Bug-A-Salt 2.0 Disassembly and Repair - Trigger Catch

  • Bug-A-Salt wont stay cocked after you've racked the pump action? Salt going flying out the barrel without you pressing the trigger? Probably the trigger catch!
    Easy enough to replace with a thin phillips head screwdriver, the hardest part is dealing with the muzzle piece and keeping the springy bits retained.
    Watch out critters!

      @@corycole3474 couldn't tell you the best method without seeing it, but if the threads are so gone you can't get it out with pressure or one of those extractor bits that grab, you might need to drill the head off the screw so the clamshell can come apart and you can remove the rest with a pliers. If it's real rusty or something I might try penetrating oil like pb blaster after trying something milder like ballistol (mostly mineral oil I believe) to loosen it up.

    mines started shooting salt out without me even finishing the pump, and i just got mines days ago, and uhh also anyway to make the pump a little easier... to pump? almost difficult for a salt gun, it's like its a real shotgun?

    • @meatsmell8639
      @meatsmell8639 3 роки тому

      The only way I could see it firing before finishing the pump, is if you aren't fully engaging with each slide. The strength of the shot in a design like this, is typically directly related to the strength of the spring which is attached to the pump/slide, making it easier to pump would result in a loss of power.

    It really is exactly like a NERF gun, even down to the bright orange plastic parts. The trigger catch is always a weak link, but make sure there is no lubricant on the plunger "hook" or on the catching edge of that square trigger catch. Otherwise this may lead to the gun misfiring before the parts are even worn out.

    • @kailua808
      @kailua808  5 років тому

      No doubt about that, there was a gob of grease where the catch slides up and down, but I imagine getting it on the engagement surface will cause it to slip. Maybe even act as a lapping compound and smooth it out as well. Mine is still holding up after a few hundred rounds with zero malfunctions!

Today a fly woke me up and my weapon wouldn't cock....and salt ran out of the barrel. My gun is very low time so I didn't wear the shear pin out....the pressure on it from leaving it cocked caused the breakage.....tip - always empty your chamber before storage.

    • @kailua808
      @kailua808  5 років тому +1

      I've been on a quest for that myself, but I havent found such a spring yet (admittedly I havent searched much). A nerf upgrade spring or maybe an airsoft part might work, but the spring in there is pretty stout as it is. The problem I see happening and why I didnt pursue that (and went straight to a 22lr pistol loaded with rock salt, see my A-Salt-Glock video) is the trigger catch/plunger engagement wearing out quickly. The pieces are plastic on plastic and any more force on the union is going to kill it faster no doubt. Another consideration would be that it would be harder to rack. I did put several THOUSAND rounds of salt downrange with this gun before mine started to act up though!
      My suggestion for the big guys is coarse kosher salt and not the fine-grained table stuff that ends up just taking the wings off. I've tried rock salt like pink himalayan stuff, but it doesnt feed as well due to the large irregular grains.

    You don't even need the indicator. Remove that part and the spring and you'll be able to cock and fire as fast as you can. I'm on my fourth one, and I think they're the best thing since sliced bread.
    I want to see one with a flashlight and not a laser; flies camp at night and are fun to blow away while they sleep.

      If you don't have a warranty anymore, tear into that gun and try and file the trigger catch to recreate the squared edge. Worst case scenario is you f it up and have to throw it out anyway.

      I hear you, it's all plastic inside really. It seems the ones that die early are kept cocked or short-stroked on racking often rounding off the trigger catch. If the garbage truck hasn't come yet you might have luck with a small file and a Philips screwdriver.

    • @stevenfox2172
      @stevenfox2172 9 місяців тому

      That's not true. What we're dealing with here is that fairly sturdy toy that is delivering one of the more corrosive elements to kill flies. Depending on what kind of salt you use, you might have all kinds of adulterants also floating about inside of your toy. It's the reason why all the screws on the inside are horribly rusted. I recommend using a decent rock salt that doesn't have any secondary ingredients. You have to actually check the ingredients on salt, because even your salt might not just be salt.
      So, it's a toy but I use mine as a tool and it's absolutely indispensable. I think I'll be making my own video here shortly.
