World of Warships - Sink The Bismarck!

- The bad news - I'm away at Gamescom in Germany. No wait, that's good news, for me at least. The further good news is that I managed to get a video or two pre-uploaded before I went, and the second one is this review of the new German tier 8 Battleship, the mighty Bismarck. Quick, sink it!

"The Sheffield managed to escape without being team-killed."
Jingles gold.
"Fuckin' noobs" - Captain, HMS Sheffield.

When doing analytical chemistry, when you calculate your standard deviation, the errors often tend to correct themselves. I never heard of it working in war: Defective torpedoes being a good thing because they were fired at a friendly ship!
*****
There are biases and errors, but generally the errors cancel out because for every high measurement error there is a low one which, on average, cancels out the low measurement.
Biases (both instruments and analysts can have biases) can cancel out too, but they are also easy to detect by using a known standard as part of the analysis.
I used to be a good analytical chemist before I started working in publics works labs under EPA (and about a dozen other) bureaucratic regulations. I don't like to think about that.
not real email btw
I only watch WOWS vids cause of the history telling jingles does I just love it

Jingles adds history at the beginning of each "review" video. iChase has separate series of videos: on the one hand actual in-game ships' reviews, and on the other historical reviews ("Know your ship" series) of different vessels, either already in the game, planned to be, or non of these but just for the sake of history.
Jingle's videos are much better for the history buff, but for reviews and how to play's his videos are terrible.
I like the History parts as well, im a Historian and focus on miitary history (as well as early US)
have to agree. ive never played this game and these are by far my favorite videos he uploads.
Royal Navy in a nutshell: "managed to avoid contact ..."; "they almost attacked and sank the Cruiser HMS Suffolk"; "keep his fleet on the wrong curse"; "The Swordfish attacked the Sheffield"
And yet they have won. :-D
You're using advanced punctuation but you're bad at writing legible sentences. Read back over what you've written before you start throwing around insults aye? ;)
+Vojtěch “Mortis” Ptáček Yeah 30vs1
+Vojtěch “Mortis” Ptáček Having the largest and most experienced Navy in history at the time did help a smidge. :P
The Atlantic is a Ocean at least 3000 miles across and probably twice that long trying to find a BB in that space is like trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack! but the result remains the same - the Bismarks mission was to sink convoys and the RN stopped her from doing that if she'd managed to find a convoy the death toll on our side wouldn't have been 1400+ it'll have been in the thousands just in merchant fleet and escort crews and that's without the toll on the civilian population through lack of rations!
1:25 a wild Dunkerque appears, thanks Pinco for pointing out the actual ship.
Jingles you forgot about the cat on the Bismarck, it's 114 men and 1 cat saved.
They always land on their feet i guess
You're telling me the Germans brought a cat with them on the Bismarck?
+Sgtky WOT it was pretty common
+Sgtky WOT the cats hunt mice and rats on board
Yes. Yes we did. Unsinkable Sam is his nickname.
I love story time with Jingles, it's the only reason I watched your War Thunder content, because your commentary made it interesting. Learning about machines of war from an old Geezer like you really lights up my day.
46 year old guy an "old geezer"... man you must be young one :)
and thats the only reason im watching jingles. wargamings games are not my style
Warthunder is just annoying sometimes, trying to grind any line but russian just gets you one shotted by russian tanks
Yeah I mainly watch Jingles videos for the ramblings in Mingles, and the historical background stories. Not really into the Wargaming series myself either =/
Wicked Mouse I don't mind the game play, but I mainly come for the Jingles voice over, I would love it if he could do a history lesson every time, but I understand that it would be quite implausible.

In the movie 'Sink the Bismarck' the actor who played the captain of HMS Prince of Wales took up acting after both of his eyes were badly injured when in real life the HMS Prince of Wales hit on the bridge. The total lost of sight in one eye and reduced vision in the other eye ended his service as a sea going officer in RNVR.
I saw "sink the Bismark" a couple years ago. Quite an amazingly made war movie for its time, the ship models look great and the effects in the movie were pretty good. I highly recommend the movie to anyone here.
+Night Train123 Meh. When I was a kid, I saw him more as a German patriot than a Nazi politican. His pride in his ship was well earned and he never actually did anything bad, or even say anything bad. The only odd moment was his extraordinary pride at the message from Hitler, but I wonder whether a British admiral would've been similarly proud at a message from the King or PM. The actor was a bit exuberant, I suppose, but it didn't ruin the character.
He seemed to have blind faith in Hitler towards the end of the voyage, and his strange lengthy signal is hard to explain unless you accept he was at least an extreme patriot or Nazi. He seemed to be somewhat changed from his Atlantic sortie in Scharnhorst and Gneiseneau, its something we will never likely be able to resolve - maybe if the film and logs that were to be evacuated on the float plane were ever to be found.
Night Train123 The reason to not turn back after Denmark Straits is probably down to believing there was still enough fuel onboard to perform the mission and dock in France where there would be better access to the Atlantic as well as the rest of the German surface fleets major units. The mistake was in not refueling in Norway, an RN ship will refuel as soon as it reaches an anchorage where it is possible to do so, Lutjens made the mistake of not doing so. There is also the problem with turning back putting Bismarck into range of the RAF and main British fleet, as they would need to somehow get past both to get to Germany, Scapa Flow being perfectly placed to allow this.
Divers were certainly put overboard to inspect the rudders, the implication of calousness could also be ascribed to desperation and a lack of time, in that the lives of three or four divers being less important than the two thousand on Bismarck.
The Germans did seem to have a great belief in how good the Bismarck class were, mostly from a lack of development in naval design from 1918 - 1940, Bismarck was designed for short ranged WWI style North Sea encounters, but very vulnerable to longer range battle damage.
Quite what was driving Lutjens during the Bismarck sortie is hard to define, as it was out of character with his behaviour in the breakout of the Twins he commanded. It is possible he believed the propaganda, possibly also sought to win great renown for the navy before Barbarossa took place, we really cannot say.
Night Train123
I sort of agree, but why would a successful admiral have such fatalistic feelings given his earlier record? This is why his attitude and actions in the sortie seem so strange. I do have a book that suggested an idea so I will look it out and post it if I can find the book...there are hundreds here and at present many are piled up in a room blocked up with furniture.
Because he was known to be neglected by the Fürher himself except for his Birthday during the mission...
Favorite lines in "Sink the Bismarck."
Royal Navy: Shoot!!!
Bismarck: Feur!!!
"so the Sheffield managed to escape without being teamkilled"
The reverberation impact from the Bismarck's own main battery fire damaged its radar? That seems like a massive design oversight if I've ever heard of one.
it is true this design flaw was going to be fixed soon but because of the gun size and power they didnt have a time to find a way to fix it before she was sunk
@Brian Roome That's not a design oversight. Literally any ship would get blown in half after getting its primary gun's magazine hit directly by a shell. The Bismarck just got lucky.
Sink the Bismarck is a great movie and an amazing song :)
And a very potent Brewdog ale
Indeed, love it. But am I alone in thinking they should remake it? Hopefully by someone who would stay true to history though
There's a sink the Bismarck movie?
+Breezy Yes, some of the clips from it were used in this video, it's an old movie, also a very good one.
I prefer Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, but it is a good song. :)
May the crews of the Bismarck rest in peace.
Let all the crews rest in peace
+Beck Rockriver too soon bruh
And to the crew of HMS Hood as well.
May all the war dead rest in peace

Someone needs to make a proper remake of "Sink the Bismarck". Whle I think Netflix would do a good job, this needs to be more of a block buster, full-release in movie theaters across the world like Saving Private Ryan. The story of the Bismarck and the other ships is an epic tale and the world needs to know about it.
196.8 million Reichsmark are roughly some 820-850 million Euros. However, to calculate how expensive the Bismarck would be today I use dollars, because it is easier to research some reliable numbers. So, back in 1938 the exchange rate Reichsmark/Dollar was 2.48:1. The dollar was subject to some nasty inflation over the last 80 years, so 1 '38 dollar are now roughly 16.43 dollars in 2016. So, _today_ this ship would cost some 1.304 billion dollars. Still cheaper than a modern carrier. ;D
Eh Jingles, why is the first picture from the Dunkerque and not from the Bismarck?
My thoughts exactly, "Why does this ship has the french flag and twice the amount of guns. Hey, that is not the Bismarck! Jingles done goofed!"
+
because he is old and crap!
In 1940, prior to the defeat, the Dunkerque and other ships (including I think the Strasbourg) was part of a Franco-English squadron to find and sink german battleships but the french ships weren't in the FFL so I don't know why they're on screen, maybe Jingles made a mistake and considered they were part of the chase.
Obviously Jingles did it to see who was awake or not, or just maybe he had alot on his plate what with games con,
oh and i think it should have been a picture of the DKM Prinz Eugen, still another great video and mesmerising audio commentary Jingles.
Funny how the Bismarck has better anti aircraft guns when in real life the Tirpitz had EXTRA AA fitted because of what happened to the Bismarck , another point about german ships is they had surprisingly accurate guns in real life NOT in game ,
The way the German range finders worked was they were mostly accurate at the start of the engagement, but would become less effective as the battle went on, whereas British range finders were less advanced but got better as the battle went on
SAABaton 169 Really? How would the German guns get less accurate? I don’t know much about naval gunnery.
@@antonyd6649 I am assuming that the turrets get raddled up so they become less acxurate as time goes on
Game balancing reasons lol
@@saabaton169 Which makes perfect sense within german naval doctrine. German battleships were never intended to go and fight the royal navy head on. They only engaged when they had an advantage or no choice to evade in time.
The goal was, similar to the pocket battleships, to be able to destroy most enemies one on one but be fast enough to evade any substential fleet. The goal was to commerce raid, not fight fleet battles.
So if your goal is to be fast and evade crippling your enemy in the first salvos and then getting the fuck out of there is perfectly fine. The german navy knew perfectly well there was no point to fight prolonged engagements against the royal navy.
And ironically in the Bsimarcks case this naval doctrien worked rather well because it DID escape the royal navy...unitl an aircraft hit the Bismarck in its one archillies heel by the luckiest torpedo hit in WW2.
What I love is when destroyers close to within 3 km on the stern, following you, thinking you're not gonna do anything and then suddenly heavy shells to the front of their wiggling and now shattered hulls.
1:25 Random picture of the Dunkirque? Why?
I noticed that as well.
Becayse Jingles....
Not sure but I think Dunkerque was involved in the original hunt for her.
+Bussian Rias Not at all. Jingles probably wanted to show a picture of Prinz Eugen... but he's Jingles and he messed up the pictures XD
As a matter of fact, Dunkerque went to hunt Graf Spee and Scharnhorst... and then after the armistice, it was Hood wich damaged Dunkerque... In a way, Bismarck avenged Dunkerque by oneshoting Hood...
When a random guy from YT teaches you more about your own countries history than each of your history teachers combined. FeelsGoodMan
Love your history lessons Mr. Jingles. ;)
Are teachers in Europe like teachers in the U.S. where they teach politically correct versions of history (instead of real history) so as to not offend anyone? LOL. (note: there are good teachers here but they all seem to be restrained by political policy.) Thank you Jingles for knowing how to research!
The only reason you learn more about it is because you're actually interested in the subject at hand and are paying attention. The majority of Bismarck's story happened over the course of a few _days._ That's not 'your country's history'.
Shaw Fujikawa It is, however, a segment of their countries history. A general survey history course will likely spend a day or two at most on WW2. So unless one has an interest in the topic or are a history major focused on Naval operations between say 1895-1955 one would likely get a glossed over paragraph on the Bismarck (and in the US maybe no mention at all).
The point is that even a 'general survey history course' (and especially each of them combined) will probably have a lot more actual historical content in it than a 15 minute-long video overviewing one warship's struggles over the course of less than a week.
+Shaw Fujikawa not really. 15 minutes on a specific topic is far more then the general over view which often misses things deemed Unimportant by the author of said coarse. 4 of jingles 15 minute talks are as informative as most college courses on the same topic.
"Nearly 18 minutes into the video and I haven't shown you how she plays..." And you know what, I hadn't noticed! Quite enjoying the Jingles War-Time Story-Time and Stats Overview. =]
Please Jingles, more historical information in your videos like this. I love your historical commentary whether it's museums or in these world of warship videos!
The fact that the royal navy sent so many ships after her shows how amazing of a ship the bismark was
No, in war you dont go for fair fights. You want to have the advantage, and numerical advantage is the best kind of advantage.
As Sir Joseph Stalin once said ," quantity has a quality of its own

*grabs pop corn and settles in to watch the vid.. Ohhhhh.. its THAT one!
How can anyone dislike History lessons with uncle Jingles? They're the best. The ship review and gameplay is just an added bonus
I free xp'd to the Bayern, and I'm working my way up to this beautiful ship. Can't wait. However, I must say, I'm enjoying the Bayern; it's also a very tough ship. In my last match I bullied a North Carolina in it. I'm not looking forward to the Gneisenau as those six guns just don't look promising.
See Expedition Bismarck by James Cameron (2002) for more. Very good docu.
I love the Bismarck may that crews RIP.
I loved that 1960 movie. Bismarck's story & Hood's encounter is one of the Atlantic most famous tale by far.
+Jingles
The full on secondary build on the Bismarck is lethal. It opens up from 11km and feels like a Cleveland HE spamming you. An enemy Bismarck with an 18 skill captain completely devastated over 66% of my health with just secondary HE spam against my Tirpitz before I reached cover from it. I would actually recommend that build for fun on the Bismarck.
The Bismarck of history and the Bismarck in this game sound totally different. The real Bismarck had very accurate guns and ineffectual AA guns, where it seems the opposite is true in the game.
ltflak Don't forget, when Bismark was designed her AA was to be able to handle the fast and more modern planes of that era and the British were lucky enough to have old rickety WW1 planes which were slower. But thise planes were at an advantage because of the AA not being able to slow down to its speed, if they were modern spitfire fighters then the British would have failed completely sea wise.
@@lachlancp2381 they weren't just slower they were constructed differently, the Swordfish was nicknamed the 'Stringbag' for a reason, a lot of those AA shells would've passed straight through and out the other side without doing real damage where they'd have taken a modern all-metal aircraft apart. Just because something's obsolete doesn't mean it's useless
@@arthurng308 How would a Flak 88 be able to depress to shoot tanks, but not aircraft NOE flying?
@@Edax_Royeaux a flak 88 is on the ground, the same height relatively as the tank,
Whereas the AA armament on the ship is placed higher up, and when the enemy planes are going barely above the waves, you can't depress the guns low enough.
From memory it was a problem that all German ships had.
@@notsureyou According to Navweaps, Bismarck's 10.5 cm FlaK 38 had a depression of -10 degrees. That's already enough to target the water from the deck. That means even submarines can be targeted which leaves aircraft nowhere to hide. This is identical depression to the USN's 5"/38 (12.7 cm) Mark 12, unquestionably the finest Dual Purpose gun of World War II.
all of the 3 survivors from the HMS Hood disliked the video
Their dead no-one can speak for them!
All the Hoods survivors grandchildren* disliked this video
Theres always one!
I stand corrected.
Im told im distantly related to one of those survivors, but thats all I know as they died a long time ago and all who knew them.
21:12 That is the best shot grouping I have ever seen and will probably ever see from a German battleship.
Even though I've read the story on the Bismarck many times and watched war documentary videos on the on the battle, listening to you tell the story was the best. Thank you for all the great videos jingles!
I learn more from Jingles than I do in history class
I know right, his history lessons are far more interesting then the fratboy behavior of other reviewers.
That's because it tends to focus on white people and that doesn't support the new political movement sadly. Heck I learn more from Jingles than even the History channel. :p
Well the History Channel has gone way down hill in the past 5 or 6 years or so... I don't see how loggers or aliens or bigfoot have anything to do with History.
I actually want to know what would happen if the Bismark made it back safely, and continued action. what other cool action would it have seen.
"Cool action"? you mean doing it's job, sinking ships and killing sailors? I would use another word besides "cool" to describe it. This wasn't a video game. It was war.
1958PonyBoy it was a wat over 60 years ago...no longer matters...it had its effect on the future, great. Id like to know how effective this thing would have been if it survived longer. What effect would it have on the war etc. Something only history nerds would ask. Guess you don't understand.
I'm a huge history nerd. And yes, it would have been interesting to hypothesize what might have happened if things had turned out differently. I'm just saying "Cool" wasn't maybe the best word to use. It shows a little indifference to the carnage inflicted. Maybe something like "Historic", "Significant", "Dramatic", "Intense", etc.
1958PonyBoy I find the better word would be intriguing.
That's good. Let's go with that.
I forgot about World of Tanks, probably for the better!!!
More World of Warships is always welcomed Jingles, your stories never get old!
When a new Jingles WoW video comes out I watch it then several hours later realize I'm on a binge watching jag. Again.
Is it just me or when jingles does these type of videos i just want to sleep because his voice is so soothing??
Hey look...a Brit admitting they didn't sink the Bismarck! what a rare coincidence!
Which isn't the truth, really. The Brits DID sink the Bismarck, pretty much all experts agree. It's just that the Germans sank her quicker.
as Ludovic Kennedy said once, "That Bismarck would sink there was no doubt, the scuttling just made sure it was sooner rather than later."
I'm paraphrasing that a bit, but you get the idea. Mr. Kennedy was/is a brit, and was an officer on HMS Tartar, a Tribal class Destroyer involved in the hunt for Bismarck (and there at the final battle) btw.
Sawyer AWR James Cameron said much the same.
So? Cameron make movies. Right? Yeah, he does. Including one about the wreck of the Bismarck. So, he's probably qualified.
Wehraboo logic: if you're dying from being stabbed to death, start stabbing yourself a couple of times too while it's happening. Then the whole situation totally won't count and you can pretend you aren't being murdered.
Bismarck was pretty much screwed when her main battery was knocked out fairly early.
Jingles you should start a series called 'War Stories with Jingles'. It would be really interesting to watch :D
Jin, penetration of Hood's armory deck is an urban legend only. Knowing the position of the ships, the distance was not enough to get a hit like that. Possibilities are: hit in a citadel, hit under the water line or the third one is that the boat deck's fire reached the ammunition.
The Battle of the Denmark Straight was my grandfather's first taste of action during WWII. Not that I think he saw much of it: his vantage point was the magazine of Y-turret aboard HMS Prince of Wales, but even from /there/ they apparently felt Hood go up.
I really enjoy the history lessons in these videos.
It had to be hell of a battle and considering all that I would say that Bismarck was really great ships and if it survived it might became even better after one or two refits.
I'm really far from being a Nazi supporter but WW2 Germany (Reich) made amazing engines of war. Not cheap, not simple but interesting and innovative.
It's a pity that most of those "amazing" weapons couldn't be made to work properly :P
+BrotherSurplice The ones that did were extraordinary. The V1 and V2 were spectacularly stupid weapons of war but they were magnificent feats of engineering. The V1 apparently had a range that extended all the way to Manchester.
Eh, the Allies had the same technological prowess as the Axis, they just didn't need to indulge in unreliable wunder-waffe.
BrotherSurplice Hey, they were made to work properly during 60's by USA and USSR. I mean all those rocket engines, night vision enhancers, jet engines, ram engines and so on were just too early into their R&D process during late years of WW2 but You are right that most of them didn't help Germans at all.
Yeah, that's what I meant.
I love the history you give when doing ship reviews.
I already knew the story of the Bismarck well, but I still enjoyed listening to you tell it.
Damn I love these video's with the historic info at the beginning
I love Jingles review always with a history lesson i love that format
Thanks for all the vids and the work that goes into them! We'll get by on Saturday without a vid.Have a great time Jingles!!!
One quick thing to add about the tale: Lindemann may have survived the salvo, as survivors reported seeing him standing at attention on the stern of the ship as she went down. He made no attempt to swim away from the foundering battleship, going down with her... one way or another.
When you're a cruiser or destroyer player and you don't know how people can be so patient to play battleships xD
That feeling when you score a citadel is awesome. Scoring multiple citadels, or annihilating a full HP ship with one salvo (even a battleship) is downright glorious. I once deleted a Tirpitz at 15km with my Colorado and...well, yeah. Happy times. ^_^
I still don't understand how there can be the patience, I've tried really hard to get into BB gameplay, but the Inconsistency of the guns is an issue for me, when i absolutely definitely HAVE to end a cruiser that gets close or need to deal with an enemy ship reliably in order to turn a game around and so on, its jsut so frustrating to lose a game or get torped to death by a cruiser because all of your well aimed salvo sailed right past it's Citadel and overpens without doing any sort of useful damage
Getting massive damage in a single salvo randomly is a rewarding feeling but I don't really see how it's possible to really carry when using a BB because usually the guns go "screw you" when i need them most
Maybe I'm just burned by the Myogi and the Kongo (Kongo is better because of the additional turret but still a pain imo) but i had the Consistency problems just as much with the Wyoming and Arkansas B, despite the massive firepower they have in case it's needed
History time with uncle Jingles! :D

Jingles should do historical podcasts, I would 10000% listen to every single episode. (Jingles if you read this please do at least one)
I adore these history stories :)
Actually Jingles...... (Sorry had too) It has been confirmed now that the Bismarck was sunk by the torpedo's launched by the Heavy Cruiser Dorsetshire. I watched a very good program where they used the latest deep water submersibles and they visited the wreck of both the Hood and the Bismarck to investigate the sinking of both ships. The Bismarck was already sinking from the torpedo damage, all the scuttling charges did was hasten the process.
Also FYI, the Hood actually broke apart into 4 piece's, The force of the explosion from the rear magazine detonation, spread a fire all the way along the hull of the ship and also detonated the forward magazine, before she had fully sank, this tore the front off of the Hood as well as blowing the whole Conning Tower clear off of the top of the ship. So this is why the Hood sank so fast, the Hull ended up in 3 major piece's with the Conning Tower also being blown clear off to make 4 piece's and was actually blown some distance away. Sadly, only 3 men survived.
Also, another random fact, When they were having trouble with sinking the Bismarck, they called the Swordfish Torpedo Bombers back in for another run to try and get the hull to finally sink, Arc Royal launched the Aircraft and they headed into Torpedo the Bismarck once more, Only to then be deliberately shot at by the King George the 5th's Anti Aircraft batteries, as the Home fleet wanted to be the ones credited with actually sinking the Bismarck as revenge for the sinking of the Hood. I couldn't believe this when I heard it, as if it wasn't for that wing of Swordfish, the fleet would never have caught the Bismarck again anyway. No one from the Royal Navy Home Fleet was court marshalled over this action.
I can find the link to the program if you're interested Jingles, I reckon you'd really enjoy it.
No it was scuttled lmao. I guess youre british arent ya? Expeditions have proven that the torpedo damage was soaken up by her ,,spaced armor" You just cant live with the thought that you havent really avenged hood. Wikipedia even says so.
yes she was flooding cause of the torpedos but the armor was spaced she wouldve never sunken completely
Actually no, the actual leader of the expedition, he's on kbismarck forums by the way, said that the expedition was inconclusive, but the British edited his documentary to make it seem like the torpedoes had done it.
you cant kill german engineering with just one torp m8, and its a BB... one torp hit kills a BB with a good anti torp armor ? dafuq m8, what are you smoking i need dat shit
Apparently scuttling an already sinking battleship makes it not count or something. Thanks to you and other Wehraboo's logic.
By that logic, Japan won Midway because they scuttled their carriers.
The fact that crews from different factions rescued the sunken ships' crews on more than one occasion during the war to me is amazing.
There was still honor in combat even in times like those.
Picking up survivors is almost an institution among the world's Navys. In the late 70's I was a junior officer on a submarine operating on the surface in the Bahamas, when we came across a small boat with a couple of local fishermen that had broken down and been adrift for 3 days. The fishermen came aboard, were fed, and given clean clothes, a rack to sleep in and access to a hot shower. We took their boat under tow. When their boat caught a wave wrong it took a nosedive to the bottom so the US Navy bought them a new (and better) boat.
Its a running joke in mah family that my grandmother sunk the Bismarck, but she did serve in the Wrens. And the Bismarck chased the troop transport that my grandfather was on as he came back from America from his pilot training! Thanks for the neat video Jangles!
For those that have never heard the song, Sink the Bismarck by Johnny Horton, its on YT: KecIdlEAKhU
thanks for the recommendation :)

Or something like that, I haven't researched more than the basics of the subject and that was a while ago.
Yeah, the GEMA is ridiculous. The most musicians dont like em either. You get the feeling that they are just there to cockblock everybody.
400 shells and a dozen torpedoes and that still didnt sink her? her own charges destroyed the Bismarck?
and that, kids, is why capital ships wont be in WT.... hope you are gonna understand one day
The Royal Navy did inflict fatal damage on the Bismarck. She was actually sinking before the scuttling charges were ordered and Dorsetshire's torpedoes were fired, just very slowly. Because of the chaos of her final moments we don't know exactly what the ultimate cause was. It's possible that it was scuttling charges, but the ship was in such bad shape and there were so many below deck fires that it's quite possible that no one was able to live long enough to actually set most of the charges. It's also possible that Dorsetshire's torpedoes were the final blow, or that it was a combination of factors. The entire question is somewhat academic, however, as Bismarck would have sunk regardless as a result of the gunfire damage.
Jingles is also possibly incorrect on how Hood was sunk. Admiral Holland had taken her thin deck into account and charged in to fight at close range so shells were more likely to hit her side armor, which was roughly equal to an R or Queen Elizabeth class battleship. The problem was that at those ranges Bismarck's guns were powerful enough to punch clean through Hood's belt armor also. It's possible that the shell went through Hood's deck, but more likely given the (relatively) short range it went through the belt. Regardless, it was a million to one shot that would have sunk pretty much any battleship afloat at the time.
@@Ralph-yn3gr sure... no demage below the waterline... but she was some how sinking...
23GreyFox A shell had penetrated the Bismarck in the bow above the waterline and went straight through and out the other side during its fight with HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales. Wouldn’t be a problem normally but due to the intense weather and the fact that the ship was bouncing up and down in the water, thousands of gallons of water was pouring into the ship. It didn’t sink him but it forced the Bismarck to slow down due to it listing to the side.
@@Ralph-yn3gr the shell that sunk Hood could only be a side armour strike.... At the fighting range the angle of the shell trajectory would be (estimated) at around 14 to 17 degrees! To blow up the Hood, it had to penetrate the belt! Otherwise its trajectory would've been over or under the Magazines by a few feet (enough to be not blown up)! A somewhat lucky shot! And it is proven that the Bismarck was scuttled, even if the torpedos hit, they did not inflicted enough damage to the Bismarck (all Torpedo Bulkheads are intact, there is a documentary by James Cameron )! And in the Hill were only a few penetrations (7 or 8), of which most dealt not great damage (only one hit from Rodney was a citadel)
As far as I know the Bismark was sunk by the torps of one of the cruisers, after it was shot at for the last 10 hours
13:30 I have to say, I'm impressed you said that. Espacially people from the UK usually insist that Royal Navy ships sunk the Bismarck with torpedos.
Despite the fact that latest research on the wreck showed that the torpedo hits did no major damage to the hull of the Bismarck which could have actually sunk it.
Underlining that the german side of the story about sinking it with scuttling charges is most likely the correct one.
You even had the video bits about RN torpedos sinking the Bismarck (13:58) in you video.
This is the first warship I really knew, thanks to Heroes in the Sky (something like that). There was the mission Operation Rheinubung and I loved that mission. Sinking a big fat ship.
🎤we gotta sink the Bismarck to the bottom of the sea🎤

ou mean the "WG NA office screwed you guys over QB's codes and breaks the NDA constantly" rant? Jingles actually apologised for that one right in his nest Mingles video...
By the way as far as i'm concerned, there was nothing to apologise for as far as the NDA part goes, he specifically said he doesn't blame NA Community Contributors or Supertesters but purely the NA office but still he had to apologise... to all the CCs and STs who felt offended... The only thing he had to apologise (and did so) to the good guys at NA office was the QB bonus code f*ck-up, which was purely WG EU's fault.

eeh... that was contest entry and Jingles, despite quite liking the video (its content, to be precise) disqualified it because of the autism refference... not really reason to un-sub Jingles :)

So... you are offended by someone calling people "autists" without actual medical proof of their mental condition but you still call those people "stupid"? Aren't you offending actual stupid (i.e. mentally challenged) people? I sense some ouble standards over there y'know...
the mighty jingles nice to see that you know your history most people I talk to don't even know what the Bismarck is
Just got mine from the sink the Bismarck event. Loving it's game play thus far.
If you liked this ship, just wait until you get a chance to max out the Gnesenau (SP). The German T7 BB is a mini Tirpitz.....fast (32knts)...good guns...better AA than the Bismarck....and torpedoes! Oh, and no chance of crappy T10 matches.....
Jingles how do you get those Pen/Bounce icons above your mini map?
option in the settings
I was wondering myself. Tks going into settings right now.
I've subscribed to your channel 4 years ago. the way you tell the stories is better than many documentary programs and you doing it alone, I'll be always watching your videos. And I like it very much. o7
Faisal,

my new sleep schedule of going to bed around 7 and getting up around midnight seems to be paying off. i can watch jingles before work
1:25 Isn't that the Dunkerque? What is the connection?
Suddenly, a wild Dunkerque-class fast battleship appears!
Bismarck uses 38 cm SK C/34 guns...
It's super effective!
Jingles fucked up, he probably wanted to show Prinz Eugen but put the wrong picture in the video XD
Was wondering the same thing. The Prince Eugen, a Admiral Hipper class Heavy Cruiser, only had 2x4 20.3cm main guns so its not the Prince Eugen. Its not the MSwMS Gotland, she was a Light Cruiser. Its not the Bismark, again 2x4 38cm main guns. Thanks Pinco, I was at a loss as to what that ship was, and now I wonder why its even in this clip.
The answer is: Jingles has made a mistake. :P
That's actually the Swedish Cruiser Gotland, the ship that first reported her position.
I love storytime with Rear Admiral Jingles
I love History with Jingles, you can feel the passion behind his words. This is my second favourite next to your video on the HMS Warspite.
If I could make a request? I'd thoroughly enjoy hearing you talk about 588th Night Bomber Regiment, The Night Witches.
Amazing video, as always.
Jingles: “...in company with the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen.”
Shows a photo of French battleship Dunkerque.
Priceless.
The only evidence to suggest that the Bismark was scuttled was from an account from a single survivor from the engineering section. Frankly the suggestion is ludicrous. Bar his account, all evidence points to Bismark being sunk by flooding from shells and torpedoes, some of which penetrated her deck as she listed. Scuttling charges and sea cocks do not make a ship keel over. Torpedoes and shells do. If somehow some lunatic had followed the supposed order to scuttle the ship, and had somehow managed to find his way through mangled and burning, and flooding compartments, and was successful in setting charges and opening the sea cocks, he simply hastened the end of an already sinking ship.

History is propaganda now?
Sometimes history is propaganda, yeah. Written by the winners and all that.
in this case....you know, thinking this int accurate is like thinking man never landed on the moon
scarcroBF3
It's guaranteed to be almost completely accurate. There will always be little inaccuracies due to people misremembering small details after the fact.
The only thing I sorta default to doubting the accuracy of is any time a military account claims that the enemy 'fought to the last man'... That's usually code for "we ignored their frantic attempts to surrender, but admitting that is a war crime, so erhm... They valiantly _refused_ to surrender."
The Prinz Eugen was used in nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll. It survived the atomic blasts It was towed to Kwajalein Atoll, where she broke the tow line capsized and sank. The wreck is still there partially visible above the water approximately two miles northwest of Bucholz Army Airfield, on the edge of Enubuj. One of her propellers was salvaged and is on display.
I gave your video a thumbs up, and I am glad that You like to make historical, and story telling video's about the ships. You could have not put in the picture of the French Battleship as it had little to do with the Bismarck. All in all it was a good synapsis though.
So does the Bismark's anti-sir have a penalty against lower tier planes? I seem to recall that she couldn't hit the Swordfish cause they were moving too slowly for the guns track accurately as the German's hand not imagined anyone would be using anything that slow anymore.
You are correct.I believe the swordfish were travelling at 90 knts and the German guns were calibrated for speeds well over 100 knts, a cunning plan by the British.
+R Nacnud It's a little known fact that the Swordfish was a prototype for a helicopter.
It's one of the great ironies of WW2. Despite facing four battleships during that campaign, several cruisers and many destroyers, the Bismarck was ultimately doomed by planes that were hopefully obsolete. The Taranto strike, which gave the Japanese the idea to attack Pearl Harbour, was also done by Swordfish biplanes. I have no idea why the British were using such old aircraft when they had some of the best naval aviators outside Japan, but there you go.
The British did not have the largest of carriers so planes with slow stall speed for landing such as biplanes were preferred.Imagine an F18 landing on such a small ship without modern arrester gear.
SPLASH
That^ and the fact that you need a stable platform for bombing/torpedoing a target and while the swordfish were outdated, slow and not as maneuverable as other planes of the time they were stable and could carry the weight of the torps whereas other planes couldn't do as well plus replacing a entire air arm of the navy would have been both horrifically expensive and time consuming and we were playing for time in 1939-41.
Umm... actually Jingles... :P
You used a picture of the Dunquerque, not the Bismarck. ;)
Thank you Jingles, for the historical lesson, i like the story and the movie.
Just love my Bismarck! I'm using the secondary build with 10.6km range, it's so fun! Think I've killed like at least 10-15 ships with them since yesterday when I got the ship.

Love the detailed history and analysis Jingles does. :).
God Jingles you butchered the poor mans name
Lütjens is not pronounced Leutjens ^^
I don't really know a word in english that is pronounced like the Ü in Lütjens.
And KMS, really Jingles really?
KMS means Kaiserliches Marine Schiff (Imperial Navy Ship) that was wwi
In WWII its DKM which means deutsche Kriegsmarine (German Wat navy)
No, the Kaiserliche Marine used SMS.
How dare you point out the mighty overlord's mistakes? Back to the salt mines with your filthy mouth!
+Rainbowlicious i never said they didn't
I just said that KMS has to be wwi as after that there was no Kaiser anymore
+darwin chan baing a german i have the right to point out mistakes to our overlord concerning german stuff ^^
And i did this from the salt mines
I'm sorry Jingles, but you really need to work on your aim.
You can't honestly be complaining about missing shots even on Iowas at ~10km range when you in fact ELEVATE your aim against a target that's actually steering slightly towards you, i.e.: REDUCING the distance between the two of you (check relative minimap position!). Of course most of those shots are going to sail straight over your target or bounce from the deck armour due to hitting at such oblique angles. Had you delevated to correctly adjust your aim, you would get noticably better results. Only at much closer ranges (~6km or less) one should aim a bit above the waterline because the ingame auto-correction can be incredibly wanky (and in your case that rewarded you with two citadels).
Now to be perfectly fair, the typical german battleship guns accuracy at long and medium ranges still isn't much write home about compared to others of the same class, it's definately not as bad as you think and tell it is.
He will never learn to aim...he's jingles.
He'll continue to shoot randomly and when it hits it was his great aim and when it doesn't it was the ships accuracy :)
FritzZeGerman: Well, that just makes him your average WoWs player, which he claims to be. :)
He claims he's an above-average player, actually. :P
+Shaw Fujikawa That's his main problem actually....he claims to be awesome but then he shows gameplay ^^
+FritzZeGerman I've never heard him claim to be "awesome". And as for being above average.... well have you seen the standard "average" player? That's me and I'm Crap. :D
As a very young boy, I will never forget reading "The sinking of the Bismark". Hell. That was 4th grade. My son is older now than I was then. I was listening to Kansas' 'Power' album for white noise back then. Christ we are getting old, sir. The book was a great read and it's stuck with me. The Kansas album...Eh, not so much. Great to see they are finally putting in the boats I've been waiting for. I'm still really anxious to see the British boats. Damn well better have the Hood.
My understanding was the Bismarck IRL had a major flaw in its antiaircraft system. I had heard one place stays at the guns weren't sequenced properly and then another place said that the guns were computerized and couldn't slow down enough to track the Swordfish properly. Somehow I figured the game would compensate for this.
ALL TOGETHER NOW!
Deutschland, Deutschland über alles!
The last true Germany - 1933-1945
You know that verse is, how shall I put it... frowned upon in Germany? It's actually kind of insensitive if someone spouts that to a German.
***** Not really... In fact, I personally hate trying to be politically correct almost all the time. I'm just simply stating a fact. I'm not saying I personally find that verse insensitive/offensive, however, others, particularly from the country/culture in question, can and will find it so. If you try to pin a label on someone, make sure you have enough information or evidence backing your claim up to make it stick.
the funny thing is; this part isnt even the problematic part
DammalleNamenweg The first verse as a whole is viewed negatively in Germany. In fact, they will rarely, if ever, actually sing it. Instead, they skip the first verse when they sing the national anthem.
Im german, and i support the notion that the British sank Bismark. whoever delt the final blow. It was disarmed and immobilised. It got caught and beaten by a bigger force. Had the crew not scuttled it, the rn would have finished it within the day. It was an instrument of evil being used for evil purposes, and it got beat by instruments of relative good. Sorry for poor english.
***** I belive jingle's response to that would be "Cry more princess, i feast on your tears". Ill stick with that xx
"We British voted the war loving psycho out straight after the war for a reason!"
Who's 'we'? You were never around during the war. Churchill was voted in for a second term in office a few years later, anyway, so this point is moot regardless.
Regardless of what the final blow was -- torpedoes or scuttling charges -- to actually *sink* her below the waves, the Royal Navy hunted her down and *destroyed* her. She was a burning wreck already sinking slowly. Her crew just sped the process up. The RN would not have tried boarding and capturing her, or towing the still-floating hulk back to Britain.
Don't bring good and evil into it. This ain't biblical. The Bismarck was a fine ship with a fine crew. Were there Nazis among the crew? Probably. She was a warship. A ship of war. The most powerful strategic asset a nation had, before carriers and nuclear weapons. This ship was unfortunately in the service of a warped dictator's regime and his bid for world dominance.
"She was on the wrong side of history".
what evil purpose, and what relative good?
Bubo 25
Then why was he voted back? If the British public so clearly saw him as the warmonger he was, that surely would not have happened?
I absolutely love this type of Jingles video. Historical context and some gameplay; it really makes things quite lively, more of this please!
PS: Be a good little boy and get a proper (side)job creating audio books :p
Let's remember that naval legend with great respect. Bismarck done his duty with honor and now lying solid under the waves.
