    Great tutorial! 1 tip for new blender users, make sure you're using the Cycles render engine not EEVEE. Your displacement maps won't work unless youre in Cycles as far as i'm aware. Thanks!

      @4nto418 7 місяців тому +1

      The "bump only/displacement only" options don't even show up in EEVEE, make sure you set it before the "set to displacement, not bump" step.

    Very nice! One tip is that you should set the color space for your displacement texture to "Linear" not "sRGB". Otherwise it's going it's not going to displace accurately and you'll lose a lot of the lower elevations.

    This method really cool and simple without some QGIS operating, but I want to know how to change the background color or add another layer such as water bodies.

    Would it be possible to export as OBJ and 3D print in color? Since there is no color in STL format. Many thanks!

    Changing displacement is not an option for me in setting. My settings panel looks different. It doesn’t have bump, or displacement. Any ideas or other ways to do this? My settings has backface culling unboxed, blend, shadow, refraction, and pass index only…

      You have to use Cycles and not EEVEE. Go in Rendering and change it

    Need help... I'm new to Blender and just recently installed the 4.0 version. /// I can't subdivide the plane (right click menu doesn't pop up) and I can't find the "Bump Only" on drop menu in Setting > Surface. It really stresses me out. Help

    • @jaredralphstanley
      @jaredralphstanley  Місяць тому

      It sounds like you’re in object mode and you need to be in edit mode. Hit TAB to toggle between modes.
      Edit mode edits the specific polygons and geometry of an object, Object mode works at the object level so you can add or remove different objects.
      Sry it’s stressing you out, I’d highly recommend going through a dozen or more tutorials from @polygonrunway first to get comfortable with the basics

      Here’s a couple ideas you guys could try:
      - make sure the number of polygons is huge. Select your polygons in edit mode, subdivide like 5 times and then come out of edit mode back to object mode
      - make sure your image resolution is large enough and has enough info to render out the details.
      - make sure you’re not in evee, I think this may only work in cycles.
      Try those and lmk the outcome! Good luck!

    Do you know of a resource that shows below sea level elevations (bathymetry) using a similar method of the black and white displacement images?

    • @jaredralphstanley
      @jaredralphstanley  8 місяців тому +1

      hmm not sure. www.pacioos.hawaii.edu/metadata/world_srtm30plus_bathy1km_hillshade.html?format=fgdc maybe someone on this url would know?
      I feel like the arcGIS stuff is the most complex part of this process, mainly because it requires high accuracy....while the blender approach is prioritizing visuals not accuracy.
      good luck!

    • @jaredralphstanley
      @jaredralphstanley  Рік тому

      sure. what specifically do you not understand? exporting for digital/print is just like anything else - if you're thinking of exporting for 3D printing or something, that's not something I am familiar with. Either way there are dozens of tutorials that can walk you through either of those.
      as far as looking like mine - it's the exact same process, just a different color gradient and a different spot on the map. Same lights, camera, process etc. I cover how to set up everything here, including choosing color palettes.
      LMK if you're thinking of something specific and I can help!

      @@Zeroman141 Ryan King has a great tutorial on how to export an image: ua-cam.com/video/napMtY5Tyx8/v-deo.html
      basically you choose render > render image in the top nav, and then save the resulting image to your computer. His tutorial helps you tweak the settings.
      Also Polygon Runway goes over this at the end of almost all of his videos, especially his earlier ones.

    wait, dude...PLEASE please can you update this video to talk more thoroughly through the shadows/lights? I followed this tutorial exactly but my light is SO harsh and horrible. • @jaredralphstanley
      @jaredralphstanley  9 місяців тому

      Ah man sry that sucks when you follow the steps but get stuck on something.
      It sounds like it might be the size of the light? Try making it larger / smaller or moving it further away (although with the sun settings it shouldn’t make a difference).
      polygonrunway on UA-cam has tons of great tutorials on lighting, I’d check those out and get comfortable w the lights and then revisit.

      thank you. but what about rendering and exporting?
      Im semi begging that you redo this video with way more detail. like, it took me several hours to figure out that you had the rendering set to evee and not cycles so that i could change the "bump" thing.... @@jaredralphstanley

    • @jaredralphstanley

      The polygonrunway guy goes over all the rendering etc and will get you familiar with all those settings.

    • @littlebird2573
      @littlebird2573 9 місяців тому

      @@jaredralphstanley i really appreciate that you did this video but i think that this video is very misleading. Following these steps will not produce the final map you have shown. you should have stated that you adusted the lighting beforehand so that when your viewers follow along they will know why their lighting/shadows look like shit. like i said, i have never opened blender before and was extremely confused and it took me a really long time to understand that you simply did not discuss these things. its kind of frustrating/disengenous. there is a huge absence of tutorials that take you step by step through producing a nice looking DEM based map in blender. its kind of like somehow there is this concerted effort to not explain the entire thing to keep the knowledge hidden or something? its very frustrating. anyways i appreciate this video but it is lacking for sure

    • @jaredralphstanley
      @jaredralphstanley  9 місяців тому

      Sry. it’s definitely not for ppl brand new to blender. if you’ve never opened blender you should be focused on basics. Did you expect to open the program and be able to recreate this after following a 20-min tutorial?
      If you haven’t learned about lights I’d suggest you focus on that, if you haven’t learned about rendering I’d suggest focusing on that. Anyone with basic blender skills should be able to recreate this but I’m not able to go through from installing to navigating etc. a basic level of knowledge is assumed.
      Good luck!
