      I first managed to get the exposure right on an entirely manual, inexpensive 35mm camera with no autofocus, no rangefinder and no exposure meter when I was about 15. I stared at that print for ages through a magnifying glass and was amazed. There was detail. Blurred but not a white blob and I could make out the seas. Magic!

    • @scottyplug
      @scottyplug 6 місяців тому

      I would do L JPEG and RAW, that way you can have the best of both worlds. A JPEG, ready to download and share, and the RAW footage to edit in Lightroom or some other program. It takes up more room, but memory is pretty cheap these days. @@ramelfrost134

    Other tips: Use a polarizing or moon filter to cut glare. If your camera has a mirror, lock the mirror up to minimize camera shake. Quarter moon or crescent moon pictures can be better than full moon pictures since the sun is shining at it from the side causing shadows from the crater ridges giving more detail to your photos.

    Hi Paul, just wanted to say a huge thank you. Some time ago I started watching your videos, I was in auto mode with the entry level D5600. After watching your tutorials (which perfectly explain how to move to manual mode) I moved to full manual and have never gone back to auto. I've even upgraded to the D500 and have achieved many stunning pictures. I don't think I would have been brave enough to move over without your beautifully and clearly explained videos. You have covered the topic very well. One note I would add is, observe the moon through the camera and lens for a short while - minutes - and you will notice a shimmer over the surface of the moon from time to time. It is actually our atmosphere which becomes unstable for a short time. After a while, you can pick the quiet times (no shimmer), so target the photo in that time. This will give the shooter the best results, especially at higher magnifications. Another aside, shoot the moon higher in the sky - less atmosphere to shoot through. Clear skies.

    Well I must say it’s great to listen to an English voice explaining in detail. No offence but overseas accents can leave you straining to understand or bore the life out of me. This was clear and precise. I have just purchased a bundle of gear second hand ,still a lot of money with zero photography knowledge so I’m going to need all the help I can get as I’m off for a lap of oz this year and would hope to come home with some amazing picture memories. I shall check out your other videos to see what else you can help me with. Tonight was the moon on a Nikon d5300 with a 200-500mm lens and I made a complete hash of it so hopefully tomorrow with full moon will be perfect with your tutorial. Thankyou so much 🙏🏻

    Hey Paul! I'm glad I found your videos. I actually bought my very first DSLR camera, which is a Canon T7/1500D starter bundle kit. It came with 18mm-55mm lens and 75-300mm lens. A few weeks after I purchased the camera bundle, I purchased my very first prime lens(Canon 50mm STM lens). Through watching various of your videos(especially the ones that features the Canon T7), I've learned a lot. I'm dying to take a moon photo after watching this video, because I actually have the camera and lens you used to take your moon photo. Your photo came out so crisp and clean. I would greatly appreciate it if you could continue to do more videos on tips, tricks, photography, lenses, etc on the Canon T7/1500D🙏💯
    I would love to grow my photography skills with the Canon T7 and the 3 lens i have right now.

    My first camera was a Minolta Hi-Matic semi automatic SLR camera, which I bought in Hong Kong in 1970. I had so much fun with it starting onAutomatic setting , then graduating to taking manual photos and slides. I still have it but don’t even know if I can get film for it now. I have a couple of compact cameras and a Fugi Finepix bridge camera. Your explanations brought so many memories back. My best ever photo was of the Houses of Parliament at night, I didn’t have a tripod, I just rested it on the embankment wall and held my breath while counting to ten holding down the shutter. It was a lucky shot!

    What i really like on your videos is the way how you explain and show it on Canon and Nikon cameras without making a difference between those two brands.I saw this on many of your videos.

    Perfectly timed for the super moon but, here in my part of the UK it is too cloudy at 9pm. I've checked the weather forecast and set the alarm for 3am. Hopefully I can be out in the garden before my wife realises exactly what time she has been woken up at.

    Excellent video! I bought a Canon T7 last fall (Spring to you! ) and fairly recently bought the 75 to 300 mm Zoom. I was encouraged to see that you are using the same lens to photograph the Moon. The weather should be good tonight; as long as the Moon is clear of the trees, I should be able to get a good picture. I also have a 1,000 mm telescope which I'm going to use it sometime in the future. I have used that already with my old Fujifilm camera.

    Thanks Paul,
    Wish I had seen this two years ago. Lol.
    Really nice to see and hear someone saying "ISO KEEP IT LOW" I was bought up on that mantra in the '70s with film.
    On my now dead bridge ( Sony DSC H400.) my go to start position was 1/250s f8 @ 100 ISO.
    For a full moon. That camera would drop to 80 ISO
    Someone told me that was a good starting point for the moon.
    Great Content again. !
