I know that Maynard’s syllables are counting up in the fibonacci sequence and then counting back down. There are parts of the song where the instruments seem almost like crickets. Random chaos that seems to fit somehow. I think it’s pretty funny that Maynard lets the fans know that the song is orchestrated around the fibonacci sequence, and then lays a chorus on you “overthinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind.” Not only quit overthinking the song, but quit overthinking and self sabotaging your life. You will just leave opportunities behind.

He has called himself out for it on two different Joe Rogan podcasts, even calling it “sophomoric” and saying “I can do better.” Lol Whatever that song is badass with a badass concept, killer timings, heart-wrenching melodic structure (i know music nerds will get me on my use of the word melody), and inspired/ing lyrics!

I love the song, and when I say it’s pretty funny I mean it. Even though this band is extremely talented, cryptic, esoteric, deep, and inspirational, they have a great sense of humor. I think most people are afraid to react to Hooker with a Penis, because of the title. Everyone that does react to it though has a good chuckle. There’s a UA-cam video out there called Tool funny moments, and it’s pretty awesome to see how they don’t take themselves too serious. They were big fans of Bill Hicks, and he even opened for them a few times as well as Tenacious D. Maynard and Adam were even on an episode of Mr. Show, which was a freaking hilarious skit comedy show back in the 90s with David Cross and Bob Odenkirk. Most people probably wouldn’t think they have a great sense of humor, especially if they’ve only heard their early stuff.

My brother took me to see Tool back in 2002 in Baton Rouge, La. They were epic! This was his favorite song, and it has a very special place in my heart. My brother suffered from clinical depression, and on January 31, 2013 he filmed himself playing this song on his bass guitar that he loved so much to put on UA-cam. It would be his last performance. He took his life the very next day. I am his older sister by two years and we were extremely close. I will cherish his video, it's the last thing I have from him. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece! This song has a ton of subtle references. The first colors or shades we see as humans are black and white. As the juxtaposition of syllables to the fibbonaci sequence grows "red and yellow then came to be" our vision and perception of reality, our out ward perception as light reaches us, "reaching out to me, let's me see", grows and diminishes as does all life . I've always seen this song as a story of life and conscious existence. The appreciation for the experience. Recognizing that birth and death are a part of that journey. Our perception of reality is nil pre inception and nil after death as well. 0 being the first number of the sequence creates a conceptual beginning and end of the sequence not expressed vocally as there is an absence of experience or life.
Biology has taken this "ordering" or reality and used it to create spirals and fractals. One way of defining a fractal is an infinitely space filling curve. Thus we get nature and biology's developement of efficiency and optimization. Spirals use less resources in growth and optimize surface area for nutrient absorption. Fractals and spirals lead us to chaos theory and entropy. The golden ratio can be derived from the fibbonaci sequence and when plotted on a 2d surface creates a spiral.
There's a chaos to the universe but somehow our experiencing and observation of reality create a perception of order. Existence is the antithesis of nothingness. A defiant structuring of chaos, the bastion of existence against the ever stalking butler we call entropy. The spiral is the path of our journey as we sound the clarion call to the uncaring universe that "I am here, I exist". "Of your primordial soup I create a feast". Our Consciousness powered by life is the duality to the raw physics and building blocks of the universe. The dichotomy in complexity and ordering of existence and perception to the simplicity and chaos of space time.

Lateralus Lyrics and The Fibonacci Sequence
Maynard structured and sung the lyrics using the first 7(1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13) numbers in the Fibonacci Sequence. Each number in the sequence denotes the amount of syllable(s) he sings before he adds a slight pause in his phrasing to (indicate/separate) the movement to the next number in sequence. The full pattern can be seen at the end.
(Please feel free to let me know if any mistakes or if I missed anything - I'll edit/update the post)
    Section 1
    [Verse 1]
    Black - 1
    Then - 1
    White are - 2
    All I see - 3
    In my infancy - 5
Red and yellow then came to be - 8
Reaching out to me - 5
    Lets me see - 3
[Pre-Chorus - He jumps straight to 13 breaking the pattern, making the first verse seem "incomplete"]
As below so above and beyond I imagine - 13
Drawn beyond the lines of reason - 8
    Push the envelope - 5
    Watch it bend - 3
Chorus and Post Chorus don't use the sequence
    Section 2
    [Verse 1 Repeated]
    Black - 1

    All I see - 3
    In my infancy - 5
Red and yellow then came to be - 8
Reaching out to me - 5
    Lets me see - 3
[Verse 2 - this "completes" the piece of the pattern that section 1 one was missing between V1 and the Pre-Chorus)
    There is - 2
    So - 1
    Much - 1
    More and - 2
    Beckons me - 3
To look through to these - 5
    Infinite possibilities - 8
    [Pre-Chorus]
As below so above and beyond I imagine - 13
Drawn beyond the lines of reason - 8
    Push the envelope - 5
    Watch it bend - 3

The pattern of the 2 sections looks like this:

    1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3 / 13, 8, 5, 3
    Section 2

It's not written based on the fibonacci sequence. The 16th integer of that sequence is 987. So they used 9/8, 8/8, 7/8 time signatures throughout the song. They called the song "987" while recording.
So it has a fibonacci connection, but it's not based on it.
To be fair, Maynard does play with syllables a bit, matching, forward and backward, the beginning of the sequence. I'm over analyzing. Lol

Don’t let the “Gematria” style number crunching fool you. It is far more likely those conclusions are coincidental rather than intentionally engineered into the song. Like people knowing 1.618 is the golden ratio (even though that is rounded, so not REALLY it) and then finding ways to interpret things in the song that appear to line up with that. If one were to manipulate their “math” enough they can find literally anything they want to think they should find. The only for sure intentional part was when Maynard wrote the lyrics, having the syllable count matching the earliest part of the Fibonacci sequence and the lyrical reference to the spiral, which is a visual way of representing the sequence.

Reading the lyrics is a great idea!
If you haven't experienced Tool before it is different. Other bands increase the volume of the vocals before releasing a song. Tool doesn't do that. They treat the singer as an equal part of the music so the vocals "seem" quieter, but it legitimately makes it harder to hear them.
The subject matter Tool covers in their songs can be layered and mixed with spirituality, enlightenment, humor, anger... at times simple or very complex. "The Pot" or "Right in Two" are good choices to hear the vocals better. Good luck!
