If I could only listen to one metal band the rest of my life it would be Megadeth.
And it’s consistent
You can always rely on them to make music that you’ll listen to
Amen brother 🙏 🙌
The Greatest metal song ever
Absolutely! 16 albums and counting.
@@wompa70 👌🙏🙌
in my opinion this song alone is more complex than metallicas whole discography.
pretty much why i found myself drawn to megadeth over metallica they just offer something that for me metallica couldn’t
This whole album is a metal masterpiece. you can't go wrong with "Hangar 18" or "Tornado of Souls" from Rust In Peace either.
it took me 2 weeks just to learning that fckin riff
I tend to agree, although And Justice for All is a masterpiece too.
Mustaine is arguably the godfather of thrash metal, the influence of his frenetic and frantic way of playing can be heard all over kill 'em all, that and his own work in megadeth would go and influence so many guitar players who never had heard metal being played that way
My first time hearing Megadeth. Turn it up !! 🔥🔥🔥
And that good Sir is the only proper reaction to hearing Megadeth for the first time 🤘
Welcome to the club, my friend. Start with the 80's, and work to the 90's. Greatness.
The whole album is a thrash metal masterpiece. Many Epic songs: Hangar 18, Lucretia, Five magics, Tornado of Souls & Rust in peace...Polaris
and Poison Was The Cure! don't forget that!
@@dimebag_jack105 and Take No Prisoners!!
Lucretia!
This is my first time hearing Megadeth as well. New fan 😳🔥
Enjoy going down the megadeth rabbit hole. Plenty of great music to keep you interested.
Slayer
Welcome. The best Thrash Metal band ever.
Too many good songs to name
You just struck on gold my friend
This entire album is legendary. This song is considered by many to be the greatest metal song. 🔥
I did the math....it checks out. This is the greatest metal song.
According to whom ?
is good but you are exagerating
@@bobbyball77 indeed you cant argue with the math its all there!!!
@@bobbyball77You’re absolutely right 💯. As soon as the opening riff hits, it’s game over.
Dave Mustaine (singer and guitarist) was originally the lead guitarist for Metallica, they kicked him out due to substance abuse just before they recorded Kill Em All, and he was replaced by Kirk Hammett, alot of the music on Kill Em All and some on Ride The Lightning was written by Mustaine and was pissed when they used it, he formed Megadeth just to get back at Metallica, for 20 years there was nothing but rivalry between the two bands, but they've made up since then
You ever heard of Slander? He was not kicked out for substance abuse. They all did drugs and drank, Dave unfortunately was a violent drunk and that caused Lars to get nervous because he would get into fights and Lars was a little Bee otch. Then there was the incident where James Hetfield kicked Dave’s Pitbull puppy for chewing on a bass guitar and Dave knocked him out. At that point James and Lars started looking for his replacement. On a long road trip to New York is when they fired him and dropped him off at the bus station with his dog and no money. And that the very short story about what happened
he wasn't kicked out for substance abuse, they all drank a ton, the problem was that the rest of the band would get stupid when they got drunk while dave got violent when he got drunk
Mechanix is better
Metallica didn't give a f about Megadeth 😂 Megadeth tried so hard to be better
@@ooop8725 and they succeeded. There is no question Megadeth has made better music. There is no question that early metalica success was the influence of Dave’s musical style. Metalica cared enough about Megadeth that James taught or tried to teach Kirk the Spider Cord technique. You are confusing pop popularity with quality of music. I’d be stupid to argue that Megadeth is more popular because that is not reality. Same goes for saying Metalica is better than Megadeth, only someone stupid would claim that.
Best lineup megadeth ever had. NickMenza drums, mustaine/Marty Friedman guitars and Ellefson on bass. God I miss them
I am a huge fan of the band. They have a big cataloge of good songs, in my opinion. A couple weeks ago I counted trough their discography and I came up with over 100 songs that I actually like by them. I can't do that with no other band 😁
And the list keeps growing... Everytime I go back to listen the cathalog I find new gems, is really outstanding...
10 seconds in “oh lord”
That is what Megadeth is. That is the feeling you get. Frenetic. Great description.
Megadeth are the Goats of Thrash Metal hands down. RIP Nick Menza the drummer. This song is best heard with the music video because the visuals of the band are amazing to watch. Usually videos suck compared to the songs but the video to this makes the song experience even better.
Dude.. Calm down. Megadeth is awesome, but "kings of thrash"?! Slayer exists, mate.
Have u ever seen the uncut/unedited video for Holy Wars? Dave Elefson said it best about the video; "unedited sick s**t".
@@sirsancti5504 calm down? No actually it’s a fact and they are still making dope music today. Slayer is in the big 4 and they are good but the GOATS? Your in the minority bloke.
I had fun watching a complete stranger discovering the music I’ve loved since I was a thirteen year old boy and digging it. Thank you for posting it idk how it came up but you’ve thoroughly made my day and it’s only five a.m.
Had the pleasure of seeing them live in 91 on the RUST IN PEACE Tour. Nick Menza was just drenched in sweat
This is my favorite song of all time for a reason. Whenever I take the time to just really listen to the song without any distractions and just freaking listen, I get chills. It’s such a masterpiece of songwriting and as a musician, the sheer complexity is so incredible and I have so much respect for Dave Mustaine for being able to play these riffs while singing.
Absolutely. Someone might say, that's some good guitar. But add the fact that the singer is playing it and it takes to another level.
The look on your face when it first kicked in says it all. That's the universal "wow this kicks ass" look that everyone gets when they hear it haha I remember when I did it for the first time. It blew me away how good it was.
You should check out tornado of souls by them its on this same album and most of the metal community agrees it has on of the best guitar solos off all time
Leader Dave Mustaine was the original lead guitar for Metallica along with some of the song writing and lyrics for Metallica's first 2 studio albums especially kill them all. The hero for both bands originally was Metallica's late great bassist Cliff Burton. He knew music theory and really showed the guys how to put music together in a well structured manner. Heavily influenced Master of puppets.
Also only joined the band because Dave being Dave drove the old bassist out of the band. Cliff isn't part of the band without Dave.
Also, Dave Mustaine's songwriting appears on Metallica's "Master of Puppets" album as well. Look it up.
@@chucksmash1 No you look it up he ha no credits on the album at all
@@preciousroihomeshoppingnet7908 Not true James and Lars planned to get cliff anyway even Ron knew what they were doing
Cliff taught James music theory but he did no arranging and wrote barely anything he was just a great bass player
oh man I am so excited that you checked out metal! So I can tell you the effect on the guitar that you were talking about (8:34ish) is the sound of the strings bending. Lots of metal guys played with Floyd Rose tremolos. it's a guitar bridge- won't nerd out on this. Anyway, it lets the player do these dive-bomb kind of string bends. So as that tone is getting deeper, it's because the mechanism in the floyd rose allows the player to bend all the strings by pulling or pushing on a metal arm: the whammy bar. Yep they're called that.
The tempo changes and contrasting intensity that are common in metal are most likely the influence of the hardcore movement in the 1980s. I am skipping over (sadly) important bands like Iggy and the Stooges and MC5 from the 1970s in the interest of brevity. While the Sex Pistols and the Clash were playing punk rock that was basically up tempo stripped down rock and roll riffs, American bands were playing much less orthodox riffs that played with dissonance and favored aggressive playing. East coast and Midwest bands tended to be the most aggressive and intense. That is until Black Flag happened. If there is 1 song from that era I think you NEED to check out, it's called "The Bars." Black Flag is THE quintessential California hardcore band. Bloody amazing. There are many other bands from the west coast worth checking out, but have to skip them here.
This style was really built around the mosh pit. The parts where the tempo slows down are what I'd describe as the creepy crawly movement in the pit. People are moving in a circle probably with intense but slower movements. Then the band goes hard and all hell breaks loose.
That whole mosh pit thing is common to punk, metal, post punk, alternative, and grunge to name a few. In our case here, bands like MOD, DRI, SOD, Cro Mags, Agnostic Front, WarZone, etc lived somewhere between raw and unpolished hardcore to very precise and very fast speed and thrash metal.
Out of the thrash metal bands of the 1980s came the big 4 of American metal: Anthrax (from NY, a little goofy, more thrash oriented. great band), Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. They all have that common origin in aggressive punk and hardcore and they all take it in different directions.
All of those bands are interesting and very talented. I would encourage you to explore the sort of metal that happened in the UK, specifically Iron Maiden. They are theatrical, historically dense, operatic metal, and they are BRILLIANT. I suggest Powerslave as a starting point. That album doesn't have a bad song on it. They have a live album called Live After Death that is tremendous. it covers about 3 albums worth of highlights (Power Slave, Peace of Mind, and Number of the Beast). Bro, please enjoy your journey. I hope this helps!
The genuine smile when the band kicks in 😄, welcome to Megadeth!
There's a vid of the the drummer Nick Menza playing this in a studio on here, check it out 👍
This song made me realize how inferior I was on guitar at the age of 16 trying to Learn this track
The second part of this song is actually about the punisher from the comic books 😁
You got to do more Megadeth. Others are suggesting great songs my personal faves
Wake up Dead
Hangar 18
Tornado of souls
Five magics
Sweating bullets
Countdown to Extinction
Dave took everyone to school with this album. It is simply the best of its time and since. Technical, skilled, beautiful, and always on the verge of self-combustion.
Congratulations you've discovered Dave Mustaine the man who made metallica famous
Dave was in Metallica for a year or less when they were still a practice band.
@@tallycahamuhlhetru26 doesn't change the fact they used all his music on the first demo after they kicked him out..." The man that metallica couldn't handle"
@@williamhartman5977 All? Exaggerate much? Lol
Haha don't talk rubbish. His extremely FEW song contributions did NOT make them famous in the slightest no that would be Lars James Kirk and cliffs work.
Dave co wrote Metallica's least interesting and mid songs
@@imagereflection4826 I agree with the first part but “mid songs”? Lets be honest, the songs Mustaine wrote are the best songs on the album
Marty Friedman employed the great “Phrygian Major” scale in his guitar work throughout this album. It is of Arabic/Eastern origin. When he gets into it (such as in the Hangar 18 solos) it sounds like two aliens throwing counterpoints at each other!
I love the complete reign in blood album holy wars is my favorite metallica song on it
Welcome to the amazing world of Megadeth. You will find the lyrics to very deep and meaningful on a lot of songs so have them handy. Rust and Peace Sells are my 2 favorite albums by them.
I would love to see your reaction to Hook In Mouth. It will blow your mind. Too long a list for recommendations.
PS. Love your channel.
You do your research- accurately, thank you, great work sir
My Favorite Band and Album EVER!!! 🙌🏽🔥❤️🤘🏽
Ive been listening since day 1 to them, its so funny and refreshing because its like hearing it the first time again watching reaction video's. Ive yet to see anyone not be f@cked up hard first time hearing Holy Wars, among so many other Megadeth masterpieces. Love it!
I was born in 1976, which put me as 18 in 1995, so I was mid teens for this music, just the right time to have been born to not have missed this or been born so far before it to not recognize the talent of this music. This many years later the hair on the back of my head still stands up listening megegadeth. Oh, and there's a reason you hear metallica in Megadeth's music, that's because the singer here and rhythm guitarist was the lead guitarist for Metallica, they kicked him from the the band and used his music for their first two CD's.
I was born in 1970. I saw it all. You saw most of it.
Welcome in every Metal club in the world, no matter your style. One of the all-time greats in my opinion.
some of my favourite riffs ever.
Great job as always Syed. I like that you do some research before hearing the song. I appreciate what you do! Stay awesome!
The first time I heard what this song was about, it made me like it even more because I have full Irish heritage.
From an Interview with Dave about the incident in County Antrim
"These guys were having more fun than I was, even though I had already seen a couple of drinking partners smile all the way down. I had a shot of schnapps and some of everything else and went back out.
"Full of everything and looking out at the crowd, a song I had heard by Paul McCartney popped into my mind, and I thought, 'If it's good enough for Sir Paul, it's good enough for me.'
"I walked up to the microphone and said, 'Give Ireland back to the Irish. This one is for the cause.' We slammed into the Sex Pistols song Anarchy In The UK, which we altered to Anarchy in Antrim for the occasion.
"It was like I had set off a bomb in the audience. It divided the crowd right down the middle, Protestants and Catholics.
"We were escorted out of town that night in a bulletproof bus, although I still didn't realise the enormity of my gaffe."
A day later, Dave started writing the lyrics to Holy Wars which would feature on their album Rust in Peace and reached number 24 in the UK charts and the Top 10 in the Republic.
Love your reaction ❤
Megadeth - Nice! Welcome one and all the event horizon has been crossed and Syed is officially orbiting along its edge.
Megadeth’s first 2 albums are so metal/funky….never gets old 🤘🏼
You should really do The Mechanix off their first album, Dave used to be in Metallica and they performed that song (it even appears on the No Life Til Leather demo), but after kicking Dave out of the band right before recording Kill Em All they changed the arrangement to become The Four Horseman. Dave included The Mechanix on the album specifically as a “fuck you” to Metallica, I’d love to see what you think of the original compared to the far more developed Four Horseman. In My Darkest Hour, Five Magics, Peace Sells, and Hangar 18 would also be awesome
Other standouts: "Symphony of Destruction", "Forclosure of a Dream" and the song that follows Holy Wars, "Hangar 18" which goes just as hard in my opinion. That whole album is sick, though. But i think they put the 1st two tracks at the beginning of the album for good reason.
4:05 Dave Mustaine wrote this song after he said "Give Ireland back to the Irish" at a concert in Northern Ireland and it caused a riot between the Catholics and Protestants. What he's saying in this line is that when people think of "holy wars" they think of Israel and Palestine, but as he said, "It might be your homeland," such as in Northern Ireland or even America.
You know its a great track when Syed says "Turn it up!! love, Love, LOVE it!!
I'd love to see your take on my personal favourite Megadeth song "In My Darkest Hour" (the original version, not the remaster) :)
“Riff Maker” exactly!
This is Terry VonCannon. Holy Wars is an awesome thrash song. You need to listen to Hangar 18 which the Megadeth guys consider their greatest piece. Super creative and extremely hard to play by their own account.
The rabbit hole that is the metal is a deep one. Have fun!
One of my favs off this album is 5 magics and if you your mind really blown good morning/black Friday
Mustaine is a gift from god. This man is rage and anger personified, and all those elements are reflected in the way he plays. His sound is frantic, dangerous and emotional. That's what makes his music so cathartic
Those 2 tracks linked are brilliant. I saw this live in 1991 when they toured with Testament and Judas Priest when it was released and........ oh man.
HIGH POWER!!! Pardon the caps
I'm head banging @ 73 🤯
Metallica and Megadeth didn't do a "renaissance" of metal. They pushed the boundaries of what existed then.
Specifically, their music was at first described as "speed metal", and later renamed as "thrash metal", which is a mixture between heavy metal and punk.
Both were part of what was called the "Big Four of american thrash metal", along with Slayer and Anthrax.
I forgot abr "speed metal"
That drummer is Nick Menza !
The first five albums are awesome and really show the maturation of the band.
Greatest metal song ever made
Well worth your while to check out more from Megadeth!
One of the more consistent discogs in the Thrash sub-genre.
Thanks for the share and your insight!👍😎
Great job, love this song, but I got to say your song you play at the ends is my favorite. Samurai champloo
Dave Mustaine was one of the original members of Mettalica.
Considered one of the top 3 thrash albums next to Slayer reign in blood and Metallicas master of puppets. Rip drummer Who died on stage a few years ago (Nick Menza).
I wish we had your reaction the moment you learned why D. Mustaine started Megadeth. 😂
Nice hearing your thoughts on Holy Wars. Thanks.
RIP NICK MENZA
..added me a new mid/high amp to my car. The solo in this song loud af gives me tears, it sounds so, damn, good...😭
I wish all reaction channels would look up lyrics and background info on the song. This is the first video I've seen on your channel, but I subbed just for that. Maybe some band background info would help, as you would've learned what you will from the comments about Dave being an original member of Metallica. Haha. Either way, great reaction!
Nevermind, left the comment while watching and saw that you gave them a goog at the end. Didn't show the Metallica association. But that's not on you. So I pretty much appreciate your whole approach to reactions!
You may find the cryptic writings or risk albums more accessible as they were written to be commercially successful. Some good songs on them
Can't wait to see the look on your face when you discover Sanctuary, that Mustaine produced (first album) that later morphed into Nevermore ..
The virtuoso Loomis who auditioned for Megadeth at age 16, that that job going to Friedman ..
Your journey has just begun!
In my 30-plus years of playing guitar I never once heard anybody say "wow how neat is that riff"
4:35 It reminds you of Metallica because Dave Mustane of Megadeth was in Metallica, he formed Megadeth after being “kicked out” (or his leaving was mutually decided, depending on who you hear the story from), further more Dave Mustane sued Metallica for using music he wrote and not crediting him for the songs.
Sued Metallica?? Mustaine did no such thing.
Never sued never needed to

Got to do tornado of souls for your next megadeth song
4:48 kinda, though Dave Mustaine, the founder and only original member of Megadeth, was originally the lead guitarist of Metallica. That's why they sound similar.
They came out around the same time along with testament, overkill, suicidal tendencies
Hoping you would get to them. Good Mourning Black Friday next. Slip in Painkiller by Judas Priest someday. Banger Big Time.
Now tornado of souls 🫡
the band of my life
Btw the indian headbop is kicking in the intro 😅
When you ask about what effect is on Mustaine's solo, that's kind of the amazing thing about it. He actually used very minimal effects and not even such crazy distortion by metal standards, but on that big solo he basically just turns up the gain and lets it rip. But the sound you describe as "like the strings are gonna come off" is pretty much just Dave's amazing riffs and blinding speed. You can't fake that with effect pedals. Trust me, I've tried 🤣🤘🏼
The best forever
Imagine if Cliff had joined Dave 😮😮😮 oh the music they’d have made!!!!!
Holy wars.. is 1 of there most known songs. SOOOO DA.m.n goooood....Da Shaiiiiit...😅
Best workout music there is !
Another great reaction would be Hook In Mouth, one of my favorites of all time
The reason early Mettalica sounds like this, is because Dave taught James Hetfield his own Spider Cord technique, which allows a guitarist to move up and down the neck of the guitar faster. It’s just a placement of the fingers in the neck that allows you to get from string to string with less space to cover on the neck. There is video of James Hetfield teaching Kirk Hammet, Dave’s Spider Cord which James knew they would need to play all of Dave’s riffs on Kill Em All and Ride the Lightening. In the video however it shows James getting pissed because Kirk couldn’t get the Spider Cord and also Kirk is more of a Wah Wah pedal using guitarist who had never been known for his shredding speed.
Wow this is total nonsense! There I sno video of James teaching kirk the spider chord technique, which by the way Dave didn't invent and Metallica don't use. Metallica sounds like they do because of James's style of writing nothing to do with Dave
Rust in Peace , Countdown , Youthanasia, Cryptic albums blows away ...And Justice , Black ,Load albums without a fight.
In Metallica defense, Mustain, Elifson, Friedman , Menza is the all star , the best lineup of Megadeth ... technical players that can write as a unit.
I was a Metallica fan until Master. .....Justice , I was 50/50 ....when Black came out and compared to R .I .P , it's a clear winner and the hype of Friedman and Menza seals it for me 🤘
The greatest band ever!
Nick Menza was an absolute shredder. This album sits atop the thrash Pinnacle
the reason they sound similar is because dave mustaine from megadeth was the lead guitarists in metallica before kirk hammet
The 🐐
Check out my favorite ....Symphony of destruction. Classic!
Would love to see you react to Alter Bridge ….Sin After Sin. Fantastic track….grinding bass and guitar.
Isn't Dave credited with half the "Kill em all" album? At least 3 i know, and i believe it"s actually 4.....
And Metallica used his music / writing on Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Dave has said this in the past. No royalties either.
@@re8746 Nope he wrote 2 riffs on RTL and absolutely nothing on MOP.
And got royalties for his very few contributions from day 1
Rust and peace is a masterpiece 🤘🏽
He was the one who started metallica.
No he wasn't
You should react to “she-wolf, rude awakening live” you’ll definitely get a lot of what this band is made of🤟
After hearing anything Metallica coming up on radio or somewhere else, I tend to quickly put Holy Wars on or the whole Rust in Peace album. Just as a reminder of what is passable and what is greatness.
The vocalist/guitatist/main songwriter's first band was named Panic, before he joined Metallica, lol.
Yea they were basically a glam band
@Mirror Image , no they weren't. Just because Dave wore a Leopard print shirt, odes not make them glam.
@@profanepersonality And the original Mechanix and jump in the fire with their glam lyrics
You said Metallica gave Megadeth the blueprint, but it was Dave who first gave the blueprint to Metallica. Look at the writing credits on Kill Em' All and in Ride the Lightning.
No he helped write very few songs but Lars taught him all the bands that shaped his writing
You HAD TO have known that Dave played when Seek & Destroy came out - unless you are some sort of Sonic Master? ;)
Dave didn't write or play on that song
I listen to nearly all sub genres of metal, and Megadeth is still always the shit to me. Love them.
Kill em all was megadeths first album basically
How? Dave only wrote 3 and 1/2 songs on it 😅. A megadeth album without Dave and with mostly James hetfield written songs, lyrics and vocals .. weird
Check out Hangar 18 of the same album. Dave is the man
A lot of old Deicide songs had solos like towards the end. I always called it the Satanic Turkey, lol.
