Vasagos are a legit smart design. There's rarely any reason to back away from the thing that comes from hell and shoots fire at you, so simply backing up is a bit OP. But their fire attack does AOE damage at the wall behind you, so backing up when fighting them is bad. So it's the classic pinchers move.
I think the unevenness of the difficulty of the levels might be intentional. I know some mappers like to do it that way to give some breathing room for the player, as having many difficult levels, one after another, can wear you out quickly.
Nailed it 🎯 Modern wads are designed like rollercoasters - lots of thrills, alternating with interludes of chills. If you are constantly getting hammered or cruising on first gear, the mapset becomes exhausting to play.
I’m a Zoomer Doom Fan, grew up on consoles and never really got to experience the classic Doom craze until I was much older with the ports from Eternal’s hype cycle. This release absolutely blew me away. The portal in Legacy of Rust made my jaw drop. I know this kind of stuff was possible, but getting to play it myself, on an officially released port on fucking PlayStation just blew me away. I know it’s silly but man. They did so good on this
It's a gorgeous effect, it really is. I figured out how it probably works right away, but that doesn't take away any of the magic. God I fucking love Doom.
@@TehNoobiness I think the reason classic doom does that is because of how well known and accessible the engine and tools are, like when I saw that effect happen I didn’t think “oh a portal to hell sweet” like I would in modern doom, it was more “holy shit how did the map maker do that??” It feels more personal, more.. human?? Idk it’s hard to formulate but Classic Doom definitely hits different

That map is so strange to me. You kean to tell me they only give you ammo for ONE type of weapon? The weapon that has self damage. And then throw the player in multiple close range engagements?
@@archiemisc I can't say I'm a fan of it either. They replaced a spray and pray weapon that's great for fighting up close with a short range weapon that will basically kill you if you use it up close thanks to the splash damage.

2024 is a wild year. Not only did Civvie make direct reference to Sunlust in a video but you can even play Sunlust on console through an official port.
The way the calamity blade works and the situations you use it in reminds me of the BFG in the super Nintendo version of doom which was different mechanically than in other version. That one seemed to do a set big chunk of damage to everything in front of you until it hit a wall. I remember i used it once on a baron and other enemies up on a platform in the mountain/volcano like level with the hidden exit and there was a window behind the platform. I went outside behind where the window was and i found a bunch of dead Cacodemons in a alcove.
What's funny is Limited Run re-release the SNES Doom and call it Doom Collector's Edition with brand-new levels as well as Episode 4! They even hired the same programmer who made the first SNES Doom and crated Super FX chip call SFX3!

It's worth mentioning if you pistol start The Coiled City, it's cruelty skyrockets even further. The incinerator is the only weapon you get for a solid 2/3s of it, so the splash damage problem gets so much worse Not to mention all the long-range demons the flamethrower can't hit, while also forcing you to get closer to them (the banshee especially) Pistol starting this level honestly is harder than most fan levels. I'd put it above a good chunk of Sunder
Harder than the first map or two of Sunder, I'll grant you, but I feel that "a good chunk" is a bit of an exaggeration. First playthrough's rough for sure, but knowing the secrets helps a lot in The Coiled City.
The Shock Trooper is near-identical in behavior and concept to the Evil Marine from the megawad Scythe 2. Either great minds think alike, or it's an intentional reference. I'm a fan regardless.
I was thinking of that one, especially considering they either get introduced in Map 31 (the one you have to do in less than 30 seconds to reach Map 32), or in Map 16, Mr. X, the one that's a creepy cave where at the end they get dropped on you.
this wad was cool. The music was incredible (props to xaser) and the maps looked great. for my tastes it had some big flaws. Some maps felt like they were for a different kind of wad and messed with the progression in a way (sewer map with 400 enemies and different textures out of nowhere, then going back to techbase and less enemies, what happened there?) coiled city sucked, and the traps were unfun. You can have an unfair map with hard traps, but at least make it fun. This one map kind of soured the rest of the experience for me. Last maps were an exercise in triggering a trap, then running to the open door to use it as a funnel. Except for the revenant trap, it was mostly mechanical. Enemies are a mixed bag. Some feel really out of place, not really adding much to dooms combat (vassago's attack feels weird, and i personally dislike chip damage like the absurdly big splash zone does, and the shock trooper was like a Blood cultist. Maybe if he was slower it'd feel more like a common doom enemy?) while others added something to fights i quite liked (the beta lost soul and exploding soul). The chaingun arachnotron I'd accept if i could easily distinguish between classic spiders and the new ones. Same with the smaller cyberdemon, to a lesser degree. New guns are cool.I like the flamethrower (except in E1M6) The calamity blade was absolutely overpowered, i guess on purpose, to make you use it, but it felt kind of cheap winning using it. Single, non charged shots from it felt way too efficient. Overall, it was fantastic at the start, with a few missteps. I cant say i liked it completely (there were a ton of bothersome things for me), but wanting to leave it in a positive note, the maps looked beautiful, had some fun combat, and really, extremely good music. fuck coiled city.

@@DinnerForkTongue He hasn't retired, he's just focusing on projects that don't require long recording sessions so he can spend time with his kid.

Chaingun-wielding Arachnotrons are also a new enemy, they're called the 'Mindweaver'.
It's worth mentioning if you pistol start The Coiled City, it's cruelty skyrockets even further. The incinerator is the only weapon you get for a solid 2/3s of it, so the splash damage problem gets so much worse
Not to mention all the long-range demons the flamethrower can't hit, while also forcing you to get closer to them (the banshee especially)
Pistol starting this level honestly is harder than most fan levels. I'd put it above a good chunk of Sunder
Harder than the first map or two of Sunder, I'll grant you, but I feel that "a good chunk" is a bit of an exaggeration. First playthrough's rough for sure, but knowing the secrets helps a lot in The Coiled City.

It is the appropriate response to that many Archviles being in a monster closet...
this wad was cool. The music was incredible (props to xaser) and the maps looked great.
for my tastes it had some big flaws. Some maps felt like they were for a different kind of wad and messed with the progression in a way (sewer map with 400 enemies and different textures out of nowhere, then going back to techbase and less enemies, what happened there?)
coiled city sucked, and the traps were unfun.
Maybe if he was slower it'd feel more like a common doom enemy?)
while others added something to fights i quite liked (the beta lost soul and exploding soul).
The chaingun arachnotron I'd accept if i could easily distinguish between classic spiders and the new ones. Same with the smaller cyberdemon, to a lesser degree.
New guns are cool.I like the flamethrower (except in E1M6)
The calamity blade was absolutely overpowered, i guess on purpose, to make you use it, but it felt kind of cheap winning using it.
