  • There were many characters in That 70s Show but not all were loved.
Today, we're here to take a look at the worst by far ... Randy Pearson.
The character meant to replace both Eric Forman and Michael Kelso instead mostly came off as That 70s Show 's own Cousin Oliver.

The show was already going downhill before the addition of Randy. But the main problem was that he tried to replace both Eric AND Kelso, despite both characters being radically different. The fact that characters repeatedly gushed over how supposedly perfect he was didn't do much to endear him to fans.

One thing I didn't understand, with Eric gone instead of replacing him with Charlie or Randy didn't anyone have the idea of replacing him with Mitch? Think about it, he was Eric's rival, had a similar mentality both being geeks, and he was also was after Donna. Plus the character was already established in the show in several episodes. Maybe the writers didn't consider this or maybe Seth Green didn't want to do it? Who knows.

@@dustywaynemusic6297 Seth Green was a movie star level celebrity at the time, in particular, the Austin Powers movies made him a hot ticket for quite awhile. I'm sure they paid him a lot of money for the 5 episode stint he had in the series. They weren't willing to pay that again, especially not for an entire season. I mean that's the reason why tons of great guest characters who frankly were probably not used enough through the entire run of the series. It's amazing to think about it but back then most TV shows had a tiny budget to spend per season regardless of popularity, with very few exceptions. The total opposite of the modern day in other words. There wasn't any genuine reason for being so cheap, it's just that's how TV shows were done for the vast majority of their history.

Randy wasn't the problem of season 8...but damn did he highlight it. Season 7 was a massive downgrade. First two episodes show Eric pawning Donna's ring (which is like the antithesis of one of the previous episodes and why Jackie and Eric really do become friends. On top of that like you mention, the horrible season 8 writers telling us every two minutes how great Randy was makes you kind of not want to like him. That's what side characters do to a new character that the main character hates. He was also a clear replacement character. He should've been included through most of season 7 as a side character that started hanging out with the group more as season 8 came on, and also never paired with Donna. The guy should've had his own girlfriend separate from the group.

Instead of Randy being some new guy, he should of been Eric's cousin living with his aunt and uncle so there would be a reason why the gang hangout in the basement and Eric's house. And instead of trying to be two characters in one and trying to kill two birds with one stone, he should of been a complete different character. Maybe like an skater or a punk rocker. But it is what it is.

i think a punk character could’ve been interesting considering the genre really started booming in the mid 70s but it would’ve been a contrast to the psychedelic rock thing they had going with the group, and i agree with the basement it was strange they all still hung out there after eric left and it never really seemed to be addressed.

Unpopular opinion: I didn't mind Randy and Donna together, even though it didn't work, the main reason is because I never liked Donna, she was always my least favorite character, and I always felt her flaws were never taken into consideration. I also hated the way she'd treat Eric a lot of the time. Donna is a hypocrite who uses feminism to get her way in an argument or some other aspect of her life when she has shown she's not above acting like a stereotypical woman if it benefits her somehow. The fact that she often overacts to some of the smaller things Eric has done and treats him like crap even when he really hasn't done anything wrong and never gets called out on it doesn't help. One of the worst offenders in that regard happens in Season 6 where she gets pissed at Eric having a good time with Jackie, even though she was the one who suggested it hoping he wouldn't enjoy it!
In another episode she gets angry with Eric for making plans with his friends without checking with her first. At the end of the episode, she makes him promise that he'll always check with her before making time with his friends. Eric then asks Donna if she needs his permission to hang out with her friends, to which she replies "no" and leaves to go see a friend.
And in another episode, she yells at Eric for going on two dates with another girl while she and Eric were broken up. Donna, meanwhile, had slept with Casey Kelso around the same time. Also calls Eric out for his insecurity and not trusting her in "Radio Daze" after she announced to the whole town (including the DJ who was clearly attracted her based on calling her "Hot Donna") that she was single and never bothered to talk to him about it. While this wasn't the first time Eric had been jealous, she behaved the same way to him in "Eric's Panties".
The show tries to display Eric as an idiotic pervert at times who believes too much in old fashioned, but more often than not he makes far more convincing arguments than the writers intended, especially when some of the points Donna tries to make borderline on flatout domestic/emotional abuse. When Eric breaks up with Donna, the show treats it as though it was his fault and everyone believes Donna actually broke up with him despite Eric's protests. Then when Donna breaks up with Casey and immediately wants to get back together with Eric, his refusal is treated as selfish and idiotic by Red and Kitty. Regardless what one thinks of Eric's old-fashioned values, the fact is that he and Donna had very different visions for the future and if neither was willing to compromise for the other then it's for the best they broke up, and when Donna wanted to hook up again she was clearly on the rebound from Casey (which Eric called her on), and none of the underlying problems that had led to them breaking up in the first place had been resolved.
Donna who is presented as one of the most mature and rational characters on the show constantly acts like a self righteous hypocrite in addition to treating Eric horribly even when he didn't do anything wrong.

Even if Randy wasn’t a part of the show, the jokes weren’t landing, characters we already knew were totally out of character, and not having Kelso and especially Eric really made the show feel without purpose. When are you gonna talk about 90's show? I feel like the general opinion was that it wasn't awful, but no where near as good as 70's show. Red Kitty and the rest of the original cast carry the show and a lot of people say it feels like a Disney show.

The only thing worse than Randy was Donna's blonde hair

How about Randy with blonde hair? I hated the way that both Red and, then Kitty, became so sycophantic towards the “perfect” Randy.

I think he was a fun character and Josh Myers was super charismatic, it was the forced relationship with Donna, and Hyde and Jackie breaking up that ruined it.

Turn him to a Hyde type since Hyde himself won’t be there

Greed killed That 70s Show. It should’ve ended in Season 7, or even 6. But no. The network got greedy.

No, hiring writers and showrunners for the last two seasons that had little sitcom and showrunning experience, were hired anyway, given cart blanche to take the show in any creative direction they saw fit. And with very little to no oversight. These extremely green showrunners behind the scenes showed an arrogance and misplaced sense of confidence and uncompromising stubbornness and thin skinned ego to cling to any idea no matter how irrefutably bad they were, and they were mostly horrendously bad, and Slim Pickins ride or die nuke warhead straddle that show killer idea all the way into a mushroom cloud sized annihilation of everything that came before and anything that could've gone after if they were reigned in or exposed for the I'll fit and creative cancer they were. This 'creative' team out their own bias and personal likes and hates above anything the actors, the shows overall inherent core value system and foundation in favor of putting in place things that contradicted characters motivations and who they were as people just because they didn't like certain characters so changed them to personality traits they found funny to them and their skill set could write, which was less a low bar, than no bar. They didn't listen to fans and then do their own thing anyway. No. They didn't listen to begin with. They were only concerned with doing exactly what they wanted every given time. And that would change on a dime like a room full of HDHD kids off their meds given the keys to the kingdom. They burned Rome down in a season of incompetent lazy indifferent selfish 'work.' The undoing of Hyde and Jackie that had series rejuvenation powers so strong and limitless potential, they could've had a spin off series all their own after the legacy series ended. But, they reverse coursed it so amateurishly and bush league level avoidance by pretending it was never in the continuity, they killed brand confidence, any expansion of said IP and spin off brand promise and the legacy institution itself. All because of petty decisions so innate like they broke up this uber character rich couple for the mere bone headed reason they just didn't like the pairing because they just really didn't like the Jackie character so not so subconsciously did Kunis dirty by sabotaging her character and show career sinking her week by week tied to this dead weight anchor of horrible character assassination of a character.
They were a somewhat anomaly to the Hollywood television world playbook in the early nauts. Now it's the system in place run amok as an institution and business model of driving fans away and shows into the ground.
