Can the crank in a Focus blacktop be used in a silvertop block with a silvertop head?
Silvertops are getting scarce.
I’ve owned a number of contour/mystique/mondeos. Over here they were iron block aluminum head Dohc 16v. Replace the water pump and timing belt on time and they’d run forever
thoughts on the mt75 box vs a type 9? same bolt pattern as the type 9 I think?
If I was looking for a black top in a scrapyard how would I identify if it was a 1.8 or 2.0? What are the differences in that sense? Someway I can identify the I’m buying the engine I want.
On the 1.6 silvertop does the water pump turn the same direction as the crank? Do you do an alternator kit for this, without all the jocky wheels?
Love how you address the duratec named motor is based off the zetec plant that always confused me, and I heard cosworth had a hand in the st170 motor?
Also these plants are immaculate

Interesting stuff! Would it be possible to show a bit on the differences between the engines considering a rear wheel conversion? Think of cost, aftermarket parts availability, durability, power output. You guys must have huge knowledge on this topic:D

Hi,I’m a big fan from Australia.Love the work you do on keeping the old fords on the road! After some advice,would the Aussie XR5 focus 2.5 turbo engine which I believe is still a Duratec be of use to convert to a mk2 escort? Tia.
2.5 is basically a Mazda L-series engine with a Duratec badge slapped on.
Can you guys please give us some info on the internals !!!! Need to know how similar the black top to the st170 or the mk1 focus rs engine😬 Im in a turbo project with my black top 2.0 and im a bit worried won’t be strong enought to keep up with boost . Im planning to run on low boost at about 10psi .

Is the black top only 2.0 or does it also come at 1.8l? If so, how does one identify the difference? Thanks
I've got a black top.2 ltr zetec 16v I've done ur double breather fix .thay came out in 1998 is that right .
Hi and thank you for clearing up a few questions I had between them but also what about the 1.6 zetec motors, as I’m only wanting to swap for reliability and not too power and tge 1.6 zetec seems to have 4 bolt water pump and the inlet and exhaust seem to be opposite sides. What other difference is there and will this stop me from fitting in a red application?will a type 9 gearbox fit straight up to say a 2005 focus 1.6
Hi Nathan, the 1.6 engine you are describing sounds like a Sigma (sometimes badged as "Zetec-SE"). This engine was jointly developed by Ford and Yamaha and is very different to the Zetec-E engines (Black Top, Silver Top & ST170). We don't stock or supply any parts for this engine and none of our Zetec-E parts would be suitable. I am not sure what the bolt pattern is like on the Sigma engine (as we don't do anything for them), but I am pretty sure they do not bolt straight up to a Type 9 gearbox. There are some 1.6 Zetec-E engines but these are very rare and would have been found in a MK2 Mondeo or MK5 / MK6 Escort. 👍
@@Retrofordltd thank you for replying, ok so I should just stay clear of the little 1.6 as a rwd conversion as it’s going to be a minefield for parts and there compatibility?
No problem at all Nathan, yes probably best to go for a 1.8 or 2.0 as the 1.6 Zetec-E engines are really hard to find now 👍
I got a 1.6 Zetec-E silvertop with 2.0 silvertop cams. That change the curve alot. Much (in relation to the standard cams) stronger in higher rpm's :)
Ok what’s the difference between these and the YB cosworth?
Are they similar?
Nothing.
The YB/Pinto is longer.
There’s also the odd ball early black top that has a cam cover that looks like a silver top…. As you the water pump is the giveaway
My engine had run for 369,000 km,, 5 time a week in the limeter, 7k, still runs like a clock
The st170 sure looks a whole lot like the usa focus svt engine.
Yes, as far as I am aware they used the same engine in the ST170 and the SVT 👍
