CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Everett (George Clooney) and the boys pick up Tommy Johnson (Chris Thomas King), a guitarist who sold his soul to the devil.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The writing, directing, and producing team of Joel Coen and Ethan Coen created this picaresque comedy (inspired in part by Homer's The Odyssey) set in the Deep South during the Depression. Suave and fancy-talking Everett Ulysses McGill (George Clooney), dim-witted Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson), and easily-excitable Pete (John Turturro) are serving time together on a prison chain gang. Everett knows where $1.2 million is hidden that's theirs for the taking, and the three manage to escape; however, a stranger soon warns them that they'll find treasure, but not the sort they're looking for. As Everett and his partners hit the road, they happen upon a gluttonous bible salesman, Big Dan Teague (John Goodman); meet up with Baby Face Nelson (Michael Badalucco) as he robs a bank; encounter three Sirens doing their washing; run into Everett's estranged wife Penny (Holly Hunter), who has told everyone her husband was killed in a train wreck; find themselves in the middle of a heated campaign between political boss Pappy O'Daniel (Charles Durning), and reformist candidate Homer Stokes (Wayne Duvall); and even find time to make a hit record as The Soggy Bottom Boys. Noted songwriter T-Bone Burnett helped compile the songs (combining vintage country blues tunes with originals in the same style), while Carter Burwell composed the background score. Incidentally, the title O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a reference to the classic Preston Sturges comedy Sullivan's Travels, in which a director plans to make a serious "message picture" with that name.

One of the best
I love how even in the time of segregation, these men call Tommy 'son' and treat him kindly, making sure he knows the depth of his actions and taking him where he needs to go.
I like how they're having the most ordinary discussion about the weirdest topic.
Dude, yes!
Well, if they can hang out with crazy people like "Baby Face" Nelson as if it was nothing, they can probably discuss the devil and the selling of souls with others.
It’s not weird this was based off a real artist named “Robert Johnson” loook him up
Robert Johnson
What’s great is how tommy describes the devil, as white, with empty eyes, a hollow voice, and travels with a mean dog. That description fits Sheriff Cooley almost to a T! (Hollow voice is a bit of a stretch, but the sheriff says everything without emotion) they’re being chased by the devil throughout the whole movie
Almost nobody talks about that
"but the law is an institution of man"
@@brandonbeavers4668 the devil can appear any way he wants, and even hell is just a jail for sinners.
and also, I think the similarity is meant to be more irony and symbolism more than anything, like how the whole movie is a deep South version of the Odessy, complete with a Cyclops, sirens, and when they go to Tartarus (klan meeting scene).
Ya the at who it is
I like how Tommy casually mentions that he just sold his soul to the devil, and the other characters react with mild concern. As if this is a normal topic that comes up in small talk.
They took Robert Johnson story
@@user-de8hs6ep2kIt's not only Robert Johnson, but yeah, it's inspired by Johnson! Selling your Soul at a crossroads is a popular tale
I wouldn't say that... this whole scene is them talking about it.. even mentioning it was a bad idea.
Ya
That’s true to life. No one realizes the true gravity of that situation
the first time I watched this movie I noticed I was the only one in the first afternoon run at the theater....and I did not get the meaning of the movie...it wasn't til couple years later that I got it...what a masterpiece, in every sense, and the music just invades my soul
the ' oh nooooo sir ' gets me every bloody time :)
One of the greatest movies ever. You have to watch it several times to see the lessons of life and layers that peel back like a onion to reveal spiritual truth.
They made the character based off of a real person who actually went to the Crossroads.
Robert Johnson
Tommy Johnson was allegedly the first actually...Robert Johnson made the deal almost ten years later...but you can hear in his lyrics and strings that he actually could’ve done it
"you traded your soul for that?!" "well i wasnt using it" haha
Tommy and Robert Johnson were two different unrelated black blues musicians, both of whom supoosedly sold thier souls to the devil at a crossroads. Google both names.
whats tommys last name
@@elpesolondon7469 Johnson dude
They sold their soul to Legba, not the devil.
makes you wonder what he'd do for a klondike bar
This movie is based off of the Odyssey. Read it. It's makes so much more sense than you will ever know.........
Tishomingo? My mother was born and raised in Tishomingo, MS. LOL!
There is an old Song named "Tishomingo Blues" I used to play with the "Monkey come down Jazz Band" in Zurich, Switzerland. :-)
@@erichnussbaum Thanks for sharing that!
I love the song that they sang with tommy, had it stuck in my head forever!
Favorite movie of all time.
Mine too, funny most people I mention it to haven’t even heard of it.
For those that don't know, this is a throwback to THE Tommy Johnson, the Delta Blues legend. He often told people he sold his soul to the devil for his incredible mastery of the guitar.
Just asking. Did anyone else realize the devil was actually the guy who was hunting them down?
I hadnt till he mentioned the dags.
Yup! Since laws are a human construct and all. I love that someone else came to the same conclusion.
I can’t recall if they ever say outright the sheriff was the devil, but if they didn’t the implications are too strong to ignore.
@@firstname_lastname2 The movie doesn't say he is the devil explicity but i agree with you, the implications are too strong lol
No, hadn't connected the dots!!
What a sublime twist!
Love it!!..
Legend has it that a well known guitar player named Robert Johnson sold his sound to the devil as described in the movie.
The writers evidently based this scene on the legend of Robert Johnson.
@ianrobertdavies8605 I think it’s kinda true, this so called meeting at the crossroad
Actually there was also a real Tommy Johnson who was associated with that devil story before Robert Johnson.
Really been into the Cohen Bros. movies lately ..Brilliant !
A Wonderful Beautifully Funny and Poignant tale, with the most Fantastic soundtrack
It's like a fine fine wine that gives you more flavour with each viewing!!..
In my opinion!!..
And the days, keep worryin me. The hellhounds, on my trail. Hellhounds on my trail.
This movie made me a fan of the blues
Oh wow, I thought this was supposed to be Robert Johnson. Just found out it's Tommy Johnson, another bluesman. Doh!
BEST COMEBACK EVER!
Ngl, O brother, Where Art Thou is fire
When tommy gave the description, it describes the bounty hunter who is tracking delmar,Everett and pete.
Tommy is Robert Johnson from Statesboro, GA who is credited as the man who started the blues. This movie is so dope
Let be honest. If you’re a big music person, the moment you saw those crossroads and that guitar, you already knew exactly who it was.
Tommy Johnson. Original name was Robert Johnson. He started the 27 club. He died from poisoning. I love this movie
"He ain't had nothing to eat for 13 years except prison food, gopher and some greasy horse."
pappy o'daniel had a different name too ;D
i remember in high school, the teacher showed us this movie in history class to see if we could recognize any of the guys in the movie. Even the teacher didn't quite knwo who Johnson was, but i was a huuuge music fan, so i knew right away that was the guy who allegedly sold his soul to the Devil. i told him who it was and he was like "oh right! finally i figured it out"
and that's what my first ever marching band show was. Literally how Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil. because you know, high school
After I saw this movie, I wanted to research if a musician like that actually existed and that’s when I read about Robert Johnson.
When Tommy said "The Devil" he meant Sheriff Cooley.
I can’t imagine Sheriff Cooley teaching anyone to play guitar
He meant Big Dan
sang into yonder can and skedaddled
You folks going past Tishomingo?
What did he mean by "sing into his can"? Did he mean a literal can like soda or soup would come in or is there some meaning of can I don't know?
A microphone, back then microphones looked like a can
Too short...sale-o-ramma whahoo
He met Papa Elegba at the crossroads, and he gave him the gift of everlasting dexterity with his musical hands…no souls are required that’s just spooky dooky talk meant to scare people lol…
And of course they picked him up at a crossroads.
Mr.sir
Why do you gotta sell you're soul to have soul?
Wonder why they named other historical people accurately in this movie like George Nelson, but they call this guy Tommy Johnson instead of Robert Johnson.
Tommy was first.Robert was famous.
Chris could play W.E.B Dubois in a movie or Nelson Mandela during his prison term.
Illuminati
Robert Johnson
Robert johnson
“Well the great Satan himself is [gives classic description]”
“Oh, no sir! He’s WHITE!” 😂😂😂
keep ure finger away from peets mouth he aint had nothn but prison food and golfer
Robert Johnson
