@@slbleadworks You're welcome bud, and I know how much time and effort it takes to grow a UA-cam channel😬I do lots of roofs, and I absolutely love leadwork on them🤩Good luck with the channel👍Cheers Del
@@slbleadworks no problem Stuart. You have taught me alot about a subject and trade i have always admired and i have loved it. I used some scrap lead i had to cap some gate posts today. Thankyou 👍
Your videos are incredibly useful to me - I have a large old house in the Highlands, covered in lead hips, lead flat roof sections etc. I love doing stuff myself (decent tradesmen are hard to find and sometimes very expensive up here or unable to pin down). This will enable me to tackle some jobs - although I won't be as quick as you, I'm more confident now I'll be able to achieve a great finish, and better than some previous roofers who didn't bother to cut and weld the end of the hips!
Evening Stuart…. Hope yr week has gone well in this heat… Excellent work as always… Have a great weekend my friend… Question… Is that one house….? Much love Chris…👍
Hi Chris yes the heat has definitely made working more challenging. However better than rain I suppose. Yes this is just one house. The client is having this built for his parents.
You can not beat slate it looks so tidy when done right. I like the lead hips and ridge. Is the price comparable to a dry ridge system? I have had so many so-called roofers repairing my ridge tiles over the years. I could have had a new roof fitted for the cost I have paid to would-be roofers. I decided to have a dry ridge installed but I don't think they did a very good job. Is the lead hips and ridge more expensive than a dry ridge system? It certainly looks nicer and you have done a fantastic job of that roof.
I love the look of a slate roof. And lead hips and ridge compliment the slate very nicely. I’m not sure about the costing to be honest. As I don’t do any tiling/slating. I would guess lead to be more expensive. But In the long term it would work out more cost effective as you’ll never have to do it again in over 100 years.
Thank you. To be honest I don’t have much experience of working on churches. But I have had to carry lead up lots of flights of stairs before . However with churches the lead is usually of a higher code and therefor much heavier. I’d feel very sorry for anyone that had to do that. If a crane is too expensive. Maybe a hoist on the scaffold might be suitable.
Thank you. The traditional way would be to boss the roll ends. And in my opinion this also looks so much better. But also there is nothing wrong with welding a roll end and I’ve come across a lot of modern lead workers that never boss roll ends at all. This job has been started by someone else who has welded the roll ends. So now to keep things uniform it’s what I had to do too.
Fucking lovely job man appreciate the content love how you walk thorough the whole job. Any recommendations how to get into lead welding not really common here in Ireland thanks man
Thank you I’m glad you liked the vid and thanks for commenting. Here there are courses you can go on. But failing that you can always just get yourself a little setup and practice at home.
Been noticing that some people are moving away from standard lead to cover timber rolls on bay roofs and are using what looks like a type of flexible lead. Do you know what that's called?
@@thetallcarpenter beautiful work and never over dresses the lead. Makes every tap count. Loved doing lead work as a much younger man so hold folks that can do it this well in very high regard. 🤘😎🤘

Slate doubles on hips somebody is splashing the cash 💸 💰
This is a 10 million pound house I think it’s been like this the whole way through the build.
@@slbleadworks ain't surprising if there's doubles on every hip then haha 😆 🤣

Class job I hope I can get my lead welding as neat as yours

lovely job mate is it best to use copper clips or are lead ones as good
Thank you.
The majority of the time I just use lead ones unless copper has been specified too.
Any areas of high exposure copper is needed

Yes it is. Thanks for watching.
Can you do a video on how you boss the mitre on your hip joint
I’ll see what I can do thanks for the idea.
Great job!!
Can I ask, is it 'normal' to carry lead up onto a high roof, like a church, up the stairs if a crane was too dear?
Thank you.

Tasty work pal but I wish you would have showed the process of how you did it
Thank you. I do try and show the process now more in my vids but unfortunately I didn’t have my tripod with me on this one.
Excellent workmanship a credit to you . One question is that the normal method of welding a roll end. All the best

Been noticing that some people are moving away from standard lead to cover timber rolls on bay roofs and are using what looks like a type of flexible lead. Do you know what that's called?
There’s a product called wakaflex. Or you might be referring to single ply membrane.
Which code lead was used on this one? And why no copper or stainless steel with the clips as I've seen on some of your other jobs?
It was code 4. And yes no copper or stainless steel clips in the spec. This one was so low it’s not needed.
Thats sweet, have you looked into getting Scaffmate to make your life a lot easier? Shame the scaffolding is the wrong hight for you.
No not yet but I would imagine it would definitely make my life a lot easier.
Do you get whisked off to a special wizard school at a young age to learn this type of skill?
It looks amazing
Lol thank you. I think I was just lucky to be working along side some good lead workers in my apprenticeship days.
