- Yes, another reloading video. My favorite yet. Fast, Clean, Easy and no paper, glue or tape, or cutting. After use, little to no residue. Prep, walk away and come back to ready salt clips. No more worries about wasting CO2 because you don't want to use too many expensive salt cartridges at one time. Load up a pile and get ready for your next bug hunt.

Thanks for this! just tired it out and it works GREAT. So much better than messing with the paper. I found it does work just fine with just setting on some paper towel, no need to plug the back side, which is great because that means you can fill several at a time, just laying them flat on a table. Due to the water surface tension, it seems to pull the salt up from the back so it doesn't bulge at all.
I'm impressed with your research and dedication to this small hobby.

If I wasn't doing this, I am sure I would be puttering around with something else. I actually intended doing videos on stuff I do around the house/yard. This one just happened to take off. 😁

(Read The Tip) Great concept. I was looking at the Shreder but was turned off by having to buy ammo for it. CO2 is bad enough, but at least, you are getting POWER. HOWEVER I have a tip that is going to make your idea MUCH better I hope. Don't use water to draw your salt together in the chamber. Use the highest percent rubbing alcohol you can buy (above 90%). Not only will it work to pull the salt down into shape, but it won't disolve it nearly as much. And it will dry much faster and more completely allowing for much faster turnaround time. Salt is much more attracted to certain kinds of solvents (like water). There are other solvents that it is much less friendly with (Rubbing Alcohol). Ideally the salt will retain its granularity while the alcohol dries. Especially if you put it under a light or out in the sun. When you fire, it should make a nicer spread, even in the gun without the seperator. Chemistry is your friend. Try this and let me know. Still pondering the purchase. Databyter
Just ordered my cartridges. LOADS of great lessons and insights in this video, but as a recovering alcoholic, I finished the video thinking like you: this is awesome, but it would be better with alcohol. (I use humor to accept our truce. I know that it's not true. I'm fine. 😂) I've got 70% and 99% next to my 3D printer. 99% will probably not dissolve enough. I suspect the ideal will be around 91%, which is what normal people can buy at the store.

Alcohol confirmed better IMO. Can't overdo it. Dries fast. Leaves the top nice and white.
Also, popping out the black center and rinsing it is a good idea if you're not rushing. And print the reloading jig on printables.

Great idea! I took out the divider and it made a notable difference.
Used your technique to load for a Vigilante because I wanted more power than my Bug a salt. Wanted even more power and range for yellowjackets. Bought a Crosman 1077 with extra magazines so now I have a rifle salt gun. The only caveat-the 12 shot mags aren’t flush so drilled some holes in plexiglass, lay a paper towel on top, sit the cartridges over the holes so they sit flush. A little more challenging to load but well worth the effort.

Hi Joe this is Joe in AZ, longtime subscriber 1st time responder. 1st enjoy your documentaries! Couple of things that helped me with my reloading after watching your vids. 1st used a gun powder pan for loading the salt, very controlled. Next I found that by ripping out the black indexer from the cartridge I get a much better flush seating of the reload cartridge. Also found using a Dremel wrench screwdriver end is perfect for pushing the pellets up just enough to get a slight protrusion before glueing them in place. Lastly playing with using a single hole punch to place a paper/tissue wad in the chamber before adding the salt to help prevent some of the salt from seeping thru during the drying process. Thanks for all you do!
Wow, thanks for the feedback. You put a lot more thought and effort into this than I have. Sounds like you have it down. I honestly usually just use factory cartridges I started the videos just to see if it could be done, when it first came out. I usually load now just for alternate "garden" no salt loads. Thank you. It is born of necessity. When you put in a fresh CO2 cartridge it becomes a toss up, do you want to waste the money on a partially used CO2 cartridge or do I want to blow several bucks shooting half a dozen salt cartridges. I find this to be an acceptable compromise 😁.
I also haven't posted for a few weeks and wanted to put something up prior to putting up a Salt Swat interview video up. That should be up in a few days 🤞.

Conversely, cut to fit a metal insert (tight fit) and install it into the breech of the Vigilante to see if the result follows the breech split.
I reloaded using the 4:1 ratio. Baking it for 20 minutes at 200°F eliminates the need to let them sit overnight. It worked well for me.
The crosman cartridges index better on the Vigilante.
I have 3 of these wadcutter plugged ones and 3 that I made by pouring silicone into a cartridge propped up on broken toothpicks about 1/2 inch from the bottom of a small souffle cup.

Thank you for you videos on this, I wanted a shredder but they are sold out, so I'm going to get a vigilante to shoot salt, and now I'm going to reload my cartridges so I don't have to spend $12 each time
And I understand that it's all at my own risk, nobody is responsible but me, also I was curious if there has been any long term effects on your vigilante from using factory shreder cartridges
Also which method of reload do you prefer? Your V4 method, or this one with the pellet cartridge and no paper?
Yeah, shipping costs are an issue making the Shred-Er cartridges more expensive, Since I play around with other Bug-A-Salt items, I just tack them on to my purchases to get the free shipping.
If you really wanted the Shred-Er though, I would guess with the fall and cooler weather the shred-er isn't going to be selling out quite as quickly as during peak bug months.

@@oddynuff7063 The only real effect on my vigilante that I have noted isn't even that long term, but I get some rusting in the barrel. So you may want to clean it out after use when getting ready to store.
@@oddynuff7063 For the vigilante I prefer the no paper method, it is just less effort and the vigilante shoots them fine. If I use too much corn starch it can misfire/get stuck in the shred-er because of the plastic barrel divider. I use the v4 method for all of my custom loading, i.e. no salt loads or heavy salt (sea salt). I hope that helps.

the divider was put in there to keep people from shooting projectiles , you can get plastic bb's ,wouldnt it make an awesome air soft pistol also if it shoot 6mm plastic bb's ?

Yea that divider helps. This method makes it like a slug instead of birdshot or spray like a shotgun. Which will drastically lower accuracy
I recommend this method but packing the salt with a t20 bit works perfect then slightly mist it instead of a drop of water. It makes it too hard and the salt doesn't break up when shot out of a vigilante. And in some places humidity will hold it together fine after packing it. But def the pellets glued in an extra cylinder is key!
@@brentstone3104 I'm stealing the T20 idea. Misting instead of dropping is a good idea, but try using isopropyl alcohol instead of water. Much improved. You can drench it in alcohol so the bottom of the round also hardens up at the same time.
(Also, TECHNICALLY a slug is way more accurate than birdshot. 😉)
Are the pellets .177? More specific what are the exact pellets your using because I love this idea. Thank you for experimenting and coming up with this

Generally I eyeball it, but probably about 3 or 4 :1 salt to cornstarch. Too much cornstarch and it really solidifies in the chambers but this ratio seems to work fine.
@@justanotheravgjoe1314 I find it works just fine at 4:1, even 5:1 ratio. it needs juseemst enough to get the salt to stick together, any more and it leaves a bit of powder residue behind...
This is a fantastic method, though. Really saved me time. Now I have a bunch of circles I had already cut out of cigarette paper that I won't need! I had actually decided it might be worth it just to buy new ammo packs given that it was such a pita to refill. I was using watered down elmers school glue and rolling papers, and it was pretty time consuming just to save 12 bucks here and there, but this method is totally a win since its so easy and fast. No scrubbing the cartridges after to clean off the paper remnants either!

How long to you have to dry it?
Save yourself about half and just buy the crossman bb gun cuz it’s exactly the same lol. Everything works to shoot salt as well.
So true, I have shot salt through pretty much all the air guns including that .50 airgun a friend loaned me to try. Only issue is the barrels do rust up quite a bit and fairly quickly.
Curious how long the co2 cart will last in the shredder if you haven't shot it in a while. Will it still shoot after sitting for a week?
apparently it isn't good for the internal seals to leave the co2 cart in at all and I read it is suggested to try and exhaust the cartridge before storing it. It's probably ok for a day or maybe two (which is all I have ever needed to empty the co2 past the point of effectiveness for killing something anyway) but my bf say he has experienced weapons freezing up entirely after storing with a charged co2 cart. It's not that the cart itself loses pressure, but that the seals inside get unhappy during that time and won't unstick when using a new co2 cart either. (Apparently, that's what happens if you don't put some silicone based lube on the valve tip before loading the co2 cart, too, which he also learned the hard way....)
anyone tried to shoot salt down a rifle length barrel? i have a c02 pellet rifle with this same type of
cylinder so i am just curious.
Does the co2 Leak in the gun? I’m not really sure how that works.
It does, slowly, but mine seems to keep the cartridge for awhile I have used after a month and still had power, but that probably takes its toll on the rubber gaskets/seals.
Someone design a 3d mold/plug for the cartridge.

Can you just load salt into the vigilante cartridges? It seems like doing this will get rid of the sync issue.
I did do that at one point, I don't recall if this fixed the issue. I think I just had a load of empty shredder cartridges around and not many vigilante cartridges and was doing a bunch at the same time.

@@justanotheravgjoe1314 I got the vigilante in today and loading the cartridges with it works fine. I did it with the tissue paper like the factory reloads and your 4.0 video and it works great. I will probably 3D model and print something like you did in this video (instead of glueing pellets) and try the salt + water loads. Either way, thanks for all this testing. It is super fun to blast bugs with the vigilante.
When you take that plastic piece out just use a drill bit same size will take it out easy

I prefer the water over the paper cutter. More a time thing. The water you can do all your empties at once and pretty quickly, put them aside and they are all ready to go when you need them. Unless I need some right now, then I'll do the paper, but if I need them right now, I tend to break out the factory loads.
Is it possible to reload with rock salt?
You can, but if you go to large you then lose the beneifit of the spread. I found some coarse kosher was pretty good, larger grains for heavy hit but still able to get a good amount in the chamber for a spread. If using large salt rocks, may need to eliminate the barrel divider as it will get blocked, that happed with the Corn cob media and cat litter with me.

I usually eyeball it but is about 1 part corn starch to 4-5 parts salt. When I use more I will sometimes get solid chunks of cornstarch. I still play around with it, because the cornstarch tend to settle to the bottom of the mix so shake it up before you scoop. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Salt to cornstarch ratio?
I guess I used about 3:1 salt to cornstarch, but I was just eyeballing it. I think I did a video afterwards where I used just salt and added a drop of water. That one worked fine too. Whatever is easy. I usually now just do the Salt and a drop of water. It is pretty fast and Dries pretty quickly.

There is no way you were 18 feet from that fly when you shot it. Did you mean 18 inches?
I believe I meant 18 inches (I don't actually recall), I can't imagine hitting and killing a fly from that far with this or any salt gun. I don't think I can even see a fly at 18 feet.
