILE….YOUR FAN , Jerry potente ,,,,OPETH , very interestin’
I came to them when the vocals cleaned up. It took a while to get into the early stuff as I was never a fan of growly vocals. This was one of the songs that won me over and now I love their earlier stuff. I saw them in Brixton supported by Pain of Salvation on the Heritage tour. THAT was an intense night, you should check out POS some time.
I used to hate cookie monster vocals too, but then I appreciated what Mikael was doing in "The Drapery Falls". Since then, I think Opeth was at their absolute prime when they had the contrasting clean and growl vocals in the same song. That being said, In Cauda Venenum is very, very good. (no growls of course).
Deliverance was my first Opeth song that I heard way back in 2009 when I was looking up the bands that were on the very first Prog Nation tour, which included Dream Theater, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and Three. It's such a great song, super happy to see this as the reaction.
Happy birthday Doug. They started in 89 as a death metal band then changed there style over the years. Listen to Ghost of Perdition. That song will make you a bigger fan of there’s. My band has played a few shows with them over the years. Amazing musicians
Oh Happy Birthday Doug! You're still ten years younger than me and I'm still rocking out, so fear not. Thanks for all the good tunes, and hope you have a great day. 🤘😎🎶
Last time I saw Opeth was in a NJ blacktop parking lot in July. I think I passed out from heat during the outro of this song and when I came to it was still going. 😄
This era of Opeth was a riff fest theatrical journey with the different points of view with the harsh/clean vocals and the use of the synth in a heavy band like this is done so well. Love this era of Opeth. Doug. Ask your brother if he is a fan of Ne Obliviscaris. If not, I think he would dig them quite a bit.
I have been waiting for another Opeth reaction. Happy birthday Doug!
Deliverance was a great choice. I think a lot of people would had this song in their Top 10 Opeth songs
It may be top 3 for me….but they have so many 😅
Top 10 songs period! Remember hearing this song on 'Sounds of the Underground" sometime around 2005.
Yeah, it's easily top 3
6:20 I met them by a coincidence at a bar in Oslo (called Elm Streets, which sadly is no longer around), when I was together with my bandmates at the time, and they were all over Mikael, about how much I looked like him (according to them). Actually this isn't Doug's first Opeth reaction
Happy birthday!
Deliverence is the song that made me interested in prog metal. Listened to it on repeat for a month. What an outro it has!
A masterpiece. For me, this tune is among Opeth's top 5 best songs.
It has an incredible development, and the ending is from another planet. Great pick!!!!

Their most played live song for good reason🤘
Opeth is a special band. It’s very fun to relive some first listens through the reaction. “That’s nuts!” definitely went through my mind way back when. 😂 Happy birthday, Doug!
Dan, thanks for showing your brother the way!! Doug, I have thoroughly enjoyed your breakdowns of all of the Opeth songs.

Happy birthday, Doug. Your first Opeth reaction brought me to your channel. Thanks to Dan for introducing Doug to Opeth
Master's Apprentice's next! Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday Doug! Opeth brought me to your channel and i've been a fan ever since!
My all time fav band, there's no one else like opeth, they are their own music genre and play what they want. So good.
They are truly a gem of a band the writing and orchestration of their music is awesome, saw them in New Orleans 2024 was perfection!
Congratulations. Live long and prosper. May the force be with you.🎉
This is one of the very best bands of our time. I'm glad to see Dan convert his brother into an Opeth fan.
Need to have a look at Katatonia now. Good friends with Opeth and Steven Wilson. Anything off the Great Cold Distance!

My favorite video this week. Go Nevada. In Reno. First Opeth song was "When" for me. 1999ish. Opeth is still my favorite. Happy Birthday.
Happy Birthday Doug! Many happy returns and have a great day! xxx
Deliverance was the first song that got me into Opeth and I’ve loved them ever since obv anyone who has heard Opeth has loved them ever since 😂
Same here!
Great reaction as always Doug! Was hoping that this was the Lamentations DVD, which its the best opeth live version of deliverance imo
Opeth deserves the attention of a classical composer.
It’s wonderful to see them getting the respect they deserve and attracting a new generation of fans
Happy birthday, Doug! Glad your brother Dan got you into Opeth! Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
For live shows, the Roundhouse tapes is definitely worth checking out.
Same. Axe just slays on Roundhouse---here he seems to be struggling at times, maybe because of the high elevation of the venue.
Now I have even more appreciation for this masterpiece. Happy Birthday.
Can confirm opeth has been closing with Deliverance more often than not for like 20 years. I saw them the first time in '05 in a crummy little club in Seattle and they were amazing. They and meshuggah are the bands that i will drop everything to see when they are in town. Hevy Devy too.

I have listened to rock/heavy/prog music for the last 45 years …. Opeth blew me away in 2003 ….. top 5 all time fav
Great song. Amazing reaction. Opeth até marvelous.
Happy birthday, Doug! 🙌🏼
It honestly surprises me how you haven't heard this Opeth classic yet. One of their very best! Just goes to show that you're always only scratching the surface of what artists have to offer!
Opeth is what brought me to this channel. Hope to see more!
Happy B-Day Doug! I hope you have a great one and many more spins around the sun!
Great to see DJ Dan and hear his insight. Great track to react to today.
Many happy returns, young man!!! 🎉
Speaking about Dan!! You should react to Bloodywood - Dana Dan. Please bring your brother, he deserves it!
Happy birthday dude! Love your reactions. Your music theory knowledge really adds another level in relation to other reaction vids.
I am also in awe of your perfect pitch! Love that! 🙌

Simply one of the greatest metal songs of all times, that guitar solo into the mellow part is pure genius.
Congratulations on your birthday, Doug 🎂!
Happy birthday, Doud. Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Happy Birthday, my friend
Big thanks Doug for turning me on to bands and music I would otherwise NEVER have heard. Really enjoy your theoretical breakdowns on all this music. Helps to remind me that ALL music can be analyzed whether the composer knows theory on not. Really helps give me a greater appreciation. Happy Birthday Dr D! Another trip around the sun and still looking good and rocking out!😊
Happy Birthday! Greetings from 🇸🇪🤘
Ps Opeth did a cover of Remember Tomorrow by Iron Maiden! I think it was on The first Opeth album from 1995.
Happy Birthday Doug!!! Great choice for a react.
Happy Birthday :D

Happy birthday! Deliverance was in fact the final song when I saw Opeth live few years ago

Really like to watch your reaction on Folklore live in Sydney 2011.
Great stuff

Hey Doug, it is my birthday too! April 10th, the 100th day of the year. Congrats, hope you had a great one!
Last time I saw Opeth was in a NJ blacktop parking lot in July. I think I passed out from heat during the outro of this song and when I came to it was still going. 😄
Happy Birthday from one Aries to another
More Opeth songs, please❤
This era of Opeth was a riff fest theatrical journey with the different points of view with the harsh/clean vocals and the use of the synth in a heavy band like this is done so well. Love this era of Opeth. Doug. Ask your brother if he is a fan of Ne Obliviscaris. If not, I think he would dig them quite a bit.
Dan's face around 27:30 is priceless - I know what's coming...
My thoughts exactly 😂 those drums.. sheesh
Listen to The Moor from Still Life, it’s my favorite song from Opeth and a great example of their peak sound
Happy Birthday Doug! Please do an Intronaut song! Im sure DJ Dan knows whats up!
