Build a Stylized Topographic Landscape in Blender

  • Hey everyone -- this fun and quick tutorial will show you how to use a few simple modifiers to achieve this cool topographic landscape effect. We'll learn about booleans, arrays, displacement, and even cover the Nishita Sky, some light modeling, and even materials all to end up with a nifty little result! Enjoy.

    Just a tip: Don't use Base Color for transluscent objects. Use Volume Absorbtion instead. It's fast, looks better and much more accurate!

    This was a lifesaver. had to animate some shapes and this was as useful.. just animating the height got it done !

    Hey Derek, absolutely love this tutorial! I followed along in hopes to export a STL of my map for 3D printing. But when I do it exports the whole cube with my map hidden inside. Any tips on how to isolate that for exporting?

    I have a tip you can model this in edit mode with different tools and go to top veiw and use the camera to cover the entire space of the object and bake the texture is this useful not discouraging just a tip hope it was useful you can use subdivide modifier also so make it easy also add bevel modifier

    This is awesome! I learned a lot from this tutorial. One question. If I want to animate the movement to create a short video, similar to what you did at 9:30, is there an easy way to make the video loopable so that the end frame looks just like the beginning frame?

      Instead of transforming the texture on an axis you can do a 360° rotation. That is the best way I found to loop procedural textures

    Hey! I've been trying to get this to work and I think it may be the wrong process for what I'm trying. Wondering if you could give some tips. I have a mountain rendered in blender using photogrammetry. I'm trying to create contour lines as a elevation map using this process. Would you have any tips or guide me to anywhere I can find how to do this please?

      You could use your boolean object as the mountain and follow similar process but it would not be identical to what we did here

    I am having some wird boolean errors where instead of cuttng the plane it creates some random new geometry. Could you suggest a fix.

      Check to make sure you're using the fast versus exact Boolean method. Also try things like recalculating normals and checking the order of your modifier stack. Hard to say exactly though let me know what you find out

      @@DerekElliott Thanks man, my particular issue was happening when the cutter object (cube) and the plane were the exact same size (X,Y). Also playing with the array and solidify settings would give me some artifacts. Thanks for the response :D

      Fixed it . Just had to scale down the plane a bit.

      Sounds like modifiers in wrong order or you need to adjust the offset settings

      you could load in a height map or something from some GIS database or something? I am not sure how, but I am sure you could do it!

    how could i export this as an .stl with only the layering of the plane? When I export I get the entire object including the square.

      I think you would need to apply all the modifiers and then export the meshes

      Making a car takes a very long time. This might be something I tried to do eventually but there are existing courses out there and for the most part if you need a car model it makes more sense to download one

    Do you think the glitching would still happen if you applied the modifiers before rendering?

      No it would not happen -- on my boat animation I actually made a very long strip to avoid this. The issue can only happen when the bool calculates (like by moving the empty) so if you apply them all then any animation would be fine

      dont delete the face, that was a separate example. Subdivide the the most southern on the z axis. face to a high point. Then when you apply the displace. Make sure that you have it set on the z axis not y or x

      I added a second material slot that is black and set the solidify material offset to use this material
