    5:58 6 of HMCS Athabaskan crew that returned to England via motor cutter were rescued by Haida's Motor Cutter. when Haida returned to the scene to rescue Athabaskan's survivors (ignoring three orders to return to port ) Captain Harry DeWolf ordered ropes and nets over the side and boats lowered (unmanned) Four of Haida crew jumped in to man the motor cutter but couldn't get onboard by the time Haida had to return home. they ended up rescuing 6 crew of Athabaskan and two of Haida crew who fell off the nets when Haida got underway. they dodged enemy aircraft and a chasing German minesweeper in a boat with a "cranky" engine that needed a hammer to convince it to run until they eventually reached the coast of England where the RAF provided them a escort to port

    Just as a point of fact, the RCN's ensign is in the game. If you go to the bottom of the flags section in the exterior tab, there's a drop down for Naval Flags, that lets you pick between the group and national ensigns of the ships' countries. This is present in the Pan Asian, Commonwealth, and the approaching Pan American trees.

      Which Canadian flag? The ensign of today or the Canadian red ensign of WW2?

    • @tankman66
      @tankman66 6 років тому

      Peorhum all commonwealth ships during ww2 used the British white ensign naval flag. It was only until later when commonwealth countries became more independent and created things like their own naval ensigns

    • @Peorhum
      @Peorhum 6 років тому

      ummm...yes and no...1stly we are talking WG here, who knows what the hell they will do and the red resign was somewhat the national flag of Canada until the current flag was picked, including in WW2. The standard white ensign/battle ensign was used but the blue ensign was the official flag of the RCN from the time it was created to the current flag being picked...again though...who knows what the hell WG would have picked, the current Canadian flag, the red ensign which I would not be surprised they picked, or the blue one. SO you are right to a point but being a dominion Canada did have enough of it's own identity to have it's own ensigns. In fact the Haida often still flies the old blue ensign in honour of her war career under the blue ensign. I think it was the same with Australia, they did fly the white ensign but also an Australian version of the blue ensign, more in harbour, from her jack staff.

    Thank you very much for the interesting (and, at times, touching) review of HMCS Haida, and for acknowledging the critical role that the RCN served in the Battle of the Atlantic.
    As a boy I paid several visits to the Haida when she was moored in Toronto Harbour. She's a lot bigger up close (especially when you're about 5 feet tall...) than she looks in WoW. And she is a still-living legacy to the valour of all the ordinary Canadians, from every part of the country and from all walks of life, who fought bravely and often at a terrible cost in World War 2, for the causes of freedom, national self-determination, democracy and the rule of law.
    WoW may just be a wargame, but videos like this remind one that 75 years ago, it was anything BUT, a "game". Great review and video, Jingles! :-)

    Got Haida when it first appeared because it is CANADIAN! My skill level can't do her justice, but I like destroyers and I just love CQB or knife-fighting with a passion. The Smith is one of my favorite stilettos. Three tubes reloading every 11 seconds means you never run out or torps and it is all close range sniping. Fuuuuuns!
    Yes, I will eventually get the skills required to fight Haida properly and I will be coming back to this tutorial of yours, Jingles, to train on her with diligence. I'm sure you weren't thinking "manual" when you wrote this up, but to this untutored wretch, it is just that. Many thanks.

At least with the Commonwealth faction (and the future Pan-American one as well) I think there would be less people getting their panties in a twist like the China/Taiwan debacle.

    • @fafniroth
      @fafniroth 6 років тому +4

      You can change flags on Commonwealth ships, but only to the White Ensign. Commonwealth nations didn't start flying their own variant until much later, although there's a good chance it will be added anyway now that the number of those ships is increasing.

    Hi Jingles, I absolutely loved this video, both as a Canadian and as a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces. Thank you so much for going into the historical details, and the "thank you" at the end. Your "lump in the throat" comment was spot on. Love sailing my Haida on WoW, I think every time about friends who live and friends who have been lost. Lost a good one only weeks ago in the line of duty. I salute you, sir :) . And while I can't speak for all of Canada, I'm more than happy that you honoured us and the crew of HMCS Haida with the anthem. Cheers.

    I can imagine T-24 embarking (pun intended) on a quest of revenge against Haida, leading to the second and third encounters between the two destroyers, and Haida having no idea what T-24 is on about and then apologizing for defeating her during their third battle. Because, you know, Canadian.

      If you want to build torpedo boats that are as big or bigger than everyone else's destroyers, you can call them London Taxicabs if it it makes you feel better but everyone else is going to call them destroyers.

      T-24 had a displacement of 1295 tons, 68% of the displacement of a Tribal class (1854 tons), 61% of a Fletcher class destroyer and 90% of an E class destroyer of 1405 tons. So i stand by my point that it was not bigger as everyone "else's" destroyers but smaller as contemporary allied destroyers. Its larger as a Clemson class destroyer build 23 years earlier. All following American destroyers of the interwar time and world war 2 time frame are larger. Even American destroyer escorts were larger. For British destroyers its slightly larger as a town class build in 1917 (24years difference), the following classes are larger. One exception might be the British Hunt class with was designed as primary escort, more like a American Destroyer Escort, so i discount these for this argument. For France the planned inter war lion class was 1780tons (71%), the Chacal class was 2126tons (60%) and so on.

      Barrettus Calling the french-canadians Froggies shows your total ignorance of the french-canadian culture. I've live there my whole life and I never saw anyone eat frogs and I've never seen it in any restaurant menu either (except, you guessed it, in French cuisine restaurants of course)

    • @barrettus
      @barrettus 6 років тому

      You talk of "total" ignorance... but you say you lived there you entire life. Lived where? To be French Canadian is to live in one place? That's a rather narrow statement! One city or province does not determine that identity. I do concede that the etymology of the French Frog has nothing to do with Canada. Some suggest it's related to a suburb of Paris, others ancient heraldry and yes for some the actual eating of frogs. As a french speaker outside Québec I can tell you being referred to as a frog is very much a part of Canadian culture. Sadly the behavior of a certain group of ignorant Québecers have alienated us to such a large extent that we francophones also refer to the inhabitants of La Belle Province as Frogs. Amicalement, André.

      Actually, calling the French frogs refers to the decorative frogging the French army put on the sleeves of their troops' uniforms in the 1800s to stop said troops from wiping their noses on their sleeves.
      It has nothing whatsoever to do with amphibians.
      That's just another uninformed myth that grew out of the total ignorance oft utilized by the lumpenproletariat as "common knowledge."
      I lived in Paris for four years. The term has nothing to do with any of the faubourgs de Paris.

      5.7km Surface Detection better than I believe any tier 7 destroyer? Check.
      Has as many guns as the Akatsuki that fire faster, turn faster, are weighted toward the front, and do more damage? Check.
      Has 1x4 torpedoes that are roughly equal to the Maass's 2x4 torpedoes except much higher damage, but it can single launch? Check.
      A health pool only rivaled by an upgraded Maass? Check.
      Has a smoke/hydro combo? Check.
      Has smoke that allows for more movement instead of being a torpedo magnet? Check.
      Fastest rudder shift, middle-of-the-pack leaning towards better end on turning circle, and isn't the slowest tier 7 DD? Check.
      Has a secondary gun for maximum meme build? Check.
      What about cons?
      Floaty arcs (ooh, curb your enthusiasm /s).
      Only 1x4 torpedoes (woe is me).
      #3 Turret has bad arcs (oh no, the rear turret on an aggressive ship has bad arcs, how will we survive?! /s)
      What cons not listed here does the wargaming wiki say? What? It needs IFHE? As far as I know there is next to no ship in the game with an armour value of 20, so these shells penetrate just as much armour as 127mm guns, since you need to subtract 1 to find what you can penetrate.

      Americans pronounce it different, which Jingles did not use either so he was wrong either way BUT since the HMCS Iroquois was a Canadian ship, the Canadian pronouncement should be used. irekwa

    I don’t see a point of buying haida over the sims, other than its being the only commonwealth destroyer

      I know it has that “different” smoke screen, but sims win for me at least.

      On the Haida front she has better hp, stealth and gun performance with the Sims having that great manoeuvrability. The smokes are about the same just very different . I find the torps a similar again but different. I love the Sims but as a aggressive player I find the Haida good fun. I am looking forward to the Cossack but worry about the fact it is tier 8 :) However for me crew training is a factor and I do not own the Perth so her and the Vampire are getting captains ready for the Commonwealth line if it appears :)

    TYVM Jingles this is a great memory as we studied this ship in basic training Halifax, then I served on the HMCS Provider and later Toronto in my 3rd year. Loved the exp. and now I am enjoying WOW with you =) I would like to see this ingame to try but seriously we have no Navy just some help ships, hospital and 1 sub lol.
