This isn't a criticism, I've seen you do lots of top notch work as I'm sure you are/have done with your roof. We have done hundreds of re-roofs and couldn't ever leave one open to the elements overnight granted ours were done for clients so there is a distinct difference regarding liability. I know that it was a freaky mini heatwave but worth bearing in mind that a hot day here in the uk is quite often followed by rain through the night. I don't know if you have mentioned as I haven't been on UA-cam for a little while but I hope your selling the decent ones to a slate yard,I think that I remember you saying that you were fitting new slates.

Hi Tim, I'm not normally a youtube commenter, but thought I could help here. That sag on your roof rafters by the bay is most likely due to the additional load imposed on it from the bay. If you add some bracing round that section, that will help spread the load to the adjoining rafters (and you could do this when the scaffolding isn't about as you can access via the house - depending on when this video was recorded!). My day job is a Civil Engineer if that helps you trust my comment a bit more!

Funny you say that as I cut that bit out of the video. I used a timber to try and jack it up and brace down to the floor joists and wall plate, it didn’t budge much and was pretty set in place hence why i reverted to sistering with another timber. Definitely a couple of spots around the roof where additional bracing from the inside would cure it though. 👍

Im replacing a roof in central Portugal and today was crazy hot..got till 13:30 and had enough..my head was fried.. spend the afternoon shopping for materials then a bit of rebar work in the shade till sun set 👍 roofing is tough

It's a fairly straight forward roof and is probably the best you could ask for if you're doing it for the first time. I would be interested in the cost breakdown for DIY vs getting the roofers in.

Having had part of our roof off to make a connection with the new extension roof and then had the tarpaulin dislodged in wind driven rain causing costly damage I now ensure that contractors have a scaffold roof over the works that are vulnerable. The cost of the scaffold roof diminishes into insignificance compared with the potential damage that can ensue, the risk is not worth it. Maybe contractors would not risk so much if clients actually claimed on contractors All Risks Policies. They would think twice about the loss of their excess and the increased premiums. Besides, having a scaffold roof over means that rain days do not affect progress (delays caused by inclement weather is not a cause for a claim for increased costs) so that it benefits the contractor to be able to take the weather out of the cost/quotation equation.
For an extra £8k in our case, I’m happy to just be a fair weather roofer! 😂 well worth it for more major work, especially if converting the loft at the same time or adding dormers.
@@TheRestorationCouple I can understand your reticence particularly if its the only job that requires scaffold. My judgement is coloured by the ensuing damage caused by a dislodged tarpaulin in an Autumn storm that the contractor assured me was more than adequate when stripping part of a large roof to make a connection with the new one! The ensuing arguments over liability were best avoided, given nthose circumstances £8k would have been money well spent.
Back in the day (Early 70's) we had what were called 'Barrow-Lifts' just like yours there but they were Diesel ...... Had to use one doing a Roof-Screed on a School near Aldershot - Humping barrowloads of Sand & Cement Screed up to the roof .... FINE when it worked, or even when the BRAKE worked - AARRGGHH!!!!! ........ Many a time the barrow went crashing to the ground because the barrow had been slightly over-filled ........ happy Days EH?? .....

Is it true if you leave the membrane uncovered not tiled/slated the sun rays will deteriorate it? and if so how long can you leave ii uncovered?
Different brands have different limits to, think I picked up somewhere thst tyvek is something like 4 months
Yes, a case of several months but hopefully it won’t come to that!

just my 2 cents, but if its just aesthetics on that bay timber, you could have just packed the batten ?
I guess the plus side of sistering another on is that it may help strengthen a little to stop future sag. So maybe a little more than just aesthetics.

Why are you sending all the slates down?
Your rafters are really have little depth. They are dimensioned as you would expect a prefabricated roof truss to be made where they rely on the triangular structure for strength integrity. They should have had a minimum of 145mm for that span. I would advise you sheet the rafters with18mm structural ply or at least sterling board then your tyvek sheet and start with vertical batons followed by horizontal tile/slate Batons.
Dogs Bollocks the reason I offered advise is the type of slate originally used is light weight, but he talked about tiling the roof which would increase the load exponentially, especially if he used concrete tiles. My advise is based on established construction values. I’m not sure where your advise originates

I'm sure you know but you need building regs if you replace more than 50% of a thermal element i.e. roof under part L.
Yeah, I am sure he will rush out and let them know! Building Control are another useless workshy department of the local authority who should be treated with complete contempt.
Yes, although we have already done the thermal part of the roof, they are out to check the work as I go.

When your finished with the screwfix tool return after used and say it was broken and you will get a refund!
