I am a auto sports photographer. 2 things I would suggest that you didn't talk about. I suggest switching to back button focus, and continous shooting. I shoots with a T7 and a 90d. I find that my best photos usually are captured about the 3rd and 4th photos of a burst.
I have my Canon 80D set up to do back button focus. Should I hold that button down and then keep my finger on the shutter button too, ready to take the shots. Or does the focus automatically only work on the shutter button in AI Servo.
If using a Canon kit lens (18-55mm) are you keeping the lens in manual mode but with the stabilization on? Also, when shooting a group like the cyclists, any tips for quickly using the focus ring to get your subject sharp?
Nice video! What I love about the panning shot is you don't need a low aperture i.e expensive lens to do it. It's all about the timing of the shot. Dialing in that shutter speed to suit. After 100's of shot's your doing well to get a handful of great shots!
Hello Paul, I will be attending a soap box derby race . What would be a good starting shutter speed ? Also, is there a certain size lens that works best ?
Great video as always Paul. I have an issue with my Canon m50 and is when I try to select the middle focus point, I press the icon you did but my camera focus on the screen is a square not and triangle like yours with different dots where i get to choose the middle point. Please advice
Hi Rene, The M50 is a very different camera - the square is the where the camera will focus, and you should be able to move this around using the round 'selector / joystick' button on the back of the camera.
Trouble shooting question: I used the setting recommended in this video. When I play back a video with a pan on my computer the image quality is very low. ( stuttering or a double image appearance ) But playing back on a TV it looks fine. 4K video shot on a Sony a7iii. ANy ideas why?
Hej! Thank you for bringing up this topic. It is intersting and creates a great action shot. I have one question though. I have seen other youtubers that also add in the shutter speed VS focal length discussion. Something that you have an opinion on?
Hi Paul I am shooting with a Olympus EM10-2 I quite often get Air Force jets flying past I have set the camera up but not sure what shutter speed I should use I have set up for a 1/2000 do I need to go faster if so what do you recommend. I enjoy your videos.
Best video on panning,it actually showed what focus method to use,AI Servo,a lot of tutorial videos skips that. Cant wait to sit outside and watch traffic go by or in Central Park and watch cyclist go by
Thanks for the interesting tutorial. I am a (freetime) sportsphotographer and I use to take my "panning" photos on camera setting "M" (manual) and determin myself the aperture and shutter speed needed, while putting the ISO on Auto(matic), also using "back button focus". This works for me the best. Very important : practise, practise, practise ... !
If you are looking to use the panning technique at an indoor track, then keep the shutter speed same, but set your lens to the widest aperture and increase the ISO. Unfortunately most indoor sports venues are not well lit, so the ISO may well have to be set much higher than you would normally use, whilst this may mean some digital noise, it's better to get the shot than miss the shot.
Hello how are you? Congratulations on the video, I just found it in a UA-cam search. Can you help me understand something? How can I, a Brazilian photographer, work as a freelancer in sporting events such as races, obstacle races, trail races, etc.? Is there any company that hires foreigners to work as freelancers? If yes, what do you need? My intention is to start at the beginning of 2024 at sporting events around the world. My dream is to be a sports photographer around the world covering this together with a team. It's a shame that here in Brazil we don't have much information about access in America and Europe. I thank you for your attention.

i hv question...how long we need to press shutter button because it really confusing

This is just the best channel for photography. Well done
Great to watch this. I am just about to go out and try panning.
I anticipate around 500 shots to get what I want !

Paul is the greatest, thank you for the lessons.

Thankyou for the best tips. Love watching your videos. From Papua New Guinea
Enjoyed watching, I've had good results doing this but my camera has been put away for years so needed to watch this. Many thanks
Great to hear! Thank you.
excellent tutorial!
The right shutter speed depends on the SPEED, but also on the FOCAL LENGTH and DISTANCE from the object.

Always a nice and helpful teachings to improve our photography skills, can we except something on camera bust mode ?
I just started watching your videos and everything suddenly makes so much more sense.
Thank you.
Super advice. Thanks very much. Makes me want to grab my camera. What greater compliment!

Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this. Question - do you find you need a filter on a sunny day?
Thank you sir for your tutorials.., starting today I always wait for your new upload :-)
Hello Paul, awesome video. Do I use the same settings if I am doing night panning

Agree, you can take great panning photos with entry level gear and no fancy lens required as it's largely technique. Thanks for the feedback.
Paul you are superb
What shutter speed do you recommend for situations where there’s a lot of light?
Hello Paul, I will be attending a soap box derby race . What would be a good starting shutter speed ? Also, is there a certain size lens that works best ?
Awesome thanks!
You are great sir, thank you for your lesson 🙏
Another fantastic video. Thanks mate
Do I full press or half press while panning?

AF-C goes well with BBF instead of the shutter button....
Thanks great video, easy to follow. I now feel confident I can go out and try some shots!
Thanks. Mónica

@@photogenius thanks a lot Paul. When you say the m50 is a very different camera is that a good or bad thing. Thanks

Hi Paul. Do you use Single shot or Continuous mode when panning?
Hi Paul! Great video! I just have one question: Do you use the burst shoot mode while panning?
Yes
Great tips !! The new challenge??? We are waiting !! Hello from Mexico !!
Right to the point, thanks for sharing!
I like how you teach

These are great videos! Can’t wait to try this one out!
I found a mono pole helps me a bit
Could you tell me the speed used ? Merci

1/2000 is already enough

I couldn't figure out how 1/50th wasn't working, shooting a motorcycle but now I understand speed makes a big difference
Absolutely - shutter speed and moving subjects go hand-in-hand.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the interesting tutorial.

Going to my (only) local track this weekend, I’m pretty excited to get some cool pics of the awesome cars!
How do you do this for indoors. Outdoors you have the help of sunlight for this stuff.
@@photogenius thanks, I have tried this on occasion with speed skaters but haven't been happy with the results.
ISO goes automatic?

Paul that was very helpful, thanks. I seem to be attracted toward motorsports photography so I'm practicing and learning.
How much thoose cameras
The ones he was showing (I think NIkon 3300) is under $500.
😍😍😍
First
ISO (signal amplification /gain) has nothing to do with the amount of light that camera captures (that is, it's not a part of exposure), genius.
