  • Have you ever thought to yourself... "What if That 70s Show took place in the UK"?
    No? Well someone did... and the end result is Days Like These.
    Despite being a word for word remake of it's predecessor, it definitely doesn't hold up to it.

      Karl O'Shaughnessy the style yes, the sets and costumes look good. But the cinematography the lighting, camera work etc all look outdated and hazy. At least with the original you could still watch it without it seeming aged out of time. Stranger things is another good example they still remain true to the set designs and costumes and you could still get a feel for the time with the cinematography and camera work looking good

      They both but, but even shows that were filmed in the 70's had better production values, and if you set a show in the 40's you don't have to shoot it in black and white. The fact the UK version looks so much older than the US vesion baffles me.

    • @ChasingLamely
      @ChasingLamely 4 роки тому +53

      I've worked in British television. Actually, I worked in British television at the time this was being made.
      It actually had a budget that was above average for British TV at the time, because the American producers didn't realise that we spend far less on producing television than they do.
      Hell, for the actors in the show, this was probably the biggest payday of their careers by some distance.

    • @jaydee4697
      @jaydee4697 4 роки тому +11

      @@ChasingLamely I wonder if the show-makers deliberately tried to make it look dingy like a lot of British tv shows/films looked like back in the 70s (many ITV sitcoms at the time looked like that); it does have a similar screen-quality to other seventies British sitcoms. Either that, or the version Vee found was recorded off a American television network who used the original footage without changing it (there's a difference between British and American television footage, apparently).

    • @ChasingLamely
      @ChasingLamely 4 роки тому +8

      @@jaydee4697 to the best of my knowledge, it didn't air in the US. Partially because it would've been redundant, partially because it thankfully never reached enough episodes for syndication.
      I'm 99% certain that the quality is what's known as a "generation" issue. Someone has taped it off the telly onto VHS, then found it and digitised it later, then uploaded it, which means it lost quality at least three times.
      As I said in another comment, this was pretty common in the old wrestling tape trading days. Anything beyond the third or fourth generation of recording would be rendered completely unwatchable because of it.

    • @ChasingLamely
      @ChasingLamely 4 роки тому +8

      @ً no, I worked on a different show, but I remember this being discussed fairly regularly. The idea of a major American production company getting involved in British TV on that scale was big news. @@thebrettyouneed178 to be fair, had they actually let the writers - who are among Britain's best sitcom writers - actually adapt the show rather than just change the cultural references, it probably would've been okay. Please do US fawlty towers. One thing I've always noticed about differences between US and UK shows is that so many US show depict aspirational rich people and familes , the American dream realisation etc dallas, dynasty, all the way up to Billions, and the modern aspirational shows, we have mundane working class kitchen sink drama like eastenders, coronation Street etc. Your detective's are hard boiled sexy gun wielding tough guys. As someone who has watched That 70's show millions of times holy copy paste. Besides a handful of clips I knew what was going on even without the audio. Off the top of my head the clips that stood out were the one with Kelso on the ground he just found out Jackie might be pregnant, the clip where jackie is standing behind Kelso, the band may have changed but Jackie's questioning why she wasn't invited to the Todd Runderman (Todd Rundgren) concert and finally the clip where red is shaking the table and complains about the uneven legs and Eric says to put sugar packets and red says something like "...that's why the worlds going to crap in a hand basket everyone wants their sugar packet method". Which is then followed by a scene at Donna's house where there kitchen table is wobbly and bob just tells midge to put some sugar packets underneath.

  • @BadWilf
    @BadWilf 3 роки тому

    It’s weird when Britain makes remakes of US sitcoms, because our networks are filled with American shows. We just watch those. I had no idea this remake was a thing, until about 5 years ago.
    Interestingly, Britain tends to remake American game shows with great success. The long running ‘University challenge’ is a remake of ‘College Bowl’.
    Gervais and Merchant opted to not be “hands on” with any of The Office remakes (there’re many of them). As they didn’t know office culture outside the UK. When The US Office was established and a success, they then started directing episodes.
    Merchant once said “we decided we would just licence the core idea, because we didn’t know how office culture works in France, America, Germany or Canada. For instance, in France. It’s customary for everyone in the office to share a bottle of wine at the end of the day. I didn’t know that until I saw the French remake. Ricky and I would never have written that in”

    If you want to see a British-US cross adaptation that really didn't work, I'd recommend checking out Skins. The British version died at the end of Season 4. It got a decent 6-episode revival/catch-up miniseries after season 6.
    The American version was made for MTV by a large group of people who didn't seem to have seen the show, but knew it involved teenagers and drugs.
    Also, no, British TV didn't look like that in the 90s. The difference is that we used the PAL video format, not NTSC at the time, which always looked different anyway (thank fuck for digital) and then these episodes are obviously uploaded from VHS, because the show never saw a commercial release. So you've already got at least three generations of quality loss from the recording, digitisation and uploading.
    It's like back in the day, when you'd trade wrestling tapes but yours was like the fifth generation of Japanese death matches and you weren't sure if you were watching Terry Funk or John Candy.

    • @ChasingLamely
      @ChasingLamely 4 роки тому

      @@blindlobster that was mostly because Coupling started life as a successful Friends rip-off. So, when they tried to convert it back to American, they realised they were just making it a shit version of Friends.

      Frankly, it's a war crime.

    • @blindlobster

      @@ChasingLamely Coupling might be seen as a Friends rip-off but the British version (of Coupling) was a lot (trust me, a loooooot) edgier, naughty (I'm cringing while typing the word) and light-hearted. They were very separate in substance. The show "Coupling" couldn't be made today however the show "Friends" could.

    Just discovered your channel. Enjoyable critiques! I agreed with your view on why transfers from the US to the UK, and vice versa, often don't work. If you haven't discovered it already, the UK did a version of The Golden Girls with very highly regarded British actresses. It was called The Brighton Belles and it was horrific. Having said that, the US version of the brilliant IT Crowd was an example of how US TV comedy finds comedic subtlety impossible.
