  • The classic banjo pickin' scene from the movie Deliverance.
Deliverance is a 1972 drama film produced and directed by John Boorman. Principal cast members include Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, and Ned Beatty in his film debut. The film is based on a 1970 novel of the same name by American author James Dickey. The screenplay was written by Dickey and an uncredited Boorman.
In 2008, Deliverance was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Billy Redden plays "Dueling Banjos" opposite Ronny Cox, who joins him on guitar. Redden plays "Lonnie", a mentally retarded, inbred, but extremely gifted banjo player. The song went to #2 for four weeks on the U.S. pop chart in 1973 and topped the adult contemporary chart for two weeks the same year. It also led to a successful lawsuit by the song's composer, since it was used in the film without his permission.
"Duelling Banjos" was arranged and performed for the movie by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell and was included on the soundtrack album. The song had been composed in 1955 by Arthur Smith as a banjo instrumental he called "Feudin' Banjos". Smith recorded it, playing a four-string plectrum banjo and accompanied by five-string bluegrass banjo player Don Reno. When he was not acknowledged as the composer by the filmmakers, Smith sued. He eventually won, receiving songwriting credit as well as royalties. Two young musicians, Ron Brentano and Mike Russo, had originally been signed to play their adaptation for the movie, but instead it was performed by the others.

Beneath the beautiful banjo playing and connection between two people through music, a dark sense of foreboding is evident. Bits of the dialogue, certain characters’ faces, the woman in the window reveal this; it’s such a great scene that I love so much.

@Mark rapacki I agree. The movie is about how the more ‘advanced’ modern people don’t understand or respect the connection that the rural folk have to their home. The banjo kid is tricking the guitar guy into thinking he is simple , then the kid blows the guitarist away. The men are going down the river because it is soon going to be ‘tamed’ in the name of progress. It is an environmental activist picture , albeit over the top in a 70’s way( the rape analogy) ,

This is the perfect beginning to this movie. It shows how our main characters are so confident in their manhood and superiority over the locals. What a scene. Virtually no dialogue or action yet this scene tells you everything you need to know just with acting. The ending of the scene says it all as the man thought he had become a sort of “friend/ally” with the young boy, but that wasn’t the case as the boy refuses to even shake hands. That there was a sign that nobody back in those woods should be trusted, even if they look and act friendly.

Reminds me of growing up walking down these back roads or a holler as we call them and hearing people sitting on the front porch playing music just enjoying life one day at a time. Despite what takes place in this film, I can assure we're nothing like that. The Irish and Scottish settled in these mountains where I'm from. Describes Hollywood’s rendition of the “region” well. Most people are friendly country folk in the Appalachians. Oh they’ll be very clear about it if you try to gussy up to them that you somehow share the same shoes, but if you’re yourself they’re warm and inviting. This movie is so hilariously biased that to think someone would take it as a geography lesson is pretty amazing. Goebbels did a similar thing.
