- Side by side Comparison of the Shred-Er and Vigilante. Comparing the frames as well as functioning with interchangeable parts.
Test firing salt loaded vigilante cartridges as well as shred-er cartridges through the vigilante.
Finally, test firing pellets loaded in the shred-er cartridge through the vigilante barrel. (Do not attempt to fire pellets through a stock Shred-er barrel/upper as there is a barrel obstruction built in and could result in injury and or damage to the Shred-er upper.)
I hope you enjoy the video.

As an avid fly assassin I can 100% recommend the Bug-a-Salt 3.0 over the Bug-a-Salt 2.0. The lethal range is much better and the safety mechanism is MUCH better. It allows for rapid firing instead of resetting safety on every shot. We have a turkey farm fairly close by and have frequent invasions from aerial terrorists.
Since upgrading to the 3.0, my status has been transformed from average sniper to a true one man assault division capable of genocide. After every fly hunt I feel compelled to pray and ask forgiveness for the incredible loss of life that I and the engineers of the 3.0 are responsible for. The glee I feel watching flies fall to the ground from mid-air flak attack should feel wrong somehow but I only feel giddy.
I sincerely hope my humanity and respect for life isn’t permanently destroyed by warfare with this tough and relentless enemy. I do not feel the negative effects of PTSD, thankfully. I’ll update you if changes to my sanity occurs.
😂
Humanity thanks you for your bravery. Keep going, brother.
I recomend ditching the bug asalt for a beeman p3.. you'll actual get you money's worth.. not just a plastic spring gun like.. AIRSOFT....which you can actual get for half that....
its all plastic... and we know spring guns destroy plastic over time...
Great review. I never expected the two to be interchangeable like that.
Thanks for the timestamps in the description too.
Thanks, when I first got one, I didn't realize it either, it was from viewers/commenters that brought it to my attention.
The time stamps 😬, Yeah I wish I knew about that when when I had posted some of my earlier...excessively detailed videos.
Crosman has a version of the Vigilante that comes with 3 barrels (3", 6", 8") so you could dedicate one barrel for the salt rounds.
Hi Joe, I'm afraid I kinda forgot about this, but it so happens that someone mentioned the shoutout. While the original comment seems to have gone missing, I do remember making this statement at some point. While I'm not really the type to drink coffee, being mentioned by another channel is always an honor, which I am very thankful for. It was very interesting to see the two atually sitting side by side even if I'm two years late to the party.
That was a great video!! Very well done!!
Thanks, much appreciated. I have been thinking about other saltSWAT videos to do. The problem is that it is so convenient, functional, and affordable. No cartridges to reload, or maintain, just CO2 and a hopper, It just works. The Shred-Er, at it's high price point opens it up to all types searching for cost saving work a rounds. Lots of fun and power for a fly gun, but a lot of overhead.
It has really started to heat up around here so maybe a yellow Jacket Shoot or something of the sort when they start showing up. 👍🏽😁
Gettin the long barrel. Excited.
just what I was lookin for
This is epic, i just saw bugasalt and had no idea that there is a crossman you can interchange parts with.
I know you mentioned at one point that some people had problems getting the salt rounds to index.. all i do if that happens to me is push the black center part out of the yellow part just a little and it works fine
Thanks, I hadn't even thought to try that. 👍🏽😁.
I’d get the yellow one. Wouldn’t want a paranoid citizen call the cops on me then I get shot for shooting bugs.
Agreed, whenever I venture forth from the sanctuary of my back yard into the front I always take the bright yellow ones.
I have had one commenter mention how he paints the ends of all of his air guns with fluorescent paints to make them seem more toy like, but yeah the all yellow feels a little safer when stalking around the yard 😁👍🏽
Thanks for watching.
Just don't point it at them and you're good
This is why I paint my guns bright colors. No one ever calls the cops.
Yes you r
just don’t shoot the bugs outside and you should be fine
Any idea how long the salt and water takes to dry before you can remove it from the cartridge with the pellets?
first time I saw the SHRED-ER, I immediately thought about my Vigilante, sure enough upon closer inspection they seem to be the same exact parts, exception of the barrel assembly
I'm wondering about replacing the Crosman barrel with a longer carbon fiber tube. It would have the benefits of extra length and smoothbore to keep the pattern smaller.
Great video!
Thank you, much appreciated. 👍🏽
That’s an interesting gun for sure. My only concern with salt and the steel vigilante barrel is the highly corrosive nature of salt.
That’s exactly why it’s plastic. You’ll ruin your vigilante if you don’t clean and oil after each session.
@@skimshady - replacement Vigilante barrel is $20 from Crosman... p/n V357-001, SKU# 251320
Lol sweet, definitely going to pick up a pack of the salt ammo for my Vigilante. Thanks man!
I also am trying to get an alternate load video out for those that don't want to lay waste to their yards/gardens with ongoing salt shooting. Once you have the cartridges/clips, reloading them is a breeze. ua-cam.com/video/lm3p2AGu0FY/v-deo.html 👍🏽
Was going to try and have it up this weekend but life and family duties call 🤷♂️.
Try masonry sand, or sand blasting media
A little patience, scotch tape and table salt will save you lots of money
Index issue could be either worn mechanical parts on pistol or poor tolerances on the manufacture of the salt magazine
Thanks for the video. I own both a Vigilante and a Bug-a-salt 3.0. I have found that the co2 in the Vigilante leaks over time. I suspect same issue with the Shred-er. So not as practical to keep at ready, or to just use for 1 or 2 shots then let it sit waiting for the next time. Whereas the 3.0 is pump and go, every time.
But if you have a bunch of targets that require the power of the Shred-er, then worth screwing down the co2 cylinder and having some fun! I think I get about 30 full power shots with each co2 cylinder then another 20 of reasonable power before it drops off too much to maintain similar point-of-aim/point-of-impact (depending on range).
There are other issues that affect speed and power of co2 airguns (ambient temperature, rapid succession of shots) but maybe not as big an issue for the Shred-er, especially if shooting at close range.
Supposedly you only want to stick with oem co2cartridges and not use other brands or it ruins the seals .
@@DRJoe100 I have both Crosman and Umared CO2 cartridges since I have both manufacturers' airguns. Haven't found a difference other than the Umarex costs more but got them to maintain warranty. The bigger issue is using the correct type of lubricant and adding a drop with each new cartridge. Pellgun oil is good but oil based. I switched to silicon lubricant because I also have higher pressure airguns that can diesel with the pellgun oil.
Will this work with the Crossman triple threat three barrel gun?
Wow
Thanks, good info
Thank you for watching and commenting. Much appreciated. 👍🏽
Btw many people are gonna say this is just a vigilante and yeah it is, but really it's a Crosman model 357 which was introduced in 1983.
The vigilante just has hogue style grips and modern looking barrel shroud.
Thanks Tyler. I was actually wondering about that myself. I grew up really wanting that Crosman 357. It was just so Starsky 😁 (dating myself a little). When the first comments came out about the vigilante I actually thought it was the same as I had remembered, but as you said they had updated the upper and the grips but the underlying frame seems to be the 357. I appreciate the info 👍🏽.
Yeah, it is just a .357 with a new barrel and grips. I personally like the barrel better, cause rails. But I hate the monsterous grips, so I made my own wood ones and like it much better.
@@MrBilld75
I find the barrel horribly ugly.
If I was gonna get one new I'd get the tripple threat which comes with 3 barrel lengths and the 8" barrel isn't ugly.
My only complaint is the half lug S&W model 19 style barrel on a Colt python style frame.
I like the look of a half lug better but it just doesn't really belong on a python that should have a full lug.
Btw back in the mid - late 80's Crosman offered a sharpshooter set #4357 which was the 357-8 with a #457 pistol scope that clamped onto the barrel shroud.
@@TylerSnyder305 I almost picked up that one with the 3 barrels actually, it's pretty cool. I think the Vigilante barrel is goofy looking, yeah, lol. I only like it for the rails and accessory attachments, other than that, yes it's ugly I agree.
You can get either the Thompson M1A1 or the MP-40 from Umarex and try to salt convert them. They are full or semi auto, and use two of the small co2 carts instead of the big ones. They run BBS though, so how you’d go about making salt ammo eludes me at the moment.
Just go straight to a 20 or 12 gauge shotgun with rock salt and really show em.
Yeah the feeding of some of them is the challenge, I am going to do the Sig just for fun as they have a chain/belt, it will be tedious to load, but primarily the one by one chambers of salt, so kind of like doing the V 3.0 reload video 30 times, may be worth doing once. I may try the salt slurry, but I don't want a bunch of salt floating around the magazine. I'll have to look at the Umarex models, this is all for fun for me and out of my own pocket, so I'll tackle them as I can 👍🏽.
🤣my neighbors as well as my landscaping would love the 12 gauge 🤔🤣
I’m laughing my ass off I’m gonna put some salt down one of my kids daisy Red Ryder BB gun and blow a fly to shreds … And try not to shoot my eye out It is Christmas though
Actually it is based off of the old Crosman 357 magnum hunting revolver frame which I believe has been around a lot longer. Lol. They just reuse the same design. It must have worked well enough for it to still be around.
So this gun is meant to shoot gun? Or you just bought the pellet gun to see if the parts were interchangeable? The vigilante is ment to shoot salt too?
What were you comparing the cartridges prices? Don't u have to use the bug a salt cartridges in the vigilante? So you'd have to buy those anyway right? I'm just not understanding that part.
I would recommend a Schmidt & Bender scope for either one for the best results! Happy Hunting!
4:12 Barrel length probably has less impact on penetration/pattern than the rifling. The spin imparted will cause the load to spread outward more quickly.
Great observation. Didn’t even consider rifling when I did this. Thanks for you comment 👍🏽, and thanks for watching. 🙏🏽
I was thinking the same thing. One of the reasons you don't use buck/bird shot in a rifled shotgun.
Exactly. 👍 This has been demonstrated on many shotgun channels. In fact that's why Henry has a smooth bore "garden gun" designed for .22 shotshells. The smooth barrel gives tighter groups.
Though I suspect the longer barrel contributes to speed and power. I don't know how much the salt rounds weigh but likely a lot less than lead pellets so need a bit more barrel to let the discharged CO2 fully expand before the round leaves the barrel.
7th Infantry Div..!! Hoorah..!!!! Badass shirt brother..!! Light Night fighters..!!
👍🏽. Nice😁, I always wonder if anyone will notice. A 1/9 at Ord 88-90. Just Cause.
Interesting that this is based on the Vigilante, which I knew as the Crosman 357 back in the day. I would not want to shoot salt through my barrels though -- and swapping barrel tubes was very easy -- I put in smoothbore brake/fuel line to shoot .25 cal paintballs, same concept should work on this Vigilante as well. I also wonder if they changed the valving on the Shred-er vs Vigilante? Seems like -- if you'll pardon the expression-- OVERKILL -- to put that much power behind the salt. Can you chronograph the stock Vigilante with pellets, then swap to the Shred-er frame with Vigilante barrel, and chrono that with pellets, see if it's any different? Thanks! Great vids!
😁👍🏽, if you give it a try please make a video I would love to see that.
Thanks for watching.
WRT "overkill" I saw a comment somewhere that the Shredder is able to take down larger insects. I haven't confirmed this so if anybody knows for sure, please let us know.
Edit: just checked the Bug-a-salt website and they claim it can take down roaches, murder hornets and scorpions. I haven't found any info as to what ranges it can do this at, though.
Nice video. Coffee mug please 🙋🏻♀️
LOL, I wish I had the resources. I would make it so. 👍🏽. Thank you for watching.
Where did you get that metal pellet trap? Seems like fun!
I can't really recall, I think it may have just been an amazon order.
where did you get the small target box with the bounce back buffalo?
I bought last summer on Amazon
smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B078352YVX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I went with this mainly for the size.
It works good as a backstop and catching lead so its not all over the yard, but the targets are magnetized and supposed to stay down with the center target acting as the release/reset. After the first few cycles the magnets rarely catch now, so if you don't mind the targets not staying down it works great.
I hope that helps.
Thanks for watching 👍🏽.
Why did you change out chambers?
Have you found a good way to clean the barrel after shooting all that salt? Don’t want it to rust up
I found some .177 felt plugs that you can either shoot through the barrel or rod through. I put oil on one and run it through then run a couple through dry. Yes, the barrel rusts easily with the salt. Probably the biggest argument in favor of buying a shredder.
So I just got the vigilante and the shred cartridges. Mine are not cycling. Any idea what the differences could be?
Here is a video I did to help out with that issue.
Syncing shred-er cartridges with vigilante:
ua-cam.com/video/etl5EOyZetA/v-deo.html
On the Shred-er there is an arrow that lines up the cartridges with the pistol upper. The vigilante doesn't have this, but by lining the arrow up with a point on the vigilante seems to fix the sync issue. Hard to describe but I have photos and video in the above video that should take care of that. Let me know if that fixes the issue.
Thanks for watching, I hope that helps.
👍🏽
Thanks for the video and the help
Actual range of them?I have carpenter bees hovering at 8' to 12' and these things look dangerous for 4'.
Lol that sig looks super real!
Actually made by sig to size specs of their AR I guess for training and practice purposes. With the 2020 ammo shortage, my kids and I were using it to practice with. Is actually a really fun air gun, but those large CO2 cartridges can get pricey fast.
Sig's airguns are very accurate to the real thing, even weight wise.
How are you loading the stock vigilante cartridges with salt?

I'll be darned! So the Shred-R is just a rebranded and colored Crosman! And I thought B-A-S had come up with a unique kick ass design on its own.

Maybe some type of homemade Sabot cartridge for the Umerex HDR 50
Yeah, That may be the way to go, 🤔. Thanks. That is most of the fun with these videos, the brainstorming.👍🏽
The Umarex HDR.50 is a fun gun. I've made my own hot glue slugs with ball bearings in the middle. They hit with quite a thud. Can't get the ready made ball bearing slugs here in Canada, as they are not legal, but hot glue ones are easy and cheap to make and tear things up nicely. Just make a silicone mold the size of the holes in the magazine, let it dry (leaving a hole in the top to pump in the glue) and voila. Once hardened, they can be popped out of the mold and put in the gun.
There's a guy here on UA-cam who shows how he does it, by the name of Rune Rebel. Nice old guy who does a lot with airguns and loves the HDR-50 and Umarex's other guns.
Off topic but what make and model is your dive watch?

My same thoughts, the all black gun looked to real. I would hate having fun shooting fly's turning into something worse.
Yeper, as much as I like the look, I could easily see that being mistaken for a real gun resulting in a bad outcome! For safety sake, better to have one that's toy-like in appearance.
What would you recommend buying? The original Bug a Salt or the Crossman Vigilante using the salt cartridges? I need it for flies, spiders and cockroaches. I believe the Shredder is not worth the money. Thanks!
I have both, and enjoy using both. The Shredder is a pretty good package in that it comes with everything you need and is in a form factor that is not going to confuse neighbors as it is clearly not a real firearm. The Vigilante is nice because you have a functioning bb, pellet and salt gun. Cost wise the vigilante is about half the cost of the shredder. Reloading the cartridges is the other issue, keeping in mind the cost of getting additional clips (shipping as well). So taking all of that into consideration if I was going to have only one, I would go with the vigilante. (maybe paint the end of the barrel fluorescent). I hope that helps.
Thanks for watching. 👍🏽
Patients, scotch tape and table salt work well in the vigilante
man! I thougt that the bug a salt looked familiar now I know.
I was wondering because I recently received my piece maker
With revolver, it's not "synchronizing". The proper term is "timing".
Seems like the salt would screw up the rifling on the vigilante
It does. I cleaned and oiled the bore after doing the video and I still have rust forming in the bore.
That is awsome. But leaving a gun charged, waiting for a fly seems wrong. I never leave a CO2 gun charged. And dont want to waste an entire CO2 caartridge on one or two flies. BTW. what do you you call a fly after you tear his wings off?
......... A Walk.
😂. Yes that is the shortcoming with these CO2 fly guns. You pretty much have to plan your bug shoots. I generally still use the Bug-A-Salt pumps for day to day use with one or two flies. The Shred-Er or saltSWAT are for those days when the yard needs to be cleared 😁
@@justanotheravgjoe1314 Lol I buy the big boxes of CO2. But would still rather not use them. BUT If its one of those flies every where days! Then
put in a cartridge and go Wild Bill on them! Sounds like great fun!
@@justanotheravgjoe1314 While true, that you should not leave CO2 in a gun for a long time, cause it's carbonic acid and will eventually rot things, I've left my carts. in my Vigilante for a month without issue and didn't leak a whole lot/lose CO2 over time. I was still getting solid shots a month later, so you can go at least that long.
@@MrBilld75 Thanks, I have been very curious about this issue. I have had them in for a week and still seemed to have plenty of power. A month though that is good news.
@@justanotheravgjoe1314 Yeah, I was curious too when I got mine, cause I'd heard many things. So I experimented. Left my cart in for 20 days or so and no issues, so I went 30. And none of the airgun experts see anything wrong with a month or so.
I'm on GTA (Gateway to Airguns) forum/website and there's lots of folks who have talked about it and most think a few weeks to a month or a bit more is fine. Nobody has said anything about longer, although some have, but I tend to go with the sciency types who talked about CO2 being acidic and not to leave it in there for a really long time.
But my Vigilante held CO2 for a month no problem. There's videos on the subject of leaving CO2 in them too. Opinions vary, but everyone seems to agree that a month is certainly safe.
Can we get a holster for this thing
I know that one of the vigilante sets you can buy from Crosman comes with a holster, but I would bet that most of your medium frame revolver holsters would probably work on the vigilante, I'm not sure on the Shred-er with shape of the upper attachment, but I believe it should. I only have 1911 holsters and I don't really want to buy one for the salt guns. 🤷♂️.
Anyone else have any holster input?
Practical or not, it’s genius! Please try to load both of those. We got murder hornets here in Washington. Who knows, the information you put forth, just might save someone’s life!
Wow, I just read that they were found again. I hadn't even thought of that, I am going to try and have the trial done this weekend next at latest. Thanks, for mentioning, I hadn't even thought of those monsters. 👍🏽
I'm sorry to say this, but bug a salts are not effective against hornets. In my experience it doesn't kill them but it really makes them mad
@@MrSchmallz I completely agree, the bug assaults for me would occasionally knock one down with a direct hit, but at best do some wing damage, at worst really make them angry. The Shred-ers hits really hard and will kill a Roach (personally) and scorpions ua-cam.com/video/yallvVPeNpA/v-deo.html .
I haven't had my usual summer Yellow Jackets so I haven't seen actual damage from the CO2 powered guns but know that I use the bug assault to shoot mosquito's off of my legs in summer, tried it with a 2+ week old CO2 cartridge and a salt load in the shred-er an broke skin on my ankle (quite and impressive pattern).
I believe if the CO2 salt guns don't kill them they would at the least tear up the wings pretty good.
