Shoei RF-SR vs RF-1200 Helmet Review, why I switched

- The Shoei RF-SR vs Shoei RF-1200 motorcycle helmet is a common debate. I wanted to weigh in with a UA-cam video sharing my opinion after owning both. I ride a Harley-Davidson upright position so I will not have great information for sport bike riders. My goal is to talk through the two helmets and let you know what I think. I hope I can help someone else who is on the same position I was two years ago when trying to buy my first full face motorcycle helmet.

Awesome video man! Looks like a great helmet to get I wonder how it would fair against my Bell SRT modular
Thanks Mick!! I’ve never ridden with a Bell SRT. Maybe I will do another helmet video in the future.
Agreed. I own a SRT mod which I'm extremely happy with, a little noisy but have been checking out the Shoei as have had one in the past & found them to be most excellent. Great video man.
Stay safe & enjoy.
Another great (and timely) vid, since I’m looking at these two as well. I know they pitch the RF-SR for “upright riding”, but your comments make me want to consider the 1200 too. Thanks again!
Yeah I felt like the comments about upright riding steered me toward the RF-SR originally but after riding with the RF-1200 I really don't think its that much (if at all) different. The overall RF-1200 is absolutely better if you have the money to spend IMHO.
@@GearsGadgets That's the exact question that brought me to your video. And the more I think about it, the more I don't really understand how the view would even change that much through any helmet. I mean, my eyes are always in the same spot... so provided the visor is across my eyes... what would make the view better in any design? Maybe I'm ignorant, but who knows.
I own both helmets and ride 2 different bikes, one upright and a sportbike in a tuck. The RF-1200 vents you may notice more airflow at speed when you tilt your head down a bit if you are riding upright. I have both helmets in white and really like the look of the RF-SR...stormtrooper look haha. Both helmets I like very much and both have their uses (for me!). Thanks for you video bud!
No problem, thanks for the comment. I prefer the RF-1200 even in the upright position but I will reserve judgment for when it gets up to 115 degrees here.
Yea!!! A review on a helmet other than a Ruroc 2.0! Good job. Helmets are one part of the gear I haven't found the best one for my mellon yet. I have four, all good but not great.
Haha yeah the Ruroc 2.0 is certainly the talk of the town right now. I also think they have way more social media push than the established Shoei’s of the world where their reputation somewhat markets itself. I wouldn’t mind comparing the Shoei’s to a Ruroc at some point.
Excellent video! I usually advise new and/or inexperienced riders to buy the best helmet they can afford. And then ask the question, “How much is your head worth?” Usually I get a strange look and then, later, I see them wearing a Shoei or Aria. Both are excellent, quiet helmets! Thanks for this informative video. Ride safe my friend.
Thanks I appreciate it. I would agree with your advice
Good advice brotha! I tell my kids the same thing, never cheap out on a helmet. A shoei has saved my life twice.
@@rapscallion3421 ....... you’re very fortunate to have been wearing a very good helmet! I really like Shoei & Aria helmets. Both seem to fit extremely well and are quiet with very good face shields available.
btw, thanks for the review, its precisely the comparison I am trying to do before buying one or the other!
Glad it was helpful!
Good reviews on the Shoie. I just ordered a RF1200 TC5
Thanks Rick!! You will love it (I think)
Everyone says the RF1200 (NXR) uses better materials than the RF-SR (RYD) - However, if you look at the SHARP tests (UK Government DfT) - the RF-SR scored 5 stars where as the RF1200 only got 4 stars - with more force passing through on the sides of the helmet. My opinion is that regardless of how premium the materials are, if they aren't in the right places or put together as well, then it's not worth it. Shuberth make expensive helmets using great materials and have loads of innovative features, but they only score about 3 stars in actual impact safety. I've been researching for a while and for an average oval head shape, I think the RYD is the safest, best looking and reasonably priced helmet out there.
I appreciate the input. I really wouldn't argue anyone who has put in research on which helmet they feel best suited to protect their dome. Shoei has a great reputation and its my personal choice that I happen to trust. Ride safe and again, thanks for the input!!
Hey, your video is the few comparisons of the two. RF1200 has tuck design and more aggressive aero dynamic design for sport bike. I just purchased SR yesterday and very pleased with detail and finish. SR is aimed at daily use and versatile for touring as well. It is the second lightest following RF1200 and the price is right. RF1200 and RF SR are called Z7 and RYD in Asian Market respectively.
Thanks!! I think you really cant go wrong with either one to be honest. Ive ridden now for a while with both and they are both great.
Can you wear your Rx eyewear comfortably the same with both helmets? It's 2022 , is the 1200 still available? I'm having trouble finding it. Thanks for the video, I found it helpful.
I just bought a Shoei RF-1400 yesterday. Fabulous helmet!
Very nice!
You will likely find that the venting in the RF isn't too great for most cruisers. Most of those sport lids don't flow air very well unless you're in a bit of a tuck. Might do okay on a HD though since we're always looking down to see our speedos. ;)
For me on my Heritage the RF-SR wasn’t bad at all, actually performed better than expected. The RF-1200 is definitely flowing a littler better. Only issue I have is the chin vent doesn’t get a ton of air because of the windscreen but it still flows okay. I’m guessing rider height and different cruisers make the experience differ quite a bit.
RF SR makes my head hurt and give me headaches. Any reason why?
Im assuming you got the same size for both rfsr and 1200. When you put them side by side, is one shell slightly bigger??
The 1200 looks a tad bit smaller in the vid. Am i right or are the shells identical??
Thanks!
I didn’t notice a difference in shell size, they both broke in about the same to me.
What Bluetooth intercom set would you recommend for the NXR - the one that fits without altering much the aerodynamics. I see sets made for GT air/Neotec.
I haven’t tested anything extensively other than Cardo PackTalk which I absolutely love.
Hey Gears and Gadgets. Thanks for the info I never knew about the Transitions visors. lol I don't always wear a helmet but I am looking to bye one. Now knowing this I am a little more app to get one thanks for the info. Have you ever heard of the Voss rear opening helmet?
I have never heard of the Voss, I will check it out. The transition visor is REALLY nice.
I think the drop down visors inside the helmet, create an opening inside the helmet of empty space which might *might* create some additional noise. The RF-1200 has better reviews on forums (just random forum comments) that say it is quieter than the GT Air series. I bought a new Strada II and its a really nice helmet, very high quality. But it is extremely loud. Not from whistling or any bad design problems. It doesn't whistle at all at any angle. But the Strada shell seems to transmit noise through the padding, like a giant plastic speaker. Like when you're in an airplane and you can hear the air rushing over the paper thin aluminum body, despite the airplane being air tight. It seems to be a hard composite shell that is brittle and creates noise, but this is just a theory. I now think that plastic helmets are better than lightweight fiber-matrix helmets. Lightweight helmets don't seem to be good, in terms of overall noise prevention. If you don't have a windshield, the RF-1200 with the ear pads option (you need to buy ear pads that fit in it) would be a good option. Or a SR. Or make your own ear pads for the Strada II. The problem with the Strada is that I don't like the gasket design.
2 XL ???? Got Damn 😂 Good call on keeping that melon safe !! Stay safe out there 🤘🏼
lol true.
Is the sizing pretty true to the sizing chart?? I’m in the process of buying a helmet right now and my head is 23 1/2 inches around Which is considered a large but I don’t know if I’m going to need a bigger one because I have a big head as well. And with all the stores closed right now I can’t really try anything on
hmm I wouldn’t want to misdirect you and I am certainly not a pro when it comes to helmet sizing. sorry I know that isn’t a huge help.
loved this review bro. I have big dome too and am currently deciding between these 2 lids.
Thanks Cheech. Big dome crew 4L
Do me a favor, ride without helmet bruh
@@mistergixxerk3 I will do my 4 year old daughter a favor and ride with one. I’ve seen two people dead on the side of the road from low speed crashes that likely could be alive and probably walked away had they wore a helmet. So while it looks cool to ride without one, it looks way less cool when you’re dead. That’s just my opinion. Do what you want, I personally wouldn’t spend any time asking anyone to change what they are doing to make me feel better about my decisions.
Protect that dome sir. Although it may be hollow, I wish you safe riding
@@GearsGadgetswhat size do you wear?
I have the RF-1200 with the Transitions face shield. Love it. Snug fit and quiet.
I totally agree, it is an amazing helmet and the transitions lens is awesome.
My man slapped those stickers down so perfectly 👌
Lol
Looking for a riding jacket just like yours, orange&black! What brand is it, you recommend your model with its protection?
Mine is a discontinued Harley jacket which sucks because I would buy another one if they had it still.
Which one has less wind noise? That seems to be the number #1 problem with all new helmets. They all actually suck when riding on a partially faired motorcycle with a half windshield.
I dont notice a huge difference between the two.
I have both as well! For reference the RF SR seems to be the exact same model as my older RF1000
That’s interesting. Do you prefer the RF-1200?
I own since summer 2017 the predecessor of the RF-SR, the Qwest in black, and 2 months ago i bought an RF 1200 ("NXR" here in Europe) also in white. Both are great helmets.
Shoei just makes awesome helmets.
is the paint metallic or just gloss white?
Haven’t looked at the technical sheet but I have both. RF 1200 is definitely lighter to me and the interior lining material feels slightly nicer. My recommendation is go for the RF 1200, I never use the RF SR anymore.
I completely agree. I haven’t put the RF-SR back on since buying the RF1200.
Shoei and Arai the best in the business, bar none. The RF-SR is slightly heavier than the RF1200. The RF 1200 is a step up in materials no question. One should expect about a 10% relax in materials due to a break in period. Helmet Fitment is most critical and most people purchase a size too large thinking it’s perfect. Use Shoei’s sizing for guidance and compare against actual fitment is best. The cheeks should feel and visually appear to be snug. A new helmet with good on/off technique should be a bit of squeeze to get in and off. There is a proper technique to correctly putting on a helmet on. Watch any Professional MotoGP racer and there is a commonality to the technique. IMHO, a top of the food chain helmet is the most important gear next to good boots, jacket and gloves. With a high percentage of uninsured motorists out there it’s telling that many people feel the extra cost of insurance is worth the gamble. Like the helmet-less riders. Go figure. That’s my spiel and I’m sticking with it. Ride safe and ride often.
I love the spiel. I have never tried an Arai but I think Shoei is amazing. I know the RF-1200 is definitely a little tighter than the RF-SR out of the box but its not too bad. I have a huge head so if it were uncomfortable I would feel it right away.
This is so true, about proper fitment, that shoei puts it in writing in their fitment manual. As they put it, if the helmet doesn't feel tight then it's too large. They also write the correct size helmet will often feel, to someone inexperienced in proper helmet fitment, too tight to pull onto ones head. I know from my own experience how easy it is to get the wrong size thinking it's perfect. Shoei charts show my head size falls between small and medium but trying on a brand new large feels perfect - it's comfortable, no pressure or pain points, goes on and off without difficulty, and isn't loose enough to roll up/down/side-to-side much on my head. If not for the feeling tight and breaking in aspect, I would almost think the large is my proper size even though the sizing charts place me no where near it. It only gets worse when "I have to pay for this thing" gets factored in and the helmet is an expensive purchase. Do I buy the helmet that feels most comfortable or do I follow the advice of others and buy the one that I think is tight and not very comfortable? I have to pay for it and live with it. All this explains for me why stats indicate majority (> 50%) of riders wear a helmet that is too big.
Hi, great review. One question: on the shell sizes? They are so much different? I have the problem a lot of helmets seems to big for my body, but i heard shoei with 4 shell sizes helmets are so much fit... Thanks
I am sorry I don’t understand the question.
@@GearsGadgets Sorry ahah. I wanted to know how big Is the rf1200 Shell size. If It Is smaller than rf-sr and than other helmets in general. Thanks
@@alfa405 the RF-SR has 3 shell sizes, if I remember correctly...I also believe the RF1200 has 4 shell sizes. Therefore, depending on your head size the RF1200 could be smaller overall, when viewed from the outside. For example, I usually wear a medium...most companies have SM-MD as a size, but the RF-SR is MD-LG, making it a little larger on my head, but I honestly didn't notice it being unnecessarily large when I tried it on.
Checking in now that it’s hot in AZ. any actual difference in internal temperature between the two?
it’s marginally different and oddly enough I feel the RF-SR had slightly better ventilation on my Heritage with the windscreen but it will certainly be different on different bikes.
Thanks! Have a happy 4th of July!!
love my rf1200...im usually very picky with head gear , but it fits me perfect and is suuuper comfy
Yeah I LOVE my RF1200
Excellent review on both helmets and I would go with the white as it doesn't draw the heat as much as a black one, that being said I wear a black one LoL 😂, have a great day Dan, this Dan has got to get busy, ride safe brother 💯✌️😎
Thanks OZARKS. Yeah I’m curious to see how much if any difference white makes in the heat.
@@GearsGadgets it makes a huge difference, I use to wear white because they were a lot cooler than the black one, but I'm back to black LoL 👍, summer time I always wear a half helmet, but wear the full face during the early spring and in the fall because it does keep me warm 💯✌️😎
in cold weather which one is better ?
and which one is quieter ?
I haven't had the RF-1200 in the cold weather yet so I couldn't tell you. Noise level for me has been pretty much identical.
Great video. I bought the RFSR rather than the rf1200. I was told that the RFSR was made for a upright rider where the rf1200 is for the sports rider. Both great helmets and either choice is great. Have you ever had a chance to wear a Sena/Bluetooth helmet. Looking for a second helmet and those caught my attention.
James Peterson
Nada. Read Shoei’s description. RF1200 is a cruiser helmet. The Shoei X14 is race orientated.
That’s cool. Still happy the RFSR. Thanks for the input. I guess I was told wrong
I have never had the chance to wear the Sena helmet but honestly I wouldn't spend that much money on a DOT helmet that isnt Snell. I heard the same mentions of the RF-SR being more for the upright riding position but I really don't see it as a huge difference at all.
Gears & Gadgets thanks for the reply. Keep up the good videos man
I’ve heard that about the RF SR being tuned more for upright riding, too. A Revzilla video said they prefer the SR for upright riding. But it was unclear if they meant they prefer it over the 1200 for upright or if they preferred the SR for upright more than for racing. I know Shoei does not recommend the SR for racing. Whatever. I have the SR and only ride upright within the legal speeds. Seems perfect to me. Can’t imagine how there could be $85 worth of improvements made to it. But maybe if I rode >85mph for long periods of time, I’d appreciate any difference more.
Any difference in the noise levels?
Not noticeably really.
Nice vid! Do the cheek pads from the rf1400 fit into the rf1200?
I do not believe they do
I do not believe they do
If I can get my hands on a rf1200 matte black with a gold visor for $300 would that be worth it? Could I make some money off it?
It’s in really good condition. Nothing more than a couple marks on the back bottom portion of it. You can barely see them though. Is it worth the purchase?
Hmm. I would never recommend buying a used helmet. Never know if it’s been dropped or stored in a 120 degree trunk. My head isn’t worth a $200 bargain.
Gears & Gadgets okay, good thing I didn’t get it then! Thanks! 👌🏼
compared to wearing glasses which one is more roomier and more comfortable?
Identical
I got a thinner cheek pad for mine. Fits better now.
I didnt have to do that, they were snug but broke in quite nice
What jacket is that?
Its called the switchback, they don’t sell it anymore.
Good video.. I have an RF 1200 too, you may consider picking up thinner cheek pads if you still find the helmet too tight. I believe they come standard with a 35mm cheek pad.
Thanks. The pads in my RF1200 aren't really too tight, they are actually breaking in real nice.
I have both was looking to find a replacement for my Quest
You have both Shoei helmets? Which one do you like the best?
I bought both to replace an eight year old Qwest that I loved. I use the RF-SR that I think is closer to the Qwest for longer rides I ride an FJR1300 with handle bar rise great vents with more Qwest like fit. I have added Cardo Pack Bold and a dark tint screen. Vader
I use RF1200 for more brisk runs with transition face mask and Cardo Pack bold JBL
Bottom line I have always had 2 and some times 3 helmets.
I still like Schuberth S2 best.
ordered solid white 1200 based on this. Add another HD rider in a full face helmet.
Happy to see another HD rider in a full face. I am sure you will love that 1200
@@GearsGadgets I did pimp it out with blue visor 😉
I have a Shoei RF-SR. I've been riding with it for three or 4 month. I know that is is a great helmet. But, the problem I'm having is rear neck sourness. After a couple of long rides, the back of my neck is really soar and tight. Thought it may be due to coming of winter when I don't do a lot of riding. But, yesterday while riding. I noticed that the front helmet seamed to want to slide down. Sort of like the helmet is front heavy. Putting stress on the back of my neck. Don't know if this make any sense to anyone, but my neck sure feels it. Anyone else has this problem? The helmet is snug on my head. Don't think i could fit in anything smaller.
Hey,it's me again on the Shoei. The front of my helmet wasn't sliding down as much as it just seamed to be heavy toward the front.
Really? I don't really know what to tell you with that because I didn't experience that at all. Everyone's heads are different so its really hard to "give advice" on a helmet aside from general stuff. Sorry to hear about that.
Well I figured out the problem. The helmet was too big. Went back to where I bought it. And they ordered one. Rode almost 500 miles with the new helmet. Didn’t have any problem what so ever. Nothing better than a proper fitting helmet.
@@dalemeche7276what size did you have and change to?
i have the rf-sr and that thing makes my head look massive. great helmet in general tho
Please please tell me how you are using the Cardo mic to record?
Great timing finding this video. I own a Neotec2 and looking for a second helmet for vlogging. The price difference for me is 180 between the RS and 1200 graphic.
As far as color and heat, not enough to be a deal breaker. I choice white over black for safety but I own more black with hi-viz then white.
No problem David. Thanks for watching.
Question about the weight I keep hearing about and people saying that it JS a whistle sound when the visor is open and chin vents...??
I don’t have any whistle sounds from either.
For the photochromatic shields, you can chemically reset them by putting them in the freezer overnight. I'm going on 5 years with the same one.
Ok this is funny, I cam across this video no knowing anything about helmets and went with what we were told in the store. We are new riders and new to bike riding(can-am) we purchased both these models. I think a bit pricy but they say its a good helmet so thats what we went with .
A bit pricey but certainly is “Premium”. I am a big fan of the Snell rating as well.
9:00 wind noise 👍 was waiting
You’re welcome
RF 1200 is designed for sport bikes to maximize on vent RF-SR more for upright riding
Generally true, Honestly I feel there isn't much difference riding with one vs the other in terms of field of vision or riding position making any real difference. If there is any, its pretty minor. Big difference is build quality in the RF-1200 (now 1400) is definitely better.
I scuffed mine in motorcycle training and I cry everyday
Oh no that sucks!!!
The RF-1200 is old as the hills. RF-SR is the newer design.
TG the RF-SR is a more budget friendly version of the RF-1200 which is a slightly more premium helmet. While the RF-SR is newer that does not mean it is better.
@@GearsGadgets the rf-sr scored a 5 star sharp rating, rd1200 got 4.So the rf-sr in certainly better in terms of safety.
Love my rsfr....like more than my girl love
It is a really good helmet.
Why are you shilling the RF1200. I own this and it's definitely a noisy helmet. So,,, all that, not much [worse] than the SR type of comments.,,, always equal or better than type of comments are truly annoying. You are compensated by that store,,, and I distinctly recognize your attempt to cover up for the deficiencies. Stop that.
Well Justin. It is quite possible that I personally LOVE the RF1200 over the RF-SR and that I personally don’t think it is a loud helmet. It is also quite possible that you and I have different heads, different ears, different motorcycles, and different opinions. I have also since switched to the RF-1400 and love it even more. I also love the conspiracy of the coverup even though I clearly disclosed in the video it was sponsored. Sorry man but your gripe and accusation of some coverup is illegitimate. I’m just one dude with one opinion, feel free to fire up your own camera and produce a video about why I am wrong. Nothing stopping you.
Photochromic*
Sorry.
@@GearsGadgets haha no worries. I've been researching so hard I've memorized the name. I just wear sunglasses so often with visor open.
Over 50? Over 80?
I dont notice a huge difference 50 to 80 but I am also behind a windscreen so keep that in mind.
What jacket is that?
It is a Harley-Davidson discontinued jacket. Too bad because I LOVE it.
@@GearsGadgets yeah nice look
