CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Everett (George Clooney) and Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) share a picnic with a charismatic bible salesman (John Goodman) with a hidden agenda.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The writing, directing, and producing team of Joel Coen and Ethan Coen created this picaresque comedy (inspired in part by Homer's The Odyssey) set in the Deep South during the Depression. Suave and fancy-talking Everett Ulysses McGill (George Clooney), dim-witted Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson), and easily-excitable Pete (John Turturro) are serving time together on a prison chain gang. Everett knows where $1.2 million is hidden that's theirs for the taking, and the three manage to escape; however, a stranger soon warns them that they'll find treasure, but not the sort they're looking for. As Everett and his partners hit the road, they happen upon a gluttonous bible salesman, Big Dan Teague (John Goodman); meet up with Baby Face Nelson (Michael Badalucco) as he robs a bank; encounter three Sirens doing their washing; run into Everett's estranged wife Penny (Holly Hunter), who has told everyone her husband was killed in a train wreck; find themselves in the middle of a heated campaign between political boss Pappy O'Daniel (Charles Durning), and reformist candidate Homer Stokes (Wayne Duvall); and even find time to make a hit record as The Soggy Bottom Boys. Noted songwriter T-Bone Burnett helped compile the songs (combining vintage country blues tunes with originals in the same style), while Carter Burwell composed the background score. Incidentally, the title O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a reference to the classic Preston Sturges comedy Sullivan's Travels, in which a director plans to make a serious "message picture" with that name.

I love how George just sat there eating his corn. This movie great.
well I’ll be damned I don’t get it big dan
"I don't get it big dan" hahahhahahhaha
It parallels the Odyssey, where Odysseus basically keeps calm and doesn’t resist the giant cyclops while his men panic and are eaten. Later, he drives a staff through the cyclops eye, also paralleled in the Klan scene later in the movie.
yes movie great
Lol “what’s the problem Big Dan??”
The line "I don't get it, Big Dan" is pure Coen Brothers and one of the funniest things in the film.
I still don't understand why he just sat there? XD
@@fwobebe5164 Its suppose to be reference to where odysseus kept his calm and did not resist the cyclops unlike his men
@@fwobebe5164because him and big Dan are quite similar in personality, charismatic wise talking kinda guys, he’s blinded by that he falls for big Dan’s charisma because he’s deeply egotistical and can see himself in Dan so when Dan says he’s giving them and advanced tutorial Everett believes him and he doesn’t understand it. In many ways he’s more stupid than Delmar is. That’s how I interpret it anyway
@@lewischerry3552
That's a great way to put it ^^
Couldn't have picked a batter man to play the Cyclops.
Another masterpiece by the Coen brothers.
Goodman played Babe Ruth before.
Scott Summers i see what u did there
"You don't say much, friend, but when you do its to the point and I salute you for it". I love that line.
me too
I use it all the time.
"Thank you as well for the conversational hiatus. I generally refrain from speech during gustation."
This movie is filled with great lines!!!
+Erik Vinson I agree. I've watched this clip multiple times and laughed every time. Brilliant writing!
I'm gonna use that line next time I'm on a date.
Well ill be damed 😂
Reason I love it.
No doubt brotha 😂
LMAO, I love how when the "cyclops" first clubs one of the men how nonchalant George Clooney is about it.
"What's goin' on, Big Dan?"
"mmm this is some good food."
*Friends gets skull caved in*
He posed as a bible salesman and was killed by a flaming cross
Ironic
He learned a lesson.
@@kenereno1043 He could save others from death, but not himself.
I guess he was supposed to be Polyphemus, who in the odyssey was blinded by a flaming stake I think
Yessir, an olive log
John Goodman is SUCH an underrated actor. It's surprising that he doesn't have an Oscar by now.
I think he's the greatest character actor of all time.
@@slimandnone__6545 here here.🙂
Agreed. His role on The Big Lebowski will forever be one of my favorite roles of his.
Just because he's never won an Oscar doesn't make him underrated. Literally everybody knows who he is and he's widely praised. He's the furthest from underrated.
Oscars are a bought and paid for thing, studios buy nominations with ‘for your consideration’ it has little to nothing to do with talent. They’re about as useful and necessary as having tastebuds in your bowel
It is always nice to have a mentor that takes you under his wings and teaches you the ropes. Hats off to Big Dan for the charity he bestows upon his humble brethren.
"I don't get it big Dan"
Drew Nixon RAAAAAAAAGH!!!!
Drew Nixon BRAAAUUGGGHHHH
*T H W A C K*
I still don't get it🤔
Malcolm Squealllll
I love how genuinely 30's this entire movie is.
I don't think the Great Depression was like a Coen Brothers film.
It’s so heartbreaking when Delmar thinks John Goodmans character killed Pete
That part was the funniest part.when John Goodman threw him at the tree tho
RIP Pete the Toad
Paulo San Jose technically that was a leopard frog
No, you don't understand. That's Pete.
TheNeanderthal051
"you know these things give you warts?"
SQUISH!
End of lesson
Pete the horny toad
I had a fire drill at my school recently, and I saw a tree branch on the ground. This scene immediately popped into my head.
In delmar's defense he at least tried to fight back Everett just stood there
@Bandersnatch41, agree and I have a theory that's the reason Coen brothers casted him in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs 🤣
@jeff nomad I don't get it Big Dan?
@jeff nomad I know. And I was quoting one of the lines of dialogue that Everett said
@@Bandersnatch41 WHACK
“I’m an astute observer of the human scene.”
My teacher said she was going to give us an advanced tutorial. I immediately thought of this scene.
Watch out for that tree branch.
I assume after her lecture you said, "I don't get it, Mrs. Dan."
John Goodman is hilarious.
jakethemuss3 heck yeah he is.
He also seems like the type of guy you'd want on your team. 👊
He's a national treasure. Like Eddie Vedder, he deserves a secret service detachment to ensure he lives as long as he possibly can.
The sound of the dead toad hitting the tree is hilarious.
and very real
It's Pete 😂😂
Flap!
Don’t you know these things give you warts?
DragonRanger1990 *crushes it
I've collected all of George Clooney's lines for y'all:
" 's our pleasure, Big Dan."
""Well I, like to think I'm a pretty astute observer of the human scene too, Big Dan."
" ... what's goin' on, Big Dan?"
"I don't get it, Big Dan."
It's like saying "I don't get offended easily" then proceeding to take offense twice in a row.
"I DON'T GET IT BIG DAN."
"Its an excrsize in physiology so does speak."
Mathew, big thanks for your SCHOLARSHIP; BSS YOUR HEART ---DAVE EASTON
Damn, were in a tight spot
I don't get it Big Dan
*BRAAAUUUUUUGGH*
ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Delmar is such a wonderful character, he's so simple and sweet and he's just like this big kid sometimes, but then he has the common sense (and the courage!) to actually get up and start fighting back when Big Dan attacks, but then he gets the most heartbroken look when "Pete" gets squashed, he's so completely genuine and I adore him.
And Everett... does not have nearly as many brain cells as he likes to believe.
he didn't stand a chance in hell against that big bear
The way he threw the frog after he smashed it lmao
I wish we could all go back to talking the way they do in this amazing film.
There's something about Delmar's high pitched yell as he lunges onto Teague's back that makes me laugh.
It’s amazing how this movie makes me feel nostalgic for a time period that I wasn’t even alive for. Yeah, a lot of bad things happened back then too, but the Coen Brothers did a great job at making the audience feel like they’re actually there with the characters.
I laugh every time when Delmar does that weak growl then tackles Big Dan who also yells at 1:40 XD
I love how delmars the only one trying to stop dan
1:35 that's so funny, I can't breathe
Victor M same here
I don't get it big dan
Aaaaarrrgggghhhhh
" I invited you all ,out here for this advance tutorial " LOL. This scene is pretty funny.
1:27 The way Delmar screams like that makes me laugh every time.
What evil forces have conspired to keep a Best Supporting Actor Oscar away from John Goodman, and how can we most effectively smite them?
Well i think his role was just a bit small here.
Well, yes, but I didn't mean for this movie. Just in general.
Oh right yeah, i think he's certainly at least getting nominated for 10 Cloverfield Lane, hopefully.
it's a shame, but he's also been in some REALLY bad movies, even if he isn't bad in them. he has been robbed a few times, though.
He didn't see his friends die face-down in the mud just to be denied an Oscar multiple times.
"ain't nuthN butta damn toad"....Lol
When the toad hit the tree, I peed myself....LOL.
I love the sound the frog makes when the guy throughs it at the tree
it's not funny. it is repulsive
"I's all about the money, boys." -Big Dan
I haven't laughed this hard at a movie scene as long as I can remember, me and my mom were dying,u know that laugh where you are gasping for air like if I had asthma and needed my inhaler ? lol that was me
The Cyclops thing is one thing, but it gets even more clever. The crew mistake him for a hospitable host, only for him to brutally kill one of them, though they didn't know it wasn't Pete until later. It is a reference to the cyclops eating his "guests."
Not to mention, having John Goodman cameo in these scenes? Hardcore.
The sound the frog makes when he hits the tree ..... 🤣
A tiny tap. And that’s funny how?
“What? It ain’t nothin but damn toad”
I love how John Goodman and George Clooney were both in Roseanne, playing friends, to playing enemys in this movie.
1:29 For those wondering what he's saying here, it's "Dough Re Mi" (in other words: Money)
"I generally refrain conversation during gustation; there are those who attempt both, I find it coarse and vulgar."
Everette: What’s goin on Big Dan😂
Maybe my favorite scene from the movie. It shocked me when I was young and now appreciate how abrupt the turn goes. That's the greatest part of it.
what shocked you?
"I like to think I'm a pretty astute observer of the human scene"
Completely misses Big Dan snapping a branch and beating seven bells out of Delmar
Whatever comes after brilliance, that's this scene...a Coen Bros. master class in screenwriting, comedy and spectacular comic timing by all 3 actors. It don't get no better, no how.
I love the scenery in this particular scene,it's what i would paint a picture of heaven as looking like.
“We thought you was a toad”
Do. Not. Seek. The. Treasure.
A detail I never realised was that “Cyclops” is actually the name of a position within the Klan, as is Wizard and Dragon
This movie is my life
I don't get it Big Dan. AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGG!!!!! lmao
The sound "Pete" makes when he hits the tree. Im dying
are you dying why is it funny?
R.I.P. Pete the toad.
2:12 "You know these things give you warts?" ... [SQUISH] ... Throws dead toad on tree. "End of lesson."
::WHACK:: ::chomp chomp:: 's goin on big dan?
One of the best delivered line in the movie.
*smack* ".....Whats goin' on, Big Dan?"
lol
*you don't say much friend but when you do it's to the point and i salute you for it*
Ever notice when Big Dan spins Delmar, it is the exact same spin that John Goodman uses on Nicholas Cage in Raising Arizona? Nice touch, Coens!
Poor Pete 😭
I always laugh when he squash’s the toad, as if that wasn’t enough he then throws it at the tree😂
i generally refrain from speech during gustation .....LMFAO!!!!!
One of the best movies ever (fact)
Goodman is such a force in every movie he's in and I was a big fan of the Roseane show, back in the 90's
This was me and my dad's favorite movie, we would watch it at least once a week lol.. Good times haha..
youre darn tootin
This movie was another Coen masterpiece.
Big Dan: Wha- There isnt nothing but a damned toad...
Delmar: You dont understand... thats Pete...
Lil man had some fight in him
Alvin Nichols, remember he is Buster Scruggs lol
2:16 - 2:17 makes really me so sad. 😞😔
Beau Reynolds but it ain’t Pete.
@@fitness2947 it's an innocent toad
Lucalina Dreemur you don’t understand... that’s Pete
John is so good in this scene.
I miss when he was fat and jolly like Santa Claus.
1:34/1:35 I don't get it, Big Dan 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
2:14 the sick joy when it becomes apparent what he could do.
You dont say much. But when you do" it's to the point" and I salute you " for it.
Yes.
Of course.
Of course.
John Goodman is the man! I love this guy when I saw him in Roseanne.Great guy.Wish I could meet him.
"ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY BOIS!" God thats such a good line.
Fricassee also is mentioned in Fargo.
No toads were harmed in the making of this motion picture.
“And we got beat up by a Bible salesman.”
He's so quaint and elegant with his speech. So when he gets his hands on that club it goes pretty much out the window.
".....i don't get it, big dan"
"AAAAGGHH" *WHACK*
Easily one of my favorite Coen films
Whether you love or hate this movie, you just can't deny that John Goodman was born to play the role of Big Dan Teague!
Even though it's evident that the toad was not Pete, Big Dan was was still a dick for destroying someone else's possessions.
And robbing them of their money.
15 seconds on amazing Picnic asmr.
What's going on Big Dan lmao..no help at all George
I like how the one guy was covered in butterflies! It reminds me of renasonts art.
He should have got best supporting actor for Big Dan Teague!
I feel like McGill saying "I don't get it, Big Dan." and then getting smacked upside the head was the funniest joke in the movie. Like, it's simple slapstick, but damn funny slapstick all the same.
Yes, quite literally slap stick XD
I love this movie..hope to see it on netflix soon.good acting..music and scrip..
Lmfao best movie ever
I grew up in thida arkansas... looks just like this movie feels like home when i watch it
The way John Goodman screams 1:43
A masterpiece
The Perfect Modern Day Odyssey! All these men were Perfect for this movie.
“Thank you boys for throwin in that fricassee, I’m a man of large appetite even with lunch under my belt I was feelin a might peckish” 😂
I died laughing when the guy crushes the frog
1:35 Fantastic Mr. Fox vs Sulley 😂
Awesome 👌
What the....? There ain’t nothing but a damn toad!
"What's goin' on, Big Dan?"
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY BOYS!
Well, I'll be damned
Thank you as well for the conversational hiatus
You Don't Understand.........That's P-Pete. Lmaaoooooo
